    I like the moment the Gamilan commander launches the third wave of "torpedo" bombers on the Yamato after delivering the drill bomb into it's wave motion cannon's barrel. He says something like: "The weapon will surely destroy it. But I'm not taking any chances. Launch the fighters just to be sure"
    Why don't villains act rationally like this more often?

      Star Trek TOS pre-dates this kind of weapon in the second season. The episode is called 'The Doomsday Machine'. You can find the entire episode RUclips. Not bad for a show that was filmed in the late 1960s.

    -The overwhelming odds Yamato can survive was adressed as in 2199 the ship has something no other ship (as far as its known) has: shields.. this , as well as its way bigger energy generation (firepower) comes from Iscandar tech adapting.. wich is superior to all other races
    -If you think the Yamato repairs fast here you should see the original series.. one episode had the Yamato nearly ripped in half with her ENTIRE botton blown out (nearly half ship) and next episode the ship is totally intact.. In 2199 the ship every time it takes damage you can see repair crews next episode working.. and if you pay attention to the dates told at the end of each episode you would see sometimes those repairs take weeks.. one of them (battle of rainbow cluster) took an entire month in a drydock to repair.
    -Crew loses are similar to the old series.. but in the old series Yamato had barelly 116 crew.. now she has 1000 crew.. so even similar casualties she still has about 950 at the end
    -Episode 25 was to adress directly the last episode of the original series where Dessler boarded Yamato..and its much better writen and adressed here ...specially concerning the future.
    -Yamato uses an OMC (organic matter converter) wich works roughly like an Startrek replicator: converts biomass into edible food ... thats what keeps then supplied as long as they dont have much loses or damage.. at one point the OMC breaks down and they need to stop in a planet to temporaly resuply until the OMC is fixed.. as for ammo they dont use much as their main weapons is the energy based shock canons.. they can fire 18" shells (wich they do) but not much of those are expend.. and while fighters use regular ammo its easy that the Yamato carries enought for the trip (as any normal carrier) as the fighters only shorty like 4 or 5 times in the entire trip
    -About Gamilon loses the show do handles them.. Ditz didnt wanted to directly ally with the humans because the huge loses at the battle of Ballun. and in the later movie "oddysey of the star voyaging ark" its more directly dealt with
    -the great thing about soundtrack and effects is that nearly ALL the music (save for a couple of pieces) and nearly ALL sound effects come directly from the original series.. but wiselly done .. it fits perfectly

      When it comes to shields, we actually know about one other shielded ship class (despite it's never said): the Zoelguut class dreadnought. In one scene, Domelaze deflected barrage of Yamato's antimatter cannons, which isn't possible with armor, because contact of armor and positrons would result in anihillation, so at least frontal shield is installed on Zoelguuts, the bigger ship also most likely has bigger geschtam engine, so it has the energy production for wave motion shield.
      Also, with Gamilas technological superiority to Earth, I expect shield to be on tachyon powered Deusura II ( but yes, we can't learn anyting about ship which got destroyed before engaging in any real battle, where it cold use shields ).

    • @MegaPlayerXxX
      @MegaPlayerXxX 6 лет назад +19

      Amen brother.
      People tend to forget that the journey actually took a YEAR and there were 26 episodes, so there was enough time to do repairs between each of them.

    • @failedexperiment9073
      @failedexperiment9073 5 лет назад +1

      Sanctuary 2199 Shock cannons are anti-matter weapons, you can't deflect them with armor made of normal matter, science is very clear here, armor would just explode on contact. And if you look closely on the scene, where the beam is deflected, you can clearly see a forcefield on Domelaze's bow blocking Yamato's beam, which supports my point. And if I may talk about your claim, that Gamilas are not familiar with shield technology, I can prove you wrong there too. In the episode, where the Yamato is attacked by a telepath, Kodai defeats the projection by sealing it inside wave motion engine using internal wave motion shield. The attacker, even despite the fact she's not technician or scientist, correctly identifies the technology, which means that shields are commonly known in the Gamilas empire, they just don't use them very often.

    • @failedexperiment9073
      @failedexperiment9073 5 лет назад +1

      @@Sanctuary-lx3xx Yamato's shields actually were active during the raid on Balun, there just wasn't any scene showing their activation, just the moment they got breached. The blue glow around the impact points is visible.
      Anyways, I agree, it's a shame we never truly got to see Zoelguuts in all their glory and also that they're underequipped for their size (enough heavy firepower, but they desperatly need more torpedo launchers, point defence grid and mayabe a hangar bay), just imagine how fearsome (and beautiful) could be a properly designed Mk.2 variant.

    4:30 You're wondering where they are getting all of those supplies. OMCS: Omni Manufactuing and Construction System. Wave Motion Engine was not the only peace of tech Iscandar gave Earth. Most of the tech on Yamato is either alien origin or a mixture of Earth tech and Iscandarian. Because the wave motion engine is basically a quantum zero point energy converter, it has unlimited power as a primary energy source. OMCS is basically a Star Trek replicator taking energy and creating matter in raw materials then building the part, the ship basically can make anything it needs so long as the OMCS is working. They even had an episode where it was off line and they had to rely on emergency rations until it was repaired. Apparently they keep those parts on hand.

    It is shocking to me how badly Voyager Entertainment has botched the western distribution of Yamato 2199. As of August 2014 they completely stopped all sales of DVD/Blurays in North America of not only this series, but EVERY incarnation of Space Battleship Yamato. It's as though they don't want anyone outside of Japan to see the series anymore.

      +Under The Scope Reviews If you like Yamato, based on how you describe it, i would recommend the Cresta/Banner of the stars franchise. It has a similiar focus on the character and world-building, As well as the grand scope and a very deft eye for strategy in space combat. Also the main duo is some of animes best pairings, with neither being OP or a plot device to any extent.

    • @Juice-chan
      @Juice-chan 6 лет назад +4

      Yep those repair and maintenence parts happened over weeks off screen. So if you would give them the ratio of screentime they took in the 1 year trip you would see half of the time a ship that is under repair.
      And they had 1000 crew members and lost I guess around 200-300 people.

      In the original show, there's a scene early on where they use a robotic assembler to create an entire fighter jet from scratch in the span of a few minutes. It even applies the paint job.
      I assume in 2199 that the Yamato has a similar machine on board which is capable of constructing anything they could need, from vehicles to hull plating to guns/ammo. With that sort of tech at their disposal, it's a little more believable (though still mighty impressive) to repair the ship in a couple weeks between battles as long as they have raw resources (which should be plentiful among asteroid belts).

    • @IndianaJoe0321

      When Star Wars came out in 1977, there were accusations that George Lucas had spent time.in Japan, seen the space opera called Space Battleship Yamato, and lifted some ideas from the series.
      One can certainly see the similarities between IQ-9 & R2D2, as well as the planet-destroying weapons Wave Motion Gun/Death Star. Even the apparent racism between the Gamilas & humans can be seen in the Star Wars' Empire, where things are reversed. In the Empire, humans are the majority whilst aliens (such as Thrawn) are scarcely seen.
      The astute viewer further can recognize the similarities in the current "Rise of Skywalker" when the Star Destroyers each appeared with their own respective planet-destroying weapon.

    Loved this show. It was so unashamed in it's naval aesthetic (the "dimensional submarine" attests to that), and even though I never saw the original, or much old sci fi, it made me nostalgic anyway. Even if, yeah, the threats to the Yamato became a bit hard to take seriously after they'd plown through a fleet of 10.000 Gamillian ships with almost no effort (to be fair, they didn't blow all of them up, but they never had a problem) And yet when drama requires it, a single ship is suddenly supposed to be a threat. Still, I enjoyed the anime immensely.Does anyone know any good anime like this one, preferably just a little more realistically grounded? I know of Legend of Galactic heroes, but while the story was nice, the presentation was a bit too stilted and the visual badly needed a 2199-like update. Anyone have any recommendations? (Other than praying that some Anime producer picks up a Honor Harrington book by chance and decides to adapt it. C'mon, this needs to happen! Nimitz looks like he walked out of an anime anyway. Plus, the longlivity treatments that make people look much younger that they are will finally justify a starship that looks like it's crewed by high schoolers.)

    • @failedexperiment9073

      About that battle on Balun, Gamilas ships were extremely close to each other and Yamato's shield at max power deflects positrons instead of absorbing them, so it can take more damage and if lucky, send beam on an enemy ship. Because of this many ships refused to fire to don't damage allied vessels and Zoellick instead of fixing the problem sent nearby ships even closer to Yamato, so much more ships refused to fire. Gamilas ships are are very powerful if deployed in well commanded groups, but only very few admirals in the empire are real commanders and their potencial is usually wasted, so Yamato won even battles it wasn't supposed to win.
      At the end, Zoellick lost because of his ego not only many ships, but also Balun with stargate network.

    The original series does introduce a machine that can create anything they want, and even show a demonstration. It would not be farfetched to say that their ability to create the necessary replacement parts for the ship's repair work is explained, had they explained it in the remake.
    The remake did talk about the technology they used to create things such as food... where they advise that you don't want to know what the resource is. xD

    This series was excellent in most cases. If anyone is new to the series never seen before, it's a must watch and done very well. But I want to warn the die hard fans of this show....if you are a Desslar/Desslok fan, you may be disappointed, as I was. Unlike the Desslok of old, this Desslok has no care or regard for his people and would kill them in a heartbeat. They both love Starsha, but this new Desslok is so nuts over her, that everything he did was to try and gain her interest, while the original Desslok created this war as a new home for his people that were living on a dying planet. I felt this change did great injustice to the character, turning him into a more 2 dimensional obessed bad guy than the more developed character of old who was a balance of good and bad making him feel more realistic. Desslok was my favorite character and watching what they did to him I felt disappointment and injustice to the character. But he was the only problem I had. I used to like Lysis as well, and I really loved what they did with him. They fleshed him out much more than before.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention Captain Harlock at the end of the video. It's another one of Leiji Matsumoto's many works and it's even better than Yamato, especially the 2nd series and the Endless Odyssey mini. Also worth mentioning by the same author are Galaxy Express, Galaxy Railways and Gun Frontier, a western-flavored adaptation of Cpt. Harlock.

    Just some context. The have a energy matter replicator for making parts and food. As far as facing impossible odds is a common trope in Yamato this goes back to WW II and the last voyage of the Japanese fleet and the IJN Yamato in particular. As to some of the Gamilas generals Goer in particular comes from having that one boss that has the same personality as Goer. In regards to animation the original had some very cutting edge styles (dated by today's standards) but still worth a watch with the understanding that it was geared to a younger audience, it also had fan service but was edited out in Starblazers dub. If I had to chose one it would be 2199 as it is more polished product with writing and plotlines. The original was supposed to be 52 episodes but was cut too 26.

    The movie that is, on RUclips the animation was agrivateing because it was only in Japanese without subtitles. Cartoon Network shows some anime like inue yasha last redout, ghost in the Shell.
    A real limited selection.
    Anything else is totally unknown unless you find online accidentally like I did but only to find out its not dubbed in English or English subtitles.

    Did you know the Battleship Yamato was a real battleship during WWII? Not only was it real, it was also the most advanced and most powerful battle ship in the water at the time and possibly ever. It rarely saw battle and when it did, it was sent on a suicide mission and it was so significantly outnumbered, I did not survive. Although, it took 2 hours, 17 torpedoes, and 19 bomb strikes to finally sink it. Seeing the original does not only seem significant to the history of anime but to the history of Japan as a culture.

      Yamato was definitely the biggest in terms of overall mass but she was stumpy and fat, she was advanced by japanese standards only, seeing as how they had access to limited resources. They did not have time to develop sophisticated radar technology or damage or gunfire control technologies. Her aiming mechanisms were analog (manual) so despite her massive range (over 40 kilometers) she could not fire over the horizon. The armor was outstanding.... again by japanese standards, at the time it was some of the greatest steel ever crafted by japanese hands, but thats all it was, steel. Compared to her american counterparts (The Iowa class battleships) which had guns with the same effective firepower and greater penetration, her armor was soft. Let me assure you it would have taken much longer to sink an Iowa class BB in the same situation not because of armor and survivability, but because of superior damage control protocols and signifigantly superior anti-aircraft armaments, but under those odds she would inevitably succumb to overwhelming firepower and sink in the same fashion. However, under those circumstances all of Yamato's escorts had also been sunk seeing as how they were all light cruisers and Destroyers, an Iowa would most likely have been escorted by 2 or 3 cleveland class cruisers which, and this has been documented, create an impenetrable AA fortress against all attack from the air. The Japanese found that out the hard way when they tried to sink 4 of them, not one ship was damaged and no plane could get anywhere close.

    • @williamnixon3994
      @williamnixon3994 5 лет назад

      @@angrysquirrel8816 While yes the Iowa would live through horrifying amounts of damage, I'd like to point out that the Yamato, being much bigger, wouldn't feel the impact of each hit the same way as an Iowa, assuming they shot and hit at equal rates, considering the 10,000 ton difference between the wartime fits of each vessel; especially since the Iowa would technically be a bit more vulnerable to penetrations through into the machinery spaces since it was restricted to a pretty slender build to maintain it's ability to fit through the canal. Along with that, ships wouldn't be angling their armor like what happens in World of Warships, as richochets would still do immense damage to the armor even if it doesn't punch through (which the Yamato shells would do even at long range, especially since they're about 200kg heavier than Iowa's shells), and instead of a nice small clean hole deep into the vessel you'd have this ugly, long gash that could breach multiple watertight compartments within the vessel itself. Realistically, in a one-on-one scenario, both ships would most likely sink the other nine times out of ten, with the Yamato able to take gunfire simply due to it's sheer size while the superior DC of the Iowa would keep her fighting even after taking more damage than most other ships had any ability to stay afloat from. It's really a coin toss when both ships can hit the other, otherwise the Iowa would have range and accuracy advantage well before the Yamato can pierce the Iowa's hide, despite the potential long range of these gigantic weapons systems equipped aboard the colossus

    • @angrysquirrel8816
      @angrysquirrel8816 5 лет назад

      @@williamnixon3994 True, but you appear to be missing the one detail that every battleship historian i've ever heard has also missed. Yamato's firing systems were almost completely analogue, meaning that a crew member, not just a member of yamato's crew could also be from another ship, must have line of sight to the enemy ship it is firing at. Both ships are capable of unparalleled firepower, the Yamato's guns had monstrous accuracy when they were aimed correctly, Iowa by comparison had guns that were slightly inferior in terms of dispersion (and no i am not basing this off of values in world of warships) but it had the advantage of one of if not the most advanced radar systems of WW2. Meaning it could aim faster and more accurately from long ranges. In a close quarters engagement I.E. -12km Iowa would stand little chance. However if you were to open up the range Yamato would have no target to fire back at, and with the extreme shell arcs that late war U.S. battleships were capable of the Yamato's armor would be completely negated. And I'm pretty sure we all know that an Iowa would stand no chance against the theoretical super-yamato class battleship with the monstrous 21-inch (or was it 22?) guns it was designed with. But lets agree on the fact that both ships were entirely capable of sinking the other in a variety of circumstances and leave it at that for now, unless you want to discuss other types of ships then im game.

    • @williamnixon3994
      @williamnixon3994 5 лет назад

      @@angrysquirrel8816 As I stated; assuming both ships can hit each other. I did not know what kind of fire control systems the Yamato had (hell I thought it had a primitive form of radar for FCS beyond 12km), but I'm glad to know about this now. On the note about the Super Yamato I'm pretty sure the Iowa would still sink it well outside of it's range since the Japanese had only -just- started coming out with radar-guided systems by the end of WW2, leaving it vulnerable to ranges it can shoot to but cannot hit at.
      As for other types of ships, I'm game but I don't know which ones I want to talk about, maybe a theoretical scenario where the Bismark had triple turrets instead of twin, and/or how it would've done had it been given better AA fire control?

    Well, actually since Yamato's journey is so long one can say that is why repairs appear to be done so quickly is because they are made them while off screen. Another thing is the supplies, didn't they collect a decent amount of materials at the old mining station. For ammo I think that the weapons are primarily energy based allowing them to pull the energy from the Wave Motion Core. In Episode 3 I think it was stated they couldn't fire the shock cannons until they could bypass the system. As for man power, you got me there. Unless of course the surviving enlisted pulled double duty.

    On the return of Dessler: The murder attempt at Dessler is a clear reference to operation Valkyrie, the attack on Hitler's life. As for other events in the show and characters for that matter. General Domel being a clear reference to Erwin Rommel, the desert fox even almost being excecuted (irl he was forced to commit suicide )
    So in my opinion it was not a useless 'bring back the character to life' but a quite nifty historical reference.

    I found Star blazers in 78/79 when it first aired in America. I saw it on WNEW channel 5 in NY. I would watch it before going to school. I was already into Star Trek watching that in reruns and of course Star Wars in 77 and Galactica in 78. Then I also had Star Trek on the big screen in 79 as well. I loved the first 2 series Iscandar and the Comet Empire. I loved the series. It was fun to see in 1983 Star Trek the search for Spock sort of borrow stealing the Yamato when they stole the Enterprise and it sort of plays the same way with both ships escaping from dock and the attempt to stop them by an advanced starship. Then later in the 80s in the TNG episode best of both worlds the Enterprise uses its deflector dish as a weapon and the writers wrote as an homage to Star blazers. It even powers up like the wave motion gun. From Star blazers I found battle of the planets. When I got to college in the late 80s I found the Star blazer movies, the bolar wars, Gatchamon, Bubblegum Crisis, the dirty pair, robotech etc

They actually made all details to point in 2199, even when it is just a line or two. How the hell do I still remember this after all these years. BTW all motivations for the precious war were revealed in 2202.
    Last but not least, Kodai older-brother is that one background character that made everyone else looks like losers. Don't ask me why, but you should look into it.

    But it did have an automated fabricator that built just everything the ship needed, up to including star fighters.
    My love affair with Yamato started with series two, when I saw attitude thrusters, and course settings in three dimensions. Plus references to Mars in an interstellar setting - that was a novelty in the 70s and 80s.
    Plus Captain Gideon and the Battle of Saturn. One of the high marks of space combat, even today. And much, much, better than what we got in Yamato 2202.

Dessler in the original was the ONLY character to die and come back later and he has done that more than enough times during the duration of it , as for the repairs ? they probably do it off screen as days and months pass between episodes and we see some repairs half done during other episodes and thats all the original , and dont get me started on the Bridge Number 3 memes
