  • Seen Savanh (ຊີ້ນສະຫວັນ) is a style of Lao beef jerky where the beef is sliced very thin and is marinated pretty sweet. "Savanh" in Lao means "heaven," but, I was told that this style of beef jerky came from Savannakhet Province, in southern Laos, and that's where the name came from.

A friend of mine that was laos gave me a taste of his jerky deer and it was so good i been trying to hunt the recipe down. All i can say it had an light sot sauce taste which was rare to me for deer jerky also it looked like it was dipped into oil versus the usual dry jerky look

    Nana, after watching your video, I tried it the next day and it turned out good!!! I love Seen Savanh, I always wanted to learn to make it. Thank you. Oh, instead of msg, I found a substitution that contains NO MSG, but tastes similar to it. It's a mushroom seasoning. Some are imitators, but you have to read the ingredients that does not contain msg. You can buy it at any Asian store.

    Hi Nana, I make a version of this too but I like mine with soy sauce in the marinade. It gives it a darker color when cooked and gives it more flavor in my opinion. Have you ever tried it with soy sauce or ginger? I'm Lao too btw.

    • @CookingwithNana

      Kim, I have seen people add more ingredients, but I like to keep it simple with few ingredients so people can just eat it with their favorite jeow sauces to get the flavor they want.

      If you have a meat dehydrater you can use that. Or in the oven set to the lowest temperature and with the oven door open a little bit. Or use a fan to help blow the moisture away.

    • @CookingwithNana
      @CookingwithNana  10 лет назад +2

      Kazoua Xiong you can't put it in a sealed container. The meat needs air to flow through to dry up the water in the meat. If you are afraid of insects landing on the meat you can put a screen over the meat. I usually put a screen over my meat but I didn't see any bugs that day when I did the video.

      Cooking with Nana have you ever tried soy sauce? If so how did it turn out?
      There's this beef jerky from Sacramento called LJ's Beef Jerky. I've been trying to find a way to make it. Actually their ingredients list does list soy sauce.

      janny vongdashian it's going to taste a little different without MSG. You can try different batches with and without msg and taste the difference.
