What I don't understand is how the highway patrol are such good marksmen... Btw, pistoliers and outriders should've never been a thing for tOW and it should've been road wardens all along. Technically we're supposed to be in very early gunpowder empire. The knightly orders already embracing it to this extend feels iffy. (and special guns such as pistols and repeaters should be rather high status).
@barator03 But there's still certain dates (or at least roughly defined points in time) the in the lore for specific technologies (iirc the hellblaster is from around tOW). It doesn't follow the real world progressions though. Steamtanks by far predate widespread imperial use of gunpowder (good thing then that it doesn't use gunpowder). In other words, steam tank is fine from an established lore perspective, hellstorm maybe not. Fun fact: War Altars and State Troops are also retcons. Previous lore links both to Magnus the Pious! At this point the empire shouldn't have a standing state army.
Happy Christmas!! Congrats my little lordling pistoliers , you have been bequeathed with the following: an honest days work. Congrats on your promotion to Road Wardens!!
Don't actually play, but collect warhammer old world and I just wanted to say thank you for yalls content. Really enjoy it and I think both of you bring the best and most content on old world! Can't wait to get my hands on the empire units...
Not having access to Lvl4 Wizards is fluffy for the Empire during the time period of The Old World setting. It might be an issue in game, but having fluffy restrictions on lists is a good thing in my opinion.
I like the concept of the restriction, each army has a theme to it. Before the colleges of magic wizards probably aren't the most professional or trusted by the knights as well. Hopefully, they are balanced enough. If someone plans on being a knight centered empire force these give some options, and they probably weren't going to be doing as much magic anyway. They'll just have to use magic items for dispels, or the alter + magic resistance. Would the alter effectively stack with magic resistance?
I loved how the Nuln City Staates does strengthten your Infantery. Solid Block of 40 Hellebardiers with 40 Missile Troopers, Protected by 10 Archers, flanked by 4-6 Warmachines and towerd by Warwaggons and the ability of an Ambush by pistoliers.
I was obsessed with roadwardens because of Mordheim. Glad to see them on the table. As an empire player, I'm long used to not having great rules. It is an uphill struggle every time but thematically appropriate
Knightly Order just seems so restrictive, would be better if they were just upgrades you could buy in Grand Army. Then have a completely different theme for the second Army of Infamy. That way people can still run their fully thematic knightly order if they want to
Right? And even mixing knightly orders but requiring a character with the “mark” like Heralds. The siege of Prague literally saw all the knightly orders riding together.
@@sparklestonebroI know, and it's super restrictive, I couldn't see any issue with allowing whatever knightly orders you wanted in Grand Army, which then frees up the second army of infamy slot for something else, maybe a Middenland army, or state troop heavy army that actually buffed them
Make no sense to mix them in the same army, GW don't write lists to be effective but to be fluffy and have a theme and that is a good thing. Almost all people who play do so against people they know. When you know the opponent and opponent army it is quite easy to make these rather specialised rules shine. GW don't write lists for matched play... if you do then half the game will likely not be usable to you and that is your problem. Most people can make work of this just fine. Those knights or Morr are excellent against Vampire Count and Tomb Kings for example and that is the type of battles these Knights will generally fight in. I don't see why an Elector Count would call in the Knight of Morr unless they fight the undead. Does not mean they could show up to fight something else, but that is fluff and you could just take them without their special rules if you fight something else or just take some other knightly order special rules in those battles. No one would really care if you do. They are still Knights of Morr and you can refer to them as such. At the end of the day it is all about if you want to build that army or not and like the models or colour scheme. What rules you choose to use does not really matter.
@@MrCABman1972 you can already create a non thematic list in Grand Army by taking a Wizard, priest of Sigmar and Priest of Ulric. My favourite part of the book was all the references to factions not yet in the game, like Araby and Vampire counts. Seems like they aren't just writing them out, keeps me hopeful for 2.0

Crazy idea for Nuln considering the mandatory detachment. You make it decently sized, with two detachments of hand which are two lines deep. Save the ability to fire in a second rank for supporting fire and hope its enough to make combat winable.
On Lowenhacke, Talisman + Jade Amulet is 55pts to get rhe ward and no killing blow, plus he gets a Grandmasters WS and A, and if the hammer isnt strikes last, thats a really good deal
Overall quite happy with the arcane journal. Empire is primed to lean into certain builds and seeing black powder and horse builds is quite refreshing. Hoping for a hunter themed build in the future.

Spectral doppelganger sword of justice with an Ulric priest in the unit results in 4d6 auto hits rerolling wounds with multiple wounds (4)
Spectral doppelganger also works with headsman's axe if you want 4d6 hits with killing blow
Spectral doppelganger would also work with the new hammer if you want your opponent to roll 4d6 leadership checks and quit the game out of boredom
Word of pain - double doombolt / Stream of corruption
Double Daemonic Familiars
Take ruby ring and cast 3 fireballs a turn
Double miasmic mirage can stop a large chunk of your opponents army from doing anything
Double soul eater if you wanna meme someone to death in a challenge
Take the armour on someone else in the unit and cast 3x hammerhand

Double wind blast sounds amazing.

Absolutely
You can but you go to a 4+ save if you use the bound item.
Much better on a character.
I'm confused on the imperial ogres, barely any difference to them vs badlands ogres, are you able to take more or something?
Some minor weapon option differences
Slightly different
Great review! I’m jazzed about having usable heavy infantry.
What a Christmas treat.
On Lowenhacke, Talisman + Jade Amulet is 55pts to get rhe ward and no killing blow, plus he gets a Grandmasters WS and A, and if the hammer isnt strikes last, thats a really good deal
Sounds very promising! Hoping to see something similar for High Elves!
Will be next year
Happy Christmas!
I love how consistent GW have been with this Arcane Journal. Empire was underpowered in the index release, and GW have kept that here! Perfect.
Overall quite happy with the arcane journal. Empire is primed to lean into certain builds and seeing black powder and horse builds is quite refreshing.
Hoping for a hunter themed build in the future.
Happy Christmas guys!
