    Just a heads up on VEVOR heaters, many of them are fitted with IEC power connectors (100 - 250v ac) but being used for 12 - 24v dc absolute no no. I have just spent several years testing chinese goods for quality and safety and although now retired just help looking at such things. Enjoyed the vid and found it both useful and enlightening!

      I was shocked, but not at all surprised to see that. It's disappointing that the Chinese manufacturers keep sabotaging themselves with small things on otherwise good products.

    what a brilliant video for someone like me, looking at one of these to permanently install in my workshop ( 20x8 container) been using a propane heater and the bloody thing is just not right (fumes etc ) anyway i was going to buy the all in one units but after seeing this it makes a lot of sense to buy the stand alone type cos then i can run things the way i want etc, i think ill get the Laverna 5kw one .
    thanks again for a superb informative video.

    Just an update: I ordered an HLN 2kW heater from Kevin today and responses were fast and order process was simple. The wifi controller isn’t available yet, still a month out per Kevin, but he offered me a free upgrade once it does become available if it’s not ready by the time my order ships. Top notch customer service. Thanks for the recommendations!

    One small detail to add, I have the 5kW Maxspeedingrods and it's controller does go to sleep with a black screen after a few minutes. I also tested the burn mixture with a CO tester and found it to be perfect, averaging 1-2ppm once at temp. The fan is also double balanced and is very quiet, despite being brushed. It's controller also has audible speech assistant. I'm very impressed with it so far.

    I’ve just bought a Hcalory Bluetooth 5KW standalone that you recommended on FB (not yet installed) for my double garage. I’m now wondering if it’s worth upgrading a lot of the accessories (combustion intake, exhaust, fuel pump, etc etc) to the HLN kit??🤔. Will they be universal sizes? I’m happy to prioritise quality/safety over price for this install.

    No they haven't nor anything is given a CE mark by the EU. The manufacturer claims the product is manufactured in accordance to a standard. Someone from the manufacturer signs a declaration of conformity no one checks they conform. CE marking is a scam.

      You can use a 240v to 12v transformer 20 amps or above if you have electric in the shed or yeah you can use a battery or a smart charger if you have electric in the shed or you can just use a battery and charge it every couple of days if you don't. If you look in the description section under the video you will see a link to our facebook group. If you join there we can send you links as it wont let us post links in the comments section on youtube.

      No of course not, there were just better options to suggest this year. It has been our favourite basic heater for years but the new controller isn't the universal type so not many options for upgrades anymore and that was always a big plus point.

    I've spent weeks trying to decide if a diesel heater was the correct choice for my Bongo Friendee petrol driven, self-converted camper. It's almost the last job, and I've done 95% of the design and actual work myself: not bad for a 69yr old disabled old bag methinks😉 This video told me everything I needed to know and was very unsure about, thank you so much. It's down to the Lavaner Pro 2kw and the HLN Aerolyn 4kw now, but I'm wondering if the HLN, which I think is my prefered choice, would be over-kill? The van living space is only 130cm x 210cm and there's no space beneath the front seats, which is where most people seem to mount them although it could possibly go beneath the R&R bed, by the back door, but then I'd worry about sleeping above it! Having it outside the van would be difficult as I can't bend my back much and I can't kneel down either, so filling the tank would be a huge challenge! I'd be grateful if anyone has any ideas/solutions which could help, thanks 👍😊

    • @vanlifesurvivorsguide
      @vanlifesurvivorsguide  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Lynette, yeah i think the 4kw hln would be over kill but they do a 2kw hln too that would be perfect for a bongo.
      Yeah as long as these is nothing in the way under the van is should be fine, but with a HLN you wouldn't really need to be getting down to it as they are so reliable. Where are you based? We would be happy to take a look for free for you we are based in Bradford

    Another good video.
    The recommended manufacturers are the ones often quoted within EU van and boat circles. The Russian versions are also good, but with less variety, (but in some ways that can be an advantage).
    I will check out the video on controller types, but on my last investigation of the few dozen I have come across, there were several different types, creating well over 20 possible combinations with some connectors failing to match. Some worked when wires were reconnected to the appropriate pins, but in short, the variety of controllers and mother boards was unforgivable. In a few cases the chip used on the board, in identical units, was completely different, so I must simply accept the term 'universal' on face value.
    I have not had problems with the green fuel lines, or even the 'clip on' clamps, but again, in so many areas of these heaters, a bit of standardisation of parts would be the common sense solution. Not much chance there unfortunately.
    Not decrying the fine work by this team at vanlife, the solution would be to control imports to ensure a standard 'high quality gateway' into the UK. So many faults, incompatibilities, and downright rip off adverts would be avoided. It is a shame that such videos need to be made as general engineering principle would demand that parts could be obtained which are always compatible and then fitting instructions could be easily copied and swapped.
    These heaters are crying out for a warehouse controlled import infrastructure, which must of course involve the main players in its creation. Vanlife would be at the front of the queue, obviously.
    Great vid. lots of useful data, and some sense is being made of a snowstorm of parts, incompatibilities, lack of backward compatibility, and vague advertising surrounding these products.
    Some day, hopefully, this jungle will be tamed ?

    Had mine fitted van about 5 years now. Only a Berlingo van but 10 minutes on it's toasty. Fan was rubbing on intake. Found out inside there are three spacer pins. The bottom one a couple of mill. short. So i taped a spacer to put fan concentric with the housing. All good. Just ordered 5kw one £80 for my flat. Mount on cooker hood vent just as it goes outside, tank in cupboard, battery, timed night charger. Could use solar panel?

      Also the exhaust pipe rotted away, so keep eye on exhaust pipe. Also have one of those quiet pumps, not much quieter. Where heater needs to catch up is the silencer, not very good, as said at full blast like jet engine and the sound carries. Some experimenting needed there..

I mean thermostat that will actually turn the heater off after reaching the temp, and turn it back on when the temperature drops? Or is the only option really just external thermostats soldered to the controler?

So have a few exhaust silencers so put one on the air intake, what a difference. Stopped the intake roar. Have a box silencer for outlet, definitely better than the tin plate one. The controller just has a 6 step temp. controller. Better as you can change at will from remote.

    I appreciate your buyer's guide.
    I bought a Chinese heater and after installing it, it worked for 2 hours before it thew a high temp sensor code.
    Reminded the first didn't work, I expected is that a replacement wouldn't either.
    So, I ordered three new sensors from three different manufacturers.
    I also ordered a rebuild kit.
    It's still 15 days out.
    When the first high temp sensor arrived, I installed it, only to have the unit throw two new codes:
    Underpower and overpower.
    Yet another reminder that it's Chinese.
    I've ordered a new motherboard and controller... 20 days out.
    If it doesn't work, there will be a sledgehammer party at Peter's house.
    I expect I'll be buying either an
    Hcaloric or something a bit more expensive.
    Thanks again for the buyer's guide.
    I'm polishing-up my sledgehammer...

    I have two 5 kw unbranded units to heat my insulated garage. I have nat gas overhead heater. But don't like using it. Too noisy burns too much nat gas. No shut off for flue. So when it shuts off all the heat goes up the flue. I have a piece of cardboard with magnets I stick in to seal the flue. Then use my diesel heaters to heat garage. I installed an hcalory engine preheater in my pickup to preheat engine when it gets minus 40. It's on its second year and still working good. So impressed I just bought another for my other pickup. But new one I got comes with different remote and in car control module. Wish they would have stuck with the old controller. But the one I bought last year still works good. Hope the new controller and remote works as good as the older ones

      For my garage I have one that is all in one. The other the heater uses a remote fuel tank. Not sure I like the all in one unit. The tank sits right above the burner. If tank cracks or leaks it would drip fuel in burner. Only takes one to heat garage to working temp. I fire both up to heat garage faster. Then shut off the all in one. Did mods to my main one to make burn chamber last longer.

    Nothing wrong with that green fuel line just the installation

    • @vanlifesurvivorsguide
      @vanlifesurvivorsguide  6 месяцев назад

      Its bad mate, not only is it not fuel grade, can kink, split, degrade, cause air bubbles etc it also means that the pump has to push and pull twice the amount of fuel than it does with the correct diameter fuel line wearing the pumps out quicker too. If you use any other fuel line thicker than 2mm inner diameter or the wrong type with Webasto and eberspacher and your pumps fail they void your warranty down to user error.

    • @rolandsmith2141
      @rolandsmith2141 6 месяцев назад

      @@vanlifesurvivorsguide ive had my set up running with that fuel line for 2 years, i respect your vast knowledge on these things but these are my findings for diesil not petrol, it will only kink if your installation is poor, the ristriction through this feul line is minimal compared to the solid stuff so its not pushing hard at all(im a heating engineer, hydrolics and flow is something i know about) + you need to put a connection piece at every joint inc the filter!!.
      Id like to know how old the line (or what you put through it for it to degrade or split, air in the line dose'nt seem to matter as the pumps as its never running dry.
      Ive just stripped my heater down to see how see looks inside and i cant believe how little soot there was. None in the burn chamber and just a small amount on the heat exchanger walls. I use this in my workshop so its on all winter set on 1. Very impresive. Only run mine on kerro/diesil.
