Finally got to review a Bakeneko from CannonKeys but surprisingly, its a 65%. Decided to put the sound test up against a Bak60 as well as a Singa Unikorn just to see how close they landed. Also did a ton of sound tests with various configs with both the silicon and the zinc weight. It packs a big punch for the price point.

It should sound better than the unikorn because of the internal weight
Shout out to the discord peeps for sharing their boards. They both sounded really good. Really good sound tests all around here (my favorite parts of these keyboard reviews!). I think I agree that the zinc plate sounds worse. My personal preference would be with no insert and just the poly fill and the tape.
You could see a visible “oh damn, nice” from that first sound test. Quality video as always lovin em all, can’t wait for more!
honestly really love the zinc weight + tape + polyfill. I bought a white with zinc yesterday since the silicone was out of stock and with those mods it sounds really good. excited to build

Ooh this was good info. I'm still on the fence about picking one up (if I splurge on a Mode65 then I would stop there) but if I did, I was strongly considering the zinc weight. Now I'm fairly sure I would much prefer the silicone, or maybe no weight. I think I prefer a more muted board most of the time, but I had hoped the zinc would achieve a more pleasant resonance than it seems to here.

Wow the amount of time you must have put in to give 69420 sound tests must have been staggering. Thanks for doing that to truly show how wild this board can be in terms of sound! Also I’d love to see what you think of the swift65 or gentleman65 as these are “budget” customs as well too!

I have had mine for about a week and now absolutely love it paired with Drop's Gateron Panda X. It did take me a while to find the right combination of tweaks to get it sounding how I like. I ended up Taped PCB, silicone insert, and foam in the case (I placed a bit of extra foam just at the back edge of case along with one piece on the entire bottom of the case which finally got me to the correct thockiness :)

I’m still gonna hold out for that Zoom65. Right now I’m rockin the GMMK Compact, which I love but, it’s not a true custom. I’ve done everything to make it sound as good as it can get IMO. It’s cool and all, but I wanna to get into something better. I was looking at the KBD Tofu60 and then when the Q2 released I almost copped that but I really didn’t like the thick bezels. Then when you showed the Zoom65, that REALLY caught my eye. Hope they restock soon!

I love my lavender 60, sounds very nice and a little muted. The colour is nice and not flashy, muted as well. But makes the build look so cleannnn!

Great review. Cannon keys O-ring 30a extra for this board is a bit loose. Went with graveshift 0rings. 35a fits and feels better. Tolerances was a little tight for my painted version. My zinc weight is currently sitting on my shelf.

So did you end up getting the bakaneko65? If so how do you feel about it? Been thinking of getting a 65% gasket mount
Wild how much preferences can differ. Though, there are endless combinations out there. I'm running mine with the zinc weight, and really like the sound. I didn't even feel compelled to use any killmat, foam, or polyfil. That said I've got it outfitted with lubed Box Black Inks and they may be doing all the heavy lifting soundwise. I took the zinc weight out, to test, and was not feeling the sound at all, especially the spacebar.
I'm excited to get this one in my hands!

@@badseedtech 60s became my favorite layout once I got the hang of where my layered arrow cluster and home row keys were. I could see how it wouldn't be for everyone though, but I much prefer the 60s aesthetic over the 65
Was thinking about getting this a while ago until I saw it was dye cast or whatever instead of CNC’d alu. I’m really happy I didn’t waste my money on this

Great review! I've had mine for about a week. The silicone weight really surprised me. I was looking for something comfortable and subtle to use for work and this really hit the spot. With Gat blacks this thing is only a little louder than a laptop keyboard. I have a few other sets of switches to try out but so far I am really really enjoying it.
Same thing I’m doing. For work. Did you mod the stabs?
@@davidmay9296 just clipped the legs and lube. Un modded the stabs are pretty mushy but a lot more muted. With a little work they feel great but are a little louder. I'm still really really happy with it either way. As someone who types for 8+ hours a day I couldn't be happier. Vs a top or a tray mount this leaves my fingers feeling a lot less fatigued at the end of the day.

Been looking at the gummy o-ring mounting method lately! Will have to check out the 65 when it comes back in-stock. Those Cannonkey CXA caps look great too, I confused them for MT3 in the thumbnail! Great video and sound tests!

Bakenekos sound so good, jeeze. I feel like the finish will likely get better over time as the manufacturing line matures and they figure out ways to make it cleaner without adding much in terms of overhead, but maybe that's just my youthful, naive optimism showing.
I think in terms of mid tier budget boards that could easily be endgame, the swift65 is the best out atm. You get a damn good package for the price.
Want those GMK caps on the 65's last setup w/ the BadSeed Secret Squirrel switches.

I like the keyboard content you've been putting out recently, but it kinda speaks for the state of the mice market currently. Looks like it's gonna be interesting soon with Pulsar and Endgamegear's new stuff coming up.
Wish they sold the weight or dampener as extras. I got the zinc just because it was different and wanted to try it but I really knew the silicon dampener was the safer bet. I am happy with how my board came out (lilac tactiles lubed/filmed, the 30a o-ring, no fill or tape) and it sounds actually pretty nice but would have loved to have the option to swap out for the dampener if only just to try. Hopefully they put it up for individual sale next run they do. For the moment I prefer my 65 build to my 60 (nk cream lubed, 30a, and tape modded) but that may be just because I tend to like 65s more and it is a newer board.

People say keebs are expensive... then man casually puts a Pantone book in frame. Ha! Something about a burly bearded dude who understands color theory is a perfect fit for this hobby.
I got my Bakeneko65 in white > silicone > tape mod with akko ASA WOB and Boba U4t switches (L/F)....the sound profile is one of the best I have heard in a while and I think ill take this as my endgame for now. I might just swap the caps later with some MT3 BOW to the most out of the tactility

Love the look of the 65% but I am not the biggest fan on the blocker but I think this might be a better build than the Q2.
The only thing that is annoying about this board is that the coating on my whitish version is super streaky on the back. At first, they did not include a disclaimer about this in their QC PDF, but I emailed them and they later changed their PDF. Kinda annoying but at least the waves are on the bottom, no blemishes on the top. I have the silicon version, and I added a very small amount of polyfill and it removed some of that "hollowness" that the board has.
Everybody that ordered it before that change they should still have to honor that I’m pretty sure
Just got cnc neko65 and although feels great with testing out some epsilons def was disappointed with initial flex and sound compared to the 60. The 60 is clean af stock almost. But you def had it sounded good. Hopefully get it sounded good with the epsilons since they are very low as is.
I'd love to see you do a review of the Eng Studios Block-67. It's a Bakeneko based board that supposed to be optimized for acoustics
That sounds very interesting. Increasingly, I’ve become super into acoustics
I think what hurts the 65 the most over the 60 is that the blocker isnt cut out and ring has to flew around. I still prefer my 60 and ordered a h60 pcb for better layouts at hotswap.
this was great hearing all those sound tests back to back to hear the subtle differences making me feel reassures to go with my decision to not get the zinc weight and go for the silicon weight i plan on building this in a few months as i got other keyboard projects im working on but i hope that went it comes time to build this bad boi that i am very pleased with it ( im gonna go with banana splits on this fr4 plate. i wonder if i should buy some polyfill and remove the silicon weight and experience the full character of these banana splits or should i do keep the silicon weight and tape the pcb regardless im happy with my purchase might just cop a second one in a different color or maybe even bakeneko 69 to experience them both. anyway thx for the video and the soundtests!!!
after rewatching i really dont like that metallic resonance of the zinc weight phew bullet dodged and money saved.

Hey, I know this video's older rn, but what black wooden stands do you use for your keyboards, like when you were displaying the Bakeneko60 in the vid? I have some metal ones that sorta do the job, but I worry about scuffs on the board.

Dang....and I thought Brass bottom weights sounded bad. Zinc Geez. I would recommend using stupid fish foam to cut out the hollowness.
