Years ago, a friend of mine who was raised Christian went through a really rough time. His grandparents raised him and his grandfather died. He decided that God wasn’t real. I sat out one night and got in a heated yet brotherly conversation with him about every doubt he had. He’d look online and pull up different arguments and I never had to pull out my phone for anything, the Holy Spirit just gave me guidance, instantly refuting every single point he made. And he never told me that it changed anything, and I wouldn’t take the credit even if he did, but today, that man is a Christian with a wife and a beautiful baby boy. And whether our conversation had anything to do with his change of heart or not, I am so thankful to the Lord that he would let ME experience that. God is so good!!!
Jesus is fake, I was a Christian for 30yrs , having an answer to a question, doesn't mean you are saying the right thing, the fact that you are the one talking to yourself and not jesus himself is the red flag 😅😅😅 salvation always have to do with listening to a man😅😅
John piper is so inspirational. I am saved and Love Jesus Christ. John keeo up the good work. Truly amazing. Since ive been watching your videos ive been praying all the time and reading the Bible. Thank you Jesus for bringing john piper into my life so much oh lord thank you in jesus name amen
Thank you Pastor John for your commitment to the word of God. On many occasions I find that in a sea of bad preaching there are the few great men who stand out with the truth. Your videos are always life giving and answered hard questions I've struggled with. Thank you for being committed to the truth and shepherding the flock of God with humility.
1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
For 1 Cor. 14:3, the KJV says "to edification" (instruct or improve someone morally or intellectually), "and exhortation" (to give warnings or urgent advise), "and comfort" (to strengthen; to invigorate; to cheer or enliven). So, prophesy isn't always glittery news. It is good, in the sense that it can benefit those who hear it, drawing them to the Lord, toward eternal salvation and entry into the Heaven to come.
I have had 6 people tell me they believe I am a prophet and it is just sending enormous red flags up in my head. What have I done to make people think this? All I do is correct my family and friends when they get scriptures wrong. Is it just too surprising to people nowadays when a 20 year old knows the bible? I never profess dreams or visions EVER. Which is why I am searching the bible and clues on the internet endlessly because I feel extremely odd and my guard is up too high to keep this up and I certainly need prayers. I probably quote 1 Tim, James, and Romans too much to my friends and family improperly.
@@ohnobo14 It seems you could have the gift of knowledge, wisdom, or understanding, or all of the above -- IF you have been following the Lord AND have been staying on top of repenting. If this has been the case leading up to the moments of understandings, then that would be revelation, as existing truths were revealed to you, as being clear. In this case, it is the Holy Spirit gifting you the clarity. If not, then you either got lucky, they are not very witty (if you will), or you are actually misleading them with incorrect information and neither of you know the difference. I hope this helps.
@@YoursInYeshua Thanks for your words! I believe maybe there is a bit of everything you said going on. I think maybe I do have some gift but not prophetic as some have said but I also know for a fact I have gotten lucky and have worked with some not so witty folks and I also have 110% mislead people and feel super guilty for that. I just want to help others see what we see properly-biblically and let my life be a demonstration of Jesus Christs perfect patience and mercy for those who believe. Man, I need to quite freaking myself out with false prophet videos, I just want to stay on the straight and narrow ya know?
I gave a sermon on Isaiah 6, and spoke about the significance of the train of God's robe hiding his glory as an act of mercy on a sinful people. Not in my notes, wasn't clesr to me until I got up to preach. That was the thing that a parishioner came to talk to me about afterwards. Another time, my mentor, when he was younger, explained the Holy Spirit as being like the force on his way to church with his sister. Well, the preacher spoke on the holy spirit that day, pointed and looked directly at my mentor and said 'And He's not like the force.' This explanation makes sense, conforming with scripture and corroborated by experience.
Good on that preacher for what he said! _The Force_ is an exact description of _The Source._ They even rhyme. This is not an accident. Be ye therefore wise as serpents, harmless as doves.
No. Daniel 9 tells of the sealing of vision and prophecy in the 4th kingdom (Roman Empire) which was realized in the 1st century. That ' sealing ' means specifically that ' the prophet ' -- the office of prophet was to end within the 70 weeks of Daniel. Scripture is clear. The intertestamental period ended, and the Old Covenant ended. To disregard the writing of Daniel is just wrong.
This is helpful. Grateful for his humble opinion. I struggle with the gifts of the Holy Spirit because of charismatic Christians. God was teaching me about the gifts and they totally threw me off the rails. Makes you not want to Holy Spirit. God is bigger and better then that. Very grateful for the balance God brings to the church. Watch the judgement guys!!!
@Rardd5 Ehhh i wouldn't say "those Christians" but all Christians of any denomination who church but don't seek God. I know Charismatic Christians who don't know much doctrine. I know many knowledgeable Christians who think Charismatics are freaks lol. But if you have good theology, love and seek God daily, and desire His Spirit and His gifts, then you're a powerhouse for God and a true weapon against Satan
@Rardd5 I've read the whole New Testament several times buddy. Get over your self-righteousness. Yes, God does guide your heart, but you also have a choice to follow or not
Thank you, Pastor John. This is very helpful and clarifying very practical questions about the gift of prophecy! Dt 18:20-22 "20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the LORD has not spoken?’- 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him."
But you need discernment and that's what I got from him. He's being cautious unlike so many people who use that detestable phrase "God told me." The audible voice of God? Really? That's a VERY big deal in the Bible but people use it ALL the time these days as a throwaway phrase, as if a buddy of theirs just sent them a text message. He has more credibility by being careful and not assuming that every "revelation" is from the Lord. There are other spirits out there too, not good either.
johnconway82 but isn't that being politically correct. If someone says that likely they don't mean out loud or audibly I mean if Gods very own spirit lives in us than His spirit testifies with our spirit things to do speak to that person call so and so conviction etc. now we have to word what we r trying to say a certain way.i earn so Holy Spirit not God also?
@johnconway82 You are exactly right. There are other spirits too. The person, who can hear the spirit, should also learn to recognize the voice of the Shepherd and not to hear other voices, such as his own wishes, own thoughts or devils spirits, that are trying to brutalize every possible gift of God.
@@oldzensoul he's just saying the name drop isn't necessary... its a bit theatrical rn. With the example of the disciples you don't see that going on in the new covenant. If God is in it it will manifest so you really don't need to in a sense force it with a thus says the Lord.. its putting a little too much authority on yourself and I think all ppl should be a little leerie of ppl who do this.
Nevertheless he does say its something he is insure of or not as confident. We must pray and fast and seek the lord with love, truth and he will reveal all things
This has been helpful. I see visions and have dreams about things that will happen and they do happen like how I see them. But I questions the reasons I see them and wonder how does God want me to help people with this gift.
If all of this is from the Lord, the best thing you can do is be encouraging. For instance if you foresee a disaster coming you can tell the community of believers you are with “Hey, so I got this dream about this storm! It’s gonna come, BUT we need to pray and intercede for the people going to be caught in it that they would be safe, and that lives would not be lost.” In regards to encouraging visions be bold about them and when they come to pass people will know that God is speaking among them and be encouraged and faith will increase.
Numbers 12:6 If there is a Prophet among you I will make myself known to him in a vision and speak to him in his dreams. Thanks that the Lord is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. The Lord always had a reminent. Shalom
We will need to have a more widespread re-emergence of CHRIST'S ekklesia/assembly model to see more new covenant prophesying from the members of the Body of CHRIST, where CHRIST is the Head and His voice can be heard through various believers in His assemblies/ekklesias.
2 Peter 2:1 'But there were false prophets among them .... ' Jeremiah 28 Hananiah was a false prophet Deuteronomy 13. Says to test false prophets Numbers 22 Balaam was a false prophet.
I thought that this short explanation was helpful: The Apostle Paul did not write “covet to preach”, but rather, “covet to prophesy”. The Apostle said prophecy is to be coveted above all spiritual gifts. Why? Because by prophecy God speaks by the Spirit to the church directly. Whereas preaching (more properly “teaching“) is second-hand. I do not refer to that which purports to be prophecy, but to the God-given gift of prophecy which has been tried and tested. That which flows from the Lord Himself through holy vessels, and which edifies the saints of God - building up the Lord’s dwelling house. Preaching may edify, indeed does often edify, but it is nevertheless “second-hand”. Genuine prophetic utterance is the stream of the Spirit flowing directly into the church, and speaks the living words of God. It is always authoritative, always clear, always pure, always unambiguous. It is God speaking by His Spirit directly to His saints. It carries those who flow in it. It enlightens the understanding in all who “hear what the Spirit is saying“ to them. It is the “Spirit of prophecy” that is “the testimony (witness - μαρτυρία marturia) of Jesus”.
I agree with johnc people use "god told me" for just about anything a feeling a thought... Read Deuteronomy on what god said about people who presumptuously say the lord said but in fact didn't say
Actually, I have to disagree with your interpretation of 1 Thess 5:20. I believe your interpretation may stem from the KJV translation, but it says "prophesyings" not "prophesying"... clearly a noun there, not the action of prophesying. See more translations below: English Standard Version: Do not despise prophecies King James Version: Despise not prophesyings New American Standard Bible: do not despise prophetic utterances New International Version: Do not treat prophecies with contempt
So often a word of wisdom (or knowledge) is false, simply because it's not nearly miraculously insightful enough to be divinely inspired; neither is it presenting a message that's useful. A perfect example of a legitimate word of wisdom is the prophecy that a famine would come in Acts 11:27-30. It was a word that came to pass, and preparing for the famine saved lives... But when people stand up at prayer meetings and say, "Behold, the Lord says 'I am with thee, and thou art with me, and we are together. So fear not, for I am with thee...'" - it's someone using vague, pseudo-spiritual language to pawn off that they're a prophet. And people do it for the same reason Pharisees pray in public: because we want to be admired by the synagogue people. Raise the standard and you'll get rid of a world of false utterances.
The Picture Of A Prophet by Leonard Ravenhill The prophet in his day is fully accepted of God and totally rejected by men. Years back, Dr. Gregory Mantle was right when he said, “No man can be fully accepted until he is totally rejected.” The prophet of the Lord is aware of both these experiences. They are his “brand name.” The group, challenged by the prophet because they are smug and comfortably insulated from a perishing world in their warm but untested theology, is not likely to vote him “Man of the year” when he refers to them as habituates of the synagogue of Satan! The prophet comes to set up that which is upset. His work is to call into line those who are out of line! He is unpopular because he opposes the popular in morality and spirituality. In a day of faceless politicians and voiceless preachers, there is not a more urgent national need than that we cry to God for a prophet! The function of the prophet, as Austin-Sparks once said, “has almost always been that of recovery.” The prophet is God’s detective seeking for a lost treasure. The degree of his effectiveness is determined by his measure of unpopularity. Compromise is not known to him. He has no price tags. He is totally “otherworldly.” He is unquestionably controversial and unpardonably hostile. He marches to another drummer! He breathes the rarefied air of inspiration. He is a “seer” who comes to lead the blind. He lives in the heights of God and comes into the valley with a “thus saith the Lord.” He shares some of the foreknowledge of God and so is aware of impending judgment. He lives in “splendid isolation.” He is forthright and outright, but he claims no birthright. His message is “repent, be reconciled to God or else…!” His prophecies are parried. His truth brings torment, but his voice is never void. He is the villain of today and the hero of tomorrow. He is excommunicated while alive and exalted when dead! He is dishonored with epithets when breathing and honored with epitaphs when dead. He is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, but few “make the grade” in his class. He is friendless while living and famous when dead. He is against the establishment in ministry; then he is established as a saint by posterity. He eats daily the bread of affliction while he ministers, but he feeds the Bread of Life to those who listen. He walks before men for days but has walked before God for years. He is a scourge to the nation before he is scourged by the nation. He announces, pronounces, and denounces! He has a heart like a volcano and his words are as fire. He talks to men about God. He carries the lamp of truth amongst heretics while he is lampooned by men. He faces God before he faces men, but he is self-effacing. He hides with God in the secret place, but he has nothing to hide in the marketplace. He is naturally sensitive but supernaturally spiritual. He has passion, purpose and pugnacity. He is ordained of God but disdained by men. Our national need at this hour is not that the dollar recover its strength, or that we save face over the Watergate affair, or that we find the answer to the ecology problem. We need a God-sent prophet! I am bombarded with talk or letters about the coming shortages in our national life: bread, fuel, energy. I read between the lines from people not practiced in scaring folk. They feel that the “seven years of plenty” are over for us. The “seven years of famine” are ahead. But the greatest famine of all in this nation at this given moment is a FAMINE OF THE HEARING OF THE WORDS OF GOD (Amos 8:11). Millions have been spent on evangelism in the last twenty-five years. Hundreds of gospel messages streak through the air over the nation every day. Crusades have been held; healing meetings have made a vital contribution. “Come-outers” have “come out” and settled, too, without a nation-shaking revival. Organizers we have. Skilled preachers abound. Multi-million dollar Christian organizations straddle the nation. BUT where, oh where, is the prophet? Where are the incandescent men fresh from the holy place? Where is the Moses to plead in fasting before the holiness of the Lord for our moldy morality, our political perfidy, and sour and sick spirituality? GOD’S MEN ARE IN HIDING UNTIL THE DAY OF THEIR SHOWING FORTH. They will come. The prophet is violated during his ministry, but he is vindicated by history. There is a terrible vacuum in evangelical Christianity today. The missing person in our ranks is the prophet. The man with a terrible earnestness. The man totally otherworldly. The man rejected by other men, even other good men, because they consider him too austere, too severely committed, too negative and unsociable. Let him be as plain as John the Baptist. Let him for a season be a voice crying in the wilderness of modern theology and stagnant “churchianity.” Let him be as selfless as Paul the apostle. Let him, too, say and live, “This ONE thing I do.” Let him reject ecclesiastical favors. Let him be self-abasing, nonself-seeking, nonself-projecting, nonself- righteous, nonself-glorying, nonself-promoting. Let him say nothing that will draw men to himself but only that which will move men to God. Let him come daily from the throne room of a holy God, the place where he has received the order of the day. Let him, under God, unstop the ears of the millions who are deaf through the clatter of shekels milked from this hour of material mesmerism. Let him cry with a voice this century has not heard because he has seen a vision no man in this century has seen. God send us this Moses to lead us from the wilderness of crass materialism, where the rattlesnakes of lust bite us and where enlightened men, totally blind spiritually, lead us to an ever-nearing Armageddon. God have mercy! Send us PROPHETS!
The greek is: προφητείας -> It's a noun, not the verb. It can be translated as the actual act of prophesying however it's a plural here. -> "Prophecies" is the best translation I think.
I hear a lot of “God Told Me” these days. Buddy, if God told you, and you tell them, they will know God is speaking if they Have the Holy Spirit. If it is from the Word of God (exactly) then you say “Thus says the Lord”. It’s simple.
I was hoping to find a solid, ‘hard’ answer for whether modern prophecy we see some people performing is actually biblical, because it seems unnatural and strange to me. I liked how this gentleman explained prophecy though.
Roman 12:1-2 that's how you determine what is from God and what isn't. If your fornicating and drinking and smoking, dont be deceived into thinking God would use you to speak life. Get your heart right. Then you can be used
Prophesy is building up and edifying others not predicting the future. The old testament focused on warnings and foretelling that were abused my mediums, astrologers, and fortune tellers much like the experience he had with his wife. So sad.
Why would new testament prophesy not mean telling the future or having supernatural knowledge of past or present (among other things). Agabus did this in the new testament. o just don't think "prophesy" means merely sprit led preaching. Love this healthy advice though.
Daniel 9 gave the timeline to seal vision and prophecy. This was to be fulfilled in the 4th kingdom which was realized in the 1st century. This was the end of the office of prophet .
Hmmm it's pretty obvious that woman that prophesy about his wife dying was not led by the Holy Spirit. Yes they are gifts and should be handled as such except when bringing correction or judgement. It must be delivered the way God hands it you. Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like FIRE? Do they not break rocks like a HAMMER!! The New Testament church are always trying to handcuff the true prophets. They will only listen to the (false prophets) that speak "smoothly" to their flocks. No correction nor judgment God is teaching me to be a prophet and He constantly sending me into churches to call them to repentance. It's always do with the love of God but then when they tire of hearing about correction then God sends me in there to crack the whip. Ezekiel 3:17-18 is all I need to hear from God. There are souls at stake here and only two destinations heaven or hell. I will no deliver my soul to hell to accommodate/pacify the church.
I like Piper. He's a great guy and wonderful expositor of the Word but in this interview, Piper doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that the same bias towards the prophetic that he insists people should not have, he himself espouses that very same bias towards the prophetic but just in a more toned-down, self-effacing way. That's sad because the language the prophet, Agabus, used when prophesying to Paul is the IDENTICAL SAME LANGUAGE employed by the Old Testament prophets. This clearly means that prophecy in the New Testament era CARRIES THE SAME AUTHORITY as prophecy in the Old Testament era.
I don't disagree, just would like to add that the early church did not have complete revelation, i.e. it did not have a bible. The early church had what we call the Old Testament or Hebrew bible and the apostles' teaching. The saints met in each other's houses. They studied the apostles' teaching, broke bread (the Lord's Supper), had prayers, sang hymns and songs, and had fellowship in general. But today we have a complete canon; therefore, there is no need for new revelation. The bible is complete. But the spiritual gift of prophecy is to bring to light the secret motives of the heart. Jesus did this very aptly with the woman at the well, for which she said, "Sir I perceive that thou art a prophet." I believe that Nathan did the same with King David. Nathan pricked David's conscience about his sin done to Bathsheba. {There was no adultery, for Bathsheba was an innocent victim of David's lust.} And to prophesy is to declare or proclaim what is already written in the word. That includes prediction of the future.
@@lucille7069, I'm sure you mean well but you are not advocating accurate Church history but rather you are spouting the historical/doctrinal errors of Cessation Theology posited by Benjamin Banneker Warfield back in the late19th century. Please take the time to read 'Charismatic Gifts in the Early Church' by Dr. Ronald A.N. Kydd to get a thorough, accurate understanding of the perpetuity of the supernatural gifts of the Spirit after the coming together of the Old and New Testament canon of Scripture. It will surely alter your point of view on the matter. Moreover, Lucille, how could Bathsheba be "an innocent victim of David's lust" when she intentionally seduced him through her heinous act of exhibitionism when she calculated the exact time where she would go out to bathe on the roof of her house, which was directly adjacent to the lattice of David's palace - a spot where she and her husband, Uriah, both knew that the king would come to meditate, everything evening, at the same time of day? Lucille, you must cease passing off your speculations as revelatory exegesis in order to avoid promulgate historical and doctrinal error, my dear sister in Christ.
you most certainly do test Isaiah's word. Deuteronomy 13, Deut 18, Numbers 5 John the Baptist tested Jesus' words and works by the preceding (proven) scriptures and Torah. Matthew 11:1-7 We should test everything by the word of the Lord. Including every book given to us (canonized) by men. This may seem to be arguing in a circle to some persons. Those persons need to think more about the issue. It's not.
Hi ThomasLu9000 I know this question is from 3 years ago! I don't think that Heb 1:1-2 preclude God speaking to people nowadays through the prophets. This is because of preincarnate manifestations of the Son, E.G. with Melchizedek, or the dude that Jacob wrestled with.
Somebody help me out. I was told that Piper is a strong Reformed Calvinist and that they are "cessationists," meaning they believe that the "spooky" kinds of gifts ceased with the Apostolic Age. Am I wrong about Piper? If so, how? In this video he even mentions teaching his people to ask for the gift of tongues. I thought that was anathema to Calvinists. What's the deal?
@@thedoor_podcast Thanks for that. I have always believed there was a much higher level of conformity among Calvinists. I am much more in Packer's camp. Would not MacArthur reject wholesale Piper on spiritual gifts, as he does all charismatics?
I think it might be because the gift of Prophecy isn't fortune/future telling. Usually its revealing a truth to someone to help better their lives spiritually. Often its involving sin in a persons life unknown to the person saying the prophecy. It could also be an encouragement of righteousness (like Piper cited in his sermon about the lady on the 34th floor). When people come to me and tell me something about my future I completely ignore them as graciously as possible. If I know them and have a relationship I call them out on it as it can indeed cause damage and the gift of prophecy tends to be one of my gifts. It's a wonderful gift and makes making spiritual decisions easy but it needs coupled with love and mercy as the gift of prophecy can make one appear very hard lined and narrow, unloving.
Actually, Will, fortune telling is indeed part and parcel of the prophetic office as revealed numerous times in the biblical narrative, cases in point being Samuel's oracle to Saul and his servant concerning the lost asses, Ahijah's oracle to Jeroboam's wife concerning their sickly infant and Elisha's oracle to Hazael concerning Ben-hadad's health. But, of course, the good or bad fortunes foretold by the ancient prophets was by agency of the Spirit of God NOT a spirit of divination. German sociologist/author, Max Weber, elaborates beautifully on this very thing in his book, Ancient Judaism.
The apostles are not called prophets because we are all called to prophecy. We all as Christians have a connection to God mediated through Christ and can prophecy in the same way as the Old Testament prophets. We tell the truth by following The Truth.
There are tongues and than it's interpretation of tongue. So a person will speak in tongues than it's only translated by some who has the gift of interpretation
The devil has a counterfeit for everything God does. They definitely do a lot of demonic stuff but not ALL of it is. We need to be careful not the throw the baby out with the bath water and pray for discernment and discerning of spirits so we aren’t deceived.
wow people can endure abuse from pastors every Sunday and never question the roll it necessity of pastors in the church. But a false prophecy from 30 years ago and we throw the baby out with the bath water. The attack on the fully functional office of prophet through discrimination and poor teaching is proof positive Satan's greatest fear is when true prophets return.
If you say, "Thus sayest The Lord...." and what follows is not aligned with the bible or is less than 100% accurate in its execution (not coming to pass as stated), then it is a lie and the one who spoke it is a liar and a false prophet. God has not become a God of 50% accuracy...... wake up people; stop falling for the false prophets schemes and fame mongers and moneymaking tactics.
what he say is wrong..prophecy is a word directly from God He reveal to His servant, His revelations..and those who have those gift is solely for the ministry of God, not mere sensing, and not knowing u have it, not confused..for those who have that gift knew His purpose, dsnt need to assumed, but is instructed by the Lord Himself of what to say or do..it is for divine purpose..not guessing and doing what you think you know, rather always what you do is from God's instruction.
Prophet here. In the new covenant, we're supposed to learn the concept of grace, which makes no logical sense. We're supposed to allow blasphemers to continue blaspheming and simply help use them to teach the true word of god in exchange for giving them more power and fame and success. We are the thorn in the apostle paul's side and designate apostles and we write emails to the president telling him how to not pander to christians. We also need to learn to fear god, like, the actual one, because that's what he does to prophets, is he puts them under tribulation while they're here on earth. Its essentially hell. Its no fun.
This guy is in error when he says god brings something to mind. That is false prophecy. God still speaks to those he gives the gift of prophecy. And we still says thus says the lord because the lord spoke it to his prophet for his people. (Christians are so confused because of false interpretation)
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. Hebrews 1:1-2
What does the bible say about prophecy? 1Co 14:29 Two or three prophets should speak, and others should weigh carefully what is said”. Though Paul is far more positive about the use of the gift of prophecy in church meetings than the use of the gift of tongues, he still believes prophecy should be regulated. The gifts of the Spirit are never to be made the focus of congregational life. Worship and the Word are the focus, and the gifts flow under God’s direction around the focus of worship and the Word. Even as prophets speak, others are to judge. No “word from the Lord” is to be received without careful consideration by the leadership of the church present at the meeting. As John said in 1Jn_4:1, Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Indeed, Paul wrote in Gal_1:8, But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. Even if an angel from heaven were to come with a message, it must be tested and judged. What are the standards a prophecy should be judged by? First, it should be judged according to God’s established, revealed word. God will never contradict Himself. Also, He will not give the same gift of perfectly hearing Him He gave to the apostles and prophets who wrote the New Testament and gave the foundation for the church (Eph_2:20). It is wrong to assume anyone perfectly hears God, so it is also wrong to put too much trust and faith in a prophecy. It is probably a bad idea to record them, and meditate on them. Thank God for the edification and exhortation and comfort prophecy brings (1Co_14:3), but don’t let it eclipse God’s eternal Word.

Well, the preacher spoke on the holy spirit that day, pointed and looked directly at my mentor and said 'And He's not like the force.'
This explanation makes sense, conforming with scripture and corroborated by experience.
Good on that preacher for what he said!
_The Force_ is an exact description of _The Source._ They even rhyme. This is not an accident.
Be ye therefore wise as serpents, harmless as doves.
I loved the 1st Thessalonians 5:19 reference hadn't thought of that verse great encouragement
Thank you for this perspective. This has really been a struggle with me
Prophecy is divine revelation It can only come from the Holy Spirit who knows the hearts and minds and exists in the future as well as today.
So true ,amen
Yes, God does guide your heart, but you also have a choice to follow or not
Thank you Pastor!
Most folks dont say they heard an audible voice and most dont. It’s something you “hear” or “feel” in your spirit

This has been helpful. I see visions and have dreams about things that will happen and they do happen like how I see them. But I questions the reasons I see them and wonder how does God want me to help people with this gift.
Rupert Wisdom I experience that same things...
If all of this is from the Lord, the best thing you can do is be encouraging. For instance if you foresee a disaster coming you can tell the community of believers you are with “Hey, so I got this dream about this storm! It’s gonna come, BUT we need to pray and intercede for the people going to be caught in it that they would be safe, and that lives would not be lost.”
In regards to encouraging visions be bold about them and when they come to pass people will know that God is speaking among them and be encouraged and faith will increase.

Barnabas Piper. Now that is a great attorney name (or judge) if ever I heard one.
You shouldn’t be asking a cessationist about spiritual gifts.
See more translations below:
English Standard Version: Do not despise prophecies
King James Version: Despise not prophesyings
New American Standard Bible: do not despise prophetic utterances
New International Version: Do not treat prophecies with contempt
Can you explain in layman terms
Prophecy that is from God is always uplifting…..
There are real prophets today amongst the body of believers. Every preacher should be a prophet or he is not sent by God to preach.
False.
@@a.kamileon The bible says it clearly
The Picture Of A Prophet by Leonard Ravenhill
The prophet in his day is fully accepted of God and totally rejected by men.
Years back, Dr. Gregory Mantle was right when he said, “No man can be fully accepted until he is totally rejected.” The prophet of the Lord is aware of both these experiences. They are his “brand name.”
The group, challenged by the prophet because they are smug and comfortably insulated from a perishing world in their warm but untested theology, is not likely to vote him “Man of the year” when he refers to them as habituates of the synagogue of Satan!
The prophet comes to set up that which is upset. His work is to call into line those who are out of line! He is unpopular because he opposes the popular in morality and spirituality. In a day of faceless politicians and voiceless preachers, there is not a more urgent national need than that we cry to God for a prophet! The function of the prophet, as Austin-Sparks once said, “has almost always been that of recovery.”
The prophet is God’s detective seeking for a lost treasure. The degree of his effectiveness is determined by his measure of unpopularity. Compromise is not known to him.
He has no price tags.
He is totally “otherworldly.”
He is unquestionably controversial and unpardonably hostile.
He marches to another drummer!
He breathes the rarefied air of inspiration.
He is a “seer” who comes to lead the blind.
He lives in the heights of God and comes into the valley with a “thus saith
the Lord.”
He shares some of the foreknowledge of God and so is aware of
impending judgment.
He lives in “splendid isolation.”
He is forthright and outright, but he claims no birthright.
His message is “repent, be reconciled to God or else…!”
His prophecies are parried.
His truth brings torment, but his voice is never void.
He is the villain of today and the hero of tomorrow.
He is excommunicated while alive and exalted when dead!
He is dishonored with epithets when breathing and honored with
epitaphs when dead.
He is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, but few “make the grade” in his class.
He is friendless while living and famous when dead.
He is against the establishment in ministry; then he is established as a saint
by posterity.
He eats daily the bread of affliction while he ministers, but he feeds the Bread of
Life to those who listen.
He hides with God in the secret place, but he has nothing to hide in
the marketplace.
Let him for a season be a voice crying in the wilderness of modern theology and
stagnant “churchianity.”
Let him be as selfless as Paul the apostle.
Let him, too, say and live, “This ONE thing I do.”
Let him reject ecclesiastical favors.
Let him be self-abasing, nonself-seeking, nonself-projecting, nonself- righteous,
nonself-glorying, nonself-promoting.
Let him say nothing that will draw men to himself but only that which will move
men to God.
Let him come daily from the throne room of a holy God, the place where he has
received the order of the day.
Let him, under God, unstop the ears of the millions who are deaf through the
clatter of shekels milked from this hour of material mesmerism.
Let him cry with a voice this century has not heard because he has seen a vision
no man in this century has seen. God send us this Moses to lead us from the
wilderness of crass materialism, where the rattlesnakes of lust bite us and where
enlightened men, totally blind spiritually, lead us to an ever-nearing Armageddon.
God have mercy! Send us PROPHETS!
We’re sinners going to hell but Jesus died so you can have eternal life. Repent and trust in Him only as your savior (not on being a good person)

It doesn't sound like there is consensus in the church on what the spiritual gift of prophecy even is.
I was hoping to find a solid, ‘hard’ answer for whether modern prophecy we see some people performing is actually biblical, because it seems unnatural and strange to me. I liked how this gentleman explained prophecy though.
That's because man gets involved. Whenever man gets involved in something divine, it gets messed up!
Or, simply put, "Covet earnestly the best gifts."
So sad.
Pastor John is a Reformed Baptist If Im not mistaken (correct me on this). It's cool that hes not a cessationist.
Why would new testament prophesy not mean telling the future or having supernatural knowledge of past or present (among other things). Agabus did this in the new testament. o just don't think "prophesy" means merely sprit led preaching.
Love this healthy advice though.
Prophecy is not preaching or teaching, it is a word of knowledge
Daniel 9 gave the timeline to seal vision and prophecy. This was to be fulfilled in the 4th kingdom which was realized in the 1st century. This was the end of the office of prophet .
Calvins prophecies are different than scriptures evidently
7:49, How did you deal with that false prophet?
I will no deliver my soul to hell to accommodate/pacify the church.
who is the ryan guterman prophecy book that John is talking about?
All prophets Union Called PROPHECY First Adam and last Mohmmad are prophet of God like, jesus,Moses, Abraham and so on 🌹
I like Piper.
Your right on this brother
Master prophet?!!..... probably explains your comment.
Master Prophet This passage seems a little vague to make such a big notion. Can you see all the issues that this could lead to?
I don't disagree, just would like to add that the early church did not have complete revelation, i.e. it did not have a bible. The early church had what we call the Old Testament or Hebrew bible and the apostles' teaching. The saints met in each other's houses. They studied the apostles' teaching, broke bread (the Lord's Supper), had prayers, sang hymns and songs, and had fellowship in general.
But today we have a complete canon; therefore, there is no need for new revelation. The bible is complete. But the spiritual gift of prophecy is to bring to light the secret motives of the heart. Jesus did this very aptly with the woman at the well, for which she said, "Sir I perceive that thou art a prophet." I believe that Nathan did the same with King David. Nathan pricked David's conscience about his sin done to Bathsheba. {There was no adultery, for Bathsheba was an innocent victim of David's lust.}
And to prophesy is to declare or proclaim what is already written in the word.
How to manage the erea exodus,,
you most certainly do test Isaiah's word.
Deuteronomy 13, Deut 18, Numbers 5
John the Baptist tested Jesus' words and works by the preceding (proven) scriptures and Torah. Matthew 11:1-7
We should test everything by the word of the Lord. Including every book given to us (canonized) by men. This may seem to be arguing in a circle to some persons. Those persons need to think more about the issue. It's not.

Yes lol
He would have a reformed or Calvinistic soteriology, but would part from Calvin on some of his other beliefs.
@@thedoor_podcast Thanks for that. I have always believed there was a much higher level of conformity among Calvinists. I am much more in Packer's camp. Would not MacArthur reject wholesale Piper on spiritual gifts, as he does all charismatics?
@@johnritter5951 I haven’t heard him directly address Piper on this so I can’t say for sure.
Piper missed it here,..
Just curious, not trying to start an argument. I was just wondering why you think Piper missed it? Just want to get more thoughts on this topic.
There is nothing new under the sun.
The apostles are not called prophets because we are all called to prophecy. We all as Christians have a connection to God mediated through Christ and can prophecy in the same way as the Old Testament prophets. We tell the truth by following The Truth.
Can women prophesy to crowds?

Prophecy today is charismatic fortune telling, highly dangerous.

what he say is wrong..prophecy is a word directly from God He reveal to His servant, His revelations..and those who have those gift is solely for the ministry of God, not mere sensing, and not knowing u have it, not confused..for those who have that gift knew His purpose, dsnt need to assumed, but is instructed by the Lord Himself of what to say or do..it is for divine purpose..not guessing and doing what you think you know, rather always what you do is from God's instruction.
