The Holy Spirit is recieved as a permanent indwelling presence by the believer as the result of the Holy Spirit baptism. That is why John the baptist made a point of telling people that the one coming after him would baptize with the Holy Spirit.
This in fact was a profound declaration because in the old testament the Spirit of God came upon the prophets and filled them but then departed for a time.
I was aware of the presence if the Holy Spirit around me and was filled with the Spirit before I ever recieved the Holy Spirit. The Word " recieve" in the original Greek of the new testament means " to take hold of". Even a free gift must be recieved before we have it.
When I recieved I had two altar workers who had already been baptized in the Spirit take me to a prayer room and lay hands on me and pray for me as I prayed for the Lord, fervently, to fill me with His presence.
Once the Lord answered my prayer and filled me I had to surrender the last vestige of my will, my tongue, to the Holy Spirit because the Word says that no man can tame his tongue( James 3:8-10). Man can't but God can.
So stopped thanking the Lord for answering my prayer and opened my mouth and relaxed my tongue consciously surrendering my tongue to the Holy Spirit.
Within a few seconds I felt control of my tongue seized by the Holy Spirit and I began to fluently speak in what we refer to as speaking in " tongues".
The effect was staggering. Never had i felt such pure joy. Now I understood why i saw beforehand pentecostals acting as they did in church.
Joy is being " beside yourself" you are so happy.
It was later that the Spirit showed me that when I had surrendered my tongue ,and He had taken control of it, that it had triggered the fillings' overflow, which is what Spirit baptism is, while at the same moment the Holy Spirit joined with my spirit becoming one forever to be an indwelling presence in me.

@@robertnieten7259 that is a great explanation and I agree 100 percent with your testimony. I sometimes felt the love and peace of the Spirit as a child and did not know what it was. I just knew I wanted to always feel that way somehow. It would come and then go. I was 25 when God brought me a great teacher who explained the Bible to me and brought me to church. At the altar I heard a roaring bonfire all around me. I cried . I was water baptized in Jesus ‘ name. After they fasted and prayed a week for victory over my fear of the unknown, I felt the Spirit sink in like a white silvery mist and when it hit my heart it burst out of my mouth with tongues and I felt a river of power and love and joy unspeakable. That was the baptism of the Holy Ghost and it has never left me in 41 years. It is always in me with peace and love.

Speaking in " tongues" occures as a result of the Holy Spirit baptism which is to be filled with the Spirit to overflowing. A believer must pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit continuously until God answers your prayer. It's biblically cited that having others that have spoken in tongues to lay hands on you and pray with you.
Once the Lord fills you then you must yield your tongue, "the body's most unruly member ""that no man can tame" to the Holy Spirit until He takes control of it. Then He confirms to you and those praying for you that you have been " born of the Spirit". He does so be giving you a new spiritual language that the English translation of the Greek calls " tongues".
Now you can pray in your language and pray in the Spirits language( tongues) any time you want.

The most important thing you need to know about speaking in tongues is what Jesus said about it, and He did not mince His words in Mark 16:17: "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues." Jesus declared that tongues is a supernatural sign that can and should accompany everyone who believes in Him. God does not give His children any bad gifts, so we shouldn't fear or ridicule the gift of tongues.

I, too, asked for this gift several times. God will give you what is profitable to your spiritual well-being. For me, and the way certain things bring out pride and arrogance, He has not. He does bring out tears when the Holy Spirit is present. He has also brought out laughter and short bursts of giggles when joy overcomes me. I long for the experience but as His child, He knows what I can handle and what I can’t. If I were to gain this gift it would be a sign to me in my development of humility and patience as He perceives those things in me. So I wait and don’t ask anymore. But I do desire that gift as many others do. What is sad is to walk into a church where you are looked down upon and told you are lacking in growth and obedience because you do lack this one gift. I experienced that before and decided that that location was not beneficial to my own growth.

The most biblical attribute of a genuine tongues experience is speaking a known earthly language that you don't know that can be translated by a native speaker of that language. Source: seeing a close friend of mine experience the baptism of the Holy Ghost and he spoke fluent, 100% translatable Japanese as clear as any native speaker could, and did not know the language. One of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed in my entire life. I've also known a pastor that was in Korea and went to a prayer meeting and heard a woman speaking clear, fluent English. After the meeting he tried to strike up conversation with her and found out, to his amazement, she did not speak English. This is extremely rare, but it does happen.
The genuine experience of tongues needs to be affirmed as something that can be interpreted, otherwise it is not fully biblical. The "tongues of angels" argument is a misunderstanding of Paul's hyperbolic expression (1 Corinthians 13:1). Paul did not literally mean speaking in tongues of angels.
Unfortunately the modern Charismatic movement has perverted tongues to mean "angelic prayer languages", meaning it could just be babbling brought on by emotions. We have to affirm the word of God and what actually happened at Pentecost. We also need to be very, VERY careful about teaching the attainment of spiritual gifts. They are received as a byproduct of a close relationship with God. If we ask in accordance with His will, then he will give it. But we should not put these things on a pedestal or even desire the actual speaking in tongues or prophesying. First we should seek a life that is totally honoring to God, and then in His perfect timing and grace, he will distribute what will build and edify the church.
Definitely not a cessationist, but these days, I completely understand why people are.

The problem is that that never happened and you know it. These kinds of things simply dont take place anymore. This has not happened since about 60AD. Not one word written or spoken about it since Paul wrote about it until the 1800s. Literally no Christian has ever said one word about this until the 1800s where in each case since the 1800s, the speaker of these other languages never spoke them to a person whos native language was that which was being spoken, meaning that not one person has been given the gospel in their native language by this gift and said one single word about it as part of a testimony of theirs as it relates to how they heard the truth of the gospel. These kinds of lies do nothing for the advancement of the kingdom and at the end of the day, only hurt it.

Biblical speaking in tongues is speaking in a known human language. Nowhere in scripture is speaking in tongues ever speaking in random incoherent babbling gibberish. Sadly, many Pentecostals/Charasmatics have twisted the scripture, misinterpret it & take it out of context, in order to justify their false teachings of what speaking in tongues actually is. If you were to do a deep dive study into the origins of the Pentecostal/Charasmatic religions of the turn of the 20th century, you’d learn how their false teaching of tongues & their practice of false speaking in tongues came about.

@Removing Veils Thanks for your reply. Back in '78 having no church background whatsoever I accepted an invitation to go to a church Bible study with a friend.
Before it began I noticed people going through a side door. My friend saw me watching them and asked me if I knew where they were going ? I told him no. He said they were going back there to pray and if I wanted I could too, so I did.
.. when I walked back there I noticed a carpeted room with low sitting benches scattered around and people kneeling at them
I found one off to its' self toward the back, went back there, knelt and closed my eyes like I saw they were doing. I had picked one off to its self because I really didn't know how to pray and wanted to hear how they were doing it.
After a few minutes I heard a girl come back there and she was praising God and thanking Him as she came. Then suddenly she started speaking in this stuttery sounding language I had never heard before.
Keeping an open mind I remember thinking, " That's interesting". Immediately upon thinking this I felt this presence approaching me. Usually with your eyes closes you can detect someone's presence up to about three feet away. This presence had to be at least seven feet away when I first detected it.
I could feel the power of this presence as it approached me but I also felt love so I wasn't afraid.
After a few seconds I opened one eye thinking that someone must have knelt nearby me and it was their presence that I had detected. No one was anywhere near me so I concluded that it must be God.
That next night I went to church again. People were nice in greeting me. During the service I saw some of them shouting, dancing, and running the aisles.
I remember thinking that they had seemed to me to be solid, sane people when they greeted me and they must be acting this way because they were experiencing something that made them so happy that they were " beside themselves" in expressing it.
I then decided that the presence I had become aware of the night before near me they must have in them, and I wanted that.
So when the altar call was given I went up. The altar worker asked me what I would like the Lord to do for me ? I told him that I wanted the presence I felt around me in me. He told thr pastor this and him and another worker took me back to their prayer room.
On arriving back there he told me to kneel facing the wall and start asking the Lord for what I wanted. I knelt, closed my eyes and started asking. The workers were quietly praying for me behind me.
After a few minutes I heard footsteps and then the pastors' voice telling me, " Brother Bob, stand up, lift your hands, and recieve the Holy Ghost".
I stood up,with my eyes still closed, and lifted my hands. I immediately saw a window appear to my upper right. It had what looked like those old fashioned shutters on the outside ends of it and they were wide open.
I looked in the window and saw this beautiful blue sky. Then I saw this bright light appear ar the right hand corner, inside the window, and it began to move across my field of vision until it reached the centerpoint. It then stopped and shined on me.
Right away I felt this warmth at my ankles begin to move up my body. I felt like my body was a container being filled with a warm liquid.
When the filling approached the top of my head i was thanking the Lord for answering my prayer. Then I heard the pastors voice in front of me telling me to surrender my tongue to the Holy Spirit I stopped thanking the Lord, opened my mouth and started relaxing my tongue as a way of surrendering it. Suddenly I felt control of my tongue being seized and I began to fluently speak in this language I had never learned. The effect was staggering. Never in my life had I experienced such pure joy in my life.
Now I was beside myself I was so happy. I led the way out of the prayer room feeling as if I was in the midst of a great celebration I couldn't see.
I stopped and faced the seated church members. Suddenly I felt such love for these people that I really didn't know. I felt like I was facing beloved family members of mine.
Lastly, when I arrived home I decided to read a little from the Bible before bed. When I opened it and started reading I was amazed. Suddenly it had taken on much more depth and I became aware of the Spirit that I had recieved guiding me in understanding what I was reading.

      @@robertnieten7259 Hello Robert,
I understand what you are talking about. Similar things happened to me also over a period of 24 years. My experience started the same time as yours as the charismatic spirit started in our country.
In the 70's David Cassidy overtook the frenzy of the Beatle Mania in England. One girl had a heart attack and died in the auditorium. Now if you boil it down, she died for nothing. People get hyped up in their spirit and anything can happen. People see what they want to see and feel mysteries. But it is mist. I know; having gone through it for nearly a quarter of a century. Over my now 40+ years of experiences in charismatic / "evangelical" churches I have seen things that would make a sane person run for the hills.
But then I started reading scripture under a rule I gave myself: count everything that I had been taught as doubtful and prove the truth of it. I did this because leaders could not answer my questions truthfully or reasonably. I started knocking on pastors all around my city (including my overseer in Seminary who holds a doctorate, and the dean of the college) and not one was able. So I began my own research. I devoured my Bible and read numerous books, particularly the old saintly writers.
If you seek truth, or if you think you have truth, then bear it up for scrutiny. If it holds up to intelligent scrutiny, then keep it as truth. If it doesn't, then discard it as falsehood. And if you are not prepared to do that then know that all you hold is dogma, not true doctrine.
Bad doctrine cannot stand up to the scrutiny of scripture and reason. Both are required to validate a truth. Try it; you will be shocked at what you find. But I must warn you: when you find one truth, it will turn your whole world upside down. But as you add to that truth other truths, you will find yourself more and more free (as Jesus promised). But this new freedom will not be as these churches give. They will not be mist and mirages.
There is much I can say on your experiences. But if you are honest with yourself and really learn to value your soul and the honour of God, you will seek what I suggest.
I wrote an article on my own experience of tongues compared to the reality of truth in the scriptures and the history of faithful men. So far no one has been able to refute what I said therein.
I would strongly suggest that you give it a read. You are welcome to challenge me on anything I wrote.

@Removing Veils Thanks for your reply. I read your article. First of all the reason that most people in church history were not ever known to speak in "tongues" is because the never recieved the Holy Spirit. They were told they had simply because they believed but that belief conflicts with scriptural accounts of believers recieving the Holy Spirit.
For example, in Acts ch.19 Paul asked the disciples if they had recieved the Holy Spirit since they believed ? For Paul to ask that question debunks the belief the believers recieve the Spirit when they believed.
On hearing from them that they hadn't even heard that there was a Holy Spirit his question to them was, " How then were you baptized ? They said Johns' baptism and Paul said John said, " John said to believe in the one to come after him, Jesus Christ".
Upon hearing this they didn't make a confession of faith they believed by what they did and that was to go down to the water to be baptized. Afterward they recieved the Holy Spirit confirmed by them speaking in " tongues".
The Word " tongues" in the original Greek is singular not plural.
Lastly, there is in biblical study what is known as The Law Of Repetition based on the fact that the Word will repeat something said or an event three times to direct our attention to an important spiritual truth.
Three times only do we have accounts of believers recieving the Holy Spirit and what occured immediately upon them recieving, Acts ch.2, 10, and ch.19. In each instance the first thing that happened was that they spoke in " tongues".
The scriptural speaking in " tongues" can only occur after repentance and water baptism as the result of the Holy Spirit baptism.
It is to filled to overflowing. Once prayed for and answered by the Lord by Him filling you with the Holy Spirit one must surrender their tongue to the Spirit until He takes control of it, " tames" it, and enables them to speak in the spiritual language that we call " tongues". Once this happens it triggers the fillings' overflow while at the same moment the Holy Spirit joins with our spirit, becoming one. Now the believer has recieved the Holy Spirit.

The true gift of tongues will build you up. It will open you up to the presence of God. It causes the gifts of the word of knowledge and wisdom to flow so that God shows you things when you pray. I received the gift of tongues even after telling God I did not want to speak in tongues. It was not something that appeared desirable to me at the time and I was afraid that God would cause me to speak in tongues when in public and people would think I was crazy just like the bible says they will if everyone is speaking in tongues at the same time. Mr. Piper is right, it is a true gift from God. I would never refuse anything that Jesus wants to give me. I do not elevate tongues above the other gifts and it grieves the Holy Spirit when we speak disdainfully of this gift. There are people who get their flesh involved, just like the Corinthians did, and they do things that cause others to reject what is truly a gift from God for us. And I would like to say that Paul never told the Corinthians they were not speaking in tongues but he did bring correction to their use of the gift. Just like any other topic in the bible there will be error taught about it but we don't throw out the message of salvation because some denominations teach error about it. We seek the truth and allow the Spirit to lead us and show us what he wants for us. God is good to give us this gift and all the gifts. Let's not be guilty of refusing something that God wants us to have.

Bigdee---THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE USE OF TONGUES TODAY. Please read on, thank you:
Bible tongues were a gift to the apostles and their hearers. Seeking this gift today overlooks its persons, promise, and purpose (Mark 16:14-17; Heb 2:3-4). The gift of tongues was the property of the apostles and those under their ministries (Acts 8:14-17; 10:44-48; 19:1-7).
✿ Bible tongues BEGAN on the day of Pentecost in 30 AD, fifty days after the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, just as He had promised (Mark 16:17-20; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; 2:1-4). God used the gift of tongues to magnify the apostles as heavenly messengers, in spite of lacking education, reputation, and human authority (Acts 4:13; 5:12-13; 8:14-19; 19:1-7).
✿ BIBLE TONGUES LASTED ONLY A SHORT TIME. Paul told the tongues-speaking church at Corinth that the Spirit's revelatory gifts would end (I Cor 13:8). In spite of their emphasis on prophecy, tongues, and gifts of knowledge, Paul promised that these gifts were temporary. Charity was a more excellent way of serving, for charity was permanent and would never end (I Cor 12:31; 13:8,13).
✿ BIBLE TONGUES ENDED BY 70 AD, forty years after they began, when the apostles had finished writing the New Testament scriptures and such partial and obscure gifts of revelation were no longer needed (I Cor 13:8-12). While Paul was alive the apostles confirmed each other's writings (I Tim 5:18; II Tim 3:15-17; II Pet 3:15-16). The need for tongues had ended.
✿ BIBLE TONGUES WERE A SIGN TO UNBELIEVERS. Today's emphasis on speaking among believers in church services, crusades, or so-called revivals is contrary to God's will for the gift (I Cor 14:22). Tongues were to convince unbelievers that the speaker was sent by God with a divine message, as at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-11). The use of tongues among believers misses God's purpose for them.
✿ Bible tongues was the gift to speak foreign languages without study. But Charismatic and Pentecostal missionaries study languages for years to be able to speak them, and they never expose their "gift" to linguists or native speakers of any language (Acts 2:1-11; 10:46). Benny Hinn, the greatest tongues speaker today, must use translators to communicate with anyone of any language!
✿ MODERN FALSE TONGUES are emphasized over the other sign gifts. The reason is simple - tongues are much easier to counterfeit. Would you rather babble or handle snakes and drink poison? So Benny Hinn goes to coliseums to heal, not to hospitals! Charismatic faith and power tremble, when real miracles are required! Remember how and why Pharaoh's magicians had to quit (II Tim 3:8-9)!
✿ Modern false tongues are not God's anointing. Paul, the great apostle to the Gentiles and our example in following Christ, used the word only ONCE, and that was in a different context (II Cor 1:21)! He never used it in the three Pastoral Epistles.
✿ Modern false tongues are not the heavenly language of angels. Angels do not babble, gibber, bark, cackle, laugh, or oink! Some take Paul's hyperbole of I Cor 13:1 and make it some mysterious heavenly language, and then they claim that is what they speak! But Paul merely drew an extreme illustration of how worthless even the most glorious gift of tongues would be without charity.
✿ Modern false tongues emphasize women. Paul warned of televangelists entering homes and taking captive silly and lustful women (II Tim 3:6-7). The apostles taught that women are the most easily deceived by these seducers (I Cor 14:34-35; I Tim 2:14; I Pet 3:7). Paul warned women to be silent in the churches, but Charismatics promote women as pastors (I Cor 14:34-35; I Tim 2:11-12)!
✿ Modern false tongues have been proven NOT to be any language. If Charismatics disagree, they should take their gift to a linguist and preach to him. Or they can take their gift to a nation of that language and confirm it among native speakers. But they will not do this any sooner than Benny Hinn will clear a cancer ward or empty a morgue. He stages healings, and they fake tongues.

Speaking in tongues changed my life, it has edified me during the most TRAUMATIC times of my life and God has HEALED ME! Ive never needed pharma drugs or professional counselling. I praise God for a father who was a scientist, philosopher and pastor. He taught and educated me how to think, understand the Word, and use reason to get my own way out of my pains and make better decision, but the gift of tongues has shifted my human spirit to one of POWER when the devil, the evil have tried to oppress me. Ive prayed in faith and spoken in tongues and felt the power of Gods Spirit LIFT my faith above the lies of the enemy. The utterance was of the Spirit and I had no idea what I was saying. It was not for interpretation, I use it in my personal prayer life. Aka ALL THE TIME. Throughout the day I am praying. I soeak in tongues in the car. Walking in the store, praising around the house, in the shower, when im in intercessory prayer I do get “estatic” and theres NOTHING wrong with that! Praise God with your body yeild it as an instrument of praise and yeild your praise as a SACRIFICE of praise. Tongues can make one feel estatic. Not saying that the churches that I have attended are bad because they do have entertained the ideology of becoming more closer to God when speaking in tongues . It came to the point that I was spiritually insecure because i thought I need to have everyone's jam to be labeled as a HS filled christian. But thanks to this messages and even Paul washer and througn God's word it has enlightened and has change my heart to be in pursuit of the integrity , the truthfulness of the gospel and not on vision and mission that chruches our posting on their billboard. Listening to Piper, I hear a very genuine answer, and one given in humility. I have learnt that I cannot claim to love people more than God does and that as our Father, He will gladly give His gifts to His children. The child who receives a gift should not run around belittling those who haven't. In the same vein, the one without the gift should not castigate the one who received, or even claim the gift is fake. They would do well to earnestly look forward to receiving theirs. Jesus does not look for opinions, He answers those who call.

Referring to "I would rather speak five words with my understanding" I would suggest we read more of the sentence and note the word "yet": "I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding". It is clear that Paul made this argument regarding the use this gift in the church and it appears that he spoke in tongues a lot when not in church. Though it would seem that not all believers had the gift of tongues, it does appear to have been in abundance and led Paul to write more than just a few words about it!. Paul also writes in 1 Cor 14:23 that "if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?" So "the whole church" "in one place" "and all speak with tongues" would only seem likely if many people had this gift. We can also see from scripture that baptism in the Holy Spirit was usually witnessed with the speaking in tongues. The point being: rather desire and use the gift of prophecy and pray for the gift of interpretation so that, when the church gathers, all may be edified by the use of the gifts. It is more blessed to give than to receive, and so it is with the use of the gifts... Be blessed but, even more, be a blessing to others so that our Father in heaven, the Giver of all good gifts, may be glorified!

I am impressed that one who does no,t can agree because of the scripture as opposed to what they might have been taught or based on their(lack of) experience! Paul says to,"Earnestly desire spiritual gifts",which He never repeats about anything else! If the Holy Spirit/God just "chooses" and "determines" who is going to have which gift, why then does anyone have to desire any gift or anything? God's gifts and blessings are not automatic! "I will give you the desires of "your" heart"!
One will not automatically have what God wants them to have just because He wants them to have it , any more than God will automatically keep one from sinning just because He wants one to stop sinning!
Deut. says that God tells us to "choose blessings or cursing, life or death" it is all encompassing and not up to Him!!
One does not "have to have" anything that the devil wants us to have, and one does not "have to have" anything that God wants us to have either!! We can refuse both,or "have i"t through ignorance(in the case of the devil) or "not have it" from God out of ignorance also!!

I speak in tongues. I received the gift when I was praying to God at 12 years old. I was raised Pentecostal, However, I do believe some abuse this gift. The scriptures show order in how it's to be practiced. It's for ones own personal growth. Not to be put on blast for people to see. It's a gift. But if someone doesn't have that gift, it's completely okay and they are no less or more than someone who has it. The Holy Spirit gives us each gifts. So we can't earn them. If a person doesn't agree, that's okay, but don't paint all Christians who have this gift with a broad brush. And arguing and putting down someone who does, or does not use this gift, doesn't bring God glory. Nor does it reflect John 13:34-35. We should all be careful with how we respond. Delivery of a response should be carefully thought out. Exhorting and encouragement are both great tools to use when done in the right spirit. God bless!

Standing In Awe Gracefulybroken This is false teaching. The gift of speaking in tongues is not what the disciples experienced on the Day of Pentecost. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 14:26-27 explains how when the *gift* of tongues is operating, there are only two or three taking turns and another interprets.
On the Day of Pentecost they *all* spoke in tongues at once 120 people, *not* two or three and *not* taking turns.
Lastly, Jesus Christ(Yehoshua HaMoshiach in Hebrew) said in Mark 16 that to speak in tongues all you need to do is believe. I ask you to just surrender yourself wholly and completely to the Lord. Ask Him to speak through you and He will. He is not a respect or of persons and there is nothing you need to do but believe Him.
Remember, it’s not a task for you to accomplish. It is simply allowing the Holy Ghost to manifest in you.

Some says, "it is a gift not for every Christian." But I would rather say, since it is a gift, everyone can have it if they ask for it; and yet it is totally up to the Holy Spirit.

Thank you, Thomas Fryxellus, yours is one of the more biblically correct replies I have read here so far. God's people must realize that the natural, reasoning, carnal mind of man fails in the presence of and the moving of the Spirit of God. John's gospel 3- the wind blows but you cannot see where it comes from or where it goes, so is everyone who is born of the Spirit. The Spirit of God is God. And as it says in 1st Corinthians 13, whether I speak with the tongues of men or of angels... Not all tongues can be interpreted as an Earthly language but they can all be interpreted by the Holy Spirit in the gift of interpretation through another believer. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-12. These gifts are given to the church by the Holy Spirit. Yes, let love be the root and motive of all we do. But do not try to understand God's Spirit with your natural/ carnal mind any more than you can understand God with your natural/ carnal mind. It is the mind of the Spirit we seek not the mind of the flesh. 1 Corinthians 2: 9-16. The things of the Spirit are foolishness to the Natural mind and they can only be spiritually discerned. Through seeking God with fasting and the Word and worship He will make his thoughts known to you as well as his gifts. May God's people seek the higher things. God's ways are not our ways and his thoughts are so much higher than ours. Isaiah 55:8-9. God bless.

Correct, Greg. The phrase "praying in the Holy Spirit" (also used in Eph. 6:18) is not a call to some ecstatic form of prayer, but simply a call to pray consistently in the will and power of the Spirit, as one would pray in the name of Jesus Christ (cf. Rom. 8:26-27)

I have to say, just for myself, it is a relief to hear that a prominent pastor so committed to Jesus cannot speak in tongues. When I hear some people saying that speaking in tongues is such a powerful tool to use against the enemy, it makes me feel bad because I can't do it. I guess it would be like any gift. I have the ability to paint and have musical talent as well. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect everyone to have the same gifts. If most well known Christians had this same gift of tongues, it could discourage many Christians from feeling accepted as part of the church. I also felt relieved when I read that passage by Paul about how not everyone has the same gifts.

If a man cant understand "interpret" the tongues "languages" your speaking in, he will not recieve edification but God understands all tongues "languages", therefore you will be speaking just to God. If there is no one to understand "interpret", then your suppose to keep it that way (between you and God)....in other words, keep quiet. If you dont do this, then your just gona be speaking in the air because no man will understand you.

On June 25, 2018 my sister and I were in Medjugorje, Bosnia/Herzegovina. We made our way up to Apparition Hill and passed by many who stopped at the 14 Stations of the Cross along the way , quite a climb,... I watched some people make their way up the hill barefooted which would certainly be a painful effort. Once at the top of the hill we shared the area with hundreds of others who made the journey. I noticed no one talking but many were weeping and or silently praying as they gazed at the Virgin Mary statue. After about 20 minutes at the hill top my sister said to me on a couple occasions that she felt that she had to say something but was hesitant to do so because she felt she might be disturbing others. She seemed agitated or in an anxious mood to me so I said to her to just say what was on her mind if she felt so compelled to do so. Moments later she began to speak loudly in a language that I did not recognize. I initially thought she had rehearsed some prayer in the Croation language but quickly dismissed that possibility as I am familiar with that language. As I gazed at my sister in a state of disbelief and degree of shock for about a two minute duration she spoke in tongues with conviction in a trance state with her arm and hands extended upwards. When she had finished she began to shake uncontrollably and weep. In fear that she might fall on the stoney ground I quickly reached out and held her closely. Moments later a woman who was visiting from India approached us and asked my sister if she was aware of what had just occurred. My sister replied by stating she wasn't quite sure of what just had transpired. The Indian woman stated that " You have spoken in tongues ". I was not aware of what this meant at the time so she explained it to me. I later discovered through my sisters husband that he had witnessed my sister speaking in tongues many years prior to what had happened in Medjugorje. At the time this happened I was not a particularly religious person and probably would not have believed what happened that day if I did not witness the event first hand. The event has certainly changed me and opened my mind to a more spiritual person. I realize the Universe is full of unexplained events and mysteries that each of us must journey through during our time on Earth. There is much to learn,.. keep an open mind.

Paul admonished me to pray without ceasing so I took the bible as being 100% true.
I have been praying in tongues now for 10 years, 5 to 10 hours per day. I am so glad I did not quit along the way, or look for outward signs that my prayers were doing well for others or myself, for the longest time there was no evidence of edification. Then about 4 years into this venture I began to experience the Holy Ghost in a new way, he begins to explain passages of the written word to me that made the gospel understandable to me.
As I continued PIT for long hours every day and night, I began to have unusual favor dropping on me without asking anyone for anything, the favor was overtaking me at every turn in slight ways that only I could recognize and know. Now as I continue to PIT there is from time to time a new dimension to my prayers I have a change in tongues known as the gift of tongues and Interpretations of tongues, I write these Interpretations out, as they are things that are being said to me about my near and/or distant future, and they never fail to come to pass. Now I prophecy almost at will without a pre-ceding tongue, and they too are 100 percent accurate and do come to pass, sometimes they are insights into biblical texts too, little mini revelations about the bible subjects that both Paul James, Jude, John, and Peter wrote about. Mysteries explained, prayed out.
Now I am stepping it up on purpose praying more hours on a consistent basis, as God has blessed me with more time available, I now only have to work 2- 5 hours per day to receive the amount of money it takes me to live.
I recommend you start, don't look back or even think of stopping, PIT without ceasing and it yields big favor and grace. God says if you pray in tongues excessively it will make you irresistible, in my words “whatever you need will find you, it cannot stay away, it will find you”. PIT is a revelation gift to the body of Christ; the only gift we totally control the operation of. I can pray anytime for as long as I want just because I choose.
Jude said as we pray we are building a house from the ground up, building upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus said he was preparing a place for me in the Father's house (the church) it would be built and fully furnished, the church will be full of Mansions that had been placed there for Fathers habitation or permeant places of abode, that my friend is what we are becoming when we pray in tongues, these permeant places of the dwelling of our God, placed in the father's house (church) by Jesus our Lord and savior. We are placed into the church as it pleases Jesus.
We choose to pray or not pray, when and where and how long to spend in our prayer closet. I have yet to go into an actual closet, I understand by reading the bible this gift when entered into fully brings rest, REST from life’s toils and hard labor, Jesus gave me this gift, as Apostle Paul said I don’t want to despise Gods gifts. The Holy Spirit prays through me the exact next thing I am going to need before I become aware of my need, and he then brings those things to me, with the assistance of the heavenly helpers (angels on assignments) without my human labor to obtain I just receive when they arrive. This is the REST wherewith he causes the weary to rest! PIT, no- ceasing. PIT is a revelation gift, as you PIT the scripture is revealed, your calling and your ministry will be revealed and how to fulfill your ministry step by step, day by day is revealed a little at a time. Paul said he did not shadow box but he always hit the target, why because of the day by day revelation. Most people will not endure long enough to draw water from this deep well, If it is not quick fast and in a hurry most people quit before they get a taste of the provision freely given by God, Grace, Favor, and freedom from the curse of mammon which enslaves your time and puts most into chains of financial bondage.
I can now understand the Apostle Peter when he wrote the admonition to cast all my care upon Jesus and he will care (take care of me) for me, as a husband cares for his wife. This will end in disaster unless you have prayed yourself to a level where the Holy Ghost gives you instruction to quit your job and be a full-time person of prayer. The reverse is true also if I carry my worries around I become prey for the devourer, the roaring lion who is looking for heavy-laden prey to devour. People full of debt and working 50+ hours per week, and their spouse too, this is bondage the Holy Spirit will free you from as you PIT without ceasing. Remember why God set the Hebrews free from Pharoah because they didn’t have time to pray or worship God. God wants his people free.
    AMEN and AMEN!

yea i was taught praying in the spirit was tongues but boy have I experienced differently. Intercession is something thats burns in me if/when I allow it to be used of me. I have had groans, literally, that I guarantee have shook the unseen realm, so powerful. Also I have had english prayers that flow from me like heavenly butter I'm listening to myself speak lol, this is praying in the spirit. I have had times of prayer where the heavy, weighty, burning love of the Father made me feel like I might explode and all I could say is 'He burns' (it was in respect to a particular person and His love for them), this one may have been the most powerful ever hands down. Anyway the religious spirit has caused many who don't speak in tongues to feel less than. This is two fold in that religious spirit is ALWAYS about being superior and 2nd fold in that if you feel less than you simply have some orphan spirit in you to work out still period. No reason for anyone to get upset, if something offends us we are not resting. To truly enter into His rest is to live in a place of un-offendable.

Tongues as a Gift to SOME in the Church; Is Totally Biblical, people who claim that it's wrong in all corners are unbiblical in what they Preach.
Tongues is not as much a Pentecostal thing as it is Biblical. it's the fault of the so-called more honest denominations that they don't exercise this Gift in their congregations

If you think you are Biblical explain what Paul meant, when in 1 .Cor. 14. 21 . he quotes from Isa .28.In the law it is written With men of other tongues---I will speak to THIS people and yet they will NOT hear me ,saith the lord v.2 Wherefore tongues are FOR A SIGN ,NOT TO THEM THAT BELIEVE ,but to them that believe NOT .Isa. points out that those who do not believe are in Jerusalem (Jewish leaders) and even then they will not believe .How does this relate to what happens today.?

Concerning the unbelieving Jewish leadership in Jerusalem at the time, I can't say much, but I think I can shed some light on this passage.
In verse 22 when Paul writes of "them that believe" and "them that believe not," try thinking of these as referring to the state of the person AFTER either tongues or prophecy rather than the person's state BEFORE tongues or prophecy, and that both cases deal with someone who is an unbeliever beforehand. Here's what I mean:
An unbeliever hears speaking in tongues and remains an unbeliever. This is described in verse 23 and corresponds well to the passage from Isaiah quoted in verse 21.
An unbeliever hears prophecies and as a result becomes a believer. This is described in verses 24 & 25.
One question that may arise is on what basis do I claim that verse 22 is applicable only to those who are unbelievers beforehand and not to believers. Perhaps this is because the topic under consideration is a SIGN. And since believers already believe, they are not in need of a sign.

Jeff you did not study Isa. 28 .that is what Paul is quoting from, that is the key verse ,it is only about unbelieving Israel and it says even after they see the sign they still will not believe. It is all about language and the end of the Jewish covenant and the start of the church age in gentile languages not Hebrew .It is not about ecstatic tongues as practised by the heathen then and now ,as he constantly says UNDERSTAND IT.

Wendy Mitchell But Paul himself said he spoke MORE in tongues THAN ALL the Apostles then. And , is it not obvious that it edifies one, from d fact that Paul wrote nearly all of d new testament plus his evangelical works etc. Jesus, himself said " these signs shall follow those that believe , they shall speak in diverse tongues etc. Did Jesus say, those that believe then only, or an open ended statement? And, then again, why would Jesus give us a gift that is useless? Please I beg you, if you do not have this gift, eagerly desire it. Since I started speaking in tongues about a year now, I have seen d great change in my life. Sins/habits I used to struggle with, don't even cross my mind again. I walk into blessings, favors I did not know about ( but d truth is that d Holy Spirit prayed through my spirit with my tongues in unknown or heavenly language over these issues or now testimonies to God d father), And this is why, presently I am praying for d gift of interpretation of tongues next and d other 7 gifts hopefully.

Whichever way, I do not believe you speak of the true tongues. The true tongue is given mostly when one is in a gathering of people of other tongues. Even so, it needs not be interpreted because you speak in a language they understand, giving glory to God.

How long will Christians cling to their worldly understanding through a sensuous and carnal mind! Move on to spiritual maturity! Stop allowing people become a stumbling block to finding your identity in Christ. They are still bound to a worldly understanding through their sensuous and carnal mind rather than the mind of Christ. Walk in all the Spiritual gifts and walk like Christ without having to "try" for it! We are not perfect, but we can become much less sinful without having to struggle. It's not legalism or lawlessness, it's love! :)

Speaking babble or gibberish that no one can understand or translate -- as Kenneth Hagin did and as Kenneth Copeland, Paula White, Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, TD Jakes and other "prosperity" or "word of faith" preachers (as well as many lay people) do, including "pentecostals" and "charismatics") -- is NOT "speaking in tongues", it is NOT scriptural, it is anti-biblical. It is critical to understand that according to scripture, the gift of speaking in tongues ALWAYS involves speaking a REAL HUMAN LANGUAGE complete with syntax, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
A "tongue" is the Bible's word for a REAL, UNDERSTANDABLE HUMAN LANGUAGE (such as Hebrew, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Tagalog, Swahili or Arabic for example). The gift of tongues means speaking in a foreign language that the speaker does not know and cannot understand. When a tongue (language) is spoken in the presence of a person who knows that language naturally, then that person will immediately understand what is being said because it is the hearer's natural language.
      ruclips.net/video/deBkXxYThz0/видео.html
Here's an example: if a Christian who speaks ONLY English has the gift of tongues and is prompted by the Spirit to speak in Mandarin, then this believer will not understand his own speech, which is the essence of the miracle. Nevertheless, the speech is real Mandarin language. Although the speaker cannot understand the foreign tongue, anyone who knows the Mandarin language from China will understand the speech perfectly.
So when the Bible uses the term "tongue," it is NOT referencing a strange, nonhuman pattern of speech or utterance; it does NOT mean babbling gibberish which no one understands. On the contrary, the term tongue in the Bible simply means a NORMAL SPOKEN HUMAN LANGUAGE - but a language which the speaker himself does not know or understand. This has to be emphasised.
We see this truth at work in Acts 2 when thousands of new Jewish Christians began to speak in "unknown" tongues at Pentecost; we see that these "tongues" were normal, human languages that many foreigners in the crowd could understand naturally:
Acts 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
Acts 2:7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
Acts 2:8 “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
Acts 2:9 “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Acts 2:10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
Acts 2:11 Cretans and Arabs - we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”

So you can see that "speaking in tongues" is NEVER a practice of uttering gibberish or chanting repetitive sounds, as we have heard done by Kenneth Hagin, T D Jakes, Paula White, Kenneth Copeland, Benny Hinn. So much of what passes TODAY as "speaking in tongues" is clearly nothing more than babbling gibberish, and that is our first clue that the modern-day practice of speaking in "tongues" is rife with error and false displays, rather than being a true work of the Spirit. Some people even say they can teach you to speak in tongues -- you will see immediately that this is totally erroneous and UNbiblical.

I admire John Piper's teachings because he is well versed with the word of God. I would like to share my testimony about how i began to speak in tongues. I had never spoken in tongues but was eager to speak. whenever i tried to utter, i ended up thinking (just like pastor John) that i was making up syllables.
    I knew, however, that Apostle Paul had said, make melody in your heart unto to the Lord. So, i started making melody in my heart by uttering syllables to my favourite tune. Then, i declared "In the name of Jesus, the syllables i am uttering are for the glory of God". I asked the Holy Spirit to help me utter syllables, in Jesus Name. Now, if we ask anything in Jesus name, it cannot come from the devil; so it must come from God. Therefore, i just started uttering syllables, having faith in the Holy Spirit, believing that He was helping me speak in tongues. So, by faith i began uttering syllables and refused to accept the lie that my mind was telling me;
Now, i speak in tongues more than all of you! And I know that i am not making them up because I get charged up in the spirit and am filled with joy and love.
Every bornagain christian must speak in tongues or desire to speak, for this is what Paul wanted us to do.

    • @GarySellars

+Kevin Datt I enjoyed that testimony! Great example of how we can use our faith! I, on the other hand, do not like John Piper's teaching because, in my hearing, he spews entirely too much unbelief and too much contrary to the Spirit and wisdom of God. Claiming that God refuses to allow him to receive the baptism of the Spirit is lying about God *AND HIS WORD* and claims God has told him things God would not say.
