just a retired trucker i only put out 6 duck decoys and a spinner my old school Dad only bought 1 box of shells too. So i make every shot count . We grew up shooting for food and rabbits for dinner too. great info on decoys thanks 💯👍👨🌾🦆🐇😋🍽🚚😎👍
I've killed a lot of mallards over 3 to 12 decoys. Especially in the timber. We would put a few out in the most open spots--a few in front and a few behind where we were standing. We kicked a lot of water to look like splashing birds. Some guys we knew hung a few aluminum pie plates on string to make a flash. When AOL used to send out those free cd roms, I would hang 5 or six of those with fishing line. The least little breeze made them spin and flash. They were really noticeable from a couple hundred yards away. Not sure if it helped, but we killed a lot of ducks that way.
I run a mojo ,a splasher and 30 decoys 24 big ducks with 4 on a jerk rig and 6 teal . I just run what I can fit in my cart might as well if your gonna push one lol and now I got my ten year old out with me makes it even better might just get another dozen lol
Hey what’s up. I’m hunting next to the X. My place is great marsh next to flooded rice where 1,000+ birds are setting. Last week birds will just circle us then go back to the X. Should I run a big spread? And wind will be 5mph… I have ton of wigglers and ripples. Or would you stick with a small spread?
Always hard to say on that. Kind of jusr have to try it and see if it works on the no wind days but if possible...Definitely best to wait on a good condition day and hit it hard then
Yeah, ive shot plenty like that. Just has to be the right day. Practice on the call and learn when to call, that helps a ton. With that small spread, id try to get on the x as much as possible. Small water they are already coming too is typically best for small spreads
Hi I hunt flooded green timber. 18 higdon battleship flocked mallard . 12 avian x wood duck. 12 ghg pintail. A dozen oddball brand teal decoys. That's 54 total I think.. public Arkansas wma.
Just getting into the sport and bought some decoys. My initial purchase was 6 mallard full size but and then purchased a dozen. Didn't realize at the time the dozen was standard size..will this make a big difference when putting out the spread?
Not a fan of big spreads, i will never run over 6 dozen. About 6 squirter decoys all wired together with 4 floating flashers. Not bad to carry in when you have a boat.
If you havnt you should do a video on cheap vs expensive decoys and are decoys in different positions important? Alot of the budget decoys are all the same position.
@@ChasingGreen For sure! That’s was a beat down and they where still coming when we left! Hopefully they will but you know it’s rarely the same one year to the next... but I’ll hit you up if we get them on lock somewhere this year...
Yeah, we had been watching those ducks to but ive gotten to where i dont enjoy the rat race as much on opening day. Sounds like it was worth it for you guys though
I dont know if I’m missing something or not, but any Simulated Wing Movement Decoys are prohibited on WMA’s and National Wildlife Refugees in Arkansas. Is there another public land hunting that I am not thinking about in Arkansas where these decoys are legal?
No thats spot on, simulated wing movement is banned in arkansas so anything i speak is either prior to that or in another state, which i hunt lots of states so this info is more general and not localized to a specific state
@@ChasingGreen 10-4. I just saw the spinning wings in this video and thought you were in Arkansas. Wanted to make sure I was not missing out on an opportunity to use them. 😜
By the time they hit texas unless ur hunting refuge traffic better be on the X, there pretty decoy shy by the time u get down here. If you do use decoys down here make sure they are super realistic no glare none of that stuff u can get away with a bit further up north
Yeah, its pretty well become a rule for us except for very specific times. Gota be on a mega x usually for dead calm days, dead calm and warm are the worst
The best duck decoy is a goose decoy. An old timer taught me that 30 years ago. leave the call on your chest and put out goose decoys for ducks. Big duck rigs Divers/Puddlers work well on big water. I prefer 2- 3 doz goose floaters to 75 duck decoys
No doubt, no wind is one of thoughest conditions for sure. Things have to be just right it seems for things to work on those days. Need to be on a mega x
I generally don’t put out more than 18 myself but I generally hunt by myself anyway. Good stuff Jake. Keep them coming.
Thanks man. 18 will put a lot of ducks on straps, thats for sure

Lol thats crazy man. Never heard of the aluminum or disc used for flash. Thats would be pretty awesome to see!
@@ChasingGreen that was back before anybody had spinners. A guy had to do whatever he could to catch their eye! 😃
Heck yeah, cool stuff
I'm pretty sure that if I tried that and anyone saw it I'd get laughed clean off the wma.
@@mikeries8549 not if you had a pile of mallards on the log next to you! 😃

Yesterday i set out 3 mallads drakea on a small pond. Tomorrow 8 dozen divers, 5 dozen puddle ducks, and 6 dozen geese. Every day is different.

i only have 6 decoys and one mojo spinner that i won, is there any strategies on using very little decoys, im 18 and on tight budget

No, i wouldnt worry about it at all
Fabulous information as always Jake... Blessings
Thanks man!
beginning of the season 12 mallards 6 sprig 4 wigeon with DP jerk rig...end of the season 2 pairs of mallards and a single only
Good strategy, will put a lot of ducks on the strap!

Will try to do! Thanks for the suggestion
you're big spread is a boat blind spread in tn. come put a thousand out with us in few months brother. great video. 👍 👌
Yeah ive been in on some if those close to a thousand, takes forever to pick up. Especially if they been out all season. All tangled up lol
Does it matter who's with who or to put same species together?
I sometimes mix and sometimes put a little separation. Just experiment and see which one works better
Any tips on how to hunt marshes attached to big lakes?? Want to hunt Lake Champlain this season
What specific questions do you have about. I lot of stuff i hunt is similar to that. Dm on insta if you got it, or fb.
Solid advice brother!👊
Thanks man, appreciate it! Good enough to get an invite if the ducks are doing what they were last year on opening day? 😂😂

Good thoughts! Thanks for sharing. I've started using the small water small spread, big water big spread theory myself.
Has worked pretty good for us over the years generally. Thanks for watching!

Same later in the season in arkansas. Gets real tough
Same. Flocked decoys and keep them clean.
I hunt at Big Lake WMA
You can make a nice fish hook pattern with 15 decoys.
Ever use a boat to decoy the decoys?
I believe you’re spot on the motion compared to spread size
Yeah, its pretty well become a rule for us except for very specific times. Gota be on a mega x usually for dead calm days, dead calm and warm are the worst

Nice, have experimented with that a little but not enough. Honkers are so expensive. Its highway robbery
I can second that! As soon as i put two dozen geese in my spread thats all the ducks went to. And now i barely run any ducks
18 Seams to work. But with no wind….nothing much works.
No doubt, no wind is one of thoughest conditions for sure. Things have to be just right it seems for things to work on those days. Need to be on a mega x
