These, species habitat in open bush, sugarcane fields, open woodlands, tall grassy areas, edges of cultivation, alongside bodies of water.
This finch usually stay in large group, to protect themselves by the predation, especially during the non breeding season.
During the non breeding season, brightly coloured males lose their plumage and become brown, much like the females, this brown plumage may serve as comuflage during the dry season.
