50 years later: Every Brand's logo is just a dot
1984 anyone ? Microsoft is the worst, everything now from windows is soulless, boring and generic. We have better resolution, but everything is reverting back to unrefine mode. It's almost like something wants us less creative, less original, less free and less smart, oh well, must be me.
Design trends go off and come back.
Every company will have a different colour (hex value) dot
Or s square, everyone recognizes a square.
Maybe 50 years from now all the logos will retain detail so the we can distinguish them because there will only be 6 corporations left that have not merged with each other.
I pretty sure the new Pringle logo make me subconsciously not eat pringles

Of all the logo changes displayed in this video. The Pringles change was BY FAR the worst. I was honestly offended when I first saw that in stores lmao. It looks unfinished, like they gave up half way through designing a more simplified logo, and I agree with Solo Sands' point that it now looks dead. Some of these logo changes make sense, and I can get them being better objectively, like the Discord logo... But come on Pringles, that's just embarrassing.

As a graphic designer, I personally like minimalism quite a lot. The problem is that EVERY company is using it now regardless of whether it serves them or not.
Minimalist logos work really well for things like banks, airlines and companies that need to look universal and reliable.
Companies like Discord, Pringles among others need a distinct personality because THAT'S what attracts people to them. Mind you, I do think Discord did keep part of its personality, with the colors and style. But the Typography doesn't serve them imo. I think the little guy's change isn't that big of a deal lmao
The text is fine. No one knows what youre talking about when you say "the Discord font". It wasn't recognizable and certainly not memorable. The new one however is readable. Personally I like the new Discord logo and the hate around it is silly especially if its meant to look like a controller.

NGL the Spotify logo is a huge improvement. That old logo was a mess

Holy shitty that looks bad. Damn you’re right.
@MrDjBigZ it’s like the difference between a burning car wreck or your grandma’s shitty old car. Your grandma’s car isn’t the best but it’s preferable to the burning car wreck.
I think Spotify is one of the case of a logo being simplified correctly. The Spotify word wasn’t really memorable like it is in eBay, and the new logo has the most memorable part at the forefront.
2:48 The worst on is Uber, they went from:
U B E R
to:
Uber
Fr, I’ll be more pissed if they take away those 3 lines,
It is virtually perfect , Nothing more, nothing less…
The problem with Spotify logo is that it's NOT intuitive.
I specifically picked people unfamiliar with logo (I took 73, in fact), showed them the picture and asked what do they think this software is doing.
2 went with flashlight. 71 went with wi-fi.
Except it’s the wifi logo.
But the one thing I hate the most about it is that it's not upright, it's slightly tilted, and that makes me kinda tilted.
Tbh the main negative experience I have of the simplification is telling app icons apart. When most brands have a saturated icon with no lines, shading or detail, it's kinda the same 6 skittles representing 50+ apps. Even in the limited space of streaming video you might be clicking.. one of the blue ones or one of the red ones?
And then you have the anime gacha games which just have an overly detailed character on it which in case of even 2 of these apps near each other it makes it really hard to distinguish because they are a mess.

Simplifying a logo so it will be easier to recognize or display isn't necessarily a problem. The problem lies with companies drastically changing their logo, making it unrecognizable such as Microsoft edge and Pinterest. Another problem is a lot of companies have switched to a sharp typeface with consistent lines and angles which feels boring and no longer represents what that company is about. Take the Airbnb logo for example, the large blue and white bubble letters create a feeling of softness and comfort, and the old Pinterest logo, with its cursive, calligraphy like design, presents this feeling of artistic creativity which is what Pinterest is meant to share and both have just switched to colored text.
Agree the cursive script style of Pinterest fits their user base so much and for them to throw that away is pretty stupid. Disney is super successful with script font so it’s not like people can’t read them…

@@pomelo9518 me too but I quickly learned it's meant to be a Y. It makes their brand look fancier.
I understand your point and agree, but I also think it's worth considering the possibility _whether_ a company even wants their logo to be recognisable and to reflect their history. Microsoft Edge is a good example. Their new logo is actually more complex in terms of shading and colour than the old Edge logo, but definitely simpler in shape, as it went from being an "e" to a... croissant? But then, the "e" was also used by Internet Explorer. and you know how _that_ was. No one liked Internet Explorer for decades, and it's been the butt of basically every remotely experienced computer user's jokes. The original Windows 10 Edge was often mocked for just being Internet Explorer with a new name. Therefore, I'd say it's reasonable to assume they really just wanted to hammer home the message that the Chromium-based Edge is a new browser entirely and shouldn't even be associated with IE.
"Dunkin' Donuts has removed the 'Donuts' from its name because they want to further modernize the Dunkin' Donuts experience." LMAO at this point it just feels like companies are getting bored
That's probably not inaccurate. Some executive decides it's time to "go to the next level" and some poor sop is told to figure it out.

At least these artless, soulless, mechanized logos more accurately represent the companies that display them.
The worst part about oversimplified logos is that they couldve reduced gradients or shading to 2 or 3 solid colors to keep contrast, one of the most important parts of design, but they dont and just leave it looking like colored text.
Amogus
@@yungjose3369 a lot of older logos used gradients like the old youtube or the windows logos. @@yungjose3369 lol no Gradiants are dead effing simple for printing if this was on dot matrix printers during the 80's you would have a point but not in todays tech.

I have noticed this with software too, the icons used to look like the item they were representing but now they are all just black thin symbols which look very similar and sometimes impossible to tell what they are until you click on them. life is complicated enough, you should not have to learn what every symbol and icon means in order to know what it does, it should be obvious to anyone just looking at it. I think the thing that gets me the most about the Pringle's logo is how the text and tie still have the black stroke, but the face doesn't. The black stroke was a connecting factor of the old design, unifying the face, bow and text. I think this is part of what makes the newer logo so confusing. If they wanted to remove the stroke they could've unified the whole logo by removing it from the text and bow as well. I think one reason for the simplification is, that they now can use vectors instead of up-/downscaled images, which makes it easier to put the logo on stuff in different sizes
This is a fantastic point. For a logo that could hypothetically be plastered across a billboard it's important to be able to easily scale it up without it looking gross.
@@danielleanderson6371 Not a good argument because you can vectorize and raster. You can easily Vectorize the Pringles logo. Discord was already a Vector art. Most of the examples shown in the video were pretty much all Vectors already so scaling was never the issue. The little cuts in the older Discord logo are harder to print on various types of merch (as they said themselves) so that makes sense. It's a practical thing to fix. But arguing that vectorization is the reason is not applicable to pretty much anything unless it's ultra complex which would almost exclusively be relevant in cases like old, old Firefox.
I don't think it's a fantastic point. It is a point to take into account but the cases are so rare that you might as well omit it in a general discussion or put in as a small asterisk. Everyone is making vector marketing for logos. It's already by far the norm.
@@SiMeGamer I’ve actually thought on the Pringles logo a bit more and now I think the primary factor is printing costs. Having a pure black and white logo probably saves a few cents which adds up.

I gotta say discords was pretty simple already and the change is nothing compared to what they did to pringles
I also think that part of the reason some people are upset with the new logos is because they've become attached to them. If someone's never seen the new Petco or Firefox logos before, they're likely not gonna care when they see them for the first time. I know I've become attached to some logos, and while it does hurt to see some of their personality get taken away, it's not the end of the world.
which is why I feel confused when people talk about logo changes like Pepsi, I am relatives young so the 'gravitational pull of Pepsi' logo is the one I am familiar with. Even though I don’t really WANT to admit I got accustomed to the newer versions.
The pringles face looks so detached now from the rest of the logo, because the solid black line only goes around the text and not the face. It's just bad design
Honestly I love the new pringles face, but I hate that clumsy silly bold outline on the text. IF YOU WANT TO MODERNIZED YOUR LOGO, AT LEAST MODERNIZED IT AS A WHOLE LOL
Exactly, and the most disturbing thing is that it took them TWO YEARS just to fuck up so badly.
the logo is supposed to be the “personality” of the brand, what makes it memorable, but if they are all the same, none is memorable, it’s all the same, so simple
Yes whenever I see the pringles logo I think of how much it looks like Firefox
They all want to be part of the trend. Simplified logos are easier to read, reproduce and remember. In the marketing world, it´s all about adapting or dying, but some brands take it too far and sacrifice part of their identity and what made it unique for, idk, making more money I guess.
@@atiedebee1020 lol no but they all got the same aesthetic it looks like they all belong to the same brand
Yup, this trend for "simplification" is ultimately just making everything look super samey, which ironically will dramatically reduce memorability.

Kellogg's must be pleased that their changed logo for Pringles is used in the thumbnail for most videos on the subject of oversimplified logos.

The new font is a little more boring, and the old color looks a bit nicer. The controller is fine I guess.

A lot of times these changes are the ideas of departments or people in roles that realize that they redundant. So they have to make an issue about a non issue usually copying changes from some big silicon Valley company. Just like how every business now calls itself a start up.

2:31 NOO NOT CROCS!!! I LOVED THAT LITTLE CROCODILE GUY
ps 2:48 for some reason I love the old Airbnb logo, it looks like a warm summer day
Personally, I think the anger people feel about this is rooted in the fact that it just... Keeps happening. One company changes their logo and it looks like shit, and it's whatever. But time and time again companies keep changing their branding in the same predictable way that no one seems to like. No matter how much backlash they get, they go full steam ahead, because everyone else is doing it, I guess? At least to me, it's not that I feel powerless, it's that I'm irritated by how utterly out of touch these people are when everyone is screaming at them at full volume. Its the completely asinine attempts at justification that feel like blatant lies from design teams desperate to justify their pay check. No, your change doesn't make your brand "friendly" or "energetic". It just looks bad. Are they trying to lie to me, or to themselves?
no, they're definitely trying to lie to you. whatever they're trying to convey, they're not making any real substantial changes.
as the perfect example and with pride month coming up, look at how corporations treat it. the only thing they do is edit their logos to have rainbow colors and they'll change it back immediately on july 1st. it's all bullshit, and it definitely drives me insane too.
Yeah I study graphic design even and we have talked about oversimplification. I have to use minimum 3 colors to obey the rules for my homeworks because is the trend on companies. I am deffinitely not a fan of it.
i don't see a reason to change most of the logos in the first place, since most logos look fairly modern anyway it just seems like a waste of resources
"We have made this decision after careful consideration for what our brand represents. We intend to make the brand more user friendly, accessible and modern"
Sound familiar?
Companies changing their logos is fine with me but the problem I have with it now is that it feels like there are following a trend. I also feel like they lose more readability and uniqueness. I thank like logos should be like video game icons on computers. Some have more detail than others and some are really sample. And they communicate some information about what the game is like.
The reason why I find the oversimplified logos bad is because they feel so lifeless and uninspired. Due to every logo having a similar design structure favoring simple fonts and basic shapes, they start to feel very similar. Take, for example, the image at 7:51 with the logos of Google, Airbnb, Spotify, and Pinterest on the page. The upper logos felt unique, and had their own recognizable style and energy to them that made them stand out. Compare that to the bottom logos, whom look nearly identical in shape, with the only differences being their colors. People are mad because the logos are just boring and plain, they lack any sort of emotion in them and convey "I am a corporation" more than anything else.
It can be done right I’m sure but yes. Exactly the same reason modern architecture is so disliked. There’s just a bunch of shitty soulless one in our cities.
It's like they're just words instead of a logo
@@XiELEd4377 they were just "words" in the top logos too. What is your point?
@@mikethepublisher7910 I feel like what they mean, is that logos have personality and character to them. Now they’re just boring words.
They convey the name of the brand but they’re ultimately uninteresting and generic.
It's been a year and some months and still whenever I see prinkles, Im just like "Ah, yeah they still use the new logo". My point is that if after a year of the new logo, it doesn't feel like the original logo without thinking the old one, it has kind of failed or at least have been in the shadow of the previous one.
all of youtube’s recent changes to me have seemed stupid and arbitrary. like they werent actually changing to solve any problems, just shifting everything a bit to the left for no reason. the most annoying was how the comments moved if youre using an ipad. they were moved from beneath the video to being a box you pull up in front of the recommend videos on the side. this just feel stupid because now there is less room to see them and you cant see both them and the recommended videos at the same time. plus they didnt put anything underneath the video so they basically just crammed everything into a little area on the side while leaving a lot of space empty
In the future, company logos will be randomly generated.
That would be a nightmare. But i think there will always be people who see the value of investing in design (or at least I hope so)

The logo change for Discord wasn’t terrible. They could just use the old blurple for dark mode and make Light mode have the new one. The FONT change however is completely despicable. The old one was still legible without my glasses on.

@@fulicious2991 same. new logo is better imo. maybe i prefer the old font but i also don’t really care. i’m amazed how some ppl can care so much about this like wow
I'd even go so far as to say the new LOGO is a notable improvement. The new color I'm somewhat neutral about. But the new wordmark... whoever pulled the lever on that one should be blacklisted from being a graphic designer altogether
I wish the controller edges on the new logo were a little softer like the original, but besides that I like the new logo. The font and color, however, were SO much better before. Almost every "modernized" logo has one thing in common: they are almost all generic as hell and lack any real personality. What amazes me is how so many companies that already had incredible logos would just throw them away for something more simplistic and sterile. It just leads to nearly every company's branding looking the same.
That's how trends work. Eventually this trend will die, but I feel as if this simplification of logos is just another way for corporations to save money.
the new animal planet logo jumps out to me the most. the old one used to be super wild and playful, now it's boring and hollow
2:47 really brings this one home. Look at airbnb, Spotify, Pinterest, Microsoft and Uber. What personality is there? They didn't even bother using different fonts, or if they did, they look so similar they are nearly indistinguishable from each other. Plain coloured text using the same font as everyone else does nothing to convey personality or identity. It just says "I am a generic soulless and lifeless corporation for whom there is money and nothing else matters." That's not appealing, that's repulsive
