Great! You saved me $. My wife's car key was stuck and I watched maybe 8 videos to learn what was going on. Yours was the one that did the trick. Just adjusting the gear shift lover did it for me. I figure watching RUclips and trying the different fixes saved me at least $100 so I paid myself $40 and hour to fix her car. Thanks a bunch man.
Thank you Alan for watching and sending me a comment. Glad this helped you save some $$$$$$. Sorry for the out of focus video. This Jeep I fixed has been great without one problem since. He brought the Jeep over yesterday for an oil change, so I happen to have another look at things to make sure everything was working ok. And it is, speaking with him, everything related has been fine. Now, I need some sort of a oil drain guide, because when you pull the filter off, oil gets everywhere! I have tried to make a cardboard guide, no luck there. Oil gets onto the frt diff, steering rack and frame area. What a mess. I use brake Kleen to clean this area off. Thanks Again, Wayne S.
3 things actually 4. 1) Don't move camera so fast. 2) Focus, Focus ,Focus. 3) Don't move flashlight so fast like a light show. 4) Good informational video.
Thanks for the comments Cliff. For sure, the camera guy needs to be either fired or back school for retraining. I now use my other camera for videos. Thanks for watching, hope your Jeep is in better working order. See other ones that I shot, rear brakes, dust covers, shifter, trans pan replacement and others. Cheers! Wayne S.
Very useful. I have a 2007 Jeep Liberty and noticed the cable was loose at the steering column when looking under the panel. I am going to try and reconnect it first before i do a full blown replacement. Only critique I have, is I wish the video were a little clearer and steady. The info was great, but video was blurry when going in for a close up. Still, very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks for watching, Hope it helps. Just take your time, no hurry to slap it back together. Yes, the video was shaky and blurry at best...I shot it with my old Sony 7.2 pixel unit. I would really like to redo this video, but the guy won't let me take his Jeep apart as everything works great now. Wayne
Bro thanks for this video. My problem is My shifter is stuck in Park. I have to literally use all my force to press that shifter button to take it out of Park. It doesn’t do this in any other Gear and putting it into park isn’t difficult either. Just taking it out of Park
message to Dane Guffey: Go to the 2:00 mark and listen to my tips. Remember the key has to be ON or Forward, then move that yellow clip, It is has been a long time since I did this one, had to watch the video again. Let Me Know as I could not message you back directly.
I have an 06 Jeep Liberty , replaced the cable last night ; the car wouldn’t release the key and finally stopped going into gear without moving the cable . Got the key able to remove but now can’t get it into gear . Any ideas ? Is there an adjustment on the cable ? Your video helped on the removal and installation.
Regarding stuck key: What worked for me was a solution found on a Jeep forum. Put shifter in Low gear to access set screw near base of shifter knob. Set screw takes a torx driver but I used an Allen key with no problem. Loosen screw all the way . Lift knob up and hold while retightening screw. The amount the knob raised was hardly noticeable but when I move shifter to Park the key comes out. Hope it lasts.
Good info my dude! I think they should pay for it as many that have broke. I mean 8 out of 10 do this and rear window plastic clips break... I will never buy another jeep
Should be a safery recall in my books. And don't get me started about those DAMN window clips! Changed a few of those already. [not my vehicle, as I own an 04' Subaru Forester Cross Sports] Yup, imported from Japan. Turbo'd, 2.0L, 5 spd! check the channel, you'll see it. Cheers! Stumpr1

I'm a Toyota guy and I couldn't find a Toyota truck. So I bought a 2007 jeep liberty. My problem is that I can't get the vehicle from Park. Now I pushed the adapter to the side and I can manually move the transmission by pulling black tab. But the shifter won't let me shift at all. I even tried to remove the console and removed every screw and it won't come off. I own a Toyota Highlander that has a white button that eliminates this issue. Domestic vehicles like to make it hard to fix these issues. So you have to bring it to the dealership.
Hey.....Jeeps have these problems, should be a Recall Saftey Issue. When you press the button [on the shifter] are you able to pull the shifter into any gear? [foot on brake/key on or engine running]
@@stumpr1 Nope. I tried everything. At first, just rocking the car let the shifter release into any gear that I selected. Then, when I finally got it home and went to get the mail out of my mailbox... She wouldn't move at all. So I opened up the center console and pushed the rubber sleeve off of that shifter nipple and manually pulled the transmission into gear. The next day I changed the brake switch. Its only $17.99 at O'Reilly. But the shifter still will not let me shift. I'm pretty sure its a safety feature, I just can't figure out what needs replaced. I.e. neutral safely switch, shifter, etc. I can start it with no problems. I can manually shift it from inside the console (not the actual shifter). I tried moving the shifter with the brakes pressed and not pressed. I tried releasing the brake as I shift. I tried shifting the shifter as I engaged the brake. I even tried engaging and disengaging the parking brake and no luck. I even made sure my cruise control was off and tried to shift. I had someone make sure all my brake lights work when I press the brake. I tried everything. I even looked for loose vacuum hoses under the hood. Nothing. I was starting to like Jeep. Jeep handled the snow better then my F150. This is frustrating. I bought from an older lady at work that had it sitting for a while. I drove this Jeep over 2,000 miles and then this happened. Very frustrating. 2007 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7 liter. Seems to have these issues a lot according to the internet.
I have a question, would the shifter lock in park also if the cable failed? the 06 jeep liberty i have will release the key and allow the vehicle to start, but the shifter will not move at all. the jeep just got a new battery.
It is a possibility, does it look like is has come loose? Could also be the neutral safety switch, as the car only starts in that gear shifter location.

+Raul Pastor, you cannot shift out of Park? is that your question? They told you to put it into neutral and try starting it? you have a lot going on in your response here. First question: can the shifter move out of park? If yes, Does the Jeep move? [forward or reverse] let's start here.
Could be the Neutral safety switch. Try starting the Jeep in NEUTRAL. Keep your foot on the brake when doing this. Does the Jeep start in Neutral? Yes/No.
Not sure if the Liberty and the Wrangler use the same set up. But I would not put it past the MFG, as they cross use parts from one vehicle to another to save $$$. Check a Wrangler forum and see what those guys/girls say.
you have to either, remove the shifter handle completly to access the button or try using a very small flat blade screw driver and try to pry the button out. Dirt/grime can also cause these to stick it.
I have a question our 06 liberty won't move when placed in any gear, our four wheel drive lever moves freely does not act like it should and have to place it in neutral to change from 2 lo to 4 lo to 4 hi. any suggestions on what it could be?
weird stuff. First off, with the transfer case in ANY position, [other than neutral] do you drive or reverse? You are asking a few questions not related to each other.....Your 4x4 shifter linkage could be disengaged. Lever moves freely [does not act like it should] there should me a mechanical feel to it. I wonder if that linkage disconnected for some reason.
It does not move at all in drive or reverse, I went out to give it another look because I refuse to let it stump me and at the very rear of the transfer case what I think is the 4x4 linkage popped off. probably a stupid question but I should replace that whole cable and not just the rubber grommet that goes inside the eyelet looking thing. thanks for the help
Hey James, we did replace the cable [from what I remember] Not only that, but on this Jeep I did replace the actual shifter assembly, as the lower end was worn out. [plastic bits worn out] Found a model year older with the steel brackets and installed that one. This should be a recall as so many of these things are with their problems. I say, replace that cable and try that first. Let me know, Wayne
Ok, got it. You're going to have to remove the shifter handle and inspect it. Possible that something at the lower end of the shifter handle is causing it to jamb up. Or the button that gets pushed, is caught up inside. Either way, that handle has to come apart and inspected. Let me know what you find. Wayne S.
