- Question of the day: How fast can Nico Young run?
Nico Young is far and away the best cross country runner of 2019. Hailing from California, a state generally slam packed with competitive talent, Young has had an epic year with very few athletes approaching his speed.
On September 21st, Young ran the 3 mile distance in 13:39, breaking Craig Virgin's national high school record from 1972. At the California State meet, Young ran 14:28, only 4 seconds away from the course record held by German Fernandez from 2007.

this dude's insane, raced him at state last week and he was LITERALLY flying, after like the first 400 he already started making a gap, I couldn't keep up with him at all

Random Guy I would have appreciated a general NXN video more than a video about just Nico young bc it isn’t so unreasonable Sprout runs the same times as Young, considering they have the same 3200 PR and they both have improved a ton from last year in XC. Young is the favorite for NXN but a Sprout (or Methner) win would not be shocking

Got to see him when he blazed by me (I was there as a coach for my team) at the CIF Southern Section XC Finals on 11/23/19. Couldn't believe how far ahead he was at the halfway mark.
For track and field athletes and fans,your videos are educational for us. I never knew of the scissor jump technique until watching your video yest (as well as learning about all the winning streaks some of these amazing athletes carried). As a runner and a big time track and field fan,your videos are much appreciated. I would love to see a video on top 10 greatest female marathon runners if you ever have time to do one(forgive me if you done one already and I'm unaware). I think cole sprout is gonna upset. He’s my pick to win as I feel like he’s been holding back this year a little just waiting until tomorrow to show everyone he’s now at his peak. I think he’ll be confident in his abilities to beat nico based off how he ran at NXN in 2018. He was in the front row of the race the whole time and he responded to every move any contender made. I think Nico’s form on the upper end of his body is a result of him being a straight grinder and always pushing himself so hard so he gets tired but just keeps grinding. If it comes down to a kick I think nico will win but I wouldn’t be surprised if Cole pulls it out. I think Josh Mether, Ryan Schoppe, and Matt Strangio (who was sick at Clovis and still ran incredible) all have a solid shot. But in the end I gotta give it to Cole as last year he wanted the win so bad and got so close so I don’t think he wants to let nico take it away from him

@@tragic3901 Most 8:40 2-milers can go under 4:05 to sub 4, but he only ran 4:08. Additionally, his sophomore year he only ran 2:06(a pretty bad time, horrible for his caliber) for the 800m despite running 4:24? in the mile. He's an aerobic beast, but I don't see him being able to have the necessary 400m (at least 50.X-52) and 800m (~1:52) speed to go under four. I hope he proves me wrong.

Nico and Methner have similar times, but from personal experiences running at Detweiller, where Methner went 13:49, that course is probably one of the fastest courses in the nation... I would give Young the slight edge, but I’m intrigued to see how he responded to being raced with

I was there to see him race and when he finished he seemed barely tired.
Based on their past races and overall ability if they are healthy and push themselves to their limits at the race:
1. Josh Methner
2. Nico Young
3. Cole Sprout
4. Ryan Schoppe
Josh Methner set a 13:49 on a slower course than Nico’s 13:39 race. Cole Sprout beat Nico before, but Nico’s wins against him outnumber his and are more recent. Ryan Schoppe is the most underrated runner of 2019, but I doubt he’ll beat Cole.

Ask I watch this, and other videos, about great American high school runners, it makes what Jakob Ingebrigsten did in high school all that much more other wordly. And now at only 19, he is European champ in 1500M, 5K, 4th and 5th and same events in world championships. Approx. 3:47 miler, 7:51 300M, 13:02 5K, 27:54 10k. These are sick times for anybody, let alone an under 20.

I feel like nico will focus on either the 1600 or the 3200. He will still run both events, but I feel like he will train for one or the other not both. If nico trains for the 1600, I think his times will be 3:56.7 and 8:34.2. If Nico trains for the 3200, I think nico can run 3:59.1 and 8:23.9
I don't think he's fast enough for the 1600 but he'll kick ass at the longer stuff

This was post high school and of course early 2000’s as there’s been many changes to the science in running. But yeah I have felt good about my time only to see his junior time smash my mile time. I like nico young. But In a recent interview...he said that he’s been running since he was 6 years old. So he has about 12 years of training under his belt. I’m curious to see if he really runs much faster in college. My guess is that at his fastest he will be a 3:59 miler. 13:40 5k. If anyone knows him closer or more personally, feel free to disagree or present contrary evidence.

Nico Young is obviously a brilliant young athlete (no pun intended!) But, BUT, BUT... discussing cross-country times over different course is just ridiculous. If it is a REAL cross-country course it will be as tough as hell! Hills, Streams to ford, Fences to jump etc. Meaning you can only compare times on each course and have Course Records. But really, times in a crosscountry don't matter: it is the placing achieved. Plus, conditions can vary tremendously. Again, comparing a X/C course run on a groomed, flat, golf course in warm temperatures is not the same as another course run in 6 inches of snow and mud, up and down hills etc. Times in cross-country DO NOT MATTER! It is the placing that counts.
He doesn’t have excessive movement as you state. Are you a movement expert or therapist..? Without the movement you see, Nico wouldn’t run as fast as he has.

How fast can he run 400m? Even elite marathoners can run 50seconds for the 400m. He has endurance, but 13:39 is about as fast as he is might ever run for 5k if he doesn't have the speed.
