The song was entitled as a joke to Motley Crue's Vince Neil when one time Aerosmith's frontman was hanging out on a bar in Los Angeles when they spotted Vince Neil also hanging out on the same bar, his back facing Steven Tyler. Tyler quipped to his bandmates, "Who's that beautifully haired blonde?", pertaining to Neil but one of them replied, "Its one of the Motley Crues, Vince". Shocked, Tyler quipped "Dude is like a lady". The joke stucked with the band until, songwriter Desmond Child collaborated with Aerosmith to write the song in 1987. Child heard about what happened and was laughing all the time, and he taught it will be a catchy song title for a song. But Tyler initially objected saying it shall be offensive to the gay community. There was a debate in the studio while recording the song whether to title it, "Cruising with a lady" which Tyler prefer or "Dude is like a lady" which Child and the producers prefer. Tyler gave in, and the song title finally was named as it was known today
In any free society, the idea that someone 'couldn't' do a piece of art is sad. Do current times mark the first time a generation got *more* uptight and judgmental than the ones before it? At least to me, things sure seem less free than they did when this song came out. Anyone today takes any kind of risk and social media tries to destroy them before they've even really started. The very fact that they debated the title shows that no one intended to hurt anyone.
Steven Tyler is a freak of nature, he in his 70’s and sounds as good now as he did when he was in his 20’s . Fifty years of concerts singing and screaming as hard as he can and still sounds great
That song was played on Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams. He played the role of a housekeeper and Nanny for his own children, dressed up as an older woman after the courts rule that his visitation rights are taken away. Good movie.
The song was written about Vince Neil the lead singer of Mötley Crüe. Steven Tyler mistaken him for a woman because of his long blonde hair and make up. Hasn’t anything to do with Mrs. Doubtfire🤦♂️
One of the worst concerts I ever saw was Aerosmith at Long Beach Arena in 1983. It was my 21st birthday, I was reviewing it for Long Beach's daily newspaper, and a roommate, who would turn 21 the next day, was with me. The highlight was that we were in a riser to the left, not far from stage, and people were climbing from the seats through our section to get to the floor, and the security guy was letting them. Meanwhile the guys behind us had coke, and the security guard was snorting, too. They offered my roommate a line because they loved his mohawk.
"he sounds like a cat" - I agree, in fact me and my mom used to tease her cat like this by asking "are you in this song?", because sometimes when she meowed, it came out similar to Steven Tyler in that one part. RIP kitty, 2007-2017
The song was written about Vince Neil. They were at an award show together and they saw him and said: that dude looks like a lady. It was the eighties and Vince was a little Glammed up.
I accidentally met the entire band once lol. Their “newer” stuff is still very good but if you really wanna get to know the band, I HIGHLY suggest checking out pretty much ANYTHING they did in the 70’s. I am older and for me personally their 70’s stuff is the real Aerosmith.
@wyomarine FACTS. Back when the entire band would go into the studio and record the songs as they played them AND would release a new album EVERY year. Today, it’s like every 5 years lol.
He was talking about Vince Neil from Motley Crue. Back in the mid 80s Vince had the flowing blonde locks and tons of make up. So Stephen Tyler decided to feature him in this hugely popular song from the mid 80s
According to the Aerosmith biography book... "Dude looks like a lady" was inspired by meeting the members of Motley Crue back in 1985/'86. At the time, Motley Crue had a 'glam' image, when they wore lipstick and makeup, big hair and high heeled shoes... they were big fans of Aerosmith, and they were all talking like, "Dude... dude..." So apparently, that's where the song came from... it became a much-needed hit in 1987 after years of Aerosmith not having a hit single. After the Run DMC rap remake of 'Walk this way' in 1986, Aerosmith's next record 'Permanent vacation' in '87 was a huge record, selling 5X platinum in the USA.
"Liv, Liv, looks like her daddy...." as it was sang in a spoof for Tv show. I don't sing, but indeed there is a technique how to scream without fear of losing the voice, as countless of rock singers have done throughout the rock - history, especially during long tours. I think Steven Tyler had it as well but he re-learned away some bad habits.
These guys are awesome live. The first time(out of 4) I saw them, in the 70s, Kiss opened for them. After the last song Kiss couldn't even get off stage before people were yelling, "Aerosmith...Aerosmith". .... haha. Little did we know. That was the last time I saw Kiss open for anybody. lol
I think I paid like $15 for the concert. I was on the floor first row against the stage. Thought I was gonna get crushed a few times. lol I could have touched Gene S with a broom handle. To see KISS for the first time that close was a trip. After they were done someone passed out these pink cigarettes to the first few rows of people. By the time Aerosmith came out I was so high(two hits max). I think it was my sr yr in hs.
Kiss opened for them again around 2003 or so. I could be off on the year but I saw the concert. It was billed as a double headliner show but Kiss opened every show of the tour and Aerosmith closed, which is how it should be lol. I’m not a Kiss fan at all. I couldn’t wait for them to get off stage. And I wasn’t the only one.
Need to check out the story behind this song . Soooo funny 🤣 He walked up to what he thought was a good looking girl at an after party , and it turned out to be Vince Neil the lead singer from Motley Crue. (80's) 🤣🤣🤣
Speaking about “Cinderella’s” lead singer, Tom Keifer. In I believe 1991 he had lost his voice and went to several specialist. It was determined that he had paralysis of his left vocal chord. He was told that he would never sing again but Tom had found the right doctor that was able to surgically repair the injury. After surgery and months of physical therapy his voice is back and stronger than ever. Although it is said before his performances he does warm up exercises that can sometimes last for hours. But at least he is still out there to this day doing shows so I’m guessing it was worth it.
Aerosmith produced several mixes of this song in a 12" promotional format. They are still available on youtube under a variety of names. Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady) (Urban Dude 12" Mix) Aerosmith - Dude Looks Like A Lady (Extended Rockin' Dude Mix) 1987 Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady) (Dude This Way) (A Capella 12" Mix) Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady) (Rockin' Dance Edit)
I remember we all loved at this and laughed when we saw the video of it. Its a great song Steven Tylor has great sound, he was talking about glam rockers , Tyler was into women
Unfortunately, this song has nothing to do with being trans: nor is it an allegory for transgenderism. It was literally an observation piece aimed at Vince Neal for looking too much like a woman during a time where big hair and flamboyant dress was the fashion.
I don't think that Stephen's singing voice deviates all that far from his normal speaking voice so that's probably why he has been able to maintain that longevity.
I like Aerosmith and Steven Tyler in particular, but am not a hardcore fan, so I didn't know this song... but as I love to watch Lex and Brad, I decided to give it a try, and I was not disappointed... this was fire! 🔥Love it!
Wow, this was a huge hit for them in the late 80's. Early 90's? Surprised you never heard it. This and Love in an Elevator from the album before this one were huge for them.
The song is inspired by seeing Vince Neil in the bar, as others have said, but it’s also definitely about getting fooled, thinking the person was a woman but was actually a man. Much like Lola. Hence the lyric, “She had a body of a Venus, Lord, imagine my surprise.” I prefer their later stuff, like pump and beyond, but their entire catalog is great all the way back to 1973.
Bit of trivia for you. Aerosmith made the habit of having a weekly, 'That sucks' meeting. Where the band members would put out their craziest ideas. And yeah, a lot of ideas were in the category of 'that sucks'. But every now and then you'd get, 'Dude looks like a Lady'.
He was telling the story how they were at some club and some dude walked up but he looked like a lady. They had a good laugh about it. The next day they sat down and were trying to come up with lyrycs for a the music they had wrote. And everytime he started he would say "Dud Looks Like a Lady".
Steven Tyler's belting got the best of him when he burst a blood vessel in his vocal fold that prevented him from singing properly. He went on to have surgery with a gentle laser that sealed the ruptured vessel in 2006.
He confused Vince Neil from Motley Crue with a Lady in a bar. Also, when Aerosmith first met Motley Crue, Steven Tyler was shock by the way the guys in Motley Crue spoke. Apparently they were all the time "Dude, this" and "Dude, that", so he got the ideas from those 2 encounters from the guys in Motley Crue, the singer looked like a lady, and they were all the time saying "dude this and dude that". That is basically the story of the song. Someone else in the comments already explained the rest of it in detail too.
The video Love In An Elevator is cool. Joey K. Is choking a rubber chicken in the elevator. Love 98% of A.smiths songs. The Screaming Demon. Toxic twins gave Us many musical gems. Read 1 of their books. Get Your Wings is outrageous. Our classic rockers are getting older, but most still sound good still. S. T.s voice has always been amazing. Rock on! 🎸
You need to show the videos this one is funny as hell 🤣 ,and Walk this way it's their song from the 70's and in the 80's they let RUN DMC do a mix with them and that video is funny as well. This song was written about VInce Neil from Motley Crue. They saw him and thought he was a lady until they got close to him or heard him talk, I don't remember exactly. I heard Desmond Child say that somewhere.
If you watched the official video it would answer a lot of questions. Attracted to a woman who turns out to be a dude.. and NOT being mad about it. There's even a clip in the video where Tyler is in drag.
The inspiration of the song has been posted 12,000 times, but as for the lyrics, you don't hear him saying no at any point. In fact every indication is that he's just rolling with it.

Screaming and growling can be done without damaging vocal chords. Melissa Cross (the scream queen) has worked with Slipknot, Disturbed, and Slayer (just to name a few) to learn to scream and growl without hurting their vocal chords.
Check out a Hair Band called Great White - Cold Hearted Lovin , Rock Me , Once Bitten Twice Shy , Congo Square , Southbay Cities , Angel song . Almost nobody has reviewd this Band and they are freakin great .
