Well not everyone knows boxing the reason I know that is you think Trinidad beat him when all laws of basic arithmetic make that impossible. But still nice talking with you
I had a distinct feeling Oscar would win going in. I figured vargas would be to slow not throwing enough seeing how Oscar fights hes very accurate and precise and consistent. You to match it if you want to win Sorry you lossed 😮😮 Vargas.
DLH was one of the best amateurs of all time, one of the best pro fighter of all time and yet at 39 is the best promoter in the business with Arum (a bad one). A true legend there is no one fighter since modern boxing history who achieve the half than DLH did.. never forget that .. a true Legend.. A did have a nice wife, the 2 best kids a father can have, a nice family job and I buy us a house 12 months ago.. One of my last dream : Meet DLH for just one minute of my life...
Smart indeed on the part of Mayweather. My question is, How long has he asked for drug tests? I never heard of it before his path crossed with Pacquiao's, when it seemed like testing was used a way out of the fight. What are your thoughts?
If i am not mistaken, it was summer of 2002. I watched this fight in a bar in toronto. Back in the days was real fighters putting real fights, Vargas had a heart of a lion, eventhough he was mismanaged and was thrown to the lions at an early age, He was the youngest champ in boxing histry. He fought tito, oscar, winkey, ike etc. He put a great show. Much respect to both of these guys.
I've always wondered how he was able to deliver such accurate assessments of a fight when they get so intense and so brutal. I'd be shouting in the microphone like "oh shit, oh shit, he's got him, it's over, it's fuckin over" LOL
well, one thing you and I can agree on is that Sweet Pea was something else, right? I remember when Oscar threw like 8 punches and Whitaker eluded them all. That guy had some amazing skills! I"ll have to go watch the second fight between Shane and Oscar. Maybe it was closer than I recall!
De La Hoyas Cup Is way Too High, Gave Him an Unfair Advantage, Man If Vargas would be able to throw better Combos in that Fight, He would have Knocked De La Hoya Out Cold, He was a Beast. This is OSCAR DE LA HOYA HES TAKING IT TO ROUND FOR ROUND, THE MAN DESERVES AND HAS MY UTMOST RESPECT
I love you man that's the BEST comment I've been reading since I'm a RUclips user for 6 years.. And just one thing if Mosley beat him that's just because of steroids because don't think Mosley was using steroids just once because that's wrong.. And I agree for the draw against Mayweather because DLH was the champ.. and you cannot take the belt from him after this fight : that's another robberie.. And against B-Hop I think DLH was doing well but was not in great shape and that's why he did quit..
after all these years i found it greatly ironic that vargas got knocked and beaten up the moment his own back touched the ropes after all time he mauled de la hoya along them (granted it was late in a grueling and brutal fight)
Damn just look at vargas during introductions... everything about his presence looks POWERFUL . Although he suffered a knockout loss in this fight , he gave Oscar one of the hardest fights of his career . But Dela Hoya is one of the greatest WWs of all time .
There have been plenty of fighters that have won titles at age 21 and 22. Tommy Hearns - 21, James Tony - 22, JCC Sr - 22, Ali - 22, Floyd Patterson - 22, Manny Pacquiao - 18(13 days before his 19th birthday). Vargas was 22 when he won the IBF title from Roman Campas.
Steroids don't help your chin, and Vargas was never the same after he fought Trinidad. But props to Vargas for never wanting an easy fight and doing it at such a young age.
Thats the attitude of any (most) fighter(s). Regardless of how he promoted the fight at press conferences and confidence he held in his abilities does not negate the fact his potential was not reached due to rushing a young stud against best in business. Just my opinion bro.
Vargas' win of over Winky Wright, although a close fight, was his most impressive victory considering that Wright went on to become a top p4p fighter. Vargas was rushed against Tito, but that is what made him as outstanding young fighter. Also Vargas' wins over Ike Quartey and then stopping Ross Thompson in the 4th was impressive. Thompson moved up to Super Middle Weight and went he distance with Jeff Lacy, who was built like a monster.
1) PEDs do more than just 'give you muscle'. 2) Muscle MAKES YOU MOVE, there is a difference between athletic muscle and bodybuilding muscle. The right type of muscle doesn't 'make you tight'... far from it.
Come on guys, Vargas was a very solid fighter, he gave Dela Hoya and Trinidad all they could handle. He did allot of talking but he fought with allot of heat and would not give up.
it was actually not close, Oscar won a clear decision on points. The thing I respect about Oscar above many of the greats of the last 30 years like Leonard,Lewis,Floyd,Chavez etc is that he never backed down or ducked from any fighter ever win lose or draw you cant say that about many so called greats of the past 30 years.
Vargas isn't the youngest champ in boxing history. He was 21 when he won his title? Mike Tyson was 20, Jose Pipino Cuevas was won the welterweight title 4 days after his 18th birthday and the topper, a record that will likely never be broken, Wilfredo Benitez won the WBA jr welter weight title from Antonio Cervantes at age 17 in 1976. I read your post twice and it does say Vargas was the youngest champ in boxing history and that is simply not true.
You could be right, but Pacquiao was just coming up in weight from lightweight and, I believe, it was not possible for him to go up all the way to 154. The "catch weight" made the fight possible. The odd-makers still favored dela Hoya to win the fight 4-1.
The juice never helped Vargas become a better fighter. The man was a tactician. A master of the conventional stance and offensive boxing. Physical ability was always second to his skill. This version of Vargas was all strength and rage. A bull brainlessly running his opponent down or Margarito without the superhuman chin. De La Hoya never finished Vargas' career, steroids did. If he was good for nothing else that night, it was disproving the heinous rumor that DLH had no chin.
Watch the fight between Vargas and Ike Quartey, then come back here and watch Vargas in this fight. Pay attention to Vargas, not his opponent. Do you see a difference in his performance?
De La Hoya got away with wearing a very unusual high protector in this fight that protected him from body shots. Mosley's father Jack made sure this did not occur by alerting the commission before the fight that they would not fight him if he wore this type of belt protector. This type of protector is not good for a guy that likes to throw body punches and Vargas was always a great body puncher.
Following the result of this fight, Vargas would test positive for "steroids" and be fined $100,000.00 This would signify the literal beginning to the end of his professional boxing career.
I agree with that. Lennox never ducked anybody either though. Everybody ducked him. Bowe threw the belt in the trash so he wouldnt ahve to fight Lennox
And I like your comment too because you are the only guy who like me speaks about DLH's interest in promotion at that time.. and that's why Arum Robbed him...
that says more about his conditioning coach than Mayweather. Oscar's bastardized version of the mayweather style was a semi-distaster, imo. You can't carry your left that low with the pretense of relying on your shoulder for defense and still keep so much weight forward on your front foot like Oscar continued to. Floyd does it sometimes as a ruse to draw leads, but he has the reflexes and familiarity with the style to 'break the rules' like that. Oscar wasn't even properly taught the rules
Vargas was on the down side here, IMO he was a much better boxer than he showed here. Especially against Winky Wright. All that muscle that Vargas put on only tires you out quicker and limited his flexibility. The muscle looks good, but unless you're naturally built it is not a good idea to put muscle on when your a boxer. Vargas was more successful when he was a little more loosely muscled. I have to had RIP Corrie Sanders, you are missed.
The fight would've been over faster had he still been with Alcazar, just as Foreman said. Mayweathers style for oscar allowed him to get hit more and was more a slugger style. Oscar's boxer puncher style from alcazar would've dominated Vargas and Ko'd him sooner I believe. This was the best Vargas though, better than the one that Tito beat. The one that TIto beat was faster, but weaker and alot less educated. This Vargas that Oscar fought was the hungriest, strongest and fiercest Vargas to date.
Vargas was a pretty good boxer if he was not thrown to the lion at an early age, at 22 he was thrown to the deadliest puncher tito and at 24 Oscar out classed him. He was mishandled and rushed to early in his career. Why would a talented kid like Vargas been given steriod? Also I hate Merchant for discrediting Vargas and called him glass jaw.
Lets make something clear, fighter and boxer isn't the same thing. I am a boxing fan and yes, I have been in the ring. Fighting is something different. I could do 1000 things fighting that I can't do boxing. MMA is more fighting than boxing. However, I prefer boxing. It's more of a sport. MMA you make a mistake and fight is over in 2 seconds. A lot of time the winner isn't the best fighter. Just because a little mistake or a slip.
the market for boxing generates this type of capital. overpricing through marketing and multi party involvement. look at hollywood and other sports pro and amateur(NCAA basketball and football). social plights dont come into the equation as the demand for high level performance in these fields of entertainment is a separate operation.
Same here since I didn't really understand when I was younger but I give him props he was the youngest fighter to ever win the middleweight title and was also the youngest American amateur champion ever and also he fought the best of the best back to back one after the other before he was barely 23
its not arithmatic, its boxing....it was a close fight, no doubt...I felt Felix pulled it out in the last few rounds by being the aggressor and chasing Oscar around the ring in his dresss (Oscars dress)..LOL
Oscar wanted Vargas to waera himself out by hitting nothing but air and shoulders and arms...thats why he adopted those defensive techniques. he still managed to land his hook though
I"m surprised Oscar didnt come out wearing a dress! Look at the bad ass look on Vargas. He sure thought he was the shit. He got beat up by a guy in a dress...LOL
The reason why he used it was implicit in the context of my post. It was not the 'why' that was in question, but the efficacy of the shell when unaccustomed to it's benefits, namely, negating the right hand of your opponent and opening the roll-right counter. Understand that Oscar's best weapon has always been his left hook; made entirely useless when improperly using the shell and squaring your hips with your arms at your side. Stay in school.
i lost all respect for vargas after he tested posititve for steroids after this fight. he bloated up to mega proportions right after and had to resort to fighting at middleweight. and still he wasnt the "old" vargas. what a shame.
It really was awful. He was naturally "neutral" or "square" like a Mexican fighter, and he was trying to force that shell when pressured. The result was standing square with one hand at his waist. Even worse, it neutralized his best punch inside. Shell is great for countering with the right hand, but a guy with a perfect left hook wastes his talents trying to tuck against the ropes. No matter, he stopped using it mid-range and found his target eventually.
Non of Robert Garcia's fighters know how to box.. Just look at margacheatto, Brandon Rios, Nonito.
Oscar de la HOya is a legend no complaints
Classic Oscar. What a legend.
Awesome!! Thanks for that! I was overseas in the military and missed this fight.
😊and 0 plop ppqoo1q1aa@quality qa a qa 1
"Stay away from guys who eat caviar" George Foreman, classic.
Well not everyone knows boxing the reason I know that is you think Trinidad beat him when all laws of basic arithmetic make that impossible. But still nice talking with you
man oscar's boxing is beautiful
I had a distinct feeling Oscar would win going in. I figured vargas would be to slow not throwing enough seeing how Oscar fights hes very accurate and precise and consistent. You to match it if you want to win Sorry you lossed 😮😮 Vargas.
Ultimamente algunos boxeadores Mexicaqnos son muy bocones!! Demuestrenlo en el ring no en los medios de comunicacion.
thanks for the video. it feels like i'm watching on payperview again.
I Love big George....he would be one of the twelve people of history I would invite to a dinner!
Oscar was a true champ, he fought the Greatest Fighters When they were in there prime... Was sad to see him go.
Noy noticisas
DLH was one of the best amateurs of all time, one of the best pro fighter of all time and yet at 39 is the best promoter in the business with Arum (a bad one). A true legend there is no one fighter since modern boxing history who achieve the half than DLH did.. never forget that .. a true Legend.. I miss these days of boxing, This was a great fight.
Why De la Hoya don’t fight significa Tito this way? 😂
Vargas's main accomplishments are getting knocked out by Tito, DLH, and Mosley.
Smart indeed on the part of Mayweather. My question is, How long has he asked for drug tests? I never heard of it before his path crossed with Pacquiao's, when it seemed like testing was used a way out of the fight. What are your thoughts?
Vargas simply couldn't control his emotions they got the best of him and it cost him a fight
A los dos Trinidad les gano La hoya corrio y a Varga una pela y lo noquio..
Great tactical fight ...
Vargas got, what he deserved...
Potato versus Potato, both weighing in at a resolution of 240p
If i am not mistaken, it was summer of 2002. I watched this fight in a bar in toronto. Vargas career was over at the Trinidad fight
Thank you for this post.
I've always wondered how he was able to deliver such accurate assessments of a fight when they get so intense and so brutal. I'd be shouting in the microphone like "oh shit, oh shit, he's got him, it's over, it's fuckin over" LOL
The best Mexican boxer I’ve ever seen was Salvador Sanchez what a nice man and great boxer
well, one thing you and I can agree on is that Sweet Pea was something else, right? I remember when Oscar threw like 8 punches and Whitaker eluded them all. That guy had some amazing skills! I"ll have to go watch the second fight between Shane and Oscar. Maybe it was closer than I recall!

thx bro
oscar alwayz makes that combat!!!
Lampley has great quotes at climatic moments.

De mis peleas preferidas, recuerdo cómo odiaba a De la Hoya y lo que sufrí en esta victoria se recuperó con el KO que le propinó B-Hop...
😂🎉
where????
Steroids don't help your chin, and Vargas was never the same after he fought Trinidad. But props to Vargas for never wanting an easy fight and doing it at such a young age.
Great fight from two warriors.
where?

Chavez with the disappointed Vargas because Oscar ko’d him twice very good and I loved it
Come on guys, Vargas was a very solid fighter, he gave Dela Hoya and Trinidad all they could handle. He did allot of talking but he fought with allot of heat and would not give up.
this is one of oscars greatest fights.
Bad blood always makes a good fight. These 2 really hated eachother
Damn Vargas was so much stronger than De La Hoya, No wonder De La Hoya said He'd never Fight Him,
oscar making a come back? he talks about it in my video
Vargas's translator is hilarious haha
it was actually not close, Oscar won a clear decision on points. That should have been a KD in round 1, the ropes saved Oscar
Vargas handlers ruined him badly smh
Had him fighting all these killers so young
Props to him tho

Why are you guys arguing, tito won you can't change that it was a good fight they are both legends.

damn i didnt know that, but u can tell he looks like mayweather with that shoulder roll
the defensive lessons he learned from Mayweather Sr helped Oscar avoid a lot of punishment
La esquina,perjudico a vargas,estan locos.
Best fight 2024 still
Golden beast boy ❤

ME PUEDEN RESOLVER MI DUDA..?? PORQUE FERNANDO VARGAS NO PIDIÓ LA REVANCHA ANTE DE LA HOYA..???
Buen Box el 100 por 100.
❤❤❤nice job,sir
Right, that's why MMA is growing so fast..

i dont even like oscar and wasnt a big vargas fan either......but this was a good fight!
Awsome fight!!!
great fight!

"he did not have a six pack in his chin" lolll
Both great fighters ..
im a southpaw, just sayin ...
i remember i was never a really big fan of vargas, but now i am, there should be more fighters today like vargas, a true warrior. viva vargas!!! :)

OMG. i never knew Robert Garcia trained Vargas lol
Any fighter that has juiced loses all credibility.
Oscar wanted Vargas to waera himself out by hitting nothing but air and shoulders and arms...thats why he adopted those defensive techniques. he still managed to land his hook though
on the cool....Bowe had Holyfield by like 30 lbs bro. Thats a helluva advantage
Damn i remember watching this fight threw my neighbors window lol. when i was 12yr old
I"m surprised Oscar didnt come out wearing a dress! Look at the bad ass look on Vargas. He sure thought he was the shit. He got beat up by a guy in a dress...LOL

Is that Robert Garcia behind Vargas when they announced his name?
Man how important was de la Hoyas left jab during his career. Wow a thing of beauty
Floyd Mayweather Senior was Oscars Trainer for this fight
