The film is based on a book by Dr Drauzio Varela, one of the most important figures currently in the country with regard to medical education and social causes.
The focus on AIDS is more because it was an epidemic that he saw up close and marked him, both in the prisons here and at the time when he was practicing in NY.
There is a lot that goes unnoticed without knowing the whole context of the country: The pavalhão that was invaded was one of the least dangerous and the detainees were, in general, those who had little time in the system, and were more innocent so to speak.
Police officers from ROTA entering and killing have more to do with the fact that at the time and during most of the 70-90s, killing was her modus operandi.
Another important thing, is that the reason many people recommend the film: We Brazilians have a hateful relationship with those in prison, and their murder by ROTA has long been seen as acceptable. The film kind of took that notion out of a lot of people's heads.

Exactly man, and the whole murder was pretty much like that and even worse. The record shows that every riot squad officer had tactical masks on so the survivors wouldn't recognize them after; they shot whole cells of inmates indiscriminately; they made some of the remaining inmates carry the corpses out of the building and then executed them. Some survivors said that those who splashed blood on the officers when going down the drenched stairs were executed too. The "long live the riot squad" thing actually did happen.
The book ends with the testimony of one survivors, I think it was the one who lied down and blended with the corpses. He said that his mom had sent him a letter a few days before the murder saying that she had a bad feeling about something about to go down in jail, and asked him to read a specific bible quote and pray upon it. After it all went down he turned to religion and went after the quote. It was Psalm 91:7:
A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand, it shall not come nigh thee.

Carandiru (2003) é o oitavo longa-metragem de ficção de Hector Babenco (1946). O filme é uma adaptação do livro de memórias Estação Carandiru (1999), do médico e escritor Dráuzio Varella (1943)

Funny story: I got into medicine because of this story. Not the film exactly, but the book it is based on. It's about a doctor that does voluntary work in Carandiru, and every chapter he tells us about an inmate or guard life story, a medical case during the 90s HIV pandemic, and even about what how the first Factions of organized crime (something like cartels, but not the same) came to be because of how shitty the life conditions and human rights of the prisioners were, and, in the last chapters, about the massacre.
This book changed my life, because I didn't want to go to finish study anymore and just wanted to be a cook and smoke weed (what isn't wrong if you like it! I still love to doing both things), now I'm doing what I love! hahahahahaha the book wasnt officialy translated to english, unfortunately, but if you have the guts, you should definitely try to read it thru google translator hahahaha

Brazilian prisons are pretty much as the movie shows, there are very few exceptions.
But back then was not controlled by different national gangs such a Comando Vermelho, Primeiro Comando da Capital, Familia do Norte, etc. It became even more violent but mostly because of these factions fighting for control instead of just police killing everyone once every now and then.
The state over here cares not about it's innocent citizens, and much less for incarcerated ones.

I worked two years together with a ROTA policeman who was in the massacre of prisoners seen in the film, of course I never asked anything about what happened that day. He was sentenced to 150 years in prison, but since it was an veredict given to all the policemen that are there that day, he probably must have managed to reverse the conviction later in a solo trial.
I don't know if he's still in the police force (he was a firefighter when a meet hin, coll guy....but again, knowing about the carandiru, that feel more strange).
Probably what happened was what was shown in the film. In order not to harm Colonel Ubiratã and the governor of São Paulo, they held the trial as long as possible. The trial start 20 years later.
ROTA, like BOPE, is the elite of the troop of the Military Police of the state of São Paulo.
But the difference is that the track record of abuses and extra-judicial killings is well known in the case of ROTA.
There is a book about it here, called ROTA 66: The journalist says in it that 70 policemen were responsible for 70% of all the killing done by the battalion - The number could be as high as 2000, the majority in suspicious situation.
So, of all the branches of the police that could have entered Carandiru that day, Rota was the worst choice.

It's necessary tell too that the Govern of the State of São Paulo has many conections with criminal organizations. If in Rio de Janeiro (and Elite Squad shows this) there's a war between militias and criminal organizations, in São Paulo there's such a "cease fire", with the Gov hidding some dates about the violence.

They did an spin off series like this called Carandiru Outras Estórias (Carandiru: another story) and indeed each episode was based on one of the characters we've seen in the movie. Each episode either gives more background into what they did to get into prison or it shows what became of their lives after they survived the massacre. It is a lot like Oz, except they´re based on real accounts that Drauzio Varella heard from real inmates. Drauzio Varela is a famous doctor in Brazil, he wrote the book that based the movie script, Estação Carandiru (Carandiru Station, is a subway station in front of the former penitentiary). Drauzio really worked as a volunteer in carandiru, because he made his career in an upper class hospital in São Paulo, but he also thinks is important to work closer to the poorer populations, so that is why he volunteered in Carandiru in the late 80s, early 90s, during the worst of the AIDS pandemic, because he thought it would be a focus of dissemination of the disease and no one would bother to talk about prevention to inmates. He claims, although he changed the innmates names for the book, cause they admit to some serious crimes, all the stories were real, or at least, he wrote them exactly as he heard them. The commanding officer who is said to have ordered the massacre, Colonel Ubiratan Guimarães, was initially sentenced to 632 years in prison but he was never arrested. He was elected to congress 10 years after the massacre, by voters who considered him a hero for commanding the bloodbath. He was found dead in his apartment in 2006 in an apparent result of a failed robbery, but nothing was stolen. Meanwhile, one of Brazil's biggest criminal organizations toda, the PCC (Primeiro comando da capital or First Command of the Capital) is said to have formed in 1993 as a response to the event, as the surviving prisioners joined forces with other gang members to provide protection against the police.

No começo tá contando as histórias, vem o futebol, a comemoração e “do nada” o massacre, tudo muito rápido, talvez desconexo.

I remember when i first watched this movie, i was so shocked. I could not believe something like this could happen. But then again i was really young.
I know some people who have visited the site where the massacre happened (now it's a museum), and they say there's this really off energy. Idk if it's just projection because they know what happened, but i think it must be unsettling being in a place where so many people died.
Also I don't know if you noticed but the actor who played Lady is Rodrigo Santoro. He also plays Hector in Westworld.

GG, i don't think you will read this, but I can tell you, the massacre was that way.
The father of one of my most close friend was there in the Riot side. It was something of his second week in the riot force who controled rebellions in 1992. Unfortunely, he bragged himself about the numbers and the "points". He also spoke that, in this time, It was a rebellion MUTCH BIGGER and MUTCH MORE BLOODY in Mato Grosso do Sul, but the news didn't show it because of the bad repercution on the Carandiru Massacre.
In 2002 I was cursing middle school close to the prision when the government demolished this horrendous building and It was close to a purg in the mind of the city. Know that this monument of incapability from the government was down was awsome.
I realy like your reacts because: 1-Its important for Us people of Brazil that this kind of not beatyfull side of our society be shown to the world (MUTCH more today, with this BASTARD PRESIDENT of ours), 2- Its beatyfull notice how the "gringos" react when they see the reality of our contry. Here the media and publicity for the world shows peace and integration, but hide the truth of exploration and encarceration of black/poor people. nearly 40% of our "jail population" (don't know the right term) is in provisional arrest and not sentenced. The MAJORITY of them was caught whit nearly nothing of drugs (I'm lawyer and had a case in whith one guy was caught holding 1 joint) and they are convicted whith drug trafficking.
Anyway, I loose myself in the comment. auhauhuahuah
Love your channel, keep reacting :)

If you want to keep watching some Brazillian classics, I suggest Lisbela and the Prisoner and A Dog's Will. They lean more towards comedy, and show more a view of the lives of the people in the Northeastern countryside, where there are a LOT of poor and struggling people, since they rely on crops to live, and it can be really arid there.

The beads around some of the people's necks are called "guia" (wich means "guide"). It's a necklace used by practioners of umbanda and/or candomblé, both religions with roots on Africa. Umbanda is originally brazilian, but with almost the same belief system as candomblé . Some of the rituals and the "terreiro" (the place where the cults take place) are different. Both are very common in Brazil, even with all the prejudice by some agressive christian-cults (like the well-known televangelists). Remember that Brazil was the main destination of all enslaved people in Africa. In that way, our society still holds lots of prejudice against black-originated culture. Even in the movie you will see that: the evangelical cult was full of people, and that was a guy alone at the umbanda/candomblé altar.

very well explained diogo! some deities from umbanda (brazilian indiginous and african beliefs) and candomble (african beliefs) are linked to cristianism as it was forbiden to practice african rituals. for example iemanja (goddes of the water) is linked to mary mother of jesus. also practiced in cuba as santeria.

Hey man... great video. I'm from Brazil and your fan, and you take the point about the history of the movie. This is really a OK movie, not a 5 star movie. Many inmates at that time say they contracted AIDS through the bites of dogs, who bit people who had the virus and then bite with their mouths full of blood others who did not.
I wanna see you react one move called "Bicho de Sete Cabeças" (its a brazilian term for something very difficult to understand, do or solve, the literal translation would be seven-headed animal). It's about a guy, who his father finds a marijuana cigarette in his backpack, and interns him in a psychiatric clinic, like he has some kind of mental problem. It's based on real facts.

Each story shown in the movie was an episode on the show. The movie kinda edited and put everything together, that's why it felt a bit rushed and a bit all over the place. About the film, I think they didn’t focus on political issues because the focus was really on the inmates, and in reality what they spend there is not much importance for them outside politics, the thing was to survive and follow their own rules, they knew that they could not count on government aid.

Octuber 3, inmate diary.' which is the day after the massacre. Fleury actually died in 2022 and faced no consequences for giving that call, still makes me sick to my stomach.
