      @@tillburr6799 the narrator said he tries to remember what life was like before the building, but can’t, and that it’s better not to dwell on it. Earlier he said that the journal of the philosopher says that he would give all his memories, hardships, good times, everything, just to bring back his wife. The woman waits outside the door every night, and when he approaches her, she calls him his darling, and he is overwhelmed with loss and sadness, crawling over to her just so he could touch her grimey foots he wakes up in his bed with footprints leading out the door the next morning. The way that it’s supposed to be perceived is that he was the philosopher, and gave everything he had to bring his wife back.

    SPOILER:
    For anyone confused by the twist:
    "Every little memory that makes him who he is, he'd give it all just to save her."
    And he did. He's the philosopher and now he's the caretaker.

    • @SleepyNekroma
      @SleepyNekroma 2 года назад +34

      But how would he be the caretaker? the caretaker remembers comin into town but the philosopher was there long before hand right? yeah the wife refers to "my Darling" but that could have been referring to the room, basically going 'this was the room of my darling, and now you live here' type of thing. and if the caretaker has seen the wife he's likely seen family photos of the philosopher and the wife, it the caretaker was the philosopher he may have mentioned how they looked the same or alike? The caretaker came to town later after the philosopher so how would they be the same? it's an interesting idea though, but it doesn't make sense to me..

    • @badcookie5755
      @badcookie5755 2 года назад +145

      @@SleepyNekroma it's confirmed in the original reddit post in the comments. My theory is: He gave everything up, even his memories and sometimes, when you don't remember how you got to be somewhere, your head makes something up to bridge the difference. It could've also been his original memory of coming to the place, but he forgot the reason (his wife) and forgot his initial stay. So when his plan succeeded he forgot everything and his memory continues from the moment he walked back into his room and didn't recognize it anymore and therefore assumes it's the old room of some philosopher. There's no mention of pictures or anything. Everything else related to his wife (his research, his ritual, how it succeeded etc) is gone. I think the "my darling" thing has been intentionally placed this way, so we are confused until she goes for him and survives. Then his last sentences could pull everything together, because he himself doesn't remember anymore.

    I was confused at first like how is this supposed "squatter" so articulate with his choice of words and chalked it all up as just "it's a story ofcourse the writer is gonna make it sound a lot cooler." But then the twist at the end made a lot of things click. Looks like only his memory was lost. Part of me believes he got some closure with his wife, but because of the deal he made even his memories of their brief time together that night were taken because he sold "every little thing that made him who he is" and his wife is a part of that. Also ties in with his comment while looking through the peephole saying she looks sad. Ofcourse she would. She may have been brought back but now her husband won't come to her. It must have been bittersweet for her to finally carry him back to his bed knowing that their encounter that night might be the only time they ever meet again, before returning to her post outside his door every night. Also also makes sense that the room he's in is the safest since you have her standing guard there. You may be an eldritch entity brewed from the pits of whatever darkness you crept up from, but you don't wanna mess with this undead lover and her beloved husband.

    I guess it's because we are getting closer to Halloween but all my favorite narrators have put out their best works the last few days. Thanks man, this was simply awesome. Such great details and not the played out typical rules story. I've been dying to listen to your last one but the 6 hour stories are hard to fit into my days and useless at night. I'd definitely go to sleep and trying to backtrack and find my place in a 6 hour story guarantees I'll miss much and get confused. But my physical pain and my depression will hit hard one day soon and I'll drive into the story that day. Thanks for all your time and effort!

    I gotta say man something about your accent and the way you talk somehow infuses extra dread in your tales, like your cheerful next door neighbor you've known for years explaining to you why he had to chop up his wife and bury her remains in the nearby woods.
