Two great ambassadors for the sport. Joe was simply awesome throughout his career and Richie put up a good performance. Richie is a pleasure to listen to now he’s a pundit and he really knows what he’s talking about .
One of the all time best of British fights. A real man’s war, between two fine gentlemen of the sport. Richie Woodhall was an exceptionally good fighter, one of my favourites. But Joe was a cut in class above and made Richie look almost ordinary. He gave a really good challenge and stood up well to the beating, like a true warrior. The commentator said that Richie had an operation on his elbow that hampered him a bit. If it wasn’t for that it would’ve gone to points most likely. Thanks.
The description says "a prime Joe Calzaghe" but I wouldn't say this was Joe at his prime. If anything this fight shows how much better Joe got as his career went on after this. His head movement, footwork and confidence in his hand speed all improved massively. Watching this at the time I don't think anyone would have predicted the performances Joe would put on after.
Never knew these two fought as I was too young to remember Calzaghe's early fights but seen his wins against a slightly worn Rj jnr and B Hop they were great fights to watch which inspired me to fight all the guys at school who were 2yrs older than me and only drew one fight and won 5
...to fight all the guys at school ... 🤣 I won a few amateur titles in Chicago as a youth and even though I was a lighter weight for my age EVERYBODY in my school, including college, wanted a piece of me. high school quarterbacks, college offensive lineman that weighed 100 pounds more than me. You know, I have never in my life started a fight with anyone? Your post made me smile though. Ahh, what men do for fun in their youth.
This was the battle of the sons and dad's ,,lol..both fighters trained by there dad's but they was both good friends and respect was given to both parties which was proper
Woodhall looks like he outweighs Joe by 15 pounds for some reason. Tough kid. Joe was much more of a highly skilled technician than appearances give him credit for.
ref stopped it just before towel was thrown in, Woodhall was fucked and his corner knew it, they was up on the apron with towel in hand ..ref stopped him getting proper hurt and battered and knocked out or worse.
Joe was kind to Woodhall and didn't embarrass him early on in the fight.. Woodhall never was very good, yes he became champion and looks good on paper, but god knows how.. Calzaghe used this fight as a sort of warm up. when he decided to turn it on Woodhall didn't have a clue and his weakness showed big time. Plus of course Woodhall never did have a good bang to his arsenal.. he would of been ideal for Froch who would of not messed about and simply knocked Woodhall out inside 3 rounds or in the first if he wanted an early night.. Like i say when Calzaghe decided to finish it there was only one outcome if the ref didn't save him. and now he does commentating and is shit at that too. talks total crap and says oh they should do this or that and yet never done it himself.. He was lucky to win the title when this weight was very limited until Calzaghe arrived. i think Woodhall is very lucky it was not robin ried or would of got hit by some very hard punches and collapsed early in the fight. Calzaghe did not have a big bang ,but had great speed, a ton of stamina and a very good chin.
loving all theses Calzaghe fights

Richie did fantastic in this, he should be proud. Father Son v Father Son, cool.
A proper boxing match great a effort by Richy Woodhal gained my respect after this one. Calzaghe pressure and work rate was second to none.

Great fight. Richie just gassed out in the last few rounds. Joe was in his face constantly and wore him down. Some great shots by Richie though.
Great fight. But what the hell was that stoppage? For a guy who fought that hard it was all over very quickly.

Answer to the commentator at 17.08 in hindsight
Beat the 💩 out of them
