      Open source doesn't mean free, just means the source code a available for review and criticism.

      You have to pay because Usenet is not peer to peer. All files are stored on backbone servers you have to pay to gain access to. Those servers cost a lot of money to maintain at the retention levels they provide.
      Nobody with both the resources to run a Usenet backbone and the passion to actually do so for free exists.

      Hammers are "open source". Nobody owns the basic design to the hammer. Nevertheless, hammers cost money to buy.
      "Open source" doesn't mean every thing built using open source is free.
