    I'm old enough to have seen the original as a kid (in the USA, as "STAR BLAZERS") and loved it (My favorite TV show, ever. No lie. Ever. Formative, fun and sad, heroic and epic. I never stopped thinking of it.). And then saw the new one (even the live-action foreign movie), and that's even better. It's still my Number 1 fandom, over STAR WARS, and STAR TREK, too.

    Something that the original does much better than the remake is the motivation of the Gamilas. The Desler's motivation in the original was:" I have to save my race, our planet is dying", while in the remake it was: "I want to conquer the galaxy"

    • @GenesicKaiser
      @GenesicKaiser 6 лет назад +19

      Yeah, they fucked up Desler hard. He became my favorite character in the original because of just how damn complex he was. He was a true leader who genuinely cared for his race, his home world and his races survival. He wasn't perfect as he was willing to kill even his subordinates or allies or even nuke planets if they showed any form of disloyalty or danger to him, his race or his allies, but he valued those that were loyal to him. This kept building up with S2, New Voyage, S3 and Final Yamato. I was actually afraid watching S3 that they were rehashing S1 with a crappier story and making Desler a flat out villain who had learned nothing from the previous installments, but when I learned he did retain his development I was overjoyed....Then I got to the last few episodes of 2199 which I was loving until that point because of how fleshed out everything was and how, thinking the finale would follow the original, felt even more important because of how developed Gamilas was. But with the reveal that 2199 Desler was just an evil bastard who only gave a shit about his delusion of galactic peace and was willing to throw his people who served and died for him loyally under a bus, it just ruined the story and the suspense for me and all of that development and improvements felt more sickening at how wasted they seemed. Everyone was fighting and dying just because 2199 Desler was like 'Haha I'm a tyrannical prick who just wants to rule everyone because I have it in my head that my pacifist crush would like that; Even though she has clearly states she hates my intentions'. To me the remake Desler is more One Dimensional than the original, an ironic thing since that should be the other way around. This more problematic for me as one of the reasons I began Yamato was because I seen 2199 Yuki and thought she looked attractive and charming. When I seen her classic version, she was very abysmal, being very helpless to an idiotic degree (Why even give her a gun if she never even uses it!). In contrast her 2199 version was improved and she was certainly more charming and wasn't helpless completely (Actually takes out her friggin gun in case there is a nearby enemy, and only the events occurring prevent her from using it). But this makes things worse as well as it meant for me that a complex character was being reduced to a one dimensional character in exchange for a crappy character being marginally better; It just felt like a bad trade,.

      Villains who have motivations beyond "I am evil, rawrrrr" are definitely better.

    • @eruantien9932
      @eruantien9932 6 лет назад +20

      I'll admit it's not very well explained, but the backstory of 2199 is very much Dessler's moral fall. From little bits of dialogue you can just about piece together that Dessler used to be something of an idealist, gathering his people together to save them from a dying world, leading them into a hostile galaxy - but power corrupts, and Dessler, with the best of intentions, had seized absolute power. Look at how Starsha acts during their hologram call; she's practically crushed by grief for the loss of the man she loved, the Abelt Dessler of old, and for the pain he's brought to so many people. The saviour became a tyrant and a warmonger of the worst sort.
      And only after his moral fall did Garmillan scouts encounter Earth.

    A common misconception of the wave motion gun is that the goggles were for safety purposes. Since the ship could simply deploy shutters over the windows, those glasses were 120% for looking cool while shooting a big f**k all gun.

      But even the new one pronounced it differently than I've mostly heard over the years.
      Star Blazers aired in the US when I was eight years old. I loved it. But I watched it again recently and I couldn't believe how bad it was. I swear, nobody knew anything about space in the 70's. Which is ironic since that was the "space age". But then I watched the NEW series and WOW was I impressed! It fueled my nostalgia while also making it a legitimately great story. A++

    I used to run home from school to watch the original (American cut). I know it was much different, as I have seen both American, and Japanese cuts. The spirit is the same. As much as I love it, it didn't age well. Don't worry, this isn't an angry geek rant.
    Comparing it to itself is a great idea for a video. However, it's also interesting to compare Yamato, and early anime to American animation of that time.
    American cartoons were even more basic. '70s Anime didn't pander, like I felt a lot of American animation did. The plots were actually deeper, and the story arcs kept me coming back every day. There are also some good values being thrown in. This was good for me, as I was sick of Tom and Jerry by the time I was seven. Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Jetsons, and The Flintstones (in syndication, not that old) my favorites. Even those, we're pretty shallow and repetitive.
    Each new anime show that came to America was fresh, and exciting. (I'm talking about the shows that originated in Japan, and not anime that we received in the 80s that were 30 minutes toy commercials. Those shows have their merits also, but were written with American audiences in mind). As cheesy as Speed Racer was, it was enjoyable to watch. G-Force/ Battle of the Planets pushed the limits of what can be done on TV. That's why we had a nice little robot to tell us that "Everything was okay", at the end of every episode. I wouldn't say that used more imagination in Japan, I would say they use different imagination in Japan. I was drawn to it.
    Next time you all see an old cartoon, or old anime, compare it to other things of that time period. As cheesy as the old anime is, you'll cringe at the American cartoon.
    I still love old cartoons, and anime. I'm not discounting it, I'm just looking at it honestly. I still watch the stuff today.
    Sorry so sloppy, I just woke up.

I grew to love Matsumoto and his characters. Seeing the modern series really brought back the memories of rushing home to see how our heroes made it through the current predicament. As someone who did, I remember how it felt to wait for the next episode, where as now you can binge watch an entire series. The original was awesome to us 70's kids, and being able to see the differences in the Japanese and American versions also gave some interesting cultural insights. So for me the new one might be a bit more polished in some ways but it will never hold the same place for me as the original does. 4:35 "The Solar System"? Did you mean to say that? If so, I think you're confused.
    2199 for example starts with a battle near Pluto. Pluto is on the other side of the solar system. Pluto's distance varies, but we can say an average distance is about 6 billion km. That's about 40 AU (Astronomical Unit AKA the distance between the Earth and the Sun).
    Iscandar, the planet they're trying to get to in Yamato, is in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is an entirely different *galaxy* from our own. It's 168,000 light years away. A single light year is about 63240 AU. Or 9.46 trillion km.
    Either of those numbers times 168,000 gets big enough that writing it out get's troublesome.
    Suffice to say, you can not mix up the Solar System with an entirely separate galaxy. Even comparing hiking your way up Mt. Everest to just shifting in your chair doesn't do justice to the difference in distance we're talking about.

    Another 1 thing about the original is better than the remake is that the original shows how bad public order on Earth is as time is running out. Like black market, food shortages and other stuff when the old man chief in mechanic room talks to his family. Meanwhile the remake shifts their focus to Gamilas. That's why yamato is one of the few series that you need to watch both old and remake to capture the whole story.
    Some people may prefer the old show because the remake has some fan services (which I love it because it's not too much fan service), and the old show is kinda more tragic than the new one.
    But overall, the remake is still far better.

    You said that “why not just send the device to earth” or something like that and then proceeded to say “then we wouldn’t really have a story” it explains why they didn’t just send the Cosmo Reverse System to Earth near the end of the series... Well I know that it explains it in 2199...

    • @Jordan-Ramses

      Because the machine was too big? Maybe it was difficult to make? All she sent to earth was a blueprint. That was a lot easier. The earth only had a year left, maybe she didn't have time to make it? There were only 2 people on her entire planet.

    I love this remake and the extra attention it gives especially to the alien side. The biggest flaw with 2199 is all the fanservice. It was unnecessary and distracting. It makes NO sense that a female crew uniform would be a painted on plug suit where you can see underboob and (almost) camel toe. The male crew would be WAY too distracted to get any work done.
    Honestly, it cheapens the show and is laughable.
    The original did a better job of developing Kodai and Shima. There were too many new characters competing for screen time in the new show. Otherwise, a lot of the new characters in 2199 were a welcome addition and I like how the remake's story went in some new directions from the original. It kept the basic feel while adding new and intriguing story arcs.
    I love 'em both. The original has a few more emotionally intense moments while the new one builds a more fully realized world.

      Watching through the original, well... Yuki really did wear short skirts, and Analyzer loved to flip them up.
      I think I remember a point when he DIDN'T sexually harass Yuki and that's how they figured out something was really wrong with the robot.

    • @Jordan-Ramses
      @Jordan-Ramses 6 лет назад

      Yeah the original is really funny. Especially when i saw it when i was 18. I didn't get a lot of the jokes when i was younger. Dr Sane is always drunk and getting bit on the ass by his huge pig. IQ9 is always harassing Nova and making sexist remarks.
      The funniest part though is when the Yamato gets penetrated through the wave motion gun by a 'drill missile'. Its so sexually suggestive that its comical. Then the tip of the drill missile opens up and guys in white uniforms jump out. (sperm!). LOL. I watched it in a dorm lounge with like 100 other college students and we were all laughing so hard.
      The other one that is funny is the 'Reflex Cannon' Its soo phallic. And it shoots a white beam at the ship. The plot to every episode is: wait till the ship is half blown up and on fire and then fire the wave motion gun.

    • @batmanlaughed800

    Very good show indeed! Bob Samurai, you are an excellent host and you know your subject very well! Big thumbs up! Yes, I confess, I am a Space Battleship Yamato 1974 fanatic, who has watched the first (and second) season many times. It is a tv series that is, in my humble opinion, the best science-fiction show (movie or tv) of the 20th century (yes, even over Star Wars and Star Trek, though I still love them both) as well as one of the best tv shows of the 20th Century (alongside Fraggle Rock, The Singing Detective, I Claudius, Sesame Street, Star Trek, Wojeck, The Outer Limits, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Twilight Zone, The Rockford Files, Twin Peaks, Duckman, etc), not to mention my favourite tv show of all time (obviously). It was also a show that became a kind of gold standard for me, in spite of all its flaws (and there were many). Not only did I watch the first series from beginning to end in complete awe and suspense (so focused it was almost an out of body experience), but I would constantly refer to the show as a guidebook for writing scripts, drawing cartoons, inspiring new ideas, dealing with life and the universe, and above all else, blessing me with hope and courage to face the future I never had before. And this from a genre I had only a nominal interest in! So Space Battleship Yamato 1974 saved me from a lifetime of suicidal despair and apocalyptic depression, so much so, that no matter what the challenge, I will not give up hope, ever (just as Captain Okita/Avatar says in the first episode, even though Earth has been decimated by meteor bombs.) That said, being such a diehard original fan, what do you I think of Yamato 2199! AMAZING! Yes, no wonder you think it's a better show! I have only seen four episodes and later clips, but yes, it is still a major improvement as well as a faithful reboot and remake, introducing new ideas and characters, all the while keeping to the show's original narrative. All the technical and script writing flaws of the 1974 original have been eliminated, the marvelous technical and character design is faithful to the original but infinitely more detailed and nuanced, and best of all, THE ANIMATION AND ACTION SCENES ARE TOO GOOD TO BE BELIEVED! Yes, even bloated $150 million Hollywood blockbusters that bore me to death with endless CGI or mind-numbing battle scenes with no character do not hold up so much as a match to the professionalism and the brilliance of Yutaka Izubuchi and his multi-talented, hard-working team of animators and editors, trying to remain faithful and still improve upon the brilliance of Leiji Matsumoto and company. But hey.... Both Original and Remake have one thing in common: great epic storytelling, stunning and groundbreaking design and animation, powerful and innovative sound design, memorable and complex characters, suspenseful and terrifying action scenes, and above all else, Hiroshi Miyagawa's perfect and timeless music- the greatest tv or movie score of the 20th century. So take your pick! Heck, I even love Starblazers, still the greatest Saturday morning cartoon of all time. Which guess it means, I am a Yamato/Starblazers fanatic, who will always thank Allah for Leiji Matsumoto, Yoshinobu Nishizaki, Hiroshi Miyagawa, Yutaka Izubuchi, and every animator, editor, camera-man, cel painter, sound editor, and every Yamato/Starblazers fan member for coming into my miserable life, and giving me hope and love where there existed none before. So thanks again from a very grateful fan. (Note: I thank Allah, but I am not a Muslim and I am not inspired by the Koran, but by Ray Harryhausen. Sorry, but I am a film/tv/animation geek, so I do tend to gush.)

      Uchuu Senkan Yamato - date creation 1974, Uchuu Kubo Buru Noah aka Space Carrier Blue Noah - date creation 1979 (so over 5 years AFTER Yamato premiere)
      And you are wrong since Matsumoto IS credited as Yamato verse creator (writer + director of the original series), and in fact, he (along with Toho) still holds every IP rights for the franchise (including Galaxy Express 999, Galaxy railways and Harlock verse) that's why Yamato 2199is in fact NOT a DIRECT remake of the original series but more like third party production with Matsumoto's approval for it (and that's why they could implement so many changes to the overall story compared to original series).
      Furthermore, mentioned by you Blue Noah is more like unrelated to Yamato spin off series (not to mention happening in 2052) which deals with completely different enemies than Yamato series.

    Solid review! Growing up with the original I was interested when the reboot came out. I tried one BluRay for $80, after that one I bought the full set plus the 8th movie (taking place in the middle of BluRay 7) and it only got better. Best of the 8 (7 for the series) was the 8th Celstial Ark was without question the best, but with no frame of reference if you hadn't seen the show would not be a great first choice to watch first. Watch it after returning from Iscandar but before the ending episodes.
    I didn't want to loan out $600 in BluRays to friends so I found the Maylasian DVD's on ebay for $29 for the season. RUclips compression quality. Good enough for my freinds to borrow. The official limited run BluRays are stellar in quality. All with English subtitles.
    Season 2 is partially released with NO English subtitles, presumably for a later English subtitle version with US distributer at that point. Season 2 origianl series was much like the first series and quality. Season 3 used different US voice over artists that though SAG where really not very good and tried to sound too much like the first two season voice over artists. The later movies of the original series dropped in quality fast and where often fairly unwatchable. IF you get the Maylasian version (plays in US) of the series (2 disks for whole Yamato 2199 series instead of 7 DVD or Blu Rays) you get a 3rd DVD in the set Yamato: Resurrection (2009).... to say it's bad is to say that Earth is round. One can not appreciate it how bad it is till you watch it. No where on the Maylaysian DVD set of Yamato 2199 does it mention that it includes the extra DVD movie.... nor it is something to get excited about. IF you give up halfway through and go back to watching the 2012 Yamato 2199 and think about getting the limited edition BluRay... well don't worry, you probably made the right decision.
    But yes, whole heartedly recommend Yamato 2199. IF 7 Blu Rays at $80 a piece is a bit much for you, try the Maylasian DVD print from ebay for around $25-$29. IF you like that, be sure to get 8th BluRay or DVD or Maylaysian DVD of Celestial Arc where you get to see some more side characters and stories wrap up with some classic SciFi story telling.

    I would like to state that I think the potential love interest introduction actually detracts from what the original was building towards, which was more sympathy from the viewer towards Wildstar (English name).
    The Remake really botched the ball on that one if you ask me, but I think it does quite a bit well with the scenes it does handle.
