My brother in law, Allan Slutsky, did the arrangement of the song, produced the movie itself, and is the man conducting the band behind Joan. When I first heard this as kid in the 1960’s I thought it was about losing your girlfriend. As a professional musician, I could kiss the bass player and the vibraphone player (not to mention all the others, including background vocalists). They give so much to the special sound. And the one person not on stage, who should be, is the arranger. Holy crap, what a killer arrangement. The "dynamics" - loud and soft parts - add a lot of drama. If you're not a musician, you may miss this, but there's an incredible modulation :47 - :49 that would make Bach smile. I'm in awe of everything about this performance - it's one for the ages!

I just get lost when I listen to this. It takes me to another world. The bass part is so hypnotic. He seldom plays the root of the chord. I'm a musician and listen for those things. I love this version and the original version. This is interesting because of new ending. This is what makes music so great - the vocalists, song. arrangement, musicians, mixing, etc.

Everyone on that stage knows their musical potatoes through and through; and their pleasure in queueing up that number again is clear. As much as I enjoyed Jimmy Ruffin's original cover, Joan absolutely killed it. Her version is, for me, the ace and deuce of the "Brokenhearted" canon.

I vividly remember saying, "Who the F€*# is this woman, she can SANG, not sing, SANG" which is the southern gospel definition of singers in church who are so good, it leaves you speechless. Well Joan, you left me speechless. You did yourself and Jimmy Ruffin proud. Bravo to you! Great job!
