By 2012, the BBC had accumulated quite a lot of Daleks, plus they borrowed a lot, so that a large number could all appear on screen together in Ayslum of the Daleks. In this investigation we break down every scene to understand all the props seen used on set and confirm exactly how many were held by the production team at the time.
It’s oddly reassuring to know that original daleks from 2005/6 were still present in later stories. They kind of feel like cast members at this point
yeah, kinda like how the old series had the same cast of dalek props all the way through lol
It shows how well they took care of them in storage, to the point they look quite well, even been the very first props build for the show.
"Should we measure up the placement of the dalek eggs properly so theyre all even?"
"Nah the dalek detectives will love that shit"
I loved how the chrome red paradigm drones looked, I wish we’d seen them more after this episode
Omg I love your videos! You're a Doctor Who fan??
@@pocket-dimensionguilty
Always makes my day when I see a new Dalek Detectives episode has dropped. Great video as always!
God I love the Doctor Who Fanbase. The ability to accurately track the detailed history of props seen for only about 45 seconds throughout a single episode is amazing
I love this level of nerdistry so much
Thank you!
We try to strike a balance between the general story of the props and TOO much information. If you check out our website you will see that we cover the numbers on each page. Dalek6388.co.uk
@@Dalek6388 nono, the more detail the better haha XD and i meant the dalek numbers in the credits of the tv episodes, along with the rest of the cast and crew =)
And we come to the finale of the Asylum trilogy. It's nice to hear about the history of each of the props, even if the newly built Paradigms had a very short career.
Your Jack the Ripper video was inspired - just the type of top quality work I've come to expect from the Dalek Detectives.
I liked you Jack the Ripper video and hope to see other offbeat subjects and educational history shorts connected to Doctor Who production history. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! I enjoyed it too and I also hope Gav has these tangents every so often!
Nice work Dalek Detectives.
I am rather surprised at how many real Daleks are present. I would have used way more CGI if it was me. But it's cool they had real props!
Can the dodgy hemi at 6:07 be considered the modern equivalent of dalek-2's 'iconic' neck block? They're both quick fixes that stuck out visually and stuck around a tad too long!
Another great Dissection of the Daleks! It really is a pleasure watching these videos, you all do a great job of getting this information across in an enjoyable way without losing any of the actual educational value, which is a tricky line to balance.
I've always heard that the Paradigm props had their hunches redesigned for Asylum, but they've always looked identical to me, so it was revelatory to me when you actually showed what the difference is! So thank you!
Thank you!
Amazing work, you Dalek Detectors have done it again! This is amazing, I love that through keen Dalek prop obsession you have all uncovered continuity placement errors in a story that most people working on the production would have figured 'Dark room full of Daleks, no one will notice.' Excellent stuff, also I know it was a gag but I happen to like the offshoot topics like the Jack the Ripper video. Can't wait to see the next vid, whatever the topic is!
I love niche video essays so much and this has to be my favourite I've seen so far. It was so interesting seeing the history of these props and, for some reason, I got quite emotional when Rusty was mentioned. You are a good Dalek detective!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Another amazing episode as always! It was fun and informative. Great work Dalek Detectives!
Glad you enjoyed it!
In the late 60’s my school class was taken on a tour of BBC Scotland. There in storage was a lone Dalek. It had travelled by British Rail to Scotland as it had tickets still stuck on the dome. My abiding memory is the two lights on the dome were early mini glass front indicator lights 🤣
Another fantastic video, thank you. Also, I adored your Jack the Ripper video, I’m hoping you make more videos like that outside of Dalek related shenanigans.
The Crazy Thumbnail Change of The Dalek Detectives' Video
Pleasantly surprised by the amount of jokes in this one, had a good laugh haha
Great video. The white distressed original new series supreme appears to have a new head - no eyes or lights and not even proper light holes. The original last seen in wedding of river song is missing
I say this in every video thread, this channel and its content are great! The attention to details borders on superhuman.
This was an awesome video. I've adored the three episodes and have actually been making character options customs of many of the daleks from this story thanks to your awesome material. I did however feel a little short changed by the time spent on NSDAD1 and 2 just because i find them so interesting and thought you might have mentioned their future career in the experience or time fracture. But lovely video!! Adored it.
We do try to balance how much info we give. Sometimes too much info can true people off too. We do cover all their history on the main website though
Thank you Dalek Detectives 63-88
Love the injection of humor! And the extermination of Jimmy Carr. You said that perhaps there was some shoddy workmanship on some of them, but is it possible that this was either 1) to help the BBC keep track of them or 2) they watch your show and wanted to give you some markers?
We’d love it if they did think of us in this way!
They do actually mark them inside to try and keep track of the sections to keep them together.
I would be interested in seeing the history of the Dalek Mutant prop. See, I know it debuted in 2005's Dalek, was reused for the emperor (skipped over Sec, cos he had to be CGI to eat Mr Diagoras whole) and was then used again for Caan, the Prime Minister and Rusty. From what I gathered, was 9 years of appearances before they stopped using it and eventually made a new one for the Resolution dalek which was used throughout the Chibnal era.
The one we see in Caan isn’t the same as the Emperor and Metaltron. That was destroyed irreparably as the water from the Emperor’s tank ruined the animatronics in the mutant prop. I believe Caan and the Prime Minister are the same, but I’m not sure of Rusty
@@unimpressedlink2507 They did a SPOT ON job if that's the case. They replicated it so well, I couldn't tell the difference.
Would you ever do a video on the Daleks physical body prop?
This is incredibly clear. The onscreen graphics, outlines and the diagram of the room are really helpful. It's also very funny in places.
Glad you enjoyed it!
How did you slow that shot down at 7:00 like that? Looks amazing!
Excellent video as always, Detectives 👌
I think Gav uses Adobe so I would imagine that it somehow creates new frames
@@Dalek6388 It does. It's called Optical Flow, which, if used correctly, does indeed add new frames. If used poorly, it will pixelate and tear the image. So, it can only be used at certain times.
Brilliant, well done, always love when a new video gets released.
I’m loving the Dalek Detectives moniker. Maybe to appease dissenters, you can be Dalek Detectives 63.88?
Excellent and work as usual guys! I quite like the name Dalek Detectives!
They have all these dalek props and yet most of the time we only see the copper daleks and maybe one or two special daleks. It would be nice to see more variety and differences between them.
Such Dalek goodness! Thank you!
"Babe come over"

😂
New to these videos but wow! Love the tracking of the Daleks. You give Poirot a run for his money!!!!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the others!
I can't remember seeing this so glad I caught it...
Very detailed breakdown!
Can I ask a geeky favour, on this channel (I'd post the link but that seems to get comments deleted) there's a video about me and my family going to the studios in Cardiff (competition prize) just days after they finished filming Power of the Doctor and met a dalek in the office in the studio. Based on it being there I'd assume it's a screen used one, I don't know how great my pictures are but if you can figure out if it is and which one it is (when it's appeared etc) and could let me know that would be great! Thanks in advance if you do take on this challenge!
Hello! Thank you for showing us the video. And congratulations on winning the competition! The Dalek you met is the one we call NSDPOTD2. It was built especially for Power of the Doctor so doesn't get a huge amount of screen time but it did appear at the Premiere and photographed with the stars of that story!
@@Dalek6388 Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it in future stories then!
I love how many puns / references to other Dalek shows you manage to sneak in (I’m specifically thinking of the “destiny” comment 🤣)
Chaps! Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!!!!!
Keep up the good work…I’m building my own (60s) Dalek next year…oh what fun!!!!
The history of these props is fascinating.
I never knew until reading on your website a couple of years ago that the Dalek from the episode 'Dalek' was the same prop as Dalek Sec.
Now we have the Dalek Detectives I wonder if we'll have some "Cyber Certifiers" in future?
...alright, Dalek Detectives works far better. >.
AGH! I should've said *CYBER SLEUTHS!*
My wife, not a Dalek fan would like me to tell you that you have a lovely narrating voice.
Mmmmm sexy Dalek voice….
You have just made me like rusty. To think that his history no go as thus: First surviving the three doctors during the last day of the time war, only to go insane from the encounter (understandable) and end up on the darlek asylem. Next he tried to kill Rory and finally (after escaping the asylem) end up being captured by humans only to be "saved" by a fourth incarnation of the doctor who has now become his god. What a tale.
I always enjoy your thoroughly researched videos. I’m enjoying them even more with the added humour element! Very informative and funny. Well done!
Is the fact that "Dalek Detectives" can be abbreviated to double-D a coincidence? In THIS video???
😂
😂
It's so crazy how you're obsessed with, and I'm fascinated by as I watch this video, something that absolutely doesn't matter whatsoever. It's actually mental how insignificant it is how many Daleks the BBC own and which shots each one is used in, yet you go to extreme lengths to learn this information. I don't even mean that in a bad way, because we all have obsessive quests for knowledge like how you have for Dalek props, a common example being sports statistics Although this channel is about aliens, I think it says a great deal about the human condition.
It's a real shame the Daleks no longer sport the oil/weathered look (apart from MT1) like they did in the early seasons. Especially so in the Stolen Earth / Journeys End, the bronze Daleks in that looked great, with all the weathering applied it really did bring them to life, And ever since the repaint for Victory of the Daleks, as well as all of the other casings that have been procured, this weathered look is missing and just makes them look toy like.
would love a video on destiny of the daleks and its very rough props
Always exciting to see a new Dalek Detectives ep
Some of those 8 new daleks also shared something like their counterparts in Death to the daleks, an oddly dropped dome leaving a small gap on the top neck section, almost touching the neck ring
I like that look, seems like it means business...
Dalek Detectives you've done it again! No Dalek is match for them!
Another fantastic Dalek Detectives episode!
I really liked the Ripper video too, it’s good to think outside the Dalek.
Amazing work
Thank you!
Brilliant video! Nice work, this was a fascinating watch
Thank you!
It always amazes me that considering Daleks are made from moulds, just how many differences they have.
Wonderful stuff lads. Almost arousing. But not quite.
What would it take for full arousal to occur?
Is that a Dalek plunger in your pocket, etc?
@@brassbandit 🪠
My what a big weapon
I’m strangely reassured that we now have cheesy Daleks in the mix. It makes the world a nicer place. 🤪
Why did I not get a notification for that? I have the bell enabled. Bad RUclips
Another great episode! Thanks!
A trinity of holy Daleks?
I say that we name them the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spiridon.
fantastic upload as always matey 👍depth of detail is insane as per 😁
Another fascinating deep dive into Skaro's finest!
Hello everyone, I hope you all appreciate it has taken a lot of courage to come here today and finally speak out. But as they say the first step is admitting there is a problem.
So, my name is Nigel... and I am... A Geek! 😉👍🇬🇧
(I love these deep-dives, though I do have to use Bargain Hunt as a sort of decompression chamber afterwards).
😂
Ah, MT1 ❤They’ve hidden it away from the window in Birmingham recently so I no longer get to visit it.
Hey, army called. Don’t reveal our secret military equipment.
The sass is off the scale!
Fascinating video ❤
I bloody loved the Jack the Ripper video!
1:25 TO THE WORLD OF THE MIGHTY BOOSH!
I thought the same.
Dalek Detectives is awesome
Fantastic work yet again by my long time favourites The Dalek Detectives.
For real though I would support the name change, would be a lot easier to rememeber when I want to look up your videos rather than relying on the sub feed
Have you guys heard of the VHS from 1993 of the history of the daleks called Dalekmania - the history of the daleks on the big screen, might help with older research
You know where you are with DD... Double Diamond... er, Dalek Detectives!
This is the first video of yours I've had suggested.
The content and the comedy has immediately earned my subscription.
I am fully in favour of the rename to The Dalek Detectives, though.
Thank you for the sub!
I'm starting to think that these 'mistakes' are deliberate to help the dalek detectives out.
We wish!
Excellent work, Dalek Detectives! I'm inspired to go back and watch the highlights of the NuWho era.
Brilliant guys, thanks
Love the new name!
So the third-built bronze dalek and 4/5 2010 paradigm daleks were not featured in this story. I wonder why?
The third bronze Dalek disappeared after being on display in Blackpool and hasn’t been on TV since. Of the paradigms, two were turned to stone for the end of series 5 so couldn’t really be used. The yellow one remained on display in The Experience. The red one stayed in storage but not sure why it wasn’t used as it was seen for the rehearsals
Whew....Dalek detectives alright.
Maybe when I grow up I can be a Dalek Detective
Babe wake up dalek 63•88 posted
This is very nit-picky, but Doctor Who Confidential was “Doctor Who Extra” by the Capaldi era.
Yeah, yeah nerd! 😂
Ayyy I’ve been waiting for this to drop! I’m afraid classic Daleks don’t take my interest
The Holey Trinity
I don't suppose there's any interest in looking into the Daleks in the escape rooms, having come face to face with the London version of A Dalek Awakens, and possibly Time Fracture though that's obviously not around anymore and probably not very well documented or broadcast due to spoilers?
As far as I’m aware all the ones in the escape rooms are This Planet Earth replicas. The ones in Time Fracture were screen used and we have them covered on our main website but not in video form as yet
Marvellously silly detective work !
I love how the only thing I knew about all this was there was daleks in the episode that was mental well done for doing this pretty cool to see all the little details about each prop
I'm sorry, what? A Dalek exterminated Jimmy Carr? Why wasn't it presented with an OBE and the freedom of Gallifrey (that's in Ireland)?
nice mighty boosh reference 😏
The BBC: like anyone's gonna be able to tell these apart
This guy: You fools... You've played right into my trap
Do a history of the Dalek character options franchise please
AsylumOTD would’ve been vastly better if, instead of an asylum, it was set in a warfare experimentation compound akin to Unit 731.
You *could* change your name to the Dalek Detectives, but you know in your heart that we, being the awful rabble that we are, would call you The Double-D's. Do you want that? Do you?
😂
I like the title "The Dalek Detectives" 😁
Detection of the Daleks
The Dalek Detectives work at its finest, 'cough!' sorry... Dalek 63*88
😂
Does the BBC own any of the paradigm daleks anymore?
they use to have a blue one in television center at christmas time
They do have some of them left but some went to auction last year in aid of charity
But which detectives are you, Holmes, Marple, Monk, Colombo, Clouseau or Gadget?
