I Ran a 5k WITH Training!

- My first 5k and I trained for it. Shocking, I know. My first thumbnail had 3 shock faces on it but my wife wisely told me to cut a couple of them out.
I wore a headcam, inspired by a fellow Andy- @TheFODRunner
This is a reaction video - inside the mind of a guy running his first 5k at the ripe age of 44. Note: I have run 5 or 6 half marathons and marathons. I have also run 5000m time trials at the track, but never an actual 5k.
That changes now as I have brought on a coach, Matt Fox of @sweatelite6526. I trained around 10 weeks. There is another 5k in three weeks and a 10k on August 3rd. I am training ultimately for the Marine Corp Marathon at the end of October.
I cover my workouts with members and also do early release and exclusive content. If you want to support the channel, you can join here....

The trees look beautiful. It’s like we’ve been treated to a botany trip. 😜✌🏼
☠️
The timer had me 😂, I was like where...??? Then the jkjk I movie... came about. Great work AP.
I mean well! lol
Wow. Look at all those green trees 😮. 😆😆. The intention is what counts 👍🏼. Take you for bringing us along.
5K's are generally a bit more relaxed and fun.., except for the front runners (but you are different).., great video.
While I don't fully understand how your random train-of-thought video narration held my interest for a full 20 minutes, I enjoyed that it did. Nice job! Thank you!
haha, thanks. I have a hard time clicking on any video over 15 minutes - so I appreciate you even giving it a chance
🔥🔥 speedy!!
Running a 5k marathon with training! Amazed that you didn't pre run the course to get used to it.
Yeah I at least should’ve gotten there a couple hours earlier and jogged it to see what I was getting into. Definitely the next one
🔥🔥 speedy
That's how I feel after my 5k's... Great race recap video except for the video part. 🤪😋👍👍😁 Matt Fox is awesome! Love his Sweat Elite videos also 😁
😂 yeah I’ll have to work on that part . The filming . Unless I can get my 6th grader to follow me on his bike
Dude the thumbnail is hilarious
Thank you. I had a 3 shock face one up for a while but it was a little too much. Thumbnails might be my favorite part of RUclips
This was a nice scenic tour. iFit should be calling you any day for a new running series on the treadmill 😂
😂 iFit sponsorship - I’ll take it!
Run for the Alamo...Beer! in August is a solid race if you're looking to do another local fun run 5k. Scallywompus runs the event. Starts and ends in Lady Bird.
I’m signed up! I’m doing the 10k August 3rd - I think it’s the sxallwompus. I’ve done one of their races before , a HM in “hill”otes-I’m signed up for the next eDragon 5k June 30 and scally 10k. Are you going to run it
@@MidLifeRunner Won't be running eDragon, but planning to run August 3 and sounds like 10k is the race to go with now!
@@MrJoeolive let’s goooooo
Leaving us hanging at the end lol
I’m not sure it was ever funny but if I do it too much it’s not funny at all 😂
That course seems really nice. First is really there to see what it is about. Now you know what to do and how to pace the next one. I think you'll shave a minute for sure on the next. Nick Bester has some great 5k race recap tactics videos.
Awesome! He seems like a very excitable guy. I will have to check it out
Welcome to ParkRun 😂
🙌🏼 I loved it
It's funny. It just occurred to me that I have never run any actual 5km races before. Got into running and have only really ever run half marathons or full marathons. I have no real idea of what I could run an all out 5km at. Great video as always
This was #1 - That's the next "unlock" Matt! The need for speed. And hey, if a song goes on repeat, you're only listening to it a handful of times!
@@MidLifeRunner amazing!!! Seems like I'm always marathon training. I love it, but feels like if I had another faster gear I would be stronger overall
Awesome race! I live in Austin, and it is, indeed, hot!
Time to embrace it! Hills and humidity. that's what we have to offer
@@MidLifeRunner It's better than Dallas...we don't have any hills to offer, just....dampness
I thought 5K is 5000 meters….. 😂 maybe I have been wrong all these time. Anyway congrats on the first 5k win. Go for a parkrun on Saturday if there is one near where you live .
This is the closest thing to parkrun we have here. I wish they did it every weekend . It was fun
Nice effort, 5ks are hard!
Would a chest rig work? I cant imagine having that camera on my head. Good work andrew...some good weather i can only imagine the speed
I’m not sure . I think I’ll just use my selfie stick ala kofuzi . I bet I can keep it steady at that pace … I bet
Take it easy my friend remember you are midlife you want to get healthy to the marathon. Consistency is better than give it all on trainning. Good videos
Sometimes I forget the midlife part 😂
Andrew in his best Doc Holliday voice, "I'm in my prime"
Good time on a messy course...ain't no one PRing on that one.
Thanks. Aiming for 6:00 the first couple of miles on the next one and empty it out after that. Just heard a guy say if you’re in 10k PB shape, you’re in marathon PR shape. I’ll do the next 5 k without the head deal.
Now that you have the course recorded, you can set a Garmin PacePro if you race this course next time that way you would know where you would push and where you can take it easier (hills) You can set up as many segments (or per km/mile basis) and decide how aggressive you want to be in hills. Play with it, it is a good tool.
I’ll have to look into pace pro. I have not heard of it. This sounds fascinating
Hahaha If I tried taking footage while running it would definitely look like the beginning of the video. Those small 5k's can be a little hard to pace for a race, especially if you're not super familiar with the course and there aren't at least a couple other runners at or around your goal pace.
Yeah, the next one should be sharper all around .
It’s giving Bo Burnham making fun of reaction videos 😂
Welcome to internet
From the get go you were F….!!! High humidity, no competition and winding course. Definitely 18:30 with better conditions
love the optimism, James! We will get it on the next one!
Do you have any parkruns nearby?
They are great to practice the 5k on, free with timing 😊
No Parkruns near where I live. I think this is the closest thing to it. 20 dollars so that’s about as cheap as it gets . I really enjoyed it and wish we had parkrun here
@@MidLifeRunner yes they are fun ☺️
Great to see some more 5k workouts and races from you, i’m trying to improve my shorter distance aswell right now.
Looks like a typical park run.
So that’s what they’re all about then. Wish they were more common in the states
@@MidLifeRunner Park runs are growing in popularity. For now, I have to drive an hour to get to the closest one to me.
Firstly I like the title. Aren't us RUclipsrs meant to do things "WITHOUT" training :) More seriously I find it hard to "film" 5Ks as if am properly going for it don't have the "puff" to get the GoPro out. Never really fancied a head camera. My recent 5Ks have been quite similar. Around 6:00 start then little discrete slowing. Still always good to win a race. Yeah sure you could go faster with some competition and 5Ks I ran you need to race fairly often to get used to them.
Cheers to that. It was fun. I can see myself running them a lot more frequently. I was going to GoPro a training run today but forgot the SIM card. I’m glad I did. It’s much more freeing to run without it. I’m on the fence for the sub 3 attempt in late October but leaning toward no GoPro just like the last attempt
@@MidLifeRunner As you may have seen I did 2:59:52 in my last marathon last year. I filmed a bit on my GoPro before I crossed the actual line and then put it in my back pocket thinking would get it out on the way. As it was I had to "focus" so much that I never had the energy to get it out and glad I didn't as sure even once would have a cost me the sub 3. As such did not want any "what ifs" in that regard. As it was the video did "OK" anyway and perhaps more realistic that I was there to race first and foremost. Generally I think it depends on your target and how close to it you might be.
Well done! I’d say if you had done a legit 5k on better terrain and a loop (out and backs, ugh!), you’re easily a sub 17. Easy.
Putting this one in my pocket for a rainy day! Hopefully not also on race day
Idea alert. Head up to Austin and do do a collabo with Nick Bare. BPN sponsorship and Nick paces you to a 5 minute mile!
😂 he’s big leagues . I’m AA baseball
@@MidLifeRunner At least you're playing the same sport. I heard that 5 minute per mile pace, the rest of us are out here playing t-ball by comparison.
Great work out there, appreciated the tree view as well - too often neglected by most runtubbers! Would recommend "crown my run" channel for some top notch headcam running content, he has watch data overlays and everything.
Just watched a couple of their videos and subscribed ! Thanks for the look out. I might try to run the next one legit to see if I can tackle the distance proper first before I bring a GoPro again 😂
#MexicanGreetings! I for one would advise everyone to run a 5k without looking at your watch. Remove the spots and helps and shit and just go for it! You will be surprised 😊
Next one is blindfolded! haha
@@MidLifeRunner You would definitely get more views by doing that 😆
What shoes did you run in?!
Great question! I Ran in the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 2. For the next 5k I will take the Metaspeed Edge Paris to compare but I love both of those shoes
look at that face
I made a thumbnail with three shock faces to really overdue it but my wife was like "you can't post that. People don't know you"
I'm quite fascinated by your running journey but this was hard to watch. I can totally understand having not so great video from the race since it was your first time recording like that. But the way you talk about it in the post race commentary is just... IDK. You sound bored and like whatever about it. Why post it if you don't even seem interested in it?
I really appreciate honest feedback. Thank you. Running means a lot to me and I’ve been super excited to run 5ks and a 10k this summer. Perhaps I was unconsciously disappointed and it came through in my tone or I have not had enough time to really process it. Either way, it must’ve come across like that - even though I am very satisfied with the results and happy to have done it. Thank you for building some mindfulness . 🙏🏼
Congrats on losing your 5K virginity🎉 MYCOACH assigned me a 5K TT which I refuse to do on the TM, or on the local track (here at 7900 ft) but decided to instead do a more fun 5K in Basalt, which is part of the Aspen Valley Marathon and HM weekend. Basalt is hilly too but at least it’s a few 100 ft lower and there will be other runners. I started out my running history only doing 5K’s so the reverse of your race history.
