Murderers ,
You could have relocated p-22 !!
Exactly. He should have been relocated a long time ago, instead of trying to keep him as some kind of mascot.
How I agree with you. Beyond sad and disturbing.
@@Jonb173 Exactly 💯
I’m heart broken. This is cruel.
he was the best kitty ever, love how he jumps over the fence. Wish I could give him some treats.

Poor thing. He spent his whole life alone. Rest peacefully our big furry friend.
It’s not like it was forced to be alone. They’re solitary creatures
@@jescollo Not always. They do mate you know. He was probably looking for a female, and that's how he got hit by a careless California driver.

Hard to understand why he wasn’t just flown to the middle of Montana and given a chance.
Because he got used to humans, cougars have a territory of over 65 miles they roam!
thatd be humane but would cost more sadly.
He was old and with only one eye, he wouldn't have survived. Where my daughter lives near the Canadian border, it was 0 degrees yesterday with snow drifts 3 to 4 ft high. Living his entire life in So. Cal. he couldn't have survived the bitter cold.
Now if only they could round up all of the other mountain lions living right next to large populations and move them to open lands where they will have a chance to survive like mountain lions. Have our confused governor put the state's money to more resourceful purposes..
Dude... most of California is uninhabited. They could move him 30 miles east and he'd be in the middle of nowhere.
Poor kitty. I hope they name the wildlife bridge after him. RIP.
I TOTALLY AGREE!!
P-22???
@@idkidk8278 Yeah, don't know how else the cougar would be recognized. Sometimes other animals get known by ID markers, like eagles. Follow the Decorah eagles. D1 is typically recognized as the first offspring to have gotten a tracker. Her parents were known only as Dad Decorah and Mom Decorah. Those raised by the Wildlife Center of VA got known by initials that were band letters, like the well-known NX, NV and NZ. NX was treated twice so many knew her well. Only when that facility took in an animal on a permament basis owing to health making them non-releasable did they get names, like their resident eagle Buddy who needs beak coping continually to be able to eat on his own (he'd starve if he ever escaped). As such, it was appropriate that P-22 never got a full name unless he became a resident somewhere.
Safe journey, P-22. Like OR-7, you lived quite a remarkable life.
We learned a lot about big cats through the eyes of P-22! 😢RIP
We're in their territory. We need to let them live. Poor lion never found any other lions. What loneliness. 😭
So true this is so cruel they did it to a Cougar in Vegas too!
Move!
He did live... until he got old & weak which is why he had resorted to hunting pets in residential neighborhoods towards the end. Putting him down was the humane thing to do
Too bad he didn't make it to Sigfried and Roys to court one of their big cats or found one of the local elites with an unsprayed lioness as an exotic pet to knock up.
@@_DB.COOPER lol I believe a lot of people have moved from California.
This is unfortunate. He was only doing what they do naturally. This makes me sad😢
He was very old ( age 12 ) for a wild coiugar and was suffering from health issues as well as injuries from being hit by a car. Due ti his compromised health and abilities he was being forced into neighborshoods to try and score an easy meal of pets. He was too old and failing to be left in the wild any longer and humane euthanasia was the highest choice oir the old soldier. Relocating him woiuld have been disasterous as well as he, miost likely, would have ended uo tangling with anither male cougar iover terrirtory and possible killed by a yunger and stronger animal. Why relocation is nt done often and usually only with females, not males.
Wow that was sad. He looked lost in an ever evolving world.. he resembled a lot of people I believe.. RIP22

P-22 DESERVES A STAR ON THE WALK OF FAME
some of the comments here are atrocious. No respect for wildlife whatsoever
The people in the neighborhoods where he roamed, were more than likely, leaving food out for him in some capacity. Hence why he was spending all his time there, instead of the wilderness. Make no mistake, these people who thought they were helping him, were the #1 reason he was euthanized.
I remember back working up in Griffith Park for the Greek theatre in 2014. We had to have radio contact at all times and had a specific call for P-22. Never saw him in person. But would later see news reports of his presence at night right where I was passing through or working in the day. RIP P-22
Very sad!!! I'm skeptical about the alleged eye injury. On the day that they tranquilized him, there was no mention of an injury to the eye. If they saved him from misery by killing him, that is one thing; but if they killed him for convenience, that is NOT acceptable. They could have driven him back to the mountains, even if he were to take the "perilous" trip back into town. At least, he would have had a Cougar's fighting chance to survive!!! Learn to live with the wildlife.
He was already a very old cat that outlived his species lifespan. He would have died alone or by the hands of a human who would be more concerned of their survival or pets.
At least in his final hours he was around entities that cared for him and thus was perhaps in the few times of his life. Not alone.
Not a bad way to go out.
They did mention the eye injury when he was captured. He had a fractured skull from being hit by a car as well as organ failure.
The LA Times reporter who profiled him covered the news conference announcing his death. She said all of the scientists there were in tears. They loved him like we did.
Right they could of let him go so I could hunt him with my dogs, god mountain lion is so tasty
Should have put down the humans who complained.
@@koreyb Poor SOY BOY.
Such a shame. The big cats are vanishing due to human's selfishness and inconsideration. And their habitat is shrinking more everyday. To me, the life of P-22 is more precious than the lives of every illegal immigrant that sleazes its way across our border.
Well, I would say rather than the 'illegal immigrants', the 'protected class' that are killing and robbing with impunity for the last 6 years!!

The insistence of having the mountain lion in a lonely habitat no longer able to give him a good life, instead of relocating him to an area where it can mate and hunt is the dumbest part.
LOL WHERE IS THAT??? THERE IS AN OVERPOPULATION PROBLEM FOR PUMAS - ONE LION WILL CLAIM 75 TO ONE HUNDRED SQUARE MILES AS "HIS" AND P22 WAS TO OLD TO FIGHT BACK AND THE OTHER LIONS WOULD INJURE HIM AND HE WOULD DIE OF STARVATION .... HAHAHAHAH OR I WOULD CATCH HIM EATING MY LIVESTOCK AND TURN HIM INTO A RUG ON MY FLOOR
You didn’t have to kill P-22! Sadly these “humans” who mistreated him were the real animals!
True
I'm confused... there's no audio for chunks of the video.. Why was he euthanized???
He SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELOCATED!!
To where? Mountain lions are territorial and need large areas to thrive. If they had placed P-22 into another area he was not familiar with, he no doubt would have run into another mountain lion, and given his age and health issues, most likely would not have survived much longer.
Yes to my dinner table
@@lillobo1 They should have done it years ago! There are vast territories to relocate younger ones. There are refuges for old lions. C'mon.
@@lcvb1624, and just where would those 'vast territories' be located? And oh yes, they could have foreseen this. Yeah, right. Let's take young lions out of their natural habitat so we can house them in a refuge. P-22 was fortunate enough to live as long as he did where he did, naturally.

They said they were going to relocate the lion. Not kill him.
Exactly what i expected to happen. Wildlife officials will not let any wild animal who does what they know best, survive.
You mean... an extremely old animal with eye injuries & organ failure should have been forced to keep living in pain to appease your ignorant entitlement??? Gross
I agree. They’re some of the worst for wildlife there is.
Euthanized? Murdered is the best way to describe it. Put him in a crate and ship him to live with other mountain lions if he was a problem. Even life with one eye is better than being murdered.

I moved here in February 2021 from Chicago and The idea of mountain lions in urban areas is the most foreign thing to me, (Even the amount of coyotes we have here is new to me) but when I learned about P22 I was fascinated and enthralled. I even got to work on a TV production that took us to the museum of natural History overnight and I got to see the P22 exhibit in the basement a couple months later we heard that he was unwell, sent to the San Diego zoo and later euthanized. I'm so sad about his death but ultimately I'm so happy to live in a place that values native wildlife.
I think it would be cool if we had another Hollywood mountain lion, but the fact that they have such a small range in Griffith Park and have to cross so many freeways to get there also breaks my heart.
I'm excited to see what California is beautiful wildlife has to offer
Other news outlets said that they were going to put him in a sanctuary, or release it to another environment where it won’t be a dabger to other peoples pets or individuals
He was the most talented and underrated mountain lion of our generation
This Kitty should have been relocated to appropriate location early on. So he could have lived a more normal life.
Maybe next time a similar event occurs someone will do the right thing.
If that was my wife walking my dog and the mountain line jumped out and killed it like that she would be traumatized forever. The way they just brushed over that was insensitive.

i never really thought about humans’ intervention in wildlife until i read stories about P-22, RIP baby
He did nothing wrong... Man's encroachment on his living area was the problem...
We've lost 69 % of wildlife globally in just 50 years. 1/3 of all marine life. Rivers are drying up all over the world. Fish kills of millions of fish are happening where its never happened before in all the large rivers and their tributaries. Huge numbers of ruminates like deer, elk, and big horn sheep are dying due to CWD and EHD. By the time it takes you to read this, about 1 minute, another area of land, the size of 27 football fields has been destroyed. P-22 had it better than most, but still, even he couldn't escape.

Such a beautiful animal. This story is so sad.
Also, I promise you P-22 is not the only mountain lion in those hills. I once saw 2 at the same time while hiking to the Hollywood sign early one morning. I'm certainly no expert but the two I saw also looked underfed, in my opinion.
