Wow, excellent job with the the dolly zoom effect in the beginning ;) I think it's cool also! You raise a ton of good points and your samples illustrated everything to back it up. Fantastic review Amy! It came up in my feed and you grabbed my attention at the start for sure. All the best, Jay
2:30 Yes you can get a blurry background with F4 too, but the subject has to be really close and/or the background really far away (just like in your examples there). Shoot inside and it'll be a lot trickier.
Dear Amy, thank you for your time, to talk about this lens. For me in particular , unless is a portrait photo, i think the background should not be too defocus, in the samples you show, the f4 looks more integrated…. 👌
Take 2 lenses for comparison: Sony FE 24-70 GM 2.8 and Sony FE 24-105 G 4. We set the first one to 75 mm with 2.8, and the second at 105 mm with 4.0. You will see similar bokeh and depth....
I'm still learning but what I have learned is I hate carrying heavy camera gear and it was the 20mm1.8 that made me realize that. The size and weight of this 16-35 with the extras looks like a winner. Might have to get it.
Great piece.. Have recently bought this lens and plenty of my friends sniffed cos its only F4!! Ive not had any issues re low light as I own a Fx9/6 and their low light performance as you've already mentioned are great and absolutely love this lens. lightweight, nice internal zoom and range. just love it!!
Great video and I really like the lens. But just wanted to comment that zooming in doesn't have a effect on depth of field. "Compression" is caused by changing the distance to the subject, so if you are using a 25mm at 1 meter and zoom in post to a 50mm equivalent it would be the same result as changing the lens at the same position. This get confused because usually if you change lens or zoom in the person would go further to maintain a similar shot and thus changing the compression. As a matter of fact the zolly you demonstrated in the beginning of the video only works because your changing the distance, and the zoom only mantains the frame. Changing focal length also changes the dof because of the magnification on the lens.
I don't mind f4 for a standard zoom, but almost every time I am using a wider focal length I tend to want f1.4-2.8 as I tend to be doing head to toe shots and its a nicer bit of separation. I can agree though that I dont "need" f2.8, as f4 would do the job functionally every time. But if I had my choice I would bring a fast wide every time anyway for the extra 10-20% subject separation on wide shots. Great video and I know the message you were going for!
Hey great vid! Just wondering does your focus ring on this lens also makes grinding noise as if there’s a dirt or sand stuck inside? The one that I got does make that noise. Thanks!
Thanks Amy for this great video! Quick question: I do architecture photography, do you find that with the lens profile correction on Lightroom, the distortions are well controlled? I understand that with uwa, there will always be distortions, but I just wanted your take on this. Thanks! 🙂
Hi! Please tell me: the side hand in your right hand is the same that is used on the left side that comes with the kit or is a speciall pne for the right side? Thanks!
I'm interested in this, mainly for low light indoor but the price is a little high, I get some good use from my F4 16-70 ZA, I find lower aperture doesn't give my the sharpness and depth I need. 16mm is wide enough to cover small rooms.
Take this lens out for street photos and you will be amazed by so many unique shots you can capture. The light weight comes in as huge help while walking around some time for couple of hours
I, too, have this lens and am.enjoying it. I'm a little disappointed with the distortion at 16 mm. Have you noticed this? I thought having lens correction set in camera would fix this at vide, but it doesn't.
@@amycreighton The distortion in this lens is actually why I avoided it over the 2.8 GM. I shoot street with architecture and the F4 has quite a bit more distortion mainly at 16mm. I also am speaking from a stills perspective since I don't shoot video. Idk if it's better in video mode.
The PZ 16-35 is just a fun little lens to play with. Yeah, it’s F4, but a recent trip to Disneyland did amazing for daylight / early evening stuff. As it got darker I swapped out to my love…24mm and all problems were solved. Seriously guys and gals. Check this lens out. 🤙
Clear image zoom is a type of digital crop with some Sony processing wizardry. There is zero compression with clear image zoom. Compression is only achieved when you zoom with the lens ( optically ) Great review though, we appreciate it Thank you
Amy, I agree with you 100%! Great lens. Especially when you have to pay attention to the weight on wilderness tours. Yes, we still have wilderness in Europe - just like in the rest of the world. If you are interested the link is to a film I shot a month ago in Lapland (Sweden) with this lens to 80% (the rest is with the Voigtländer 50mm F2 and Sony 100-400mm GM and the Mavic mini 3 pro): ruclips.net/video/XJEum4gjxvI/видео.html
My 16-35 TWO POINT EIGHT Gmaster smokes the F4, but it’s cool. It’s the best lens that you own. If you’re worried about muscle power, I see why use that. But, if you can handle carrying a bigger lens, you will see you’re using a toy
Don’t want to sound old but back in the day when I was a news camera man… there was no such thing as image stabilization… that’s how you learnt how to be a good camo! 😂

Thank you so much! I was feeling down on my Sigma 17 F4
No worries!
Can you explain what you mean that depth of field increases with clear image zoom? Is it not just cropping the sensor/image?

I often find myself in low-light scenarios so the 2.8 is mos def a need for me. But like you said it depends on what you're shooting.
Get an a7siii or fx3/fx6 like a real man

Not on this lens, but on my other g master I have this problem, we have been shooting on really dusty and windy farms.
What replacement would you recommend for FE-mount lenses?
thank you as i said i replaced my Gm Sony 16 to 35mm f2.8. for PZ16: 35mm f4 it has more reach lighter and i find the wide angle is better
Good stuff!
@@amycreighton i think i am going to make this same trade. I want lighter, more compact gear, not heavy stuff.
How do u like Sirui 75mm f/1.8 1.33x anamorphic lens ? as compared to Sony pz F4 16-35mm ?
I haven’t used that lens!
What do you think compared to the new 16-35 f 2.8 GMii?
Depends if you need that lower f stop!

Sigma 16-28 2.8 better. Cheaper und more better low light with 2.8
F/4 anytime - cheaper and Sony’s wide ISO range good reasons.
