I think the big issue is the way of delivery. 3/4 lines at a time is too little in screen. I love reading AK lore and story in the wiki because it shows all the text at once.

In Arknights, reading these two lines would take 30 seconds because of the slow scene transitions, slow image transitions, forced sound effects, and slow text rendering.
Well no, that's not true. Arknights would also somehow find a way to turn these two lines into ten.

There is this weird catch-22 between event stories and Main Theme that reinforces the status quo as you said. Events build off of the Main Theme because they expect you to be caught up. But the Main Theme never builds off of events because they're optional and missable for a year.
So you get this dichotomy where so much happens inside of events, but none of it matters because it won't affect the Main Theme. We get more actual resolution and plot development in alternate timelines like IS3 than in the Main Theme.

Not trying to justify arknight's shitty writing but, "there is so many words but nothing happens anyways" is a general problem (for me personally) in all gacha games. They purposely drag the main story as long as possible to strech out a drip-feeding dopamine schedule for player rentention, and filling in the space with more side stories that is also forcefully stretched to ahere to the player retention formula, which really muddies the overarching pace of a narrative that make the overall read a less enjoyable experience.

  • @iberis361
    @iberis361 9 месяцев назад +46

You know sometimes I think that the unnecessarily long texts to describe pain, infected, oripathy, suffering, Kal'tsit's morning breakfast in Arknights are used instead to describe the actions that is happening in the story. Like for example how Stainless outsmarted one of the strong sarkaz mercenary ever that is Hoederer. It basically went: "Oh you did that? That's futile!" - "Oh no no but I will DO THIS!" - "Oh nooo he did that, I didn't see that coming!"
Like COME ON! If they want to write wall of descriptive texts, channel it in the action scenes of the story! It'd be more enjoyable to slog through texts by a thousand percent!

  • @spiderdude2099
    @spiderdude2099 8 месяцев назад +5

The absolute WORST way they sometimes do this in events is by doing a flash-forward showing the status quo being changed, but like…that was just a glimpse into the future, I guess we now have this tantalizing prophesy that at some point the canon story MIGHT someday catch up to the events we saw, but until then, lol, FUCK IT, we’re back to your regularly scheduled speech and debate club simulator that occasionally breaks out into a game.

This reminds me that one of my favourite NPC is Cannot, because he is antithesis of every flaw you mentioned. He doesnt overstay his welcome, he doesnt take itself seriously (even when he clearly knows that entire sewer system hits the fan soon) and is just a funny, memorable guy.
In fact in IS 3 if you annoy him too much, he doesnt resort to diplomacy but to kicking your ass and then leaves angry when he fails instead of reasoning.
Also the problem with "status quo is king" is a plague of vast majority of gacha games. Most however have an ecuse since its hard to move plot forward if your story about demons involve Sonic for example. Arknights has no excuses and ironically one of the two collab moved the status quo on meta level since we still see enemies introduced in the collab maps!

Compared to some parts of the previous chapters like some of the flashback scenes in chapter 8, where i literally stopped playing the main story for months because i found it so boring, i really felt an improvement. Chapter 9 ending spoilers
WHY DID THE LAST SCENE OF NEW REUNION KIDNAPPING TALULAH TAKE SO LONG 💀
When I read it I actually hated the writing so so much bruh. First, there was a cutscene with Kalt’sit doing a surgery that was irrelevant to the story. After that the reunion guys will not stop talking but all the really said is that they plan to use violent means to liberate the infected. That’s it, everything else they say is filler to further prove their point. THEY REPEATED THAT SHIT AT LEAST TEN TIMES BUT WORDED DIFFERENTLY AND I WANTED TO DIE SO BAD BRUUUUHHHH! Also, Nine kept insisting that they had to get out soon AND THEN PROCEEDS TO DELAY ESCAPING! WTF? They delayed it so many times before actually leaving. There’s a serious issue with the pacing in the story, and the way information is conveyed makes it confusing sometimes. The lore is so good but who tf is cooking? It’s like having the highest quality ingredients and proceeding to completely fuck it up.
Oh yeah, there was also a random hacker friend who Closure knew and trusted a lot, but I have never heard of him before and he just seemed like he came out of nowhere? He conveniently knew how to hack RI’s system because Closure revealed it to him? After this, we didn’t even get much exploration on how Closure feels about this betrayal that surely should have had a massive impact on her! New Reunion doesn’t even seem that strong and most of their accomplishments look more like the result of insane plot armor. This whole operation wouldn’t be possible if the hacker friend didn’t get convinced by their ideals enough to betray his closest friend, which New Reunion probably didn’t do intentionally. They deadass just got lucky and convinced the only person in Terra who is capable of hacking the land ship to join them. HOW? RI HELPS INFECTED WAY BETTER THAN REUNION IM SO DEAD BRUHHH 💀💀💀

Hello I've quick-read your comments and i hope i can explain something that you wondered on your comments above.( I may miss some of your comments though. I hope i didn't )
      - "kal doing surgery"
RI landship not just act as pharmaceutical company but also can act as an hospital and training place for medics trainee. Kal'tsit sometimes even do a learning course for the medic that are inexperienced with surgery but R.I put more focus on making the cure for oripathy.
      - " the neo-reunions & nine delay their escape ".
most of neo-reunion does still aggressive but not as before after talulah betraying the reunion and using their rage for kaschey scheme most of them just want to execute talulah. And for nine delaying her escapee, my memory is a bit hazy on this but I'm pretty sure it's because she's waiting for the low-altitude aircraft to come and get them. They bought it from Mr.Cannot goodenough( the shop guy from IS ) at a bargain price that obviously bring no profit to cannot but he insisted sold it as form of 'investment'.
      - " closure old friend hacked R.I terminals system "
the reason why this person manage to hack it was because closure and this 'hacker' worked together formulating this programs, not entirely but just tid bits of it and this 'hacker' also knew closure personality. The reason why this 'hacker' prefer helping the neo-reunion is not because he did it for the organization but a 'specific' infected that belongs to reunion and they have some talk to each other, IIRC the 'hacker' empathized with this infectied and then they got somewhat became close friends. And this 'hacker' were also used to be closure partner-in-crime, the duo were a prodigy terminals programmer and they were a menace and quite famous on hacking. Closure herself also quite famous before joining babel and R.I even Theresa herself comes knocking to closure door to convince closure to join her.
I typed quite a lot and there maybe some errors on it so please do CMIIW.

Thanks for typing all that, I learned some new things like how Neo Reunion bought their airship from Cannot and more details about the hacker friend. Always cool to see someone else who also reads the story LMAO
For Kalt’sit’s surgery and the Neo Reunion’s delayed escape plan, I understood what was happening, but I just hate how much time was spent on those parts instead of just making it go by faster. It feels like Nine has repeated neo reunion’s ideals for hours and lady does not EVER stop rambling bruh. At some point I was just hoping she’d pack up and leave because it was kinda obvious that her plan will succeed. I don’t like how long it was dragged out.
Also I lost even more respect for Closure’s hacker friend now that you’re telling me he was also a simp 💀

Arknights' story is like novel, there are nuance within the words. The long way to describe something give a flavor to the whole narrative. Also in term of why everything doesn't change in the end of story, I think it because of realism. You cannot easily solved huge problem in short amount of time. There is a change, mostly change in term of character perception or growth rather than geopolitical sense. Yes, of course there is event that serve as intermediate before the real big event. Also most event serve as a world building rather than typical western fiction (problem -> action -> solution).
Why the mood in arknights seems changing within every event both in game or out game, it is because every event is only a minuscule level of conflict/area. Just like a slice of life, we zoom in to see small movement within specific era and place. Arknights' world is not just a post-apocalyptic depressed world. There are major city which seems like nothing bad happened there, just like our world right now. We see for example america or any country in europe, asia, etc, in a macro scale their city is massive so much skyscraper and technology advancement everywhere. But, if we see on micro scale there is conflict between people, government, politic, poverty, etc. That's why I think arknights doing a great job make a realistic world building (of course with sprinkle of fantasy to spice things up).
In the end, it is our own choice whether we read the story or not. Also it is true there are some story in the event that feels bad writing/setup/translation/etc. It is not a perfect game, but it is doing a great job.
If you want to see some best story in gacha, I think lostbelt 6 in FGO and volume F (well you need to read previous volume to understand better) in blue archive are my most favourite story.

The fact that most people didn't actually directly read the story and wait for other people to tell them or to read summary from post/wiki confirm this video
For me, it's hard to consume Arknights story as Arknights seems to be interested more on building their world rather their story. Like every event, they had to introduce NEW CHARACTER, even though nothing happened and you don't know whether they are important or not, or they just important to the event to the Terra. Does anyone remember Gnosis' sidekick that ran away after Break the Ice? That chick didn't do anything significant and they acted like I should give a damn as to why she's leaving. Bro you could be cut from the story and it wouldn't change a damn thing. Now some arguments to be made that she would appear later.
    WHICH IS ANOTHER FUCKING PROBLEM
YOU WANT TO TELL ME THAT I HAD TO READ THE ENTIRETY OF BREAK THE ICE EVENT JUST TO KNOW ABOUT HER CHARACTER LATER IN THE FORECOMING EVENT? AN EVENT THAT BARELY HAD HER IN IT?

It's not that I hate many characters, but please integrate them into the story and make them actually be something. If you're not going to do that then cut them out and place them on the next event. Put some reference if you want to build them out first.

But no matter the intention, I agree with your points here 100%. It's the main reason I stopped reading the Arknights story very early on and I'm the kind of gacha player that gives every game's story a chance. Even HI3's quantum-techno-babble that takes several paragraphs to describe non-sense that gets deleted by the next chapter.
They drive the exposition like a standard book novel completely ignoring the medium in which its being delivered that actually has images, sound and video to express all those descriptions in a far more engaging way. That's it. That's the word, right there. Chinese writing tends to be poetic and theatrical, but translates very poorly into English. Try to remember all the names of authentic Chinese restaurants you might have come across in your life time and how corny they sound in English. I can tell you, their original Chinese names are all very auspicious and beautiful. The translation absolutely butchers the feeling of it. So when overly long and totally unnecessary philosophical debates with wooden language is tacked on, the entire experience just feels totally POMPOUS and INSUFFERABLE. Having to read AK's walls of text expositions 2 sentences at a time is an actual war crime.

Chapter 8 and Near Light is probably guilty of this. Reading the whole story cutscenes word for word would take about over 8 feckin hours.
I would appreciate it more if the cutscenes takes about 3-4 hours. That way it won't be too long yet not too short. For example, A Flurry to Flame. I had a good time reading the story and it did not took me at the end of the event to finish it.

I think a huge issue, at least for the "nothing happens" point, is how hard they push events rather than the main story. Early on it felt like the events were just there to introduce you to the world, so obviously nothing would happen, it's a side story. but now events feel like the main focus of the game and they hardly promote it when a new main chapter drops :/ As for the game taking itself too seriously, I agree but I actually like it, it's what i expect from Arknights. serious comment here:
I believe the subject is better dealt as a case to case basis. I've noticed myself that the writing's quality differs a lot depending on the side story or event, even though it doesn't make sense since it's the same team. For example, the main story absolutely sucks dog ass and cock & balls, and so do most of the side stories (ex: kazimierz, every sui event). But once in a blue moon, you somehow get the most kino cinematic piece of literature that just makes you want to applaud and cry. I don't know why that happens, but i can definitely remember that feeling when i finished darknights, under tide and il siracusano. I personally despise bad writing and always skip through the stories, but for those specific events i actually managed to sit through them. I don't know what causes this, maybe they export it to the same guy that did the worldbuilding. Though; i do have one theory:
The man that wrote those few competent stories is actually the same guy who wrote LAPPLAND.
When you think about it, the only person who would even be able to save arknights writing could only be indeed the person who wrote the BEST CHARACTER IN THE GAME.
to create a character as masterfully subtle and deep as LAPPLAND, you'd have to be the second coming of dostoyeski, you'd need an innate talent for literature, you'd need to be THAT GUY.
it doesn't come to a surprise that such a connaisseur of the medium would be led to creating such a great character, and such great drama to enrich and accompany it.
When i see this individuals work, and when i lay my eyes on the beautiful art (mostly lappland) that he conceived with his bare hands, i cannot help but shed a tear.
To top that, i can only say one thing: Bravo vince

I would say the at least 60% of the problems stated in the video is caused by the bad translation and the original story being written in Chinese. I read the story in Chinese and often time I find most lines worth thinking through and not many lines are really a waste. And I do agree to the point about some event story doesn’t cause any changes or are there to set up a future story, events such as “Maria nearl, undertide, where the firelight cast, darknight memoirs, an obscure wanderer, Mansfield break, and guiding ahead” are all events that set up the next story, but i believe these events did a good job establishing the context for what is going to happen next and introducing some of the important characters in a way that’s not too sudden or abrupt. And I want to mention that I don’t think guiding ahead is that worthless as you stated, yes practicality nothing was changed about the “stop racism in Laterano” matter, but people like andoain and Cecilia showed up, they are definitely people that could make a change in the laterano situation, so I think the event served well in presenting the current laterano and a possibility for change. Also, I think that some events are not really talking about the big picture, but mainly about the characters(including characters that we can pull) in the story, and I think HG did a good job on portraying these characters with their story and writing.
Anyway, I’m not trying to slander you for your opinions, this video have made me rethink about my experiences reading the stories and I want to share my thoughts out loud. Cheers

On the status quo thing, I'd argue that in the big-picture events involving groups of people like in Guide Ahead, it's a feature, not a bug. People do not like change, and when those people create any kind of system as a group, they become extremely resistant to change, you can either try to slowly change the way people think, or get rid of the system and the people maintaining it entirely. Andoain doing anything short of dismantling The Law won't change anything in Laterano in that span of time.
Even Near Light isn't safe, because the KGCC still exists, sure Nearl and the Adeptus won the fight, sure the KGCC lost their Armorless Union, but they still control the system, they're not changing anything unless they dismantle and replace the old system on their own or convince the people that change is actually good and must happen. Playing nice with them will only bring changes that are basically cosmetic, like what happened with Dikaiopolis, the Infected gained slightly more freedom, but they're still under the KGCC's boot, and they were on the verge of taking what little freedom they had away again.
In the 1st arc, it took a bloody war and the deaths of most of Reunion's leaders for it to finally change, the leaders and their people who want war had to die and be replaced with those who want peace for them to change. Same thing's going to happen to Kazdel. I think Laterano has the best shot at a peaceful shift to an improved system out of all of them, tbh, and it's going to take changing a god's mind for that to happen.

@@chunkysweirdtoaster3081 I agree friend. Making changes in a whole system is never a fast process, with people like Andoain and nearl in the picture, we just have to let them go their way, and time will give us the answers.

The issue with Guiding Ahead is not the "stop racism" tho
Got not one inkling from where you guys got that idea, the racism in laterano is from things beyond the characters control, it is nobody's fault that angels are literally angels. The whole thing is just observation of the situation not a criticism of it per se, there is no moral take away from it, and that's what makes it great, just chracters agreeing with the situation or disagreeing with it and leaving of motu proprio
This is why Arknights is great, because it is not written for children or mass public, go watch Top Gun: Maverick if you want that
(Text is needlessly long in the English translation, that's very much true)

    • @Tk3997
      @Tk3997 9 месяцев назад +11

Its a moronic criticism in general how much or how little changed by the end of story is utterly irrelevant to its quality. There are amazing stories where everything changes and others where nothing does. I will say though that I'd like more writers to learn that serial escalation and setting shattering stakes that CHANGE EVERYTHING aren't needed to produce compelling stories.

    • @kanglinma8104
      @kanglinma8104 9 месяцев назад +7

@@Kantuva i have to clarify that it the “stop racism” claim is from the creator of this video and I do not agree to this point.
There is written proof in the story script itself that the racism in Laterano is from something beyond the control of any character. Andoain had went against the pope to ask “why are only sankta being blessed? Why not the other races?” And the pope answered him by showing him “it’s literally written in the program”, so the guiding ahead story had revealed to us that there is a literal machine behind the laterano religion programmed specifically for the sankta race. But by showing us that andoain and the pope fired at each other but didn’t become fallen under the sankta law, the story is telling us that this machine’s law can actually change. That’s why guiding ahead’s story is so significant.

So I guess I have to come to the defense of Guiding Ahead. It does suffer from the issue that many events do, if being fundamentally a set up for a later event, but we have to keep a few things in mind: Racism isn’t solved in a day, and that the event was really much more about setting up the Sankta/Sarkaz conflict, which they did so in a way that reminded me a bit Darmok.
Not in that they did a retelling of Gilgamesh, but that they laid out the information for the audience to piece together before the characters. I’d argue it’s biggest foible was showing its hand too soon.

For my money the worst written event remains Invitation to Wine, where Lee eventually decides that he’s lost the plot and can’t find it, so he hires a local mountain man to find it for him.
Though that might count as worst plot rather than worst writing. In that case I would point to Stultifera Navis where they ran out of story and the back half of that event played out like the prank where you release a pig in a college building.

On a serious note, I generally agree with the sentiment. So much cool shit, but it feels like I'm 10yr old discovering Minecraft Beta for the first time trying to mine Diamonds to just get to the point. I feel the game struggles a lot with many characters having identical 'voices' which I've found makes writing fanfictions quite difficult if I don't make more changes than I'd really like.
I will disagree on the Laterano point, cause the story didn't feel like it was about changing the status quo; it was about setting up for the next event about what the Pope showed Andoain, and MAYBE the future of the half-breed girl (If she isn't just completely forgotten), and Exu's sister; plenty of stuff for a standard event. The whole status quo thing felt like the C plot that pushes the A and B plots towards THEIR conclusions, which is fine IMO.

Hello, a Visual Novel lover and a person who LOVES precisely Arknights writing here.
So let me write my own opinion, which happens to be a direct opposite.
I love Arknights writing. The only other soshage that managed to invest me in it's story is FGO, but that's for another topic i'll only mention slightly here.
Arknights writing is deeply narrative, it’s meant to be read like a book, not watched like a movie. And here's when the words help, they help you soak into the atmosphere and the rhythm of this world. You hate Guide Ahead, I felt chills reading about Cecilia ringing the bell. Yes, some of Kastchei's Chapter 8 monologue is a bit much, but the scene where Talulah carries Alina's burning body lets you feel the agony, and the scene where Talulah's adoptive parents get killed made my cry because it felt so close to the reality of my own country. Severin dreaming of his son as a collosus upholding a city in Wolumonde is some of the most beautiful pieces of game narration to me. The way "She is a monster. But she is a monster he created" loops around for Lapp's dad in Il Siracusano. Irene's fight vs the Endspeaker made me almost scream from how cool it was. The epicness and sadness of the battle between Chongyue and Waai Fu's dad. Et cetera, et cetera, I'm sure story invested people all have their own favorite moments. But all of that isn't story, it's _writing_. And they _do_ put effort into it.
And for Arknights, more words did GOOD. They helped to set up the atmosphere, to write out the stories instead of fumbling them like in Year 1. We went from Siesta where all interesting stuff ends as soon as you get invested, to Near Light where we're allowed to see the agenda and philosophy of every actor on the scene and savour in their moments of doubt and triumph.
Character speech: I agree the character accent isn't too varied, but the personalities are distinct enough. You won't mistake Mlynar for Blemishine. And I just love the flowery way Mr. Nothing speaks, it brings me enjoyment from every line of his. Did you know he's a very book-ish person, being into literature to polish his mind alongside his martial artist body?
Note: Platinum should be from a pretty well-off family, by the way, being a pegasi and getting to be a semi-popular competition knight right after graduation.
Status quo: the world of Arknights hasn't changed significantly, but there's also no way it would with the size of social problems Arknights is exploring. It's stuff that often doesn't have an answer even in real life, the characters just poof and resolving it would feel quick and unfair. Chen can't change the way Bolivar profits from war in one water gun shot, but together with the reader she realizes the existence of the problem and invites the reader to ponder it with her for the future. Guide Ahead isn't a story about Laterano changing, it's a story about how Fiammetta and Andoain carry themselves in this society.
Sorry for the overly big comparison from a whole different league than a mobile game, but to pick a clear example: all that happened in "Crime and Punishment" was that one guy killed an old lady, thought about it a lot, talked with some people and decided to confess. Does that make it a bad book?
Finally, joke events. Unpopular opinion, but... It's a good thing Arknights doesn't have them. That's when my FGO comparison comes in and also the reason why I'm currently invested in Arknights stronger than I am in FGO. FGO filling 80% of the years with joke events that not only bring nothing to the table, but also flanderize the already existing character arcs killed the enjoyment from the game to make it worth to login only twice a year when a main story chapter drops. If Arknights followed that path, it would be incredibly easy to slip into stuff like Pramanix and Silverash having "funny" family squabble when it would ruin the gravity of their actual conflict (see Mordred and Artoria in FGO falling into that trap. Tragic. Or Lostbelt kings not giving af about the heroes destroying their whole world because we go to the beach, yay). It's a matter of personal taste, but extra stuff like the official Rhodes 123 comics has good humor and I think having that humour in extra stuff is just enough.
The game story has it's own share of funny moments or just characters pinching one another in a way that makes you give a small laughter. Try Code of Brawl, maybe.
To end this long comment, "writing is bad" is actually a very popular take to parrot around in the Arknights fandom, and while I think it's a great thing to argue about, all I wish and advise is for people to make their own opinions by themselves. Read a few stories that don't come from Year 1 (Year 1 Arknights writing _is_ worse compared to the following) and see for yourself if you like it or not.
My personal recommendations would be the Iberia arc (Under Tides + Stultifera Navis), Kazimierz arc (Maria Nearl -> Pinus Sylvestris -> Near Light), Sui events with the exception of Invitation to Wine (that one was nothing burger, alright), and Break the Ice. Main story is all good from Chapter 7-8 and forward, though a bit less dynamic in Chapter 10.
Thank you for reading this long text from a person who loves Arknights long texts.
    P. S. Kal'tsit speech is the dumbest meme the community ever had after the bloodline meme, what she says is pretty easy to understand if you think like 5 seconds on what she's saying.

there are a few fundamental problems with your argument, i will start with your comparison of arknights writing to that of a book. You mentioned that the text in arknights is meant to be read like in a book which is at worst, a blanket statement; there are several issues with this, one it being a fundamental difference between a gacha game writing to a book writing. the gacha one must be preferably, concise and easy to understand so the gameplay loop doesnt break, a book can take its time because the only activity youre doing is reading. the other issue is that theres a limit on how much verbose, either in a book or a game, you can put before exhausting the attention of the reader which arknights is very guilty of. the third issue is that you dont build side stories without tying them to the main plot (in a gacha) because then we fall into the irrelevance and inconsequence of event stories, the few events that DO tie into the main plot are held in high regards (vigilo, darknights, walk in the dust), you dont see any book go off the rails like that.
the rest of the points you made arent very good either, supah never said anything about the "accents" of character, and if youre equating "accent" to form of speech, youre very wrong then. he said and i agree that, most characters regardless of role or relevance have a tendency to describe menial or mundane tasks/actions to its utmost detail and severely enriched with empty words.
your point about the status quo doesnt work because i already stated that its completely irrelevant due to the nature of the event story, which supah also stated that it only exists to build yet another event in a gacha game. the example of "crime and punishment" you gave its moot because thats the entire premise of the book, and most importantly, its the main plot, its not a side story.
in the end, arknights is not a book, its a gacha game, i believe if the game were to take its events, those that have nothing to do with the main plot, less seriously, there wouldnt be as many negative opinions on its writing because we already know those are inconsequential. be it joke events or not, the current writing style does not fit the scheme of plot development in this game, isnce they just become irrelevant theres no reason to ever read so much verbose for no gain, some may like how that single story unfolds but they are very few.
to finish this, i will say that arknights writing and maybe even as a whole, suffers from too many elements it wants to tackle in a short timeframe, it doesnt help that its event stories dont relate to one another, they exist in a vacuum, and willing to say it is because they sell more by doing this type of isolated and some outlandish events (dossoles, so long adele) than following a single narrative.

    • @AelenAltria
      @AelenAltria 9 месяцев назад +29

@a-1455 Allow me to disagree. You start with arguing what a gacha story "must" be, but there is no "must." All stories are built differently, and so are all gacha game stories. You may prefer something like BA (or any other gacha game), and that's alright, but I prefer Arknights, which takes its time to set up the atmosphere. Rather than claiming something is "bad," please leave us, long narrative story enjoyers, at least some games to have.
Secondly, you talk about the relevance of event stories to the main story. I think this is another moment where Arknights is built a bit differently: it's not so much a game with a "main story" and "extras," but a collection of different stories happening on Terra, with one story about Rhodes getting slightly more screentime. The stories are complete enough to be perceived as complete stories in themselves. For Nearl, the Kazimierz tournament is her own "main story," more important to her than the brawl with Reunion. For Dorothy, her "main story" would be Columbian settlers, not Sarkaz in Victoria. I would agree with you if these stories couldn't hold their own ground, but they can. Most of Arknights events can be just taken and published as a light novel right away, and it'd work. I'd also say that something like Stultifera Navis is light years ahead of Darknights Memoirs even if the latter is more relevant for what we call the "main story".
Thirdly, it's plainly untrue that Arknights events don't influence each other. The happenings in one country do influence the brewing of things in another. Iberia isn't the focus of GA, but Laterano's decision to abandon Iberia in its demise is shown there. War brewing in Victoria prompts Silverash to speed up modernization, leading to BI. It's also a separate joy to see thematical parallels even in stories which aren't directly connected: how right away after a story about modern capital fumbling new tradition in Near Light, we get to see the opposite situation in Break the Ice which came right after, and how its chess analogy carries over to Invitation to Wine, showcasing a different approach of the Second Brother about turning a country into a gameboard, but in a more disinterested fashion, and the figure of Lee who can't do these board games at all, but is a man of wisdom and understanding emotion - someone the previous story lacked so much. And it goes on and on like a spiral and makes Arknights the more enjoyable the more you interact with it.
What I'd agree about is that Arknights has abysmal gameplay and story integration. I myself advise to farm stages first, then return and use the story reading mode to enjoy the text without hurry and "where's the stage???" anticipation. That's a flaw. But that's an "interface" flaw, not a "writing" flaw. And there's no true rule to what writing "must" be.

just because other gachas don't do it doesnt mean AK has to follow the same formula. That being said, bad translation + purple prose + walls of text are a issue, if people are straight up not reading your stories i agree that's an issue to be adressed. I just hope AK never decided to ''dumb down'' it's narrative, since the writting at it's best is exactly why i fell in love with the game.@@a-1455

@@AelenAltria i dont play BA so i dont know anything about it, what i do know is that my entire life has been reading anything i come across, thats why i say that theres an specific way to write a gacha game story, for the sake of efficiency and profit, a gacha always have segmented event stories that only correlate with others and its main story because they sell more that way, not that this negates the need to develop a coherent story. the very argument that every side story develops in a vacuum is still true mainly *because* sometimes the game takes itself very seriously and not at the same time (again, something like: Darknights memoir compared to so long adele). theres simply no way to make a concise story when you go off both ends which then fall into irrelevance due to the vaccum a side story has.
a way to enjoy the whole argument or story arknights has to offer is to read trough the text, which then comes back to my point about the need to write everything as verbose as possible, that just turns off too many people, you just ignored what i said about the argument as a whole anyway. i didnt segment anything in my comment, everything i said is one single argument that you just didnt construct onto. you just focused on the story telling part and not the whole reason were talking about arknights writing.

The main reason why I stopped reading the main story and the event stories and always skipped them is because the stories tend to go on WAYYY longer than they need to be, a lot of the time for no reason. It's like I'm reading novels as long as the Divergent trilogy. I really love the story/plot of Arknights, the concepts and lore, the aesthetic, and all that good stuff, but the writing in this game is far too tedious to read to the point where I skipped it all and would just read a summary from the wiki. I don't mind reading stories for my ultimate fave operators, but other than that, I only have 24 hours in a day, I'm a tired college student, I'm not spending 4-5 hours reading all that.

Thing is, Arknights story in-game is structured like a novel/similar to one, so while I'm interested in the story, i often don't have time to sit through and read like 1-2 pages worth of dialog just to advance 1 stage.
It also doesn't help that my job involves reading multiple books/novels MULTIPLE TIMES back to back. Guess that's why despite being lvl90 im still at ch3 in the main story.

I agree that the writers tend to write tons of bullshit to say anything on a misguided effort to sound deep and smart.
But I also think some criticism here is exaggerated, mostly the claim that "nothing happens"
us 40K fans are used to this type of writing, Arknights prioritizes building up a setting for stories rather than following up storylines.
the purpose of events like Guide Ahead is to show you pieces of the world, with their races, culture and struggles.
And still, Guide ahead ends with the founding of the Terra United Nations, that is not nothing.
In fact the story of Guide Ahead is not about changing the Status Quo, it's about preserving it, that's why the guy trying to change the status quo is the "bad guy" of the event.
Laterano changes, you destroy one of the only decent places in Arknights, Laterano stays the same, it can help the rest of the world get better slowly, that was the pope's point.
But of course, Supah has admitted to be a "too much text" guy, he wouldn't know about that.

Mandarin is a bitch to translate, and although I haven't looked at the CN transcripts, I can imagine from just how verbose Kal'tsit's lines are that she likely uses very archaic Mandarin. It isn't that bad to read in CN, given the writing structure, but it's very hard to convey the nuances in the languages in English without turning into word salad, or just simplifying everything.

I think the issue is solely with the story being told as a visual novel. IMO outside of dating sims, visual novels suck as a method of story telling, largely due to the fact that you can't really have "show don't tell" with it. One of my biggest issues when it comes to writing is thinking up a scene that seems awesome to me and then trying to convey what I just visually thought to paper, its not an easy thing to due, and its hard not to lose the magic of a scene when bogging it down with words to say whats happening to begin with. IMO for storytelling mediums anime>manga>light novels when all 3 are given the same care in being created, solely because you can do more show and less tell which highly elevates a story.
Now personally I'm able to sit through Arknights' story no problem, but I understand that the medium used for telling the story sucks ass, I simply just like the characters too much to not read through it and I don't trust someone to give me a second hand account of the story that is inevitably filtered through their personal biases rather than reading it for myself.

I’m not sure how many visual novels you’ve been through but I would say Arknights does not do a good job of selling the medium.

The thing is the current writing is about opposing views of life of all the characters involved it just so happens that there's also always an over arching plot that usually as the video says gets nowhere because the characters argue about beliefs too much instead of taking action which is what Arknights is all about. No one character or a small group can just go up tackle a problem, be powerhouses and then make a big enough difference in their country. That's why Nearl Light works because it had a tournament with celebrity fighters that could actually inspire change. Great Chief Gavial Returns works because it's literally the same as Nearl Light a presidential election in the form of a tournament. The simplicity of the approach of both cultures allows 1 person to have so much power to make a difference.
Meanwhile Guiding Ahead is about angry bird girl who is an armed military personel escorting exiled also secretly a military personel while looking for revenge against an old friend who also just happens to be the leader of an ongoing rebellion? Militia group? whatever. Since he is not killed nothing happens about the big issue that there is a cult who denies the current system but the characters themselves aren't there to stop that nor uncover the secrets of Laterano only Andoain was and it shattered his disbelief of the current system so hard that he gave up for now.
So no that event was not all about racism in Laterano it was about the red angry bird trying to find closure to an event that destroyed her circle of friends from one of said
friends and he just so happens to not care about her goals cuz he has bigger goals and that's to change the country through a cult rebellion but he was not ready for the truth about the system and angry bird was not ready to let go of her grudge and does not understand how her angel friends do not hold the same grudge for their old friend all while some random kid popped up to possibly also shatter the belief of Laterans on how their racism against the Sarkaz currently works but this is not the main point of the story it just seems like it cuz it affects a bigger cast than just our villain and the operator characters involved and that they took time to also flesh out the events of this supposedly irrelevant part of the story. All that was done to involve executor and enforcer in the story somehow and so that the pope can use the kid being a mix breed when the debate about ideals with Andoain and a few talks with Mostima happens and that the readers would understand the gravity of that kid's existence when it comes to why it is relevant to bring her up in a debate about beliefs with 2 long time Laterans who have questions about the system.
Their all too long I agree but most of them even majority of Il Siracusano was actually about the characters and the overarching plot which is usually logically the bigger societal issue always takes the backseat in story telling that's why it's so long. That's also why none of them except Nearl Light are default heroes save the world from big baddie or erroneous system or something straightforward and basic like that because they take time to argue if baddie really is a baddie or is it just bad for you and your people and if system was so wrong or is it just imperfect just like all systems are and your group just so happen to be on the receiving end of the imperfect part of it. It's always a clash of individual beliefs, opinions, goals, ideals, during the clash for objectives which are usually the task needed for the bigger picture to move a little hence why it takes a backseat.
    In summary:
the writing is Man VS Man which makes Man question himself turning the writing into Man VS Himself and when Man has formulated his own thoughts and is now clear on which side he stands with he confronts other characters again and it becomes Man VS Man again and then a few steps are made towards the the bigger goal/issue making the final bits Man VS The World which is usually already too far into the event that it leads to setting up the next steps and not even the climax most of the time for the next event which continues with Man VS The World until another character clashes ideals repeating the cycle on the follow up event. God I wish they do end up ultimately shortening the text.
Bad summary at top better summary starts now:
Writing priority is Opening of story> intro of characters involved> how their tied to each other> reasons to go up against or team up with each other> characters grow from clashing ideals> They actually get something related to bigger issue done> more smaller conflicts are resolved> big thing for that specific events unfolds for the climax> thing is solved or big thing for the event is solved but an even bigger thing looms in the shadows for next event. < summary ends here.
So yeah they can be shortened to not include all those smaller conflicts between characters but most of their stories would end up being a small group tackling a big world/society/govermental issue and not getting anything done or they shift the tone of the story to make every campaign of our heroes be as successful and straighforward as Nearl Light's "win the tournament and become the people's champion to start a change" which just isn't arknights. I still wish they would shorten it but arknights is one of those long lots of talking less action scene mafia movies that are still surprisingly deep, dark and good in a thought provoking manner even though not being an adrenaline rush.
Man I tried to make it as long as an Arknights cutscene dialogue so Supah won't read it guaranteed but if he does ironically read it then we have succeeded in making Supah read the comments and eat his own words at the beginning of the video and that's a W for us in the comments section hahahahah. I don't even have a brick for him except he did not get that Arknights ain't about solving the big issues in one big push but more like we do this to hopefully ignite a spark of change and even then that's usually on the sidequests list of the characters and their mostly all there for personal/work reasons and not some form of heroism activity hence the hundreds of smaller conflicts per event story resulting in way too much dialogue.

@@vulcanmemes9770 If I add a skip button we won't get Supah to read something so long that would make him go "ah fuck they got me to read something as long as what the game would make me read but worse there's no gameplay after it" since he'll also jump for that skip button hahahaha. Don't worry though this scene is permanently added on the interlude section of the game YTknights so you can read it slowly or whenever you have more time.

It's amazing how unenjoyable AK's story is. The thing is most gachanerds aren't even looking for Texhnolyze or Patlabor 2 level writing in their vidya, they just want it to be FUN. Look at FGO or BA or whatever, sure you'd look retarded comparing it to novels like 100 years of Solitude or The Idiot, but they actually manage to be entertaining since they're leaning into otaku aesthetics and being sincere about it. HG meanwhile are incredibly pretentious with their writing, trying to make the AK story out to be deeper or more profound than it actually is when they don't actually have the writing chops to pull it off. So you get a product that satisfies noone.

my brain can't stop paying attention to the MHW gameplay in the background
but honestly tho, u might be cooking here cuz I'm actually behind in story stages because I want to read through all the cutscenes, but it's so time-consuming and sometimes mentally taxing that I just keep putting it off until I have the time. Same goes for some other gachas too like Genshin 💀(I quit for some months now) and sometimes PGR.
But on the point of some event stories not changing the status quo, IMO sometimes that isn't needed since the event is either introducing new characters/regions/lore for worldbuilding n such or just slowly building up to the bigger events of a region (hoping Laterano gets treated well with its next event).

Indeed, the writing is a lot of times unneccesarily complicated and long ass and a lot of people hate that lul.
But I have to give claps to the writing team for being so consistent basically throughout the game with their lores and ideas. Eventhough the writing is a mess to read, the ideas still get through surprisingly really well and comprehensible if you sum it up lmao.
I have a lot of stories with really good writing and ways to express the idea but the inconsistencies and lores just totally ruin the story. The characters just basically contradict themselves but AK I see very little of that.
Also the main reason I believe this happen is because HG cares more about expanding its world and interactions between characters and groups more than actual readable dialouges. From what I have seen recently, they have toned down the wording and shits a lot more ever since after the 3rd anniversary. The lastest chap 13 and 12 are much more readable. A conversation between Eblana and the Damatzi cluster actually feels threatening and serious because they go directly into the point and not talk philosophical. More recent events after chap Dorothy Vision has been more readable to me too.
Another evidence of that they have learnt to tone down a bit I think is with the AK anime. They have reduced a lot of unncessary dialouges and wordings which a lot of VN and LN suffer from when adapting them. Its hard to believe the people managing the anime is the same team that writes the AK story so yes they def have learnt something.
Also the Blackhole thing is a bit of an exaggeration, they say that but if they actually care about physics, it will actually take a few couple of millions of years for a blackhole to swallow something orbitting it. By that time I hardly doubt that the planet Terra even has anything left on it. The Blackhole thing is more like of a drama shock factor in the story rather than something to actually worry about/
