Becoming a More Biblical Church: Romans 12:3-6

  • Toward becoming more biblical about the gift of prophecy, humility and church in general. Often the debate is over whether the gifts are valid today and we stop short of asking, "but what does the Bible say about how they are to be practiced?" This results in some reckless attitudes toward things like the gift of prophecy. Although this message deals with humility and unity I really think some important and needful points are made regarding prophecy. This is info that our churches need today. I speak openly about Bill Johnson and Bethel Church in Redding, CA. But I do not do so out of spite or a lack of grace. I do so because of a desire to help them and the large number of churches around the world being impacted by the same issues I see coming from that ministry. We don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater but it would be nice to get rid of the bathwater and to be a more biblical church.

      Same, my wife and I started out as ushers with two other people. We literally met and know everyone because of it. It’s such a great serving position. It’s now a year later turned in to us leading a group of about 20 volunteer greeters and team members. God is good.

    Thank you for this teaching, brother! I counsel other Christians on the "gifts" (among other things), and biblical clarity can't be stressed enough. We can "counsel" only as well as we
    1.) have biblical knowledge & wisdom to even share or apply
    2.) have discernment to understand real need and application of #1
    3.) have the faith to step out on to engage the body in ways that edify it
    I'm always learning, as are you, brother. But I've learned quite a bit from you, personally. I credit Jesus for that. God Bless you!

    Sir, this blessed me more than I can express (without being too long winded, at least lol). The topics of fake humility, importance of embracing the Body of Christ, mandate for fellowship, need for PROPER prophecy, church/bubble pride, the tip of the pride identified...you are neck deep in a lot of my most edifying conversations for this year, and I glorify God for the affirmation.

    Mike, so much I want to say - another good teaching. You have been given a calling, a gift from God, grace, to teach His word and to do it with such grace as well. Thanks for the “funnies,” like that prideful hammer, and the non-traditional way to eat a banana.
    You spoke about “judging,” or “discerning.” Christians are often accused of being judgmental. I found a quick way to evaluate between judging and discerning - judging has the goal of tearing down, while discernment’s goal is to build up. A few times I’ve had say something difficult to someone, even bringing temporary division, but the ultimate goal is to bring truth, and God’s love, into a situation (James 5:19-20).

    • @judylloyd7901
      @judylloyd7901 2 года назад

      Jesus told His hearers to judge with righteous judgment; John 7:24
      The Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth to tell them to judge those inside the church and leave those outside, to God's judgment; 1 Corinthians 5:11-13.
      We need to use discernment to rightly judge. Sin within the church must be judged, for the purity of the body. False teachers must be judged, for the sake of their hearers not being led into error.
      Judgment must be righteous, not hypocritical, but we are definitely told to judge 🤔🙂

    All I can say is my experiences with New Apostolic Reformation churches and members, like Bethel, were awful. My relatives were part of one for about a decade (I went because I was younger and it was my family who were into it). It only ended up bringing extreme hopelessness because the "prophecies" these people gave both myself and my relatives turned out to be grossly false. When false (even if decades later) they like to say "well its your fault" etc. They also thought they were better than anyone else or any other churches. The "prophecies" were leading people to Jesus, but away and into pride and feeling like a special snowflake- they were always about the same topics- ministry, romantic relationships (particularly if you are single), healing, etc. None of them telling people to turn from sin or even looking closely like the model of what you would see in Scripture. These churches (NAR) have ruined my family's lives. They think they will be part of a dominionist "latter rain" army, and forget about the day to day to not be living in sin. It is really scary. False prophecy is a big sign of something is wrong. Going to their church and being influenced by false prophets not only made me horrifyingly depressed long-term, but also led me into bad situations. "Prophecy" in many churches is not judged. I was always told judging is bad- you are judging the person. I think that prophecy should be turning men to God, and pointing to Jesus and to telling people to repent. Their movement is all about future - foretelling (best guessing imo). It is dangerous to claim to be speaking for God when you aren't (even if it is a "word of knowledge" "wisdom" etc). Those should be judged in the same way as prophecy because its supposedly is coming straight from God. Oddly enough, in my 25+ years of being a Christian, I have really only felt God speaking to me externally from Scripture maybe 3x- and it was more of a directive (buy a person a book or bible, etc) not "x or y will happen in the future." In a NAR church there is no judging, they are overrun and endorse anything that is false, especially if they claim to see someone "manifesting" (i.e. looking demon possessed and writhing about) a spirit. To me it is what we are warned about in scripture- many will say "Lord Lord" did we not x y z?" Really. I think my family is lost and need to repent from being part of this movement. In one case, my cousin, who is heavily into this movement is dating someone and flat out said sex had to be part of the picture in their relationship. Another is thinking of divorcing their spouse because they weren't all they were cracked up to be, without any Biblical precedent for it. Another was into porn. A few of them lie and cheat to get free handouts. They all think they are perfectly fine and should be "ministering" or even call themselves such. This movement lulls people into complacency in their walk with Christ through false prophecies and false teachings.

    Mike, you are very gifted as a teacher of the Word and such a gifting is by the Holy Spirit’s power. Thank you. In you I have found someone that is willing to preach the truth as it’s presented in the scripture and not according to tradition or the like. The only thing from this teaching that I don’t directly agree with is what you said about Romans 12:6 and “if prophecy let us prophesy in proportion to our faith”. I do agree that we are to act on the conviction of faith in such matters but I believe that faith also plays a larger role in it. Prophesying in proportion to our faith means that we are to ensure we are actually believing in what we are “prophesying” and that our faith is able to share the prophetic word. It takes faith to receive a word from the Holy Spirit and faith to share that word as well.

    Can you do a more in-depth study on the gift of prophecy? Plus do you think it's biblical to seek a word from God from a prophet or does the person having the word come to you? & if you get a word from someone should it be confirmation of something God has already given you or can it be something you don't know about? A lot of people say if God wants to tell me something he knows my number meaning they don't need a word from someone.

    Thank you for your ministry and commitment to God's Word. I enjoyed listening to you and appreciate your shepherd's heart to see the church functional on a biblical foundation. I have a question and I trust you can help me...
    How should I think biblically about personal prophecies? A common scenario is a "man of God" is in town, visits my church then somewhere during the service calls people out or to the front and gives them a "word." The content varies from you are going to travel and visit many nations to the Lord is about to do a new thing. It's either "kinda specific or kinda vague and broad." I just struggle to think about these personal prophecies with a biblical understanding...hope you can offer some insight.

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  6 лет назад +4

      I can offer a couple thoughts that I hope will help. If the person has no proven track record then I would just take their words and consider them while waiting for the Lord to confirm this in some fashion. I don’t think you are bound to act on something when you are unsure that it is from God. The Lord knows the sincerity of your concerns and He can tell you through another source if He chooses. If this person gave multiple “words” to people then you can wait and see what happens with those people (and this waiting may take a while) in order to try to get an idea of the reliability of this person. If his “word” is just generic encouragement which is already taught in the Bible then there isn’t much to respond to, I am more concerned with evaluation of anything they tell you that might be life-changing or belief-changing. You can also test it with scripture (the best possible test) and to share it with a few godly people who have discernment to ask their thoughts (this fulfills the “and let the rest judge” concept)

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  6 лет назад +4

      I should add that if you begin to be convinced this man is not speaking from the Lord you should bring it to your church elders and let them know. They may or may not respond to this but you will have done your part.

      Mike Winger Thanks for taking time to reply. Not to think too highly of oneself is wise, bc we are just dopey humans who do all things through Christ which strengthens us anyway..
    John 15:5 I am the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: *for without me ye can do nothing*
    2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have *this treasure* in earthen vessels, that the *excellency* of the power may be of God, *_and not of us_* .
    Also thanks for pointing out that judging detail in 1Cor 14:29 , I missed it before but it's a good one to add to the apologetic toolbox re: false prophets, I especially like the emphasis it places on the audience of the prophets... God's outright calling (all of us) and the JWs and Mormons and 7th day folks to accountability in judging what their "prophets" say!! Unlike the OT instructions to _kill_ the false prophets... this one has a little more practical & immediate application. :D
    Thanks Mike.

    If we put prognostication aside for a moment, prophecy would seem more closer to teaching. However not as one teaches a basic task or subject matter. It appears that prophecy is more of a gestalt. I was listening to Charles Stanley this morning, and he made a similar point. It is seeing the long game. Their are many layers to scriptural truth. When you settle at the top layers, that is teaching. However, when you pierce deeper into spiritual realities that line up the stars of harder to get at doctrinal constellation, that presents as prophecy. I think Lemuel's mother was teaching him in a way that was more than just facts and figures. That's stream water.
    Proverbs 31:1
    The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
    She was giving Lemuel well water. The reason why futuristic pronouncements are prophetic is not because they are in the future, they have this character because they make the PRESENT and PAST meaningful by illuminating a distant truth yet to come. Again, it is a big picture. Knowing the mark of the beast is coming helps me to make sense of political moves in the HERE AND NOW. That is what Stanley was emphasizing. It is a wholistic understanding. Prophecy and teaching are also different, but that does not mean contrary. Many of the gifts have overlap. What is the difference between teaching and preaching? Whatever it is, it won't be night and day.
    Acts 15:35
    Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

    The classical definition of pride biblically is something to be worried about but a better word in today’s language would be vanity because pride has two meanings one I am proud of my son for the values he has is good the other meaning is I am proud of myself and what I have accomplished with the gifts that God has given me that’s another meaning but vanity is never good vanity is the negative part of pride when you think more highly of yourself than you should we need to be clear on these definitions like Mike said what is the dictionary definition of the word
    Galatians 6:4, CSB: Let each person examine his own work, and then he can take pride in himself alone, and not compare himself with someone else.

    If we have to look at the biblical trend of prophecy in scripture I think there is a case for saying it's not happening in our day. If we honestly look at the reality how many people can say they know a prophet? A genuine prophet? Prophets in bible times they did 2 things they predicted the future very acurately and the proclaimed the word of God. And as bible say apart from moses prophets how God spoke to them was dreams and visions, then in the new testament, the apostles learn from Christ and then the holy Spirit spoke to them there is no debate that the Holy Spirit spoke to them that was the reason Christ gave them special abilities/gifts to raise the dead, heal the sick, spoke in tongues ect. For affirmation that the Holy Spirit was actually talking to them. Now we have the entire canon of scripture that God wanted us to have exactly what is the purpose of the gift of prophecy today? When the apostles were alive they had prophets again they were needed wether all of the prophets words were not written in scripture it was needed full for that time because there was no canon of scripture. The bible has in it everything that pertains to life and godliness.....what exactly could any man say to us today that we NEED to hear that is going to make our lives better or get us to heaven? No man or woman can say anything to us today that is on the same level as scripture so if someone says that God tells me to tell you doesn't that go beyond Heb 1:1. If the bible tells us that God no longer speaks to us how he spoke to them back then, how can we say God told me? We cannot feel strongly that God is telling us something nobody in scripture ever used that expression they didn't feel it they knew beyond a showdown of a doubt. We today do not have such guarantee because this was never a feeling thing. When we look at the people today who call themselves prophets what exactly have they predicted that have come to pass if the gift of prophesy is the same and it hasn't changed which one of them has ever predicted a major event or even a disaster I mean anything at all and the world or even a city could say yes he did say that was going to happen? We don't see that happening, personal prophecy about God wanting to bless us that's all we hear from them which never comes to pass by the way. Look where the world is today Corona virus non of them saw this coming not one predicted this. So many prophets have prophesied in my life I have yet to see it come to pass. Look closely at the churches who do those things look at their doctrine look at their theology. You want to know why it doesn't happen in your church, people standing up and saying God tell me because they are honest. If we are truly honest with our selves we don't hear God speaking to us because he doesn't not like that. The holy Spirit directs us, guides us yes he inspires us, he comforts us ect but through the already revealed word of God. When Paul talked about the gifts of the spirit he was talking about the church on a whole the first church to now and in the first church all these gifts were in operation because as yet they did not have the canon of scripture. If we never hear from a prophet today is the church not going to heaven?

    I think it just means faith. God reveals himself to us. He controls our minds. He is sovereign yet we have a choice yet we are his elect. God chose us before the foundations of the world so he also grants us a measure of faith and that should humble us infinitely because it is not because of me that I believed in Jesus and am now being saved and saved once and for all. It is because of God that I am his chosen and called. But yeah it could be your way of thinking or both. In a way you did say that what we do in our walk of faith is because of God and yeah I agree. The word faith (pistuo/pistis) is different than “believe” (know as true) and I think you know that. Like we must stay “in the faith.” Almost like faith obedience. Our faithfulness is because of God. Not gonna say my view is the only truth but I think you can take the verse as just the world faith with all its theological meaning. Agree? Disagree?

    And here's a problem, if it is a woman with the gift of prophecy, many assemblies do not allow women to speak. Many, especially larger ones, only allow the pastor to speak, and no one else. The body of Christ is being hindered, not allowed to grow.

    • @snsmystic

      Bible shows examples of Godly women with the gift of prophecy, but they weren't granted priesthood or spiritual leaders of their family. Modern time would show women or children even can have the gift of prophecy, but they aren't to be leaders of the church - the Bible and Paul's writing is clear on that too. Men are called to be leaders, including spiritual head of their families. If women aren't the spiritual head of the family, then they shouldn't be head of the church. The attack on men and masculinity is to draw men away from their God called role to be leaders. If the leader is corrupted, then the whole family becomes dysfunctional as other members try to compensate.

    Can we now go forward?

    Mike speaks as if he has the true understanding of what the Bible teaches. No doubt Bill Johnson of Bethel Church in Redding, CA feels he has the true understanding of what the Bible teaches. There are perhaps 40,000 Protestant denominations who all believe they have the true understanding of what the Bible teaches, yet they all disagree. How can this be? Does God tell each group something different? Obviously not. Protestants claim no man is infallible so they have only their own human understanding of what the Bible teaches. They cannot infallibly know the truth because it is only their human opinion and they all disagree.
    The only way for us to know the truth about what God and the Bible teach is for God to give someone infallibility and happily He did, so we can know the truth. He made the "One True Church" infallible in matters of faith and morals. The "One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church" was started by Christ when He told Peter, "...I will build my church..." Matt. 16:18 NIV and there is no other Church. The Church is the "Body of Christ" and Christ has only one body so there can be only one Church. No man can start his own church, not Luther or Calvin or any mere man, only Christ and He did, the Roman Catholic Church.
    Without an infallible Church we cannot know the authentic teachings of Christ, only fallible opinions of men. We cannot know the authentic Bible because no fallible human can know which books are God-breathed and belong in the Bible. When Christ asked Peter if he would leave Him Peter said, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life..." John 6:68 NIV and the same is true with the Church, there is only one legitimate option. The authentic teachings of the Church are the infallible truths of God. Only the authentic teachings of the Church can be true because it is and must be infallible and the "One True Church" of God.

    Mike differentiates between Catholics and Christians when in fact Catholics are the original Christians and the Catholic Church is "The One True Church." The Catholic Church was established by Christ Himself when He said, "... I will build My Church." No man can start a church, not Luther, not Calvin nor any other man because only Christ can and He did, "The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church." All who want to come to Christ should come to the Catholic Church.
    Protestants say Catholic doctrine is filled with humanly devised teachings, while Protestants say their teachings come from "the Bible alone." Protestants seem to believe they can infallibly interpret the Bible while at the same time contradicting themselves by saying that no man is infallible. There are many thousands of Protestant groups all claiming "God told them" what the Bible says and yet all have disagreements on what the Bible says. Does God tell different groups different things?
    And how do Protestants even know they have the authentic Bible? Protestants who say no man is infallible still claim their humanly devised criteria can infallibly determine what books are in the Bible. But this cannot be true because fallible human opinion can never infallibly recognize which books are God-breathed Scripture. If God did not give the Catholic Church the infallible ability to recognize the God-breathed books when it put together the Biblical Canon, we could never know them.
    Happily we can know which books are God-breathed and what is true Christian doctrine because God did give infallibility in matters of faith and morals to "The One True Church," the Roman Catholic Church. God Bless.

      Andrew Bingham wasn’t Jesus speaking to Peter when he said “I will build My church”? We have no real knowledge of Peter appointing anyone to carry the torch mostly because the Church, God’s kingdom was established in the believers. Even so, if the Pope and the Catholic church was the one true church that still does not give them authority to contradict or add to the Bible. None of the early Church apostles went against Jesus teachings or God’s original revelation but the Catholic church clearly has.

    • @abc-eb7rq
      @abc-eb7rq 5 лет назад

      Yes Jesus was speaking to Peter when He said "...I will build My Church..." Mt. 16:18. Protestants should read the writings of the Early Church Fathers to learn about the Early Church and how it was truly the same Church as the Catholic Church and the unbroken line of Popes who have led the Church. And it is absolutely true that the Church cannot contradict the Bible because the authentic teachings of the Church and the God-breathed Scripture come from the same Divine Source. The Church did not add books to the Bible, rather it was Luther who removed seven books from the OT, which the Church had always included in the Canon. He also wanted to remove Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation from the NT. But only the infallible Church can know which books belong in the Bible, certainly no man can know by human wisdom which books are God-breathed.
      The authentic teaching of the Catholic Church can never go against God's original revelation because God will not permit it. Unfortunately some try to pervert the authentic teachings of the Church but as the continuation of Mt. 16-18 says, "...and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." If God did not give this guarantee that the true Church will be prevented from error (infallibility in matters of faith and morals) we could never know the truth with certainty but everything would degenerate to human opinion as in the many thousands of non-Catholic "churches" who all claim "God told them" yet disagree. Did God tell them different things? Without this Divine guarantee that God will not allow His truth to be lost, we would have no Bible, no authentic doctrine, no knowledge of Jesus, God the Father or the Holy Spirit or any Christian truth at all. There has to be an infallible Church or there is no Christianity.

      While it is absolutely true that divine guidance comes from the Holy Spirit it is not true that each believer is there own interpreter of the Bible. If that were true there would not be many thousands of different groups who all disagree on the interpretation of the Bible and the doctrines of Christianity. Does God tell different people different things? The authentic teachings of the Catholic Church are revealed by God and therefore infallibly true and the truth revealed by God does not change or evolve but gradually over time God reveals a deeper understanding of the truth to the Church.
