Over 6 years after the initial release of Cuphead, the mystery of the creepy previously thought to be unused song, has finally been solved! So no, it's not an anti piracy song, or the backwards song that gets played after the bad ending and no, it's not unused! Super cool to see this finally figured out!

If I'm not mistaken, the bad ending is a reference to one of the Contra games, where you are given the option to join the main bad guys, instead of fighting them.

I really love easter eggs that require years of solving; too much stuff in modern games gets dumped online too quickly, having to take time to figure these things out is so much more interesting.

Something like this feels so obscure though. I mean, get the bad end then enter the konami code? Where's the logic behind it? The time spent figuring it out? This just feels like obscurity for the sake of obscurity, unless there's some kind of clues that exist that we just haven't noticed yet.

If it had clicked that the bad ending is a reference to one of the Contra games (Contra was an inspiration behind the gameplay of Cuphead), it would have happened sooner.

Surprisingly when I was messing around w/ a unity in-game explorer for the Legacy No Patches of the game, the gameobject audiosource for the Vocal 666 audio isn't there, but the normal backwards theme is there in that version of the game (Which it was V1.0 of the game so some things were messed up/missing/buggy, so it is to be expected for it to not be in that version of the game). So I assume this was later then added when its first patch was released back in December 2017 (Not technically 6 years, but close to at least 😅).

Could they have repurposed the audio in the patch or was it pretty clearly just broken at the time?

I'd nearly forgotten about the track. It was so eerie but intriguing.
Well, the song thats revered isn't actually the title screen theme. Its actually an early unused version, that talks about Cuphead entering a tournament, rather than selling his soul. So my theory is it was supposed to play when the bad ending was triggered, however, since the title screen was changed, they removed it. Although they kept it in by entering a secret code, probably to spook any player whos messing around.

If that's what you're referring to, don't know how you got the idea the reversed one is that one. Since just listening to it, you can tell it doesn't sound like the beta theme.

For anyone who wants to try it, the music changes back to the original once you leave the game or enter a save file.
you could enter settings turn down the music it doesn’t effect the devilish version of the reversed song anyway

Makes me wonder what else would happen if you use the Konami Code at the right time depending which game your playing. I’ve always heard that it originally started as giving extra hearts/health in the early 2000s but began changing after a point. Maybe if an Easter Egg is still too hard to find, perhaps use the code at a specific point could help?
This place is so hard to think about because when getting the bad ending you usually immediately get back to devil instead of punching the konami code

The weird statuc us most likely from the images as spectrograms make weird noises if images are hidden in them

i was already previously aware that the audio was in fact real due to downloading a rip of the game's files a while back , but i had no idea it was a konami code easter egg . this is fucking awesome !!

When I was 10, I played Cuphead, I got the normal and bad ending normally, I jokingly used the Konami Code after both endings, nothing happened after I tried it in the normal ending (as far as I remember), but the music played when I did it after the bad ending, and I got freaked out, not a lot though because it wasn't that scary, I looked it up and I couldn't find anything about it asides from it being an anti piracy measure (though that was obviously false).

Hey tetra once I heard or read on another video that the creepy theme was apparently the original one to play after the bad ending but they removed the low pitch and stuff to keep the E rating but I'm not 100% sure if that is true

Originally this fight was supposed to become the second phase for the devil and the skeleton in background was from the transition to the third phase and after angel and demon were defeated and unused phase 3 transition where the devil would regenerate his skin and phase 3 would begin now this was removed because it was too difficult and phase 3 become phase 2 of the devil fight
