Hinges... How hard can it be? Pro Touring V8 Triumph Build - LS Powered Project GT6R - Ep28

- Well it’s been a bigger job than we ever imagined, but at long last the hood is hinged again! And you can’t even see them! … wait … what? …
We set out last time to redesign the ugly factory hinges using parts from a BMW E60 5-Series, and although they seemed promising, on further investigation, they won’t push the hood far enough forward to clear the bumper… which remains stationary.
So, we spent the opposite of a "short while" researching and modelling different designs until we were blue in the face…
Let’s see what we came up with!
Like you, we can't wait to hear the LS fire up someday, so I hope you'll Subscribe and hit the notification bell so you won't miss that experience with us!

We’re just a couple of guys (not trained mechanics) who enjoy problem solving, creating new things, and showing you how we did it. We can’t promise that anything we do will work for your project, or that you, someone else, or your warranty will not be harmed or affected by doing it too. Please work responsibly and do not mess around with machinery that you are not comfortable with, even if we made it look easy!
Thanks for waiting everyone, I thought this episode just might be worth it! 😊
It's always worth it!
lol i just checked the channel a little over an hour ago to see if there was an update i had missed
Have you thought about a safety mechanism to spare the hinges and struts in case the wind takes hold of the hood?
Anyway, love the build. Keep up the good work.
Always pumped up when I see a new video posted.
Totally envious of the relationship you two share. You sir are blessed.
Epic! Been waiting for this. Hope you’re all well?
If the original GT6s were all built to this level of integrity, they would all still exist and be roadworthy! 💪👍🇬🇧
With that hood you guys have just reached Binky-level epicness!
Yes Nick and Richard will be jealous with the Bracket work. Keep up the good work and let a couple of Canuck upstarts show up the Brit team.
Totally!!!
Yes both parties are world class when it comes to brackets! - Along with Matt at Urchfab we could arrange “Bracket World Championships” !! 😊😎👍
@@philtucker1224 I forgot about Matt, I'm gonna go check out what he's up to
Just found this build. Where have I been? Now I have to pause and go back and watch 27 episodes in a row! Great build!
Welcome! It can be a bit rocky if you're going back to the very beginning FYI! 😂 This has been an ongoing project for a while now!
New episode! Day made!
Found my self clapping at the end, great job guys
Excellent workmanship !
You definitely got the funk out on this one. Quality fabrication.
Cheers Mark 🥳
Really cool,a friend had 1 of these in H.S. This thing will be a beast! I had a 1800E Volvo I wanted to put a V8 in
Still my favorite build on RUclips. Great job guys.
Means a ton Dan, really does! 😊
I can't say it's my absolute favorite but it's equal to all the ones at the top.
And there are tons of absolute genius builds here on RUclips.
And then to think he's doing this in a spare time in a tiny cramped garage.
Pretty dang impressive.
There really are a ton of amazing projects on here so I'm honoured to even make a top 10! 😄
@@FanatikBuilds that would be cool if all you RUclips car builders got together and held a competition. Of course you'd probably get beat out by some trillion dollar thousand man operation. As far as real world goes this one easily makes the top 10. And those top 10 could be put in any order.
watch offroad hub,,never welded or anything before in his life..fj crusier.
Now THAT's what I'm talking about! That was an outstanding effort on those hood hinges. You guys should most assuredly be proud of yourselves!
Thanks Eric, we're quite pleased! 😊
One of the BEST narrated and edited videos on RUclips, consistently witty and well thought out.
Thanks Thomas, glad you enjoyed it 😊
I bet Jay Leno, if he knows about this build, is just sitting there watching these, drooling at the thought of seeing it in person and interviewing both of you when it’s done.
Haha, meeting Jay would be a dream! Hopefully someday ... if we ever cross the continent! 😊
Wow. Great filming and editing.
Great work guys. I love the common sense going into this project.
Cheers Jeff, giving it our best shot anyway! 🥳
BOM level fab work !
Two things stuck out to me on this video. The first was high production quality and the second was the joy you and your dad showed when you accomplished a long sought after goal. Well done! Thank you so much for sharing it with everyone! (Honestly that hood is rad!)
Thanks Charlie, glad you enjoyed our efforts 😊👊
Awesome! I had so many channels I follow pop up with new videos today, but I don't have time to watch them all, so I watched this one first! lol
Thanks Jay, always appreciate hearing from you man! 👊👊
Great to see progress and Dad’s looking healthy ….Congratulations
Superb, keep up the good work.
Your best episode since working out how to mount the starter - excellent problem solving and a really elegant solution. Glad to see your Dad looking so well 👍
Oh - and Binky-level bracket design and building! 😃
Appreciate it man! 😊🙏
just double checked yesterday to see if I had missed a video, glad to see a new one today!
MCM In the bin looks great guys
IN THE BIN
Some quality shenanigans at that. Hinges and no twinges! Winner.
After watching this solution I think it might be time for another Oscar. I ant get much better than this and your solution is certainly no worse than anything any factory has ever done. All the bends in the support under the hood, especially where the meet at the 90 degree points are a pleasure to enjoy.
Means a lot Craig, thanks 😊
What a master class of problem solving ancient engineering problems and applying modern solutions with a great deal of C.A.D. design. I’m just totally impressed. Great job, gentlemen!
Cheers Gordon 😊🥳 glad you like it!
WOW -- it sure wasn’t easy but it will forever be so satisfying every time you peek inside to see the monster beneath 👍👍😎👍👍
Turning from a nice little care into a really nice little car!!
I hate to use the term over-engineered, but this thing is really turning out to be so well-built that it seems to be the only term that applies. The attention to detail is astounding. I can't wait to see the finished product. If you're anything like I was when I built my Sunbeam, you go to bed at night with dreams of you driving the finished car... for me it was down the Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach with Led Zeppelin blaring.
Haha, I know what you mean about that term, but thanks man, it's appreciated! 😊 I really do look forward to driving this thing, but I love the build too, and it's usually dreaming of how to build the next part - I build in my head, then in person! Get that from dad 😎😂
I really enjoy your posts, it's refreshing to watch someone learn new skills and experiences while not being negative about setbacks. Keep them coming the humor while sorting out problems keeps me thoroughly entertained.
Cheers James, will try to!
I absolutely love the precision of putting 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag and having it work better than original!!!! im in love with this car.
Second favorite build after Binky. Great work!
Awesome, was just about to finish work too - I’m going to crack a beer, sit outside and watch this. Cheers! 🍻
Perfect! Hope you enjoyed our progress Baron, have a good weekend ahead! ✌️👊
@@FanatikBuilds great job. Your Dad is looking well too, all the best to you both!
Thanks man, and for you as well!
You are developing some mad "binky" skills with those sheet metal brackets. I like it!
Your satisfaction at this point - with all of the thinking and sweating and grinding, welding . . . it's so nice to see. Love the build!
Wondered where you have been ...Now I know ... 😆
I watch a lot of You Tube build channels (to much says my wife) this has to be the best! My young son is thinking of becoming a mechanical engineer but does not want to get away from car building. I am getting him to watch you guys and see that you can combine the two trades with ease. Keep up the good work!!!
I thought the same as a kid so studied automotive engineering, quickly realised the engineering is the satisfaction and the product is far less important. All the best to your lad.
Engineering is the best career I can think of for a young person who has the drive to complete the education. It pays well, has about the best job security of any career in society and opens up so many possibilities for a rewarding and stimulating career.
I think Blackhurst would rate your bracketry awesome
I give you lots of credit for fabricating parts using the most basic tools. Love where you’re headed with this.
Thanks man, keeps things interesting! 😂
It is so nice to see you both back in the garage and working on that cool little car!
Pete
Thanks Pete, it's good to see some big progress!
Good to see that ”Dad” is back and he looks great. We await your solutions and progress.
Glad to see another video from you guys!
Saturday video sesion is saved!
Cheers from Norway 🙂
Cheers bro! Hope you're well!
I was starting to get itchy ! So good to see you both ! You never have a problem , only a solution . Your father is looking very well indeed , l know he wasn't so good last year (or maybe even longer past ) . Absolutely love your work , as l've said in the past , you would shame many so called professional shops. ....."To infinity and beyond !"
Could not agree more!
Most folks that have never needed to design hinges will not understand the complexity!...... Tip: when you install gas struts, design and position the mounts so that they are "over center" holding the hood down until you pull it up a couple of inches
Oh gosh the time we spent designing new ones just to use the old ones was ridiculous! 😂 Fun learning curve but what a waste of time! Actually we wanted to prevent the struts from going over-center, as this way they help lift the hood immediately. Some additional catches we are planning to implement later, require just a few pounds of weight on them for them to release properly, so keeping initial lift effort low was important! More in time ✌️
Very nice functioning flip front. Great work again.
Hey thanks buddy! Can't wait to see this in primer one day too, the Alferrari is looking GREAT! 🥳✌️
Some bracketing there that even the most ardent Binky fan would be proud of , great stuff !😃
Another awesome and detailed episode! I had to pause to take notes for my own build!
Haha, thanks man, glad you enjoyed our progress! 🥳
Have you thought about limiting cables? 1/8 cable connecting the strut mounts to limit how far it opens. Your hood struts are bang on. Progress looks awesome
Yes! That was actually discussed in some footage that got cut ... it would work very well to eliminate all the stress on the struts (and have meant we could have used the first struts) but we decided to buy the new, shorter ones, because it was less messy. They are also just a hair stronger too, so when the hood is painted, it will still be capable of lifting with only a few pounds of manual force! ✌️ Thanks man! 🎉
I was thinking leather for flexibility, but cable would do fine
Love the content fellas. I'm a current tech at a dealership. Everything you have done here is awesome, but one thing. If you use the struts to limit the travel like that, they will fail quickly. The plastic ends will break and/or the strut will leak its fluid out and stop working. I've replaced literally hundreds of these on different makes/models of SUV's, and those are on liftgates that have their own stoppers. Granted the liftgates are likely much heavier than your hood though.
What I am saying is, stick a washer under the front of those hinges, and maybe use some kinda rubber bumpstop between the hinge and the frame to limit the hood travel.
Or not, you guys have designed and built way more cool stuff on this this car than I ever have, so you likely know better than me lol. Can't wait for the next episode. Your dad looks like he is doing good. Glad to see it.
The hood actually balances at fully open (65 degrees) ... so the struts aren't under any load at all. BUT... a gust of wind from behind the car will easily change that ... so some straps are a very good idea. 28:21 shows some temporary shims under the hinges, a better solution will come when we replace the wooden blocks!
I stumbled across this build less than a week ago while trying to scratch my Project Binky itch (why the RUclips algorithm didn’t find you for me I will never know). And now I’m up to date. As an MG tragic, I’ve always considered the GT6 to be simply the prettiest little (and I do mean ‘little’) sports car ever and what you are doing is awesome!
You never cease to amaze me. Thankfully, your Dad is looking pretty good, so glad to see that. I get so excited when your videos pop up, it's always the first thing I watch. The last car I rebuilt almost had me giving up, I had to focus on just the one step I was working on and not get overwhelmed with the big picture. Nothing I've ever done comes even close to what you two have done. It is simply amazing what you and your Dad have engineered so far. Thank you for such top notch entertainment. Sharing this video as usual with my friends.
Always good to hear from you Jim, thanks for the kind words and sharing with your friends, every bit helps! 😊🙏
I love your Chanel. Waitung for further updates.
Greetings from Germany
Thanks for watching, all the best from Canada! 🇨🇦
Looking good
Very enjoyable. I really enjoy seeing repurposed, low cost manufacturer components integrated with TLC in ways that the original designer was probably not expecting. Pleased that your Dad is up and running on all cylinders.
Thanks Andrew 😊 appreciate you keeping him in your thoughts!
Awesome work you crazy Canadians, love it and now a peace and calm has come over me until the next episode is due! Don't stop now, we are so close!
An episode well worth the wait and great to see your Dad looking so well. With bracketry to rival Bad Obsession all is looking fantastic. The next episode can't come quick enough.
Thanks Gary 😊🙏
Great to get that problem licked. Hinges and gas strut pivot points are baffling to figure out. Thanks
I never thought that I would be so happy to see a hood open and close.
I know right 😂
Remarkable fab work. Love your project. Keep up the good work and will love to see the end result. Cheers!
Cheers Vincent, glad you're enjoying our shenanigans! 😊
Nice engineering guys! Respect!
Cheers Robin 🥳✌️
Fellas, really stoked to see the attention to detail and the fact that you put the time in to make that hood perfect.
Thanks man, we're glad it was worth the effort! 🥳
Your project and can do attitude is inspiring.
As usual a credit to you and your dad! Looks great ! May be two safety hood wires !!just a thought😊
A great episode & update - well done fellas. Good to see the nose back on the old girl. Extra thumbs up for whatever your music to grind to was. More of all this please!
Thanks Adam, glad you enjoyed it on all fronts! Hopefully a shorter wait for the next installment 🤞🙏
Hey man, I’m glad to see your Dad up and going
Wow....well done! I forsee a LOT of jealous GT6 and Spitfire owners!
Excellent work.
Excellent! Beauty in motion.
awesome progress!
Looks so good with the bonnet sticking up and no frame extenders. Just bolt some leather limiting straps on the hinges
It sure looks a lot nicer! Thought about limiting straps, but decided against them to keep things tidy... if the struts wear out too quickly, we can always add some then!
I was wondering what was going on.
You’re going to remember this build for the rest of your life.
My father was an amazing mechanic and welder.
The color should remain GREEN. Beautiful 😻
The time with Dad has always been the main reason for the project! We are looking forward to driving it one day though 😂
I was getting concerned at your absence. I look forward to every new episode. Great Job!!
Just got caught up. Watched the entire series this week. I am extremely sad I don't have more to watch on this project right now!
The early episodes can be a bit hard to watch at times so good on ya for making it through! 😅👏 Hope you’ll enjoy what’s yet to come man, cheers! ✌️
I have watch this and many other episodes multiple times, the vision and skill is impressive. Don’t know how many grinding and flat discs you have gone through, but they have been sacrificed for a good cause. Ten years is a long build, but most people would not get this far. Great job!
Thank you Daniel! 🙏💪✌️
Beautiful work! It's going to be so great when it's done.
Cheers Robert, we certainly hope so! 🥳✌️
I live for this..
Cheers my dude! 🎉🥳
Epic, and how great to be able to do this with your dad!
Great engineering use of Lego Technic! Glad to see you back with a new video.
Always gotta find a use for LEGO. Don't grow up, it's a TRAP!
@@FanatikBuilds agreed
You guys are impressive!!
Cheers Lance, good to hear from you! 🥳
This is going to be without any doubt the best engineered GT6 ever and I love it. 🤘👍
😊 Thanks buddy, sure hope it'll be at least better than it was or this was a real waste of time 😂
@@FanatikBuilds - It is the journey that often matters the most, not the destination. With the time spent working with your dad it already will provide you a lifetime of memories. Continued good luck.
So great. Worth the wait! All hail the algorithm!
A see a noticeable improvement in your production quality and I really like your choice of accompanying music, all in all you are really making progress in all areas
Such a cool project to be working on with your father. Great job on the hood hinges and gas strut fabrication!
Thanks Mark 😊🥳
Another great improvement. The endless days of popsicle headaches are totally worth it when you get the result you are looking for. Endlessly impressive. Thanks
Thanks Paul! 🙏
Fantastic! Your joy at those hinges finally working is really infectious, as is your enthusiasm.
Well done - Nice Job!
Thanks Jonathan!
Hey guys, I'm happy to see you back. I am also very happy to see your creation, this car is absolutely my favorite build.
Thanks man, glad you like it 😊
The engineers at Triumph should be taking notes! The feeling one gets by opening the stock configured hood was that those guys ran out of time on the build. You certainly took it to modern day standards!!! And btw your workmanship is second to none!! That rivet loose in the frame rail would keep me up at night until I fished it out with a flex magnet. 😉😁
Haha, I still have nightmares about it 😂
Great job , Those hinges are things of beauty !
This episode has some special mojo. + Dad looking like a warrior ❤
Cheers, I'm so glad we managed to pull this off! Crazy to think it's been over three years now since dad's stroke (Sept 2021) ... wouldn't want to live through that again! 🙏
Absolute brilliant engineering on your design. You deserve to be proud of yourselves!!! You guys are better than some so called professionals. Hurry up and get this car finished. I want to get a ride in it!!! Can’t wait....!
Really appreciate it 😊 we can't wait to go for a ride either!
Great episode, keep them coming. Dad looks in good health. Missed your lazy twin brother.
Good aproach guys, proud of you....
Thanks Darian 😊 means a lot!
nice. you could soften the end stop motion of the hood with a wire strap at the hinge to limit the hood opening arc. the wire straps taking the stop force rather than the gas struts. my own experience with these struts are that the plastic end connectors of the struts fail over time if the hood is opened too aggressively, such as in a wind.
Absolutely. Those struts are NOT designed to be anywhere near their travel limits. You need to build stops both for open and closed positions and make sure the strut is NOT at it's limits.
It could also be limiting straps such as are used in keeping rear differentials from exceeding their range. Volvo, Saab? Memories……sigh.
Watch out bad obsession! What a job guys. Awesome 👍👍
😊 cheers Andy!
Fantastic fanatic!
Nice use of CAD design 👍👍
People who watch Discovery car shows have no idea how long custom actually takes. What you're doing is great work and pretty sure Nick Blackhurst would be proud if he had made it 👍 I'm sure you've checked but fingers crossed the bumper doesn't cause any issues 😊
Thanks man 😊 Yes, the bumper will be featured in a future episode but we have fiddled with it long enough to know it can stay behind... PERFECT! 👌👌
Always happy to see an update on this build. I had a Triumph Spitfire as my second car and I spent a lot of time working on it in my 20s - from an engine re-build to painting it ..... forced me to gain a lot of mechancal skills. Fun fact - it was the only engine rebuild kit I have seen that came with a block of wood used to seal oil leaks by the oil pan. You hammered that into place in a machined groove left in the block then shaved it down to be flush. One of many odd features as I am sure you have also run across throughout this car.
But, as with many British cars of then era it wasn't depenable. Especially the electrical system. I decided if I was going to put hundreds or thousands of hours into a car it should be worth something when finished so I sold it and switched to Jaguar XKEs as the big brother to this with its front hinged bonnet. Great feature by the way as it allows you to sit on the wheels when working on it which one will need to do. They can also be unreliable and quirky, but they look fantastic and all have appreciated significantly. I recently added a Lotus Elise to have the best of everything as it uses a dependable Toyota drivetrain in a British car. - love it, but still surreal to have the car start everytime I push the button ;)
You should have it even better wth your GT6R. Reliability and with performance that should be off the charts. Enjoy the process and when you have finished relish the life lessons and memories it will have brought you along the way. Best of luck finishing it up !
I love hearing about little details like a block of wood being considered part of a "rebuild kit" 😂 awesome! Yes the good old "Lucas Prince of Darkness" brought many drivers to the side of the road... we've banished that whole system from our car! Good decision on getting into an E-Type ... I love these little cars but there's no denying the XKE has been a far better investment. 👍 Cheers David, thanks for the motivation and encouragement!
Nice work boys!
Cheers Blair 🥳
Awesome!
