Bruce, that hesalite crystal looks like it has so much more depth than the sapphire. I can't explain in words but it just adds something to the dial.

If Rolex owned the Speedmaster they would have the price in the $10.000.00 plus . The Speedmaster is one of the best watches on the market.

It’s not as good as a Rolex. The finish on the bracelet is very low in comparison to the Rolex I have handled. Sharp corners etc.

    • @jamestheadvisor1650
      @jamestheadvisor1650 3 года назад +1

Well Rolex does use REAL gold for markers and hands. Rolex does make the best bracelet in the business. Also they make their own metal as 904 does feel different and less corrosive. So there is a big difference. With that being said, I just bought a new Omega to go with my Rolex’s. You can like both brands! 🤷🏼‍♂️

My first Speedmaster was the Sapphire. It was nice to see the movement thats for sure...but the more i saw Hesalite models, the more i realised that aesthetically they are superior. There is some vintage charm with having that smooth domed crystal, giving it a warm feel and unparalled beauty dial side.
I ended up selling my Sapphire Sandwich for hesalite sandwich. Best of both worlds, beauty at the front and the back. Now i couldnt be more happier

Bruce; A beautiful presentation, as usual. The Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch has long been a grail watch for me. I love the authenticity of the Hesalite version however, when one is to spend this much on your grail, the Sapphire Sandwich with its exhibition case back and the 1863 movement is extremely tempting. Something to think about as I save up the funds for my own grail watch. Thank you for the "heads up" regarding the upcoming movement upgrade. I personally feel that the $6350 with its $1000 premium is about the most that I would feel comfortable spending. PS; The date of this post just happens to be my birthdate, maybe that's a secret code for me to "pull the trigger" sooner rather than later. It certainly helps my justification to "take the leap" (LOL). Best wishes from one true watch fanatic to another!

100% SS fan (and owner). Came down to durability/scratch resistance and the upgraded movement in display. I have the bracelet for summer and two croc deployant straps (one black and one gray). Looks luxurious on both. The only watch I own that has been recognized and given props (by a guy wearing a gold Yachtmaster).

Iv has my sapphire sandwhich for two years now and I only notice the smoky ring when others on RUclips point it out. You get used to it very quickly and I actually prefer the smaller height and less excessive bubble form from it. I don’t have to worry about scratches and I get to see that beautiful movement in action. The whole argument that the sapphire didn’t go to space is ridiculous because that acrylic they are buying did not go to space either. One or the other is not going to get you “closer” to the original simply because it will never be the original

I did buy my Speedy Pro five years ago. I went for the Hesalite! And to be honest it was pretty clear for me as the Sapphire version was 1500€ more expensive after discounts. So I didn't really think about it any longer. But still, I'm very happy with my past decision. I love the distortion of the Hesalite crystal as well as the beautifully domed shape of it. I also prefer the writings on the closed caseback compared to the Sapphire. The outer metal ring with all the text looks to cluttered for my taste.
I think within the watch community this decision is pretty much a perfect balance =)
Great comparison Bruce, thanks! All the best from Germany, Daniel

Nice review. I’ve owned the sapphire version for years. I was on the fence, but the thinner profile and scratch resistance of the glass made it a better choice as a daily driver. One thing to add to your review might be the cost of ownership. Servicing these watches isn’t cheap. Omega currently charges $850 USD.

  • @supadejsr

Im love the way the dial looks through hesalite, but to the 1863 is the sapphire which more durable and it is reasonable for daily use so for me i would buy the 1863.... if its compare with the 321, then its another topic of choice.

Hesalite looks nicer if I'm honest. It has more charm. One of the greatest watch designs of all. If not the greatest. I would say that and the rolex sub are both so classic in their designs. For me the omega wins , but it's so so close. Most watch collector's love both. I'd be happy to own either of these 2, but I just think the white hands of the omega against the black dial is just a classic and versatile look. The omega looks amazing on a variety of straps, whilst the sub looks better on it's bracelet. But that's just my opinion. Good health Bruce, great vid as always m8.

After Omega release the 3861 Speedies, I rather suspect they will release a low production steel 321 Moonwatch at an even higher price point.
And before anyone points out that we have the Ed White, remember that is a pre-moon Speedmaster. It is still not the same as the twisted lug watch with the built in pusher/crown guard design that actually went to the moon. That is still to come and Omega are making us wait for it.

To better absorb shocks, Omega transitioned to using a Delrin brake (which is a synthetic and not "plastic") for caliber 861/1861 beginning in 1977. Speedmasters acquired by NASA as part of the 1978 Space Shuttle/EVA re-certification quite possibly included this improvement and most likely any Speedy worn in space since that time (either by the U.S., Russian, or other astronauts/cosmonauts) had the Delrin brake. All that being said, the 1863 movement in your Speedmaster looks sublime and well worth showing off +++

Great comparison, Bruce. I've come close to buying a Speedy, but never done so. Maybe now's the time! Personally, I prefer the look of the Hesalite, but do like that exhibition case back! I think the choice is down to practicality - if you wear it as your one watch in all conditions, then go sapphire, it's better. It just saves the hassle of refinishing/replacing the Hesalite (not difficult or expensive, mind) - more peace of mind - its boring to worry about a tool watch! For an occasional/collector's watch, go Hesalite - more authentic, the enthusiast's choice and probably more valuable long term.

I see the moonwatch as a vintage watch which has evolved without beging distorted in its personality. So giving it a sapphire crystal which looks cold compared to the hesalite is sad and a non sense to me. The dome and patina the hesalite gets has so much more charm to it.
If I had chosen the route of modernity with sapphire, nicer movements with high accuracy and see through cadeback, I would probably have gone towards the coax speedmasters.
But loosing the vintage heritage of the moonwatch with that sapphire which seems a bit off with that milky ring, almost like it was not made for it in its esthetic design is a shame for the poor moonwatch in my opinion.
I don't regret my hesalite one single bit of a second, even when I take my polywatch from time to time, leaving some slight traces and scratches on it on purpose. Patina 😉

Easy. to go on vacation to the moon 1861 (heselite) and to live on planet earth 1863 (sapphire sandwich).

Diego M; That's a great way to look at the two models in comparison.

It was my grail watch, studied it a lot, almost bought it, when the prices were real few years ago. I thought of buying sapphire version, but that milky ring is making a dial smaller and there is something in that domed hesalite that makes the dial....
Anyway, the watch aged worse than submariner, all the curves... makes it look old fashioned.

The sun is very timeless. But the omega looks amazing for a 50+ year old design. It’s not really very dated when you have it and use it.

Idiots who are comparing a Rolex here don’t understand smthat omega won’t change this watch.. it’s a classic and will be original forever. I see some losers saying my Rolex has gold markers and hands hahahaha 😂🤣.
