Sometimes your lack of motivation might might be a sign that change is needed.
"Discipline > Motivation" is a sentiment often circulated in the fitness world (probably other places too).
While I strongly agree that discipline is important, I don't think we need to choose between the two. We can have both.
After all, sheer commitment and willpower sometimes can be bad, right? For example, if you're dedicated to a harmful fitness routine and never quit, then you're just dedicated to poor results.
It should be noted that good things often take time, so don't be so quick to change if you haven't given something a chance!
Personally, I'd say use discipline to get start and keep going. It's the fuel that powers your vehicle. At the same time, use motivation to correct and optimize. It's your steering wheel.
    Have a beautiful day!

@@skeptical_playz6142The way he explained it in the video - try things out that you're motivated to do, even if it is just to rule them out. So use discipline to start working out (at all); and use motivation as a strong wheel: Let it tell you what suits you, is good for you, and you enjoy. 😊
      Hope that helped you understand.

one trick i use to differentiate
if you're not motivated coz something is difficult, and you're just starting out, and you need to get past that mental barrier of self conscience, use discipline to get through the difficult phases
if you're not motivated coz what you're trying to do just isn't working for you anymore, or you're burnt out(from a job), or it doesn't fulfill the needs of what you're looking for, maybe its time to try something new

    • @CottidaeSEA
      @CottidaeSEA Год назад +35

I do the same thing. When things are difficult, I usually do it until I get tired of it, then come back at a later time when I've processed the information. It usually becomes far easier. Works far better than just bashing my head against something, hoping it'll give in eventually. Our brains need time to process things, just as our bodies need time to recover after exercise.

Actually people get the idea of motivation completely wrong. You have to do inner work and figure things our in yourself and ask yourself "what do I want?" or if it is something unpleasant or hard ask yourself "what are my alternatives? What will the results will be if I do it? What are the consequences of not doing it?". It's all about hearing yourself, asking yourself what you think and feel, being compassionate towards yourself. Discipline is needed when breaking this initial fear or doubt or complete something when it gets harder, but it is not the substitute for being a good caregiver for yourself. Be willing to talk to yourself and accept that you have needs and wants which are not necessarily what you find "right" or easy to deal with. Also there are so many other factors which can lead to no motivation, for example social isolation, bad sleep, lack of nutrition, fears, beliefs

Spot on. After three years of going to a gym, I rapidly started losing motivation. I had achieved my fitness goals, and things were getting boring. After I realized I had nothing to prove to anyone, never wanted to be the strongest guy there, it became less and less important to me to keep going. So now I'm strictly maintaining what I have, and by doing what I love: hiking. Yes, I still lift in a gym, but maintenance instead of growth relieves a lot of the pressure and makes the ride more enjoyable

Honestly for me, going "you know what? I don't feel like working out today. Instead of doing a full 15-30 mins, maybe I'll just do 5. I can do 5, right?" And if I do 5mins, I'll sometimes do another 5 mins later. And before bed I'll say "maybe I can do 20more reps." Sometimes I don't. But I now more often do exercises. Because I tell myself 5mins is better than nothing. And that REALLY freed me from feeling like I HAVE to be up to 30mins of resistance training when I've already walked a lot at my job and am just tired some weeks. I wouldn't have considered that a good thing until I found your channel. Thanks for inspiring me to break it down into whatever is manageable and building from there 💛

Discipline is dependable, but also draining. Whereas motivation is energizing, but it comes and goes. A severe lack of motivation tends to happen for a good reason, a signal that your situation isn't working for you. Trying to just push through that with sheer willpower will inevitably leave you burnt out.

You can't work out and go to failure without SOME moderate/high degree of motivation. People who say they only need discipline have no clue what having no motivation is like. Their worst day is someone else's best day. Discipline is sufficient for endurance based activities like running, but for strenght you ABSOLUTELY need motivation for those last reps which are the only reps that matter. Without motivation your brain is simply not able to go into that die/kill mindset that you need to activate ALL your muscle fibers and to their full extent. I have tested this out on myslf many times. Again, people who say they dont need motivation have NO CLUE what having no/low motivation is actually like. Their motivation baseline is higher by default and their worst day is someone else's best day.

I do, however, love dance classes (which is why I've been doing it for 25yrs and now teach it). So I can go to a dance conditioning class and get just as good a workout, but because I know it's going to be enjoyable I actually *want* to go, and it turns into something I *get* to do, rather than something I feel like I have to do.

You can use it in short bursts, but if you're relying on it constantly, you'll inevitably run out.
I think motivation is something you gain from an encouraging and friction-free environment, and when you have it, you don't need as much discipline. Therefore, a good use of discipline is changing your environment to be more motivating or removing anything that's working against you.

For me I realized motivation or discipline, I just needed routine because I kept forgetting I should be going to the gym. I never went for motivation, or due to having discipline, I just wanted to go to the gym because I wanted smth to do 🤔🤔

I think people mistake desires, motivation and determination...
You can cycle between all of these emotions all your life. But without true willingness, you'll never go past the starting point.
    Motivation will wore out
    Desires are sporadic
Determination is simply a mindset that will definitely not carry you until the very end
But willingness. True willingess is above all else . It's driven by desires, it can drive motivation, and determination will cement everything to make you do it right.
Discipline will come by itself if you really want what you want. No need to chase it

I love this idea so much because I've always lamented the fact that I hate the gym setting but if there was like an indoor Athletics trampoline parkour thing like they have in California or Colorado I would be all over it. So I instead tried to build my own little obstacle course in my yard. Pick up the neighbours attention and there was a bunch of kids just outside watching me doing absolutely the weirdest dumbest things like what a child would do but being able to ignore them and still act as if I'm not being watched wasn't a girl to the confidence in my jumps. It's great for the summer but I definitely need to internalize and learn how to make those activities phone at home because while I am disciplined enough to do activities if they are boring I simply can't and that is truly the motivation that you speak of I've just never heard it put into better or more eloquent terms like you have

It takes discipline to start something new. The motivation comes when you invest yourself.
I always remember that when I start a new project. After a while it won’t be hard to get myself to work on it.

I've realized that I'm highly motivated with low discipline. I start new things and go balls to the wall with them for anywhere from a week, to a few months. It's fine in the short term but it doesn't work in the long term. It also makes it harder to work on discipline, because motivation can stand in for a lack of discipline in the short term. I'm working on it though, you can do it too!

So, it's not so much a lack of motivation, but rather FOLLOWING your motivation. Your motivation lead you to exercising at home.
    Interesting. I like this.
