Bam literally lived under a rock. As your knowledge of the tower developes, so does Bam as a character. Unlike most isekai anime protagonists, Bam actually gets more development. The world building is massive and in terms of length, it's considered to be the one piece of manhwa to give you the gist of it. Edit: If you do read the manhwa, be warned; the art starts out a bit wonky but if you push through, it becomes some of the best art that you might've seen (that's just my opinon). I hope you get to enjoy this series even more! (oh and R4chel gets worse😅)
I think you're making a slight mistake in the analysis of Bam/Rachel. I think because of Bam's unique back story a lot of people don't fully account for it when viewing Bam. Bam 'grew up' COMPLETELY alone basically in the dark. There was one source of light (NOT a Sun/Moon [Star]) coming from the ceiling. There was no grass or animals just rocks and darkness. I don't think there's another fictional MC that has that kind of back story. It's not like 'growing up alone' depicted in a lot of Japanese manga/etc where some kid is living 'alone' in a house/apartment in a major city or they're 'alone' because they don't have associations with the people around them. Bam didn't have people, or anything, around him. Rachel was the ONLY living thing he ever met/knew/associated with before entering the Tower. Calling her a "close friend" isn't accurate, in my opinion, because it implies other relationships existed. They didn't. I don't even think it's totally accurate to call her a "mother figure" because...very few characters, if any, only know their mothers. Most characters grow up in some type of society, whether it's dystopian or utopian, where they have other influencers on their personalities. Bam isn't chasing Rachel because he's romantically attached to her or because she's his friend like Naruto saw Sasuke. Also, I'm pretty sure the anime, IIRC, shows how strongly he rejects the idea she's his "girlfriend" when Khun suggests it. My only point is you can't hold Bam to the same standards as other characters. The uniqueness of the Bam/Rachel relationship should ALWAYS be remembered.

As far as the confusion regarding how Baam got in the tower, the anime depicted it a little different than the manhwa. Originally, the doors were drawn under both Baam and Rachel with Rachel dissapearing first. The doors appeared after Rachel said she was going up the tower, so it agreed by the TOG community that the doors appeared after that because Baam was thinking, "I'm going to go to the tower then," after she said that. Then, she fell through the doors first since she was under him, but they only opened once, unlike how the door appeared twice with a giant hand grabbing Baam. I don't know why they chose to do that since it makes it feel like Baam was chosen when irregulars aren't chosen. Maybe they felt like it showed that the tower, not Headon, was choosing him. Anyhow, it doesn't make sense still since it's stated that Baam opened the door. Who opens a door and then slams it in their own face?
" They don't get too deep in the background of characters.." Reading the original webcomic, we are just out of a 2 and a half month of backstory for a single side character, and it was not even the earlier arcs (plural) dedicated to the background of the main characters that would probably need an entire season of anime for just one flashback ^^ So yeah, ToG delivers on what you are left wondering. You just have to prove you are worth going to the upper floors were are all the answers, alongside the protagonists, by showcasing patience and curiosity if not shinsoo manipulation skills ^^
As someone who read the webtoon fully and seen the anime, the only problem really is the pacing for how they adapted 80+ chapters for 16 episodes. They did amazing with it but some small details that will make a big impact in the story later were missed out on. Most everyone’s right though from the readers perspective we’re learning about the tower and all the properties with bam in season 1. We don’t get much info but the little bits and pieces stick because we can understand their importance like with yuri’s sword the black march. If you’d like to give it a read it will definitely suck you in with lore and world building that’s honestly top tier in all of manga and characters that have meaningful backstories that don’t just last a chapter and are forgotten about. Everyone and everything plays a specific roll in the story and cross references even hundreds of chapters later.
Season 2 goes full shonen in the webtoon. I did enjoy in a sort of brain-dead way. But I believe they will make it a bit deeper inthe anime because of the reputation of season 1
i don't know what will this s2 anime cover but im just gonna tell you starting from the hell train arc until the end of s2 on webtoon is just straight up peak fiction. but yeah i think well get it after another 2 season 😭😭😭😭

The rules don’t get more understandable. I’m caught up in the webtoon and the rules and instructions for the tests just get more and more complicated. But you start to understand once you see the characters acting the rules out, especially when Khun makes his analysis about the game we start to understand bit by bit.
honestly, i don’t think khun is like killua besides him being good at killing people but in the tower, everyone’s good at killing, khun ran reminds me a lot more of killua with a hint of luck from BC since he uses lightning and likes to fight
