The dynamic between you and your dad is awesome. Made me chuckle a couple of times. Your tangents and rants are amazing. lol. In all seriousness congrats to your dad and please have him on again.
Best moment of this video was when your Dad finally realized you have ADHD. 😂 Honestly this is the best real comic channel on RUclips and also you have the best auctions site around. Subscriber 4 life here!
Absolute great video! I had no idea your dad was a key player with PSA. This level of honest and open conversation eased so many of my concerns with the new company and I can honestly say I'll give them a try when they start taking books. Thank you both!
This was an outstanding interview! I like how Mark talks about grading, collecting, and this history of the hobby and would like to see more from him publicly. Do some other interviews, Mark! You're a great speaker for PSA and will certainly help drive early adoption of their comic book grading product!
That is one of the biggest guys I've ever seen in my entire life. Especially being an older gentleman. Glad to see it honestly. He doesn't look like the comic book type, which is always great. GG lol. Congrats and good luck.
It's refreshing to hear that PSA is taking all of the comments and ideas the community has been saying: UV protection, new slab design that doesn't follow the standard, protection of the book if dropped, etc. I would love to see PSA simply use .5 intervals, meaning we'd only see 9.0, 9.5, and 10s for the high grades.
I am so happy for your Dad, it is great that PSA values his experience and knowledge, for many industries do not and suffer from ageism. Your Dad is not only bringing his grading talents and wisdom, but his ageless guns as well...:) Do a poll on how many people thought "Man...I have to hit the gym" after seeing your Dad in this video....:)
It was a good interview. Please do it again and let your father just speak without interrupting him. It made it very difficult to listen to. He needs to be heard to completion of his thoughts!
Love your channel, I do work with Sports Cards and Comics. The card world is very different but is opening up to the Comic market and vice versa. To create the same idea of opening a pack and having a luck factor. Comics in Polybags with inserts for incentive redemption cards or comics would do that. It would bust sales for the show as people would buy multiples of each book. As well books with no significance or later in the run could hold value because of the chance of a 1/1 redemption or similar. Would love to talk more in detail someday .
@@ComicBookInvestmentsSo if your dad is going to be a grader at PSA, does that mean that face-jobbed books where spine wear has been manipulated onto the back will get high grades?
Congratulations to Mark Wilson on joining PSA. Looking forward to seeing the final prototype cases and labels for books, as well as price tiers. I’m grateful to hear about the care/security for individual submissions and learning more about my potential grading opportunities with PSA. Great video with your Dad! Thank you.
Great Convo, ur pop seems pretty awesome, and damn Dude's got some Guns, lol. I think a big negative for the comic industry was removing Newsstand books. My first book ever as a kid was when i came across comics in a 7-11, loved the medium ever since. Kiids don't hav that option today.
Cool Vid Dave. I want to try them out. Three questions If I may. 1-Will the PSA SLABS fit in existing Slab Boxes? 2-What if any is the promotional Pricing or if not then the NORMAL pricing expected to be? 3-Is PSA going to Clean and Press as well and if so Pricing? Thanks Dave!!
You guys are awesome! I've always loved you as a person from your rants to your "have a good days". Your dad is awesome too and I love the talk. And yes his past status as well as being the head of PSA, is about like having Stan Lee as your dad. Awesome Dave thank you for bringing him on!! Very excited to see what PSA brings to the table. Wondering though whether or not PSA feature an inner well. I think it was said that it did because we don't want to creep engine scenario like with CGC. Did he say there was UV protection with the cases?
PSA Vault is just turning comics into NFTs 😂 PSA cases being UV resistant is important and cool. Doubt the standard will be as safe as a crafti, but probably more than a comic capsule. Maybe the fortress case will actually be the new standard for high value protection, I could believe it. Great that they'll be tamper evident tho. I've heard the PSA case is really hefty, which doesn't sound great for shipping but probably worth. Everyone wants a new label, I doubt they'll even try to improve it- regardless of all the negative feedback. Which is gonna hurt secondary market prices right off the bat. I like mostly everything they're doing, but I very much doubt they'll keep that level playing field he mentioned. Sooner than later Goldin will be shill bidding PSA books up to create a sense of prestige or being another contender for high value books.😊
You do need to take some medicine. Great video other than that. Your Dad going to do a great job at PSA. Very mature and is able to deal with any obstacles PSA throws at him if he can do an interview with you. 😂
As a teenage boy it wasn't lewd comic covers that prevented me from collecting back in 1985, it was the price of comics. When I started collecting in the early 80's comics were about .75 cents a piece and I was priced out as a kid when comic prices jumped to $1.25. I couldn't continue collecting on my allowance, and I was collecting around 8 titles. There is no way that a kid can become a collector of modern comics at the prices that are charged. I can only do it in this economy because my wife's a doctor. The prices of comics are the biggest limiting factor on how wide the collector base can become.
This whole skit reminds me of hey day look what I know, instead of the psa conversation it was advertised as. Sometimes sticking to the plan is OK instead of getting distracted by something shiny & not taking your medication prior to the interview. 😂
Your Dad just described me at 49:15 to this day. I'm almost finished with my run of Fantastic Four 101 - 200 in CGC 9.0 or better (only 101 and 103 to go). And yes, I'm also upgrading issues in my collection (about 75% is 9.4 or better).
Not a coincidence that you need issue 101 and 103 in high grade. Coming from a high grade FF collector. Those 2 issues are not easy to find. Same with 107.
Congrats! What a PSA huh? Question, when you talk about restoration, and even cleaning falling out of favor. What do you think about pressing? There are a lot of 'master pressers' out there getting 9.8's from books that clearly were not that grade to begin with. It would be utterly ridiculous for someone to be able to press up to a 9.9 consistently, because it would invalidate the entire grading process...and I believe it essentially already has. Since, with every book that gets upgraded in grade from this artificial disguising of flaws, it inflates the high grade census and thus brings down the price of the book. The coin bubble popped because goods were overvalued, and this seems like something very similar. I know certain other grading houses even offer pressing, and every youtuber seems to think it is essential (even for books with no flaws, which makes no sense). Do you think pressing will eventually go the way of trimming etc.? So that *actual* flawless books can be the only ones slabbed with high grade labels?
Dave, I can assume no Custom labels? Also, I consider you a very accurate grade evaluator. I can't wait to see how you evaluate their graded books as they come out. Hopefully you will be objective as in past with CBCS.
A suggestion to stand out among the current grading companies .. Have a stores or offices in major cities that accepts walk in comic grading submissions .. they can start with NYC , LA ,Chicago - I think a big barrier to many people using CGC or CGCS is the idea of packing and sending off their comics. I would definitely try out a grading service if I could just walk in with my bagged comics and they accept my comics.
Pricing wise: membership ala cgc or free for all like cbcs Where they located ? International shipping? Bulk shipping? Canadian location? Label changes? Saw some mock ups on ig. It was not specifically stated that grading scale is the same, so is it? Loved the video! Clearly lots of knowledge in this interview. Loved your dad’s attitude. He should be the face of all this with psa. I don’t know anything about them. Watched whole thing. Nothing on updating labels to correct long standing appearance errors. Makes me want to send to psa! I always wondered why the grading system jumps points. Why aren't there 9.3's, 9.7's, etc.? On another subject, did your dad used to display/sell at conventions in the 80's? What was the company name when he was dealing? I'm guessing he advertised in Overstreet?
Interesting idea for vaulting comics. I can see scenarios where someone wants to pass down their collection to someone, might want to think about that. Also, what happens when someone passes away and they haven’t done anything like that?
Yea I’m not sure either. Obviously a small use case but everyone dies eventually and I can’t imagine the PSA warehouse being infinite in terms of space lol.
Dave I’ll be at fan expo in Toronto in August where cgc will be there. Is it better to give it in person as I want to submit daredevil #37 and fantastic four annual #8.
CGC controls the census. I have seen a 9.2 look perfect. Not a single wear and tear, no white areas. Even the bindery part of the spine has no white on it. Perfect book. Never seen a book so perfect in my life. No interior damage. Nothing. But of course, CGC provides no grader's notes. Both aspects of this is frustrating. Getting a 9.2 for a perfect-looking book, and not able to understand why it received it.
