@thomasurquhart507 Old comment, but I'll counter Mark Lanegan. Should've hopefully already heard of him, if not, you're in for a treat. He's like Tom Waits's doppelganger, they both have very gravelly baritone singing voices and a wide and intense range. Even look basically the same. Very different songwriting, I can tell from the lyrics easily who wrote what. They are much more alike than different though. Mark Lanegan's more dark and drug/rock and roll, and Tom Waits while also very dark is also a lot stranger and a bit more poetic. There are many songs/albums with Lanegan to check out though. He has an extensive solo and features discography, with some fantastic solo albums and a lot of work with people like Isobel Campbell, PJ Harvey, Duff McKagan, Skeleton Joe, Greg Dulli, Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri. He started with Screaming Trees in the 80s/90s singing more old-school psychadelic rock style music. In the early 2000s, his work with Queens of the Stone Age on Songs for the Deaf and Rated R was phenomenal, some of my favorite songs by him in there. You should check out Song for the Dead and In the Fade by QotSA, Nearly Lost You and All I Know by ScreamingTrees, and Idle Hands by Gutter Twins. Outside of bands he played with, his album Bubblegum is my favorite followed by probably Blues Funeral. His folk albums are great too though, Whiskey For The Holy Ghost being my favorite, but they're all dope. I love a lot of his duets with Isobel Campbell too, especially the Townes van Zandt covers. Not one of his albums is bad and a good number of his albums are fantastic front to back. Sorry for the drunken ramble 4 months out. But if you haven't heard of him, you should check him out.

I am impressed by the wide range of songs he has,and his lyrics are right up there with Bob Dylan, its not all one style and the voice ... well I guess you can say its an acquired taste, first listen I was just like what the ff?...... but my opinion has changed, Truth is,he is without question, an incredible songwriter and has taken a voice only a mother could love and managed to use it artistically and have a unique sound. now I wish I had not left such a judgmental comment, I will leave it up there though! I said what I said, I wont pretend I didn't by erasing a comment, but my feelings have completely changed, went from thinking he was shit to thinking he is gold. I really love his song "hold on" and also "hell broke luce" they both have some real depth of meaning and such wildy different style from one to the other.

Another eerie coincidence is that Heath was born in Australia the same year of the first Interview with Don Lane. In all, pretty cool to see where he drew part of his inspiration from. His performance was definitely one of the best in Super Hero (live action) film history.

In Early 1976 I picked up Tom Waits in my cab on Spruce Street in Phila around 10 pm. He told me who he was and where he would like to go, which was Bala Cynwyd just North of CityLine Avenue. I told him that I had never heard of him and he said that was alright, that not alot had at that time. We stopped at Days Deli on Spruce Street so he could get a sandwich to take with him and asked me if I wanted anything. I said no thanks and then we left a few minutes later. I never forgot his name and remembered who he said he was. Later in 1976 I flew to Rome and was there and in Florence for a little over a week. Then on to Munich and then to London. I was in London for about 3 days and was on the bus from Victoria Station going to Hethrow Airport. The bus passed the London Palladium and their on the markee in front was a sign: Tom Waits would appear for a concert and it mentioned a date I cant remember. That's when I realized who he was. It was great to meet him and I'm sorry I didnt recognize him in Phila. I'm glad he's still going.

To anybody here saying he's on any drugs, he isn't. Through this point in his life time he had anxiety, that's why he tended to keep himself together and look away from the audience very often. His fedora was tilted so that his face would be hidden. The interviewer did a really good job in making Tom Waits feel comfortable.

I just watched this interview for the first time and I read as many comments as my attention span would allow.I'd just like to say that this is vintage Tom Waits. He's a great actor. To say he's drunk is to not get Waits. The interviewer on the other hand has no idea how to deal with Waits. He's trying to compete with Waits and he has no chance, and his nervousness is painful to watch, because he knows he doesn't know how to handle Waits. Wait's himself is cool as a cucumber, despite the condescending comedy of the interviewer. It's one of the most painful interviews I've ever seen, but you keep watching because it's fascinating to watch Waits never break character. And when he finally starts performing at the piano, as a viewer I wanted Waits to elbow the interviewer off the piano bench. But Waits doesn't skip a beat and gives the performance of a lifetime.
