What causes Acne Scars Hyperpigmentation?
Skin conditions that irritate & inflame your skin can cause hyperpigmentation. Inflammation stimulates the pigment producing cells, known as melanocytes. This causes production of melanin which accounts for the dark colour of skin, known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH for short.
How long will it take pigmentation to go away?
This depends on many factors including your ethnicity, sun exposure & degree of inflammation. For lighter skin individuals, brown pigmentation usually takes 3 months to fade. For ethnic skin, pigmentation can last up to five years. PIH acne scarring is mostly due to mild to moderate acne & not due to cystic acne.

PIH can be effectively treated with PICO lasers. Only 2-3 sessions required.
What are the best treatments for pigmentation?
Treating pigmentation involves, prevention, protection & correction.
Prevention: essential step as this breaks the cycle. This applies to all cases of pigmentation including acne.
Protection: involves sunscreen selection & proper use.
Correction: involves the application of a lasers &/or a peel program coupled with precision skin care. For brown hyperpigmentation my go to lasers are nano over pico. Why? Nano lasers are far safer than pico lasers, additionally they provide a cost effective solution for the patient. Laser work by decreasing melanin (pigment) production in addition to removing excess pigmentation in the dermal layers. Chemical peels work by chemically exfoliating excess colour in the epidermis, or top layer of skin.
Precise, effective skin care forms the cornerstone of hyperpigmentation treatments. I formulate a program consisting of a combination of retinol, retinoic acid, pigment correctors, botanicals & skin acids, depending on the type of pigmentation & patient factors including skin sensitivities.

I’m 48 and have been using Tretinoin I started it in oct 2023 for dark spots due to sun damage. I use Tranexamic acid, Arbutin, licorice root, kojic acid, niacinamide, vit c serum. My question is what laser would help my sun spots please? I was told I can’t get laser hair removal as I use Tretinoin and it would darken my spots. Tretinoin has brought out more dark spots and freckles. What is ur opinion? I live in Brisbane.
What about one dark patch on the cheek, with no cause (not sun exposure, not acne, no major change in hormones)? Thanks!

Love your videos. My skin couldn't handle plain HQ and compound HQ. Its getting better with compound Azelaic acid with kojic acid and niacinamide. Do you recommend microneedling in my given situation?
Lived experience here…pigmentation on brown skin does not do well with laser… I’ve tried pico and so has my friend… it worsened it…
My issue is discoloration on the chest from sun damage. What home treatment is best for that?

what about solid state / vascular lasers? i got both advatx and vbeam (more for bruising) and found the former gave a great immediate result
I gave myself an ice burn from ice pack directly on my leg. There's no scar tissue, skin has exactly same texture, it's only discoloured (I'm white, and it has a colour of coffee with milk) and it's the size of my palm. It's bizarre, there was no scarring, as soon as it healed it was discoloured and I never tanned, it's been a year and it didn't changeIs this a type of PIH? And can laser get rid of it? I'd be worried laser gives you a kind of burn, which is what caused my hyperpigmentation in the first place - so will laser not cause more of it? Coincidentally, I do get brownish spots of colour on my arms, face etc. once my acne spots heal, and they don't disappear. It's so frustrating as my skin is sensitive and easily breaks.
