    Glad to see I'm not the only one who pushes those sliders to the extremes just to see what it looks like. My whole approach is to go to each end, back and forth, and slowly hone in to the "acceptable" range of effect I'm looking for, and then see if I can find the sweet spot.

    Hi Mark, thank you so much for this video, really cool to see the raw, completely unedited photo and the end result after postprocessing. I don't know about everybody else but I'd be really interested to see more videos where you go through the whole process of editing a photo from scratch. The reason I say this is because I always thought that a lot of the amazing photos I've seen are largely captured out of camera with little post-processing (and I'm sure a lot of them are!), but this video really does a good job of showing the whole end to end process. Thanks again!

    It is so refreshing to see the SOOC shot versus the final edit.The hacks you shared are indeed very helpful. I have a park not too far from home where I generally go biking. There are a series of bridges on the trail, and one particular set of bridges always fascinated me. First, because they were two bridges together. Second, because the lighting always lent itself to some creative and moody shots. Well, this spring it finally happened. I was able to get a shot with the right light where I wanted it to be. However, I still had to hack the image in the editing to accentuate the mood in the shot. Hacks such as what you showed are a great tool. Thanks for sharing.

    Great work Mark .
    I am currently working through a mountain of shots taken on what will probably end up being a once in a lifetime , early winter trip to New Zealand.
    We were on a tight schedule so I had to take my shots as and where I found them. I use my (limited) editing skills to reproduce the image as captured by my mind's eye.
    I cut my teeth on black and white film photography around 40 yrs ago . Taking the photo was just one small step in the process , so I have no dogmatic ideological prejudice against modern editing techniques.
    While I try to achieve as much in camera as possible , editing is just another part of the process and is not something for which you should ever feel the need to apologize.

    Thanks for another great video. I learned your hack n.3 (dappled dodge) the hard way, trying to recreate moments that I have enjoyed but I wasn't able to capture. It happens very often that a cluster of small clouds partially covers the sun, creating a lot of sunspots everywhere. These short moments are hard to capture out on the trails unless I hold the camera in the hand for the whole hike. And here comes the hack into play.

    Modern technology can sometimes be a challenge, but I'm sure Ansel Adams would use the latest in editing software if he was alive and working today. Nice video, thanks.

    • @nonanon666
      @nonanon666 4 года назад

      @xrhode "The negative is the score, the print is the symphony" - Ansel Adams.
      There's no need to wonder whether or not he would have manipulated images in the digital age, because he spelled out quite clearly his belief that in-camera capture was only the first stage of creating a beautiful image.

    • @nonanon666
      @nonanon666 4 года назад

      @xrhode 95% of the world are shooting in JPEG, with their camera or phone making the edits for them, editing RAW is just taking manual control. The human eye doesn't compress a series of distant valleys into a neat layered composition, we don't see hummingbirds frozen in time, and we don't see star trails. We don't even see most of what we think we see, we're mostly viewing a temporary stored memory of what our eyes recently scanned, our actual cone of focus is much narrower than we perceive. So there is no argument for "keeping it real" vs "faking and manipulating", everything more advanced than a pinhole camera is manipulating reality.

    • @nonanon666
      @nonanon666 4 года назад

      @xrhode Yeah but here's where I find the really interesting philosophical question comes in.
      Mark did not paste in another file from Photoshop.
      He merely accentuated light data which was captured by the sensor and recorded as ones and zeros in a RAW file.
      If you shoot with a tiny crappy cellphone sensor (or use a FF DSLR to shoot the inside of your lens cap), there will be little or no light data captured for Lightroom to boost or suppress.
      Nothing to work with.
      However, Mark's sensor has indeed captured all of the light information which we see in the final edit.
      The photons were really there that day, they really struck the sensor.
      Lightroom is not capable of inventing and adding data, it can only suppress or amplify that information which existed and was captured.
      So Mark has not copy/pasted some yellow and orange pixels into the file to "fake" golden light.
      What he's actually doing with that slider is suppressing the blue and green spectrums to allow the naturally occurring red spectrum light to take centre stage.
      I get where you're coming from, but I want you to ponder that distinction between compositing, versus working with light data which actually existed and hit the sensor at the moment the shutter was opened.
      It gets interesting when you think of it that way, doesn't it?

    A little hack in return for you Mark, move your cursor over the black band next to one of the panels you were minimising, say to the left of where it says "Basic", and right-click. Select the option for "Solo mode" and then close the menu. Now when you open a panel, like HSL the one you are on auto closes as it only lets one panel be open at a time :)

    I love videos that show the before and after, and not just the finished product. Affirms that I'm not the only one that keeps missing that epic light!
    On another note, is that a jet engine in the background, or just your Mac? 😁
