The word genocide is more suitable for what is happening to the Palestinians which the US refuses to admit. Well the whole world can see the double standards.

*Welcome all friendly people to travel to Xinjiang, see Xinjiang with your own eyes and communicate with locals! If China had something to hide, it would not waste its time and money on "Belt and Road". Xinjiang is the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, the starting point of the Eurasian Continental Bridge, and the transportation hub of the "Belt and Road". Urumqi is an international metropolis, and Kashgar is a special economic zone like Shenzhen. Uyghur is a mixed ethnicity that formed during Tibetan rule of the region around 900~1000AD. The Tibetan ruling class were ruthless so the Tocharians, Han, Tuckics and even Tibetan peasants banded together to resist the inhumane treatment from the Tibetan nobilities. So it would be incorrect to call them immigrants as they have ancestries pre-date the formation of their ethnicity. It’s less the ethnicity moved there after Han dynasty but Islam moved there during the few centuries where China didn’t rule the region.

To be precise, both Uyger and Han languages are "broad Chinese" languages according to Chinese official/ government. It's just the outside world does not understand there are other words to distinguish the differences. When people say Chinese it's referring to English, German and other "official" languages. In China, people don't use Chinese vs Uyger language, instead it's Han vs Uyger, and other minority groups.

In fact, the Xinjiang region is no different from any other place in the world and a very classic place to visit in China. The Chinese are equally shocked that an ordinary region is being stigmatized and labeled “genocide” by Western governments. Because the Western media is so powerful that the Chinese people and the Chinese government need to keep proving themselves. For us it was a real shock, as if your home town was suddenly accused of being hell by everyone and sanctioned.

I know many people who traveled to China as tourists and those who lived there for work. Tourists will see the very best of China and likely be quite impressed. Those who live there probably have a more accurate perspective of life in China. From everything I gather, it's not as rosy as what tourists see, nor as horrible as the Western media likes to portray. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
