Immediately I find myself laughing . That's because Bernard manning was a natural joke teller . The type of person society dispises these days. A legend that I'll never tire of watching
he was very kind and generous to the poor and less fortunate all around his beloved Manchester...but he never mentioned it or sought recognition for it....a kind man
This guy was class. Told unbelievably funny jokes. His critics didn't focus on his joke's. They focused on the word racist. I've never seen a comedian so funny as bernard manning.
What's interesting is I'm the kind of guy who could easily be mistaken for a millennial snowflake because I'm not very thick skinned, yet I find Bernards jokes funny. The problem I find with some people these days is they see edgy comedy like this as a way to secretly promote hatred towards other races and cultures...and sometimes they're right, but in the case of Bernard I think the bloke is literally just in it to get a few laughs from the audience. Now, I'm not saying Bernard didn't have racist views but the impression I got from him is that he saw comedy as a separate entity; if he wanted to get a few biggots to go and beat up an ethnic minority he would just flat out ask them to do it, he wouldn't use his comedy show as a roundabout way of manipulating them into doing it. Plus there's the simple fact that any racists in the audience would probably do the same thing after watching the show that they would've done if they didn't go to see the show; motivation isn't always so black and white (for lack of a better expression). As for me: I'm against racism but I'm also against restricting forms of art, such as comedy. I'm also not a psychology expert but I do know that restricting a comedian from making racist jokes is ultimately just going to create more racism as the few idiots who took the jokes too seriously will pin the blame on whoever the comedian was making fun of. I personally wish there was an easy solution to this dilemma but there really isn't beyond the audience improving their education and not treating a comedy show like a live reading of an encyclopedia. Put it this way...if I was a racist and I went out and punched some black guy, I would be screwed no matter what I say, but I would still be able to maintain a tiny amount of dignity by stating that I did it because I'm racist rather than stating that I did it because some old fat bloke on a stage made it sound like a good idea. Now if anyone reads this and decides I'm a racist, they're free to think that...but they're wrong. I honestly believe in a world where we can learn to all get along with each other better than we currently do and appreciate life a whole lot better. I just don't believe we can achieve that by biting each others heads off every time someone says something we don't like the sound of.
i truly don't think bernard manning had any intentions or bad thoughts towards anyone or any race. That may sound ridiculous if you listen to him but he has the same humour towards anyone on the planet and beyond, including himself and Countrymen and women. He really was just in it for the laughs! it was okay back in the day so lets leave it at that. Many of my black and Asian friends found him funny. Speaks volumes
Bernard Manning always made me laugh. His 'racist' jokes were ridiculous, and the joke lies within the ridiculous. I've seen ethnic people in his club and they enjoyed it. Bernard may have a joke or two with them, but got it over with and did the rest of his act. It was all an act, and his delivery was almost always perfect.
I remember they tried to do him up on the radio one day. They got him on the phone and asked if they could book his club saying there would be gay comedians. He said no problem I was one of the first to help this one and that one and he said whatever you want you can have. Remember another time when he said if your in trouble make your way to my club and your be alright. A one off
Well put. Laughter is the best medicine! Those certain groups in society and worldwide who hold us back & cause trouble can all fit into the same catagory as having a no sense of humour (or a very narrow one!)
Saw Bernard many years ago in Brighouse, a very funny man. His whole act that night was no wonder the kids of today are out of hand, it’s the nursery rhymes they learnt as little ones. He then explained all the popular ones, and he had the audience in stitches.
Wish you were still here Bernard......You are missed !!!......I can't laugh at the shit that passes for comedy these days.......People mainly want a good old belly laugh and it is just not available anymore.......The do gooders have won the battle, but they will find eventually that they have lost the war.....big time......
The joke about 2 checkout girls being able to spot a single fella still tickles me.its bernards delivery ,just brilliant.sadly missed big man but we are still laughing at your jokes 🤣
Manning a City fan before the money arrived. Had years and years of grief from United fans. Like all City fans , he still thinks Denis Law relegated United. Wrong, I think Wolves won at Lunchtime and that relegated them. Still, keeps them happy.
One evening I was having dinner in the restaurant of the Grand Hotel Lincoln Bernard Manning came in and sat down for dinner prior to doing a show locally Someone called out to him asking for a joke He stood up at his table and entertained us for the best part of an hour Eventually his companion reminded him that they had to leave He bad us goodnight and departed having eaten nothing That is my memory of him A very decent man
What they never understood was that I was an equal opportunities comedian. Unlike them, with all their little checklists and taboos and easy targets, I never discriminated against anyone or anything. I was quite happy to get a laugh out of any situation. All that mattered to me was whether the gag was funny or not.
This was from the days before so many of today’s population forgot how to laugh with AND AT each other!! The on stage Bernard we see here was his ‘character act’ - in real life he was apparently a really nice and generous guy to everyone.
“They think their English cos their born here, that means if a dogs born in a stables it’s a fucking is it? I’ve never heard such fucking nonsense” lol I swear I nearly died
I will always remember Bernard Manning on Mrs Merton show in the 1980s she obviously invited him on to take the piss out of him, he wouldn't let her get a word in edgeways, she was embarrassed and wound up looking stupid, he took the piss out of her, she didn't last long after that
He does have a very good point. Jesus was born in a stable and he's not a horse. Blacks are still African/Caribbean whether they were born here or not. It's just like an Asian person is still Asian or a Chinese person is still Chinese whether born here or not. None of them can ever be considered English like us Native English people. :-) If you cook a Chicken Korma or a Pizza here they're not English are they? No they're Indian and Italian :-)
There’s nobody out there today that comes anywhere near Bernard as a stand up. I watch then and sit there bored. I do like Kieth Cuntabout though. Brilliant political broadcasts.
Saw him years ago in Blackpool. A group of us all pissed and sat at the front ready. He didn’t even look at us! One of the funniest comics ever but a bit of a braggart.
Absolutely! I couldn't have put it better myself! I am also quite happy to watch some of the stuff from Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy that is certainly racist. ps. is 1984 your birth year, if so, that makes another young fan of Manning - I was born in 1981!

The best comedian we've had in this country by a country mile.
What a funny man!! Rest in peace Bernard..... Anybody who does not like this does not need to watch it!! Easy!
he was very kind and generous to the poor and less fortunate all around his beloved Manchester...but he never mentioned it or sought recognition for it....a kind man
he bloody did. mention it any chance he got.

I bet sir manning is looking down at city dominating football with a massive smile on his face.
