good one ... I always need a refrigerator in my car for long drives because I need to keep my medicines cool ... this is exactly what the doctor ordered !! 🤓
@@edwardhackett-jones8126 The 12 volt battery is in the Frunk under the plastic panel cover. There are other accessories on the market like an LED light kit and a Power Lift gate that tap into that battery terminal directly with a short wire harness. Sure, the installation is not as easy as just plugging into an outlet, but it would still be a DIY type project.
The frunk can reach very high temperatures which might great lower the efficiently. Especially do not leave items you want to keep cool in the frunk with the air conditioning on while in park. And especially not in Thailand in the Summer! ;-)
@@bearlemley That makes sense, however, the number of Teslas sold in non-tropical climates like the US, Europe and China dwarfs the number sold in tropical climates like Thailand. So it makes business sense to tap into the use cases for the non-tropical markets.
Pretty damn cool Lars (pardon the pun)... certainly beats anything else in the auto market, even that of Champagne coolers in a Rolls Royce. Safe travels & enjoy your various driving adventures away this summer.
As any fridge is based on a thermal exchange when changing the state of a gas through chemical reaction, it must produce heat outside for producing cooling inside (exothermal reaction). Have you noticed how warm it gets? I imagine the air conditioning system must compensate for this, hence drawing a little more energy as what the fridge app would show. Of course when at rest the air conditioning is off, but probably not when driving, the energy draw would be interesting to analyse in such conditions.
The downside is that it must dump the heat removed, and most of that would go into the trunk space. That would increase the load on air conditioning, though wouldn't be a problem in winter. I wonder if it might be better to design one for the frunk, where it could dump the waste heat into the cooling airflow.
How cool is that! My Wife & I are about to sleep in our model 3 for the first time at ‘Supercharged’ in the UK 😬 If we get on well, a Model Y/more camp trips are on the cards 🤞 Great Vid as usual Lars 👍
Hi we bought the BougeRV 12 Volt Refrigerator, 30 Quart 12V Car Fridge, Portable Freezer Compressor Cooler Compressor Freezer, 12/24V and put 2 standoffs on the cover to raise it for better air circulation and added a small jackery battery extra power to not drain our MY. We use it all the time for grocery shopping too. Have fun and thanks Lars
I got a 20 quart from Amazon and I use it when I go on trips. It uses 0.25 miles of battery per hour on eco mode and can act as a refrigerator or freezer and it’s quite. It works without having sentry mode on in my y performance.
How does the heat get out of the trunk? I live in Glendale near Phoenix in Arizona and I would worry that it will burn up here if not vented to outside air or conditioned inside air. We can’t run refrigerators or freezers in our garages here because they would never turn off.
I bought an ice chest that’s a pain in the trunk, floating around & getting in the way, plus this eliminates all the ice that takes up space/cools unevenly & melted water hassle. However, great question about how the heat gets exhausted! I was about to buy two, but need this answered first. However, if UL approved in the US (is Europe equivalent?) I’m hoping that’s a nonissue.
i can't wait to see your family camping trip experience with model y tent, good or bad weather, kids catching fish, cooking--eating them, best family memories ever--lifetime1

I have more questions after watching this video. Is the loss of 1-2% for 12 hours on fridge mode-freezer mode- or mixed use. When in freezer mode for 12 hours, what's the consumption then? When it is on fridge mode, what is the 12 hour consumption then? When it is used in mixed mode for 12 hours what's is the consumption then? Is it possible to use fridge and freezer mode simultaneously (for examp, e use one half to keep food cold and the other frozen? (Some products can not be kept frozen, like vegetables and drinks). Fridge/freezer is mostlybising a peltier or heat/cold pump technology. One side is cold the other side is hot, to dissipate heat. Do you have any overheating issues with the fridge/freezer in the lower boot compartment, if so, how do you deal with that, or does the lower boot space dissipate heat efficiently below the car? Can the fridge/freezer be used in the frunk. If so, why, why not? If you don't want to use it via the sentry mode workaround, what are the alternative options? Thanks.
You entirely neglected mentioning anything about the Left Box Refrig and Right Box Freezer controls as shown in the app at approx 2:20!? Is it possible to configure the fridge to have the Left side cold, with the Right Side as a Freezer?
They’re expensive though… As others have said, the frunk would be a better place for it, but there’s no 12v outlet there - perhaps Tesla will take note?!!
But how does it lose the heat, all fridges have a part that gets hot as they remove the heat from the items being cooled, and this heat has to be dissipated to the environment, not possible in an enclosed space. Every fridge I've ever seen specifies how much clearance is needed etc, or there is a vent that needs installing like on a caravan..... If it's 30 to 40c outside that thing is going to be working hard - where is the vent etc.
the vent is at the top, and you put on spacers for the lid that goes on top so it has space for venting air, if the air in the car gets too hot you can have it automaticly run the AC to lower it, cabin overheat protection
I have a refrigerator for my car but not custom for Tesla. Very similar and uses the power/cig outlet. Thing is it needs ventilation just like a fridge at home. Unless I missed it your’s is in tight with no ventilation. Concerned that it is not efficient or it is mind blowing good. Do not know which.
Excellent Lars! I am assuming that you have to pre-chill the unit before you pull the carpet cover down on it? The heat that you were pulling out of the inside has to bleed off you fish at least some way... 🤔🇺🇲

3% in 12 hours is too much. That will drain your battery in a week. The fridge alone should only take about 200 Wh/day. Keeping sentry mode on when you don't need it uses a lot of energy.
01:22 What a terrible house. Special electric car drivers should not think, the electricity comes out of the wall socket. 04:49 At a 77 kWh battery 3% are 2.37 kWh. Refrigerators of this size have usual a yearly consumption of 130 kWh. So for half a day 0.2 kWh.

where does it put the heat? the fridge totally fills the undertrunk and there is no venting to the undertrunk.
I am curious too. I put a fridge (another brand) in the frunk and it gets quite warm , I have to keep the lid off the sub trunk.
The downside is that it must dump the heat removed, and most of that would go into the trunk space. That would increase the load on air conditioning, though wouldn't be a problem in winter. My question where can the heat generated by fridge escape? It looks like there is NO ventilation in that compartment
