I suspect the actress portraying Fiona Harvey ( Muir) was so spot on , is because possibly Richard Gadd let her listen to the alleged voice mails she sent him. Also I tend to believe she did stalk him. Because of the interviews that Laura Walker an ex MP's wife , who claims Fiona (then Muir) stalked her for 5 years and accused her of harming her disabled child. After she had to dismiss her for misconduct.

@@LadyLuck13 no, I absolutely would not. For one thing, being held accountable for your crimes actually looks better than committing the harassment and stalking without being held accountable, and she did a bad job denying the latter Plus, no one important was believing the whole entire story anyway, or had even heard of it. I watched the series and also frequently watch RUclips commentators, and I didn't learn her name until SHE did this interview. If she has to report things like that to employers and the Bar for legal professionals, that's all she needed to do to protect her job and career. She's clearly expressed that only 20-something morons would believe this, no one important, so it's really her own fault that anyone else made the connection.

What I want to know is WHY we are all fascinated with Fiona/Martha and knowing the truth about what happened, yet much less so when it comes to “Darrien”. The REAL villain of the story. If I have understood the story correctly, had Richard not been assaulted and taken advantage of by “Darrien” then entire situation with Fiona/Martha may never have escalated to the point it did. If anyone needs to be held to account its “Darrien”. IF Richard’s story is true (and it very well could be) then the chances that “Darrien” only ever attacked him is just about zero. Vile people like that never stop at one.

I reckon you're missing a few, real time, pointers. 1. A psychiatrist can only ever base a diagnosis from the person that is relaying their story. He/she has no first hand knowledge of mental health issues. 2. The actress was chosen for the part because of the look & feel of the actual offender, it is then down to the actors portrayal of the character, that will be based on many other things that she has heard, seen or read about. 3. Fiona Harvey has, since the release of the mini series, had many interviews with media, this would make each one more comfortable than the next. As a seasoned PI, I looked for the tell tale signs that I think you might have missed, or just using the wrong methods needed to decipher a complex person/story.

The seasoned Crime Interviewsers scored in the mid to high 90% compared to the regular people at high 60%.

I’m struggling with being so neutral about this. I know you say she didn’t exhibit any behaviours that may be interpreted as her having ‘mental disorders’ but you don’t need to be a psychiatrist to know that even the worlds worst psychopaths are incredibly charming when they need to be. Could it not be the case that she is just capable of behaving herself for the sake of this one interview? It’s already documented that she left several hours of highly abusive voicemails after meeting with the Daily Mail journalist. She may not have been ‘lying’ entirely but I think that’s beside the point. She willingly put herself out there in the public domain. She could have had private accounts and not responded to any internet sleuths. I’m sure, if she indeed DOES have any kind of legal background, that would stand more in her favour if she did intend to take on Netflix/ Gadd et al. I’m not entirely sure the public has a preoccupation with the ‘truth’ here, but more where she intends going with her accusations when willingly and rather unskilfully declared herself to be the character and then proceeded to give the audience what they wanted. THATS what is interesting.

Totally agree you are the voice of reason in what I would call a sea of confusion. Tv/Movie drama has always had licence to go beyond fact. If plays/films/tv series were based entirely and solely on fact then we wouldn’t watch them because they’d be as dull as Sh%t. So Gadd’s creative work was always going to be exaggerated if it was to be successful.
That said, stalking behaviour is very disturbing. I have been stalked twice in my life. I’m in my 60s now but the memory of those experiences stays with me and it taught me a hard lesson in the importance of healthy boundaries. Not that I’m saying that stalking victims are responsible for what happens to them, but even Gadd’s depiction of himself shows what leaky boundaries can lead to.
It seems to me that the truth of what actually happened rests between Gadd and Fiona. Why the rest of us needs to know is beyond me but in one way I’m glad that Gadd made the series because it highlights an important issue that rarely gets talked about in that stalking is complicated.
As for Fiona today, well I feel sorry that she’s been outed and exposed in the way that she has. I watched the Piers Morgan interview and I felt sorry that she was being exposed in this way. True, she would have agreed to go on the programme, but given the level of social media scrutiny I wonder how much choice she would have had.
Interestingly, I found her to be odd in her responses but also truthful in parts. For example, Piers kept pushing her for her legal qualification grades and Fiona kept repeating that she didn’t do an honours degree she just did the ordinary degree. Piers repeatedly asked her for her grades and she simply repeated that she did an ordinary degree. I did a google search of Scottish Law Degrees and it seems that if you do an honours degree it is graded in the same way as an English degree would be. But if you do an ordinary degree you either pass or fail and there are no grades. So in this instance Piers didn’t understand the answer he was being given and Fiona failed to recognise this and kept repeating her answer. All this tells us is that there was a genuine misunderstanding between two healthy individuals!
Stalking is an interesting and complicated thing. It can be disturbing and frightening for the victim, or should I say recipient of unwanted attention. But we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that there is another victim, i.e. the stalker. And I think that this is what Baby Reindeer wanted to get across. There are no winners here, just individuals trying to make sense of their life experiences. And we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that people change over time. The Fiona of twenty years ago will not be the same Fiona of today. Very few people remain the same across their lifespan.

It may be our discomfort with handling ambiguity. And it leads to really boring comments! Thanks for your critical thinking skills.

  • @Archie0pteryx
    @Archie0pteryx Месяц назад +2

One thing that makes me think she might not be lying and it looked like she might be in the interview is just maybe she was taking a moment to decide what information she wants to share on tv, like sometimes you have to kind of assess the relevancy of something or asses whether a certain topic is something you want to be scrutinized and this would be x1000 on a big interview like this. For example Morgan started asking about her personal dating life and she had to remind him that was a topic she wouldn't discuss, yet he persisted.
This happens a lot when people are trying to push someone into a discussion where part of it is none of their business
Being flustered and the possible merging of two people into one character are great points

I think the e-mails, voice mails are all true, but the rest is heavily exaggerated or made up like the prison sentence. She lied about the number because she didn't want to sound crazy, and would be embarrassed by her obsessive behaviour 12 years later. She did say, "even if that was correct, I still have a case for defamation" and that's true. It was a crucial sentence, picked up by Piers. So she thinks there must be someone else who did all those things, glassed hi,, punched the rans, felt him up by the canal. She is Martha, but a lot of Martha's portrayal is not real. The Doc is very wrong at that point imho.

Yes ... I have the link for the Scottish Times article from 2000 .
At 31 she was briefly hired as a trainee for lawyer Laura Wray in 1997. It was despicable how Fiona behaved in the office. Undermining Laura, stalking her at home, trying to destroy her MP husband's reputation. Abusing staff. Turning clients away. Had to be escorted out of the office.
Just before that she'd been stalking another MP, swearing & haranguing him at meetings.
All the things she did to Richard Gadd. She was born in 1966 & he was 1989.
Apparently she had trainee positions at 3 law firms at the time, but was quickly sacked - she was never on contract as a proper trainee lawyer.
I question whether she was ever engaged as a full time lawyer but only holds a law degree she likes to boast about.
She will never change. She will never mature or get kinder. She will always be a volatile, swearing, attention seeking abuser... only older.

Firstxand foremost, Fiona Harvey made a mistake agreeing to be interviewed on television. It was a dreadful performance, and she placed herself at risk of public ridicule. The need to do this has shades of narcissism and bipolarity, à la Amber Heard. That said, she should have been clearer about whether she knew Gadd or not - she vacillated consistently.
The second and more serious issue is that Harvey's identity was made public by《Internet sleuths.》This has some serious issues regarding personal privacy and what we call 《le droit d'oublie》in French (the right to forget). Will this become a trend in the future ? I hope not.
Finally, historian Anthony Beevor says that most war films are unwatchable because they take liberties with facts. Most people lose sight of that. The actress who played Martha in《Baby Reindeer》 played a role, not Fiona Harvey 10 years ago. Most celebrities have a public persona that is very different from their personalities.

I read some opinions that criticise Piers Morgan for his having exploited Harvey's psychological frailties. There's clearly something there and this criticism is valid. That said, Harvey volunteered to be interviewed and she said as much at the beginning. According to the opinion pieces critical of Morgan, Harvey now feels she was exploited and wants to be paid £ 4000/lb rather than £ 1 for the interview.
I'm not competent to diagnose Fiona Harvey, and Dr Das has shared a nuanced analysis with his audience. If I understand correcty, Dr Das believes that she's competent to speak for herself, therefore, she's exercising her rights to share her story even if it's to her detriment. Some interesting points especially about two characters being merged together. I agree that it is weird that there weren’t the usual caveats at the beginning of each episode.
Is it possible that she is now obsessed/stalking someone else which is why she can talk so disparagingly about RG?
Martha’s character was grandiose, lying about the people she worked with, Fiona did seem quite self important.
Fiona identified herself as Martha, RG didn’t, even though she was easily found via the curtains joke she could have gone one PM to say that she definitely wasn’t. She was saying I am Martha but the facts are different.
The red flag for me was why couldn’t she remember what her degree was. Even if it wasn’t a good degree, if you had a degree even a low grade one you could easily reply to that question but she didn’t.
She now seems to be enjoying her five minutes of fame and various law suit threats that may not amount to much.

I had to create over a dozen email addresses to escape my stalker. Plus phone numbers, phone devices, moved entire states across a county multiple times to escape my stalker.
I’m surprised Gadd didn’t do the same and change his email address, his social media etc.
My social media got hijacked by my stalker because he even admitted himself he was ‘obsessed’ with my social media.
Being on the receiving end of a stalker is really really scary and requires often having to change whole lives to escape them.
I understand for every stalker action it takes an equal and opposite reaction because as a victim you’re constantly on the defence. Plus it’s almost impossible to predict where and when and how the next attack is going to come from because technology is so entrenched in our lives, but most people don’t fully understand how even phones work.
I personally feel the Darrien character is way way scarier and more problematic and liable to reoffend. He started the trauma in Gadd with the r***s and grooming.
The whole thing feels like revenue raising for Piers Morgan and Netflix. They’re not showing evidence they have or don’t have because all this controversy is making so much money for them.
I’m not saying Fiona is innocent or guilty I really don’t know. But she had a right to reply, and I think she held up pretty well under intense circumstances.
Baby Reindeer is an accurate expose on how trauma can skew someone and cause them to make bed decisions. The SA scenes were SO spot on.
I personally think Darrien should be the public’s focus because men like that are predators, but predators with power. Fiona/Martha is low hanging fruit who is an easy target to blame in the series.
It’s an amazing show and despite the complexities it’s spellbinding, and I believe Gadd gave Martha humanity. Darrien is scary and the real villain here.

    • @Dominique_99
      @Dominique_99 Месяц назад +1

I don’t agree with this. Martha and Darrian are both bad. They are just different. Martha is just an imperfect perpetrator like most and Darrian is seen as more the villain we are used to and comfortable with. In reality we are more likely to run across Martha than Darrian. A mortal villain who is sometimes good and sometimes bad, who we might feel sorry for or even love at times, than Darrian. But even Darrian is out there, as the guy who mentors you and then abuses you or the church leader who abuses your trust. They are all out there. Martha’s character was not the fall guy she was just the one he connected too. He trauma bonded to her and he couldn’t get away from her. When I was being stalked my mum said I feel sorry for him. I’m not violent but I could have stabbed her with a fork. But I recognised watching Baby Riendeer his need to know where Martha was. Because if you know where your stalker is you somehow feel safer, otherwise you don’t know when or where they might be. It’s hard to not go back and ignore them. That’s why so many women go back to violent offenders. It feels safer.

    • @rachellewis5016

@@Dominique_99 I’m not saying Martha wasn’t dangerous. What I’m surprised about is the person who did the most harm to him, Darrien, his identity is conspicuously absent.
I understand trauma bonding I was also trauma bonded. But I’m unclear what level of risk Martha posed to Gadd as opposed to Darrien.
I also believe stalkers aren’t all the same, which is why they categorise them. My stalker is an ex partner and someone I know from high school. But in the context of a relationship he started and set up his stalker behaviours from the very beginning. Without my knowledge or awareness beyond I knew my emails were being hacked.
I do believe these different distinctions between stalkers matter in terms of risk assessments for victims.
I’d actually argue we’re more likely to come across Darriens than Marthas. Because of the exact reasons you highlight, Darrien is every man in a position of power/trust who uses that power/trust to find victims and cover his tracks. The Darriens of the world don’t just abuse adults, they abuse children also.
I’ve yet to read a stalker story which involves fixation on a child. I’m sure they’re out there, but it seems more adult to adult fixated patterns.

I agree with your finding, I've said most of this already on the Internet already.
Mannerisms aren't usually written down in the scrpt Dr. Das. I'll share a real (unproduced screenplay or two with you upon request) and you'll see that generally writers allow the director/actor to interpret their characters themselves. I can write a character who can be nice one minute and menacing the next but the most I might tell the read/director/actor at most something like this (formatting is different of course):
    =================
A menacing look crosses Martha's face.
Martha: "Are you implying I'm stalking you Reindeer? Is that it?!"
    =================
And that's at most and only if the character isn't already boiling over from the previous back and forth. Often the actor won't need that much, but this would depend on how good they are, how good the script is and how far into the story they are.
Assuming the real Martha (and assuming it's Fiona Harvey) with all the overblown claims - if that's what they are, she probably will be feeling outed and demonized
Ms. Harvey does appear to have a personality disorder but that's not my field and no one can tell without properly assessing her.
And worse the bloody American lawyers are trying to figure out what will go down if she takes them to court, but since everyone (save for Netflix) is based in the UK, it's UK law that will likely apply.

I think because a lot of people had already seen news articles from years ago of her harassment on a family that went on for quite some time and her hundreds of Facebook posts on her page which she had public, so they weren’t just going off the interview. I’m sure one day there were atleast 50 Facebook posts maybe even close to 100 of her typing out her thoughts, so I believe people could see her obsessiveness. Also now Kier Starmer has released that she sent him over 250 emails or something. Yes the truth is likely somewhere in between as obviously the story has been dramatised in some ways.
The scene near the end of that show where he’s listening to that voicemail of her talking about the toy reindeer and how she didn’t have a good childhood, that could potentially lead to a personality disorder or something where someone then develops the same behaviour as Martha, I think people don’t realise this and just assume people just decide to be like that. Let’s say if it is mostly true, I’m guessing that she she just doesn’t realise how obsessive her behaviour is and that it’s not normal to be sending that many messages or she has a hard time controlling herself. Anyway I don’t know but I do think Gadd did a great job portraying a stalker character and what they are actually like in real life.

So many gross inconsistent for a person with a “photographic memory”. Not fair? Ok, she told Piers that she got off Facebook yesterday. Two days after that comment she posted 118 times in one day on Facebook. That’s just one of her accounts. So 100 short emails or texts in one day for her looks normal. Is she lying? I can’t bet my life but if forced, she’s lying.

PS - the 118 posts were basically the same rant about Piers & Gadd over and over.

I’ll just say that if Gadd hadn’t been stalked I don’t think it would have been significant enough for him to do a show or anything about. He was already SAed and that trauma would have been potentially enough for him to work through along with struggling with his sexual identity.
As a survivor of stalking for about 2 years and my ex went to jail twice all of the things you have said crossed my mind before I saw most of the interview. And I didn’t watch the interview on Piers channel because I didn’t want to give her a platform if she was his stalker.
However, after watching her I’ve come to believe she could be Gadds stalker and they just didn’t think it would get so big. It’s not so much the lying it’s also the minimising and the occasional nasty remarks she just can’t help but throw in there. I appreciate that you are much more experienced in this field than I am however, I recognise this from my stalker. He also would minimise and tell lies. I once had someone say I know not is happening because you don’t have any bruises. A police officer told me he told me that he said we were still in a relationship and just had a blow up and I was reporting him to get even. I was like seriously. I’m going to spend 2 hours at the police station terrified crying with a toddler to get even? When I could be at home watching tv, playing with my kids? Maybe some women do that but it was just ridiculous to me. Back then it took the police 2 hours to write a report they were so slow. Anyway, back to Martha or Fiona the fact that she’s now asking for a million dollars off Piers also makes me think it’s her. The mannerisms don’t have to be exactly the same, it was 10 years ago. I also think the humming she does may be coping technique to attempt to control herself she developed over the years so she doesn’t yell at people. Anyway, maybe something to think about Dr Das from someone who has been stalked rather than a stalker.

In the begining Donnie the character types “this is a true story” it is the 100% true story of Gadd writing Baby Reindeer a play about him being stalked. It never appears otherwize and there is a disclaimer at the end of every episode. Gadd has never confirmed the identity of any of the people the characters were based on!

I havent seen BR so had no prejudice watching the Fiona Harvey interview. My thought was she had asd. I don't agree she's mentally ill. The biggest diservice Piers did Fiona was not knowing what an ordinary degree was and the comments hung her for not remembering her grades.

Sorry , you got the wrong marsupial. Its a Kangaroo Court not a Koala Court . I get this image in my head of a bunch fuzzy little Koalas sitting a gum tree pontificating over Fiona Harvey! LOL.

She is been starked by the internet. I want to know why am I so captivated by it? Finally she gets her just dessert? Can you please look into theses questions. I have only seen snippets of the program. Who sits at a bus stop all day, how would they know this? Netflix didn’t care about Fiona’s identity. Otherwise she would of been a thin 3O Year old woman, said she was welsh and changed the postings. Why do we need to know the truth? It feels fascinating but icky.😱

You mentioned that Fiona didn't allude to having or wanting a relationship with Richard Gadd, but would have if she suffered from the illness associated with some stalkers. However, don't some stalkers move on from one person to another? Additionally, if a person has a personality disorder( I don't mean Fiona, as I think it would be unfair on her to assume or guess that she has a disorder, I'm talking generally about some stalkers) don't they often have a very black or white view of people, so either they are 'for' you or 'against' you? Meaning a stalker could switch from feeling they had a romantic relationship with someone, to intensity disliking that person over some action or perceived slight.

Dr Das you should fo a breakdown on Gadd. He's admitted he had drug and alcohol plus mental health issues. n His perceptions were probably pretty screwed up too.

@@martalisabrondin9390 I didn’t say she was charming. I’m suggesting that sociopaths etc can deceive, and can appear charming, or pleasant, or even charismatic. Ones I have known are charismatic, that’s commonplace. In other words, we can’t read anything into her behaviour during and interview, unless there’s something blatant.
