Some touristy film photography in Barcelona

- We went to Barcelona. What an awesome town and awesome people. I shot several rolls of film. Kentmere 100, Bergger Pancro 400, Kodak Gold 200. Because even my tourist photography, it's all about shooting on film. Of course!

Most RUclipsrs are about the newest gear. Cameras with unbelievable specifications. True! it's all nonsense! Darn photographers like you and me, who use usually, one old, great camera. Rollei, a lens shade, a filter and a roll of film. Compact, great medium quality, easily carried. It's a world of enjoyment! Yes, in this instance your photography slightly curtaled, for daughter and wife! That's better than anonymous images! Bravo! I love my Leica M3 and 50mm Collapsible Summicron! Filter and shade. Film. Very few! No humungous back pack from Louis Vuitton.. Bags big enough to sleep in! One answered a question, why he left a small leica lens behind! No space! A truly small, compact Leica lens.!! No battery dependancy, no chargers, connecting cords! Bravo!
Yeah, it's your connection with both the gear and the world around you. It's not about the latest stuff and showing off ...
I like your street photographs. They freeze the moment and let me wonder about the people and their stories. Ordinary scenes but extraordinary skills.

Thank you for sharing your experience of our beloved city. I live in Barcelona and at the same time you were travelling I visited Mexico with my family.
It is true that taking photographs on a family trip is different from doing it alone. It is also true that it takes time to find the places and compose interesting images. I took three cameras with me on my trip to Mexico: a Voigtlander folding camera for portraits, a Horizon Perfekt for landscapes and an Agat 18K for point and shoot. I still don't know how the pictures turned out, but nobody can take the fun out of shooting with these wonderful machines. The result will probably not be incredible, but at least it will be less similar to current tourist pictures taken with a mobile phone.

Glad that you enjoyed Barcelona. I was born in this city but now I live in Terrassa, no far. The shop you went in Tallers' street " Foto Boada " is the place to buy everything, film, cameras, and ancillary materials. Great place. The old man running it retired and that was bad. I had a close relationship with him. My father used to have a "Photo Gallery" in front of Canaletas Fountain. He used that shop for his supplies. Great to watch your videos. They are inspirational.

I was impressed with the Rollieflex images but most all all surprised by how good the Indiana Jones camera photos were.

I love Mexico -- and I love Barcelona. I totally agree with you that when you shoot on film using old gear your pictures are different than those cell phone pictures. And that is already an awesome starting point :-)

As usual, a lot to chew on, Ari, for which I, for one, and grateful. The idea of having to have "something new to say" about a subject is interesting. I've come to believe that the most meaningful photos come when photographers engage with subjects close to home. This makes it easier to go beyond "what I saw" to "what I felt."

A man's fortunes come and go but his blessings will always be found in his family. Nice work as always.
On shooting in a new place, you might try starting out to make the best available light portrait you can manage on the first shot of the first roll. You get the brain working and an idea of how the light there works.

I had been using Kentmere 100 with Rodinal1:100. The results were not to my liking compared to developing HP5 in that way. But I have found that Kentmere 100 and Diafine is a beautiful combination. The Diafine requires that it be exposed at 200 ASA which is actually a good thing for me. Beautiful contrast and gorgeous negatives. Also the Diafine can be used over and over so it’s economical over the long term. You might consider giving the combination a try with your HP5 as well. I have gotten similar beautiful results with Diafine and HP5.

Enjoyed this.. I can totally relate the difference in shooting with the family and when on your own. I did a trip to NY over Christmas into the new year with the family and took a limited set of gear/film so that the photography didn't get in the way of the family vacation. Cheers!
Indeed. But even then, we both, it seems, carry at least one film camera with us! 🙂
I struggle with travel photography and grew up close to Barcelona, in fact back then and now I rarely lug my Medium format and it is just 35mm. Practical and agile, great discussion and nice shots!
Ironically family pics are an important reason for photography, but that together with the nature of travel photography, are a bit of a struggle (forced pace changes in shooting). I can't print everything in the darkroom later.
I tried Kentmere Pan 100 with Rodinol 1:50 for 15 minutes per Massive Dev Chart and ended up with very dense, over-developed negatives. With a fair amount of post-processing (in Lightroom but the darkroom would have probably done as well), I made some interesting images but I think that I will try 9 minutes of development next time. My guess is that it will be easier to make images that I like.
They get pretty punchy. But that's exactly what I was after this time :-)
It’s an interesting thought …. What do I have to say about or within this picture? Not a concept I have given much thought to until now. The pictures of your family were much like those I shoot all of the time and I loved those - there is an intimacy I don’t get from most street photographs In my own work and for some reason I am drawn back to this message over and over- Available light candids of family and friends going about daily lives. . (Candids is used euphemistically since the shutter slap of my old gear is always a giveaway). But these shots are Laughing, crying, playing, relaxing. In the end I suppose I simply find I have have more to “say” about those people and situations than most anything else in my world.
Yeah, people I know, places close to home, activities I can relate to -- I feel I can create better photographs out of those. New strange things and I do not even know what am I looking at! 🙂
I was finally able to get some Kentmere in 120 and some Rodinal, too. The Kentmere I been waiting for about 6 months and the Rodinal for a year! My regular photo suppliers were always back- ordered, and all but ONE charged as much or more for shipping the rodinal and most of them would not ship period. They only sold for local pickup. Thankfully that ONE supplier stepped up and shipped me some rodinal as soon as it was in stock! Finally....rofl.

Hi Ari , i agree with you over your description of post processing, yes the film is only one part of the process, when you develop in Rodinal or say perceptol of course you get a different result. As I'm always learning from RUclipsrs it does help. Your resent trial with Kentmere is an example. (It would also be helpful to add the temperature. Please)
Yeah, temperature matters. Actually, it matters a lot. A few years ago I did an experiment: I developed Ilford FP4+ in +10 C XTOL. It came out super smooth --- but here, it was 20 degrees Celcius.

Fun video as always. Regarding XTol. I've always liked the developer although I haven't used it to push. It's not one of my regulars though because you have to make such a large quantity. Ilford microphone is good for pushing and quite punchy. I think you would like it.
I split my XTOL into 2x5 zip log bags and make one liter at a time. Breaking bad :-)
I considered that but was fearful of batch variation. If it works for you I'll try it.
Cute models 👍🏿. I feel like 2 weeks is an "ideal" minimum for a photo trip. You need time to visit what you want when the light is right.

Did you ask for a film hand check at the airport as opposed to having them in your pack thru the X-ray machine? With the lower ISO I imagine it would’ve been fine. Great video thank you 😊

Why use Rodinal 1+50?
I've heard 1+25 is best for midtones while 1+50 handles highlights and shadows a bit better.
I fogged a couple of Fomapan400 rolls because of the long dev times of 1+50. Oddly MDC only has dev times for 1+50 with Kentmer100. After that I got really curious why everybody developes Kentmer100 with 1+50?
I honestly don't know what has been said .... I use 1+50 because it gives me less aggressive timing and the results I like. Also, I'm pretty sure I could not tell the difference in the final outcome between 1/25 and 1/50 Rodinal. If the difference is how you explained then even better for 1:50. I want to get some oomph to highs and lows.
The only time I use 1+25 is when I push aggressively. But I don't do it often as other developers typically work much better in pushing.
I've gotten some really groovy results with Foma 400 and 1/50 Rodinal.

So Indiana Jones killed those cameras😄 You see a lot of werlisa cameras in the markets in Spain, it looks excactly like that one. Must have been a popular camera at some point in Spain.
I believe back in the 80's or so, this was a typical cheap point-and-shoot. The cheapest you can get.
Also those who don't postprocess probably don't agree with the idea of girls that underwent heavy plastic surgery procedures participating on beauty contests. Absolutely horrible people.
