  • In his vocal analysis, Dr Dan from Voice Essentials examines the stellar performance of Lea Salonga, renowned for her role in the 1998 Mulan movie, singing 'Defying Gravity' from the musical Wicked. He appreciates how Salonga drops the original key of the song, D flat major, by a semitone to C major to accommodate her vocal range, demonstrating that altering a song to suit your vocal abilities can lead to successful execution. Furthermore, Salonga's precise voice placement and strategic transition from low to upper register, avoiding too heavy a sound too quickly, is highlighted as a valuable skill in smooth singing.
NB: I incorrectly said the Mulan movie came out in 1991...it was actually 1998.
Dr Dan also notes her consistent vibrato, agile body state, and excellent breath management, maintaining even airflow and avoiding excessive phonatory threshold pressure. Despite not delivering a full belt note at certain high points, she still receives commendation for her choices, reinforcing that singers can infuse their individual style and voice strengths into a performance.

⚠️ As a singing voice specialist, I fully acknowledge that each live performance is a snapshot in time and does not encapsulate the entire spectrum of an artist's work, nor can it predict their future evolution. I understand that a myriad of factors, both positive and negative, can influence the delivery of a live performance. I strive to appreciate and critique each live rendition for its own merits, independent of the artist's past or potential future performances. Recognising the ebb and flow of live music, I value its spontaneity, novelty, and individuality and strive to give it the thoughtful consideration it deserves.

She is amazing - I was lucky enough to see her playing Kim on the preview night of Miss Saigon in London, 1989. How she has gone from strength to strength since then!

Lea Salonga is a true master of the vocal arts! I went to see Les Mis way back in 2007 in NYC and to our surprise, Lea Salonga was singing Fantine for just that day as a special performance! While it wasn't her iconic Eponine role (she was a little older than Eponine), she did a stunning job and I'm thrilled that I got to hear her live.

Lea went into the broadway revival of Les Miz in 2007 playing Fantine for about 7 months (March - October). So she actually played Fantine longer than she played Eponine. (I think she was only on broadway for maybe a month and also short engagements on the West End and the national tour.)

Amazing performance and great analysis of it. Very interesting and informative. Loved seeing the example of buoyant body in her performance that I would have thought was purely visually theoretical if you had not pointed out the vocal benefit of it. The throw away note was cool. Again seemed to be purely theatrical but worked to get that note without getting that note. Great technique to try. The way she made choices to get the best performance in a live concert situation was masterful. It makes me curious about how it would differ in a studio recording. 🤔 Excellent analysis Dr. Dan. I really enjoyed that.

Agreed. So many people listen to Lea sing (not only Disney stuff) and note that she has the perfect Disney voice. Lea has sung a lot of Disney songs in concerts over the years and I believe several years back someone made a compilation video comparing clips of Lea to the original Disney singers. But I'm pretty sure there are also full vids of Lea singing different Disney songs as well. Plus, Lea did "How Far I'll Go" from "Moana" as an encore on tour last year. Not sure if she is still doing that.

Loved this! Thank you so much. Could you look at other performances of Lea’s? Maybe her 10th anniversary rendition of “On My Own”, or her singing “A Whole New World” or “Burn” (from Hamilton)?
Thank you so much again :)

Have you heard Superfruit's (Mitch & Scott from Pentatonix) version of this? I believe Mitch sings it in the original key.

Excellent excellent excellent Dr Dan!!! Thanks so much!
Loved hearing this analysis of Lea's distinctive performance of a very very challenging song... especially noting how she transitions the voice to attain the heights(M1?)
P.s. From 9:01 ..that top note?
Dare I stick my neck out and say I hear her over shoot ( sharp) by only a couple of cents...IMHO!!
*Sigh* I will be working on nailing this song for a looooong time.😅

Thanks for the analysis Dr. Dan, very knowledgeable and, practicing what you encourage commenters to do, very respectful, of Lea's musical choices. Lea, I assume, would have to self-acknowledge that her voice does not go as high as others, say Sutton Foster. But that doesn't stop her from challenging herself with this song, so the slight key adjustment is the perfect solution. She performed and told the story better in her vocal wheelhouse. Regarding your comment about that one particular potentially missed note, I concur with your assessment of it, but that's probably nitpicking of us. if that's the only 'flaw' a singer has in that killer song, that's quite enviable. She did sing this song when she was in her early to midstage if her pregnancy maybe 18 years ago, link pasted. Was it the same key as she in this more recent performance? ruclips.net/video/jHGCEqxLOGE/видео.html

@@DrDanRobinson Hello dear nick, if I may, I would advise you to listen to Morissette Amon. A 27-year-old Filipino singer turned June 2. It will change your life. When he sings a song he inexorably raises the bar and sets the new standard. With the cover of Rise up performed on Wish 107.5 Fm, live while sitting, a long time ago, it was just the beginning. It had so many views than the original, (at least 50 million more), that Andra Day's record company had removed, due to colpyright issues. Many vocal coaches consider her the last legendary singer. You will thank me, 100% sure. 😊
