Lt. Dans arc is so real to me. Even before I knew it. My back problems put a stop to my gym bodybuilding passion. I was great, now I'm just average. Gotten a bit overweight. Have bad sleep due to inflammation and pain (before I slept like a baby). And overall felt like shit for 1.5 years. I really wanted to end it all. I had no love interests, no passions, except gym through my 17-22 yo. Now I'm 24 and went through all stages of 5 stages of grief (you may find it laughable, but if you have one strong passion in life, and suddenly ripped off of it, you'll understand. I got up at 5 am to go to the gym. I was doing it 6 times a week.). And just like Lt. Dan I've come to terms with it. And it feels like I found another passion in life - programming. I loved maths in school and Uni, and always liked logical stuff. Programming is what I do all of my free time. Sure I can't do bodybuilding anymore. But life moves on. As did Lt. Dan. As did I.
If you feel like shit, and want to take the final decision - trust me. You always can do it, just say: I can always do it tomorrow. And tomorrow say the same. Move day by day. Week by week. Seek passion. And you'll prevail.

It was part of his character. When he was a kid he wore leg braces because he had weak bones. He also had some form of learning disability. He got stronger and overcame his physical disability. He can carry people cause he can run quite well at that point. His learning disability made him a bit literal and child-like in thinking but helped him become good at stuff like Ping pong and made him famous etc. He doesn't overcome the learning disability but we see him grow through it.
Later in the movie he runs the entire US coast to coast a few times. (in case you haven't watched it yet)

Some were useful in cleaning or cooking situations, but they were very dangerous in combat, as they were as likely to kill their own men as the enemy. Forrest, because he never thought about using his gun, was not that dangerous. He was also actually not a moron, as he could remember and obey simple orders, which is more than the morons could.

Since the whole movie was the resemblence of modern American history, what happened to Lieutenant Dan was the resemblence of Vietnam trauma over Americans. A guy that comes from a family history of fighting with victories, he was furious not only losing his legs but not having a chance to die. While it was seen that he was blaming Forrest because he saved him, he was also blaming himself inside for the defeat. The whole depression process evolved later into being angry to life at all until it ended with the ship scene.
It was really satisfying to see a good ending for Dan, having a peace finally.
