It's really interesting to see directors being interviewed in a casual one-shot setting rather than a high production scripted/edited interview - makes them seem like a normal person in the best way possible
Getting his story produced without it being completely eviscerated is impressive. The worry of not knowing if he’s “still in the movie” is pretty relatable as many artists would agree.
Matt Johnson is a sleeper master filmmaker and will be a household name by the end of this decade. BlackBerry was the very best film of 2023 imo, and The Dirties (2013) is as prescient as ever.
Many would consider Pig to be one of the best films of the decade and you injected humanity into Day One that made that film feel equally grounded despite being a franchise film. A bright future ahead for you from a young age!
I dropped Michael a line on Twitter weeks before A Quiet Place: Day One started shooting, mainly because I had just seen Pig (2021) and thought it was the best film of the last five years or so. I let him know how much his feature debut effected me emotionally and wished him well on his big studio adventure. He was kind enough to write back and was incredibly friendly and gracious. Turns out he made a better A Quiet Place film than either of Krasinski's. Great dude, great filmmaker.
Pig is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and I loved Day One as well, so to see Michael getting to talk with you about making movies from two very different, respectful perspectives is so lovely. The more people that see cinema as a broad kind of spectrum of what you can achieve in terms of money and artistry rather than a harsh divide between the haves and have-nots, the more we can legitimize and celebrate all different kinds of voices and films :)
I loved Pig and really enjoyed Day One and it was great to hear about the artist behind them and how they were made! I really like this candid interview format, and I'd love to see more like this with others and even with Michael again.
I finally made time to watch Pig this afternoon and loved it. Decided to run it back with Quiet Place and enjoyed that too! Really interesting to watch with the context of Michael's and Joel's thoughts from this video. Great job! Cool!
This is such a cool idea for a series! Lots of people find it valuable to hear what different directors think and say about the film industry. Loved hearing you two discuss the trade-offs that can come with big-budget mainstream blockbusters. P.S. I loved Pig
i love that you have the shirt from Hiccups on! i'm excited to see more of this Series Michael is a fantastic director and this was such an interesting watch dude!
Good to see the guy who wrote too many poems trying to follow the dreams of a girl he can never get back is now finding his own way interviewing really down to earth writer/directors. Hope fame and success doesn't corrupt either of them
One of the most impressive things about Day One was that it was still clearly made by the same director as Pig. Not every indie director gets to keep that much of themselves in their work after jumping to a Hollywood production.
I went to see a quiet place day one knowing pretty much nothing about it, I expected a mindless horror action movie but instead I was positively surprised by it being so character driven and smaller in scope
Great discussion between two professional film artists. I have seen both of the movies you discussed and thought both films had a depth of authenticity and sincerity. After hearing this discussion, I can see how Sarnoski brought those qualities to Pig and A Quiet Place Day One. Hope to see more from this writer/director.
@joeltalksaboutmovies to think you didn't even ADR your voice over Michael's shows you've drifted from center, Joel. You could have had him say anything!... even exactly what he says here but in your voice!
The section about getting small stuff seen vs the big productions, and the thoughts about AI was something to think about. So many ideas and sources of creativity often not seen!
I love that it's unspoken but indubitably understood that Joel is Michael's most qualified fan and serious critic, bar none, no follow-up questions. lol
We'll always need Robin Hood movies! This is our scripture, this popular culture. Never mind the fact that every artist has their unique touch, every generation needs interpretations of the great lessons (see Shakespeare!), and---. Lordy, don't get me started. I, personally, very much look forward to any interpretation of the Robin Hood story, which is all the more reason to look forward to this new film in Ireland with Hugh Jackman. All the best, from scorched Middle America (if geographically Southern).
10:08 Michael: Even in a big movie, somehow you never have enough money or time Joel: Yeah Lie detector is chirping on that statement. Joel doesn't know what not enough time/money for a movie is. He's going to get 6 movies released in a month + some change. #jokes

I bet working with Nicolas Cage was insaneo style
I heard they’re putting that on the Blu-ray
@@joeltalksaboutmoviesNicolas Cage or Insaneo Style?
@@koira1Nicholas cage IS insaneo style
Completely insaneo style. We'll see about the Blu-ray.

can’t wait for the series finale where Joel interviews acclaimed amateur filmmaker Jole Hayv’r.
Man, Pig is one of the best movies I've seen in the past decade. The fact that Joel is friends with the director is insanely cool
pretty insaneo style if you ask me
Oh hell yeah, I'm delighted Joel's making this a series. I would love to see Joel talk with Matt Johnson
hoooly shit yes that would be so cool :0

@@ChrisMeadows92 I have to agree with you! Blackberry amazed me, last year. I just watched the Dirties a month ago and I'm really sold on his talents!

I know a few people who worked on Pig, they said it was a blast to work on! I’ve enjoyed hearing some of those behind the scenes stories. Great film.
PIG is an incredible watch! Congrats Joel, this sounds like a great series 💪🎬
I really needed to hear this, so insightful!

i absolutely LOVED Day One, my favorite of the Quiet Place movies!! So moving, terrifying, and bittersweet, thanks for sharing your art!

Excited about this series! Loved the discussion so much thank you Joel and Michael
Sarnoski's attitude is inspiring. Refreshing. Seriously. Helps me have hope for the arts.
Pig is my favorite movie of the decade so far, can't wait to see what Michael does next.
This is such a cool idea for a series! Lots of people find it valuable to hear what different directors think and say about the film industry. Loved hearing you two discuss the trade-offs that can come with big-budget mainstream blockbusters.

Wow. What a treasure. Love this channel. One of the few channels on YT that feels like it fuels my energy.
Great format, great chat
Great interview! It’d be super cool to see you interview Matt Farley in the future!
I went to see a quiet place day one knowing pretty much nothing about it, I expected a mindless horror action movie but instead I was positively surprised by it being so character driven and smaller in scope
Michael is awesome, I’d love to listen in on more conversations like this
The only reason joel does not make movies with millions of dollars is because the budget breakdown video would be a movie in itself
Awesome interview bro

So good Joel. Thank you for this. ❤
He got you at the end though. You looked.
Another Joel classic video
Well this seems like a lovely video
Oh snap!
somehow Joel ended up interviewing himself
Im appalled. This is Joel Talks About Movies and half the video is a non-Joel talking about movies. Any excuse, Joel?
Joel Listens About Movies sometimes too

I have no excuses, I can only try to be better in the future

Is that you? Videogamedunkey?
No that's not him, everyone knows Dunkey is black.
This was a very interesting style of interview
This video goes insaneo mode. Style. Insaneo style

Watch his movie "Hiccups"
I LOVE Robin Hood and King Arthur movies! I can't wait! ❤
If someone wants something enough, they'll do the work to get there whether or not someone says they can
Wow cool stuff. Cool friends.
Pig was one of the better films coming out these recent years!
omg what i loved pig. this crossover

yo what :0 crazy. so cool
Why are you doing this interview on what looks like the world's most uncomfortable chairs ha?
