    My fingers hurt/ almost lock too, from what I have found is that it happens if I hold the bars too tight. Or if the trail has a ton of small bumps the vibrations make my fingers almost lock in place and so hard to straighten them out.

      I have that same problem. My finger joints burn horrible on long fast techy downhills. It happens occasionally during long days of riding but at the bike park last weekend my fingers felt like they were all breaking at the same time on the end of long trails. I couldnt open my hand easily either. Ive been using PNW loam grips and that helped for a while but the pain started again 6 months ago. Any suggestions? Its so bad that I actually couldnt ride and I had to stop a few times on every trail during the end of the day when I was at the bike park.

      so what ... two 2hr trips a day? I used to live 26 miles from my office, I could do about three days in a row and I'd need a rest day. I realized I couldn't keep up that pace and started stealth camping closer to work then went home for weekends instead. Been doing that for five years now. still no car, and I'm considering getting a Surly Big Fat Dummy... wonder if there's something wrong with me? 🤣

      oh yeah, and get a BOB and load it up, your speed won't change much on the flats, but the climbs will slow down, and if you REALLY want to increase resistance, throw on some studded snow tires ...that 13 mph will drop down to 7-10 though, so add more time to your commute to compensate

Hectic but it seems to work at the mo😂 thanks for the tips 👍

    My little fingers would go numb after a long ride. I swapped out the grips that came with my bike for some Chromag grips and it fixed the issue. My pinky fingers are no longer going numb now. The guys at my local bike shop were a great help in selecting the right grips for my ride.

    Numbness , burning sensations, pins and needles etc. in the smallest two fingers on each hand is almost always ulnar nerve damage and is very common in many cyclists. The ulnar nerve runs down the arm and through the wrist and across the palm and can be damaged by too much pressure being put on the nerve. softer grips and padded gloves definitely help. Setting the angle of the brakes so your wrists are not bent while in your most common riding position is also very helpful in reducing damage. Most people recover with the changes I mentioned above and rest. Severe cases can require physio and sometimes even surgery. I have had problems with ulnar nerve damage for 15 years and am still riding loads with only the occasional flare up.

    I had an issue with little finger pain/numbness. My doctor mentioned the ulnar nerve that runs up your arm to your back. Try rotating your brake levers down so your wrists aren’t as compressed, move the seat back a little bit so there isn’t so much of your weight forward on the handlebars or just try to focus on light hands heavy feet. I haven’t hand a recurrence since but am mindful of and am sure to take breaks and stretch out.

    If you're going to hang your bike, do it by the front wheel against a wall. Hanging upside down or front wheel down will likely cause any air in your brake lever reservoirs to work their way into the lines. Shimano also warns against hanging or turning your bike upside down, such as when fixing a flat in the field.

  • @chrisgenever7002
    @chrisgenever7002 5 лет назад +1

    Excessive bar sweep and/or high control lever angles will put undue pressure on the metacarpals of the pinky along with the associated blood supply and nerves. The result will be pain in the phalanges area. I agree that there is a setup problem. Grips may help but are not the issue if noticeable pain is occurring in such a localized area.

  • @jonnymorrisuk1
    @jonnymorrisuk1 5 лет назад +2

    Plus tyres - grip and comfort. Hard tail - twitchy light nimble riding. Depends which you really fancy, but in either case the more you spend the better you should get, and the more you will enjoy riding. Carbon not strictly necessary but it will provide a more rigid and lighter ride for pushing hard up hills.
    Flat pedals are not for all situations and trail types, personally I worry far too much about having a bad accident while being clipped in (had plenty of stupid falls entirely due to being clipped in on the road bike, gone back to flats and feel much more confident all round). MTB riding has situations where you really need to be able to put a foot down in the blink of an eye or exit the bike entirely when things go wrong, you could try combination pedals so you can try with flats and gain confidence over trail features first.

    I get the exact same thing in my outer two fingers on each hand after riding very long, very fast chattery trails all day. Making time to stretch them out helps a little but after a long day they always cramp and seize up eventually. My guess it has something to do with sustained small vibrations, I believe builders who use pneumatic drills can suffer the same problems.

    I'm quite sure that the little finger pain is a result of pressure on the nerves inside the wrist.
    While the tips about new grips and different bar position might help in a longer perspective, it is essential to get some rest and refrain from riding when such symptoms appear (which of course is something that no weekend warrior is willing to do on the first day of their long-awaited trip to the bike park)
    It's probably not gonna magically go away and you risk developing the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and messing up your nerves and wrists pretty much forever.
    #askgmbn - Would you be able to get some more in-depth information from a medical proffessional (neurologist?) and maybe film an episode about this?
    There seems to be a lot of misinformation around it and plain wrong advice coming from people who simply never experienced it themselves and just tell everyone to stop whining and ride it off.

    4:52 I have heard of people getting vibration white finger from mountain biking, this permanent condition is usually from using power tools that create vibration for to long an amount of time! (It's usually worse in colder temperatures) It can be prevented by keeping the hands warm and limiting time of vibration. Gloves, grips, suspension, and tyre pressure can help prevent vibration.

  • @jesse-dg8yx
    @jesse-dg8yx 5 лет назад

    As for little fingers hurting I would assume that your little finger doesn't grip the bars and so wiggles in the vibrations, I get that problem sometimes. If your setup feels fine all I could suggest is finger workouts? If that's a thing? Or make your grips thicker to support your finger, with tape underneath or even on the outside of the grips, depending on if you have push on or lock on grips.
    I hope this helps, I've included what I originally wrote for extra detail if needed. Sometimes I get carried away and write everything, only realising what wasn't important later on.
    I find with fingers hurting I usually get it from super hard and constant vibrations. I went out on a super bumby trail with a wheelie bike (26 inch jump bike with no suspension forks and slightly higher bars) because that's what I had at the time and I had 60psi. Over all I would not recommend it at all but my fingers started aching from the vibrations, all my fingers except my finger resting on the brake. I think their problem would be that their little finger is just weaker than the rest so doesn't actually grip the bars and just hangs looks, causing it to constantly wiggle in the vibrations... Make sense? I would say keep yourself aware of how your fingers sit on the grips, if this is the case I'm not sure you'll have much luck with making your little fingers stronger. I would suggest if you have push on grips make sure they're fairly soft (I use bmx odyssey broc raiford grips on all my bikes because I love how soft they are, how far you can stretch them, the design and the included bar ends) you could put electrical tape under the grips to make them slightly thicker to support your little finger. If you have lock on grips all I could suggest is put tape on the outside? I feel like thicker grips on that finger will help support it and stop it hanging and wiggling in the vibrations.

    I guess little finger pain can be caused by too much back sweep, or it could be joint misalignment causing nerve pain, it could be caused by misaligned wrist, arm, or just the finger, he might have it on both fingers at the same time, I can't know for sure, but this is what I have experienced, but not only little finger but others too, most misalignment happens in my thumbs, wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck but other fingers too, so check if it feels right if not pop it back in place, ifall joints are in place, then the problem might be somewhere else, something might be misaligned so he gets nerve pain, for me it lately has been left toe, but my back was misaligned.
    If finger hurts does not always mean it's just the finger that has a problem, for example misaligned neck can lead to shoulder pain, I had things like this happen all over my body, annoying, but be sure to check for stuff like this before riding, to avoid injury.
    For my wrist issue I got Troy Lee wrist support, it helps, but I got problems all over.
    But it could also be too small grips, bight need to go up in one or two sizes, but also might be using way too big grips, I use 34mm Rev Grips, my palm and finger wrap around it perfectly, I use size medium poc gloves, got pretty average looking hand, my fingers are quite average, but it's how ell hand wraps that matters. If he got huge hands there might not be grips that fit, unless someone makes custom grips, biggest grips i seen are 34mm, or close, so Revgrips, Lizard skins, Aury.
    Check if fingers are locking up, if they are it's mostly misalignment of fingers, could also be worse if wrist is too.

    Which way would be faster a steady and not that steep but long ascend or a short steep ascend and then a long flat way? Same Question for a descend.
    Let's consider nothing technical.

    • @geemail369
      @geemail369 5 лет назад

      *Ascend:* see for yourself on uphill switchbacks - one or two you might get away faster with cutting the apex (steeper) but all the way up a mountain your legs will be toast after a few turns!
      *Descend:* well ... that one's obvious! 😉

    Im currently choosing between two bikes , a 2015 canyon strive which offers XT gears and SLX brakes version with pike RC 160mm travel
    VS the 2017 trek fuel EX 9 29 which has an X1 drive train, guide rs brakes and a fox 34 but is only 130mm travel
    which could be the better overall bike performance wise given they both cost the same
    P.S. I ride a 26er hard tail with 110 mil fork if that helps

    Hey guys! I have recently bought my first full suspension bike, a 2018 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon, and I am wondering if there is any simple maintenance things I need to be aware of with regards to the suspension (like lubrication)? Also, I live in Canada and since it is the winter right now, is there any precautions I can take to protect the bike from getting water and salts in places like the headset and suspension? Thanks! #askgmbn

      Shorter reach to accommodate for longer stem - when on the drops steering feels very odd when installing a ~70mm stem.
      Will take some trial and error picking the right stem due to the 3 different hand positions to find _your_ sweet spot.

    #AskGMBN How does reach and wheelbase affect a bike in the air? I've noticed on my Sonder Transmitter that some lips can make me nose dive and I don't find the same effect if I ride my dirt jumper which has a 4 degree steeper HT angle and is about 50mm shorter reach and 127mm shorter wheelbase. It also feels harder to correct my angle in the air on the Sonder if I do start nose diving which makes sense. Would raising my bars to change my body position help prevent this or are there any other things I could try?

    #AskGMBN Hi guys, just recently bought a new MTB 2019 SC Hightower LT, pretty stoked. This is the first MTB I’ve run with a tubeless setup, while getting ready for a ride the night before, noticed both my tyres have dropped pressure, more so on the back tyre. Is it normal for the tubeless tyres to drop pressure over a couple of days between riding? Haven’t noticed any sealant leaking anywhere on the tyres or rims. Thanks

    Hi everyone! I'm wondering if all tubeless sealants stink?
    I'm using the Mavic sealant that came with my wheels (first time running tubeless). I'm loving the setup except that I keep my precious bike in my living room and the strong chemical smell of the sealant somehow permeates out. Is this common or is it just this sealant? And can anyone recommend a good sealant for odourlessness and longevity?

    • @Dude-Smellmyhelmet
      @Dude-Smellmyhelmet 5 лет назад +1

      Maybe not setup correctly. OR you just need to learn to jump. Preload!!

    • @gertkriel5764
      @gertkriel5764 5 лет назад

      @@Dude-Smellmyhelmet no the jump is fine I understand the preload part, but because of your comment it made me think I'm preloading the front fork but not the rear. I'll test this theory if it works then problem solved.
      Ps the sag settings on the front and rear are both on 30 percent.

    • @geemail369
      @geemail369 5 лет назад +1

      Well, compared to a hardtail suspension will soak up ("give") some of your input, inevitably. Timing is a lil different too, you'll need to adjust your technique a bit.
      With the sag set correctly you might wanna opt for volume spacers if you feel like going through your travel too fast/far and not returning quick enough.
