The BBC shipped in a selection of fan-owned Daleks to appear in the Asylum. But their presence on set caused a few problems for the continuity-conscious. And one met a very sorry end. Развлечения
The sad story of that original mould duplicate dalek feels a modern day equivalent of that original shawcraft base getting blown up and smashed to bits for Day of the Daleks.
How do I keep finding you everywhere
@@TheSparrrow I'm the worlds worst where's wally
Or how they gave away the props made for the first Cushin movie and let the props for the second movie rot after production ended.
I agree but I'm glad it's first explosion wasn't it's last.
I thought this was an FX skirt, I just looked at the Dalek6388 Day page and couldn’t see anything about it
The interesting thing about a "Time War" is you could well ens up with multiple versions of the same individual, and / or individuals from timelines that no longer exist. I like the idea that's what broke these Daleks - they are remnants of a lost timeline.
eggs eggs eggs eggs eggs
Fascinating idea!
I'm partial to the idea that the Time Lords went "screw causality" and ordered everyone to ignore the laws. Problem: You have two sides undoing each other so much they can't tell what's what anymore.
Ironically, The Skaro Degradations, mentioned in The End of Time, were described in the Engines of War novel as messed up variation daleks created as a result of the Time Lords trying to stop the creation of the Daleks in the first place during the Time War and consequently making new timelines, so like everything you just said literally all tracks in canon.
My theory as a kid was that the Ironside was reconstructed atom by atom by the parliament to interrogate to see if they could find out any secret events that happened between Journey's End and Victory, with both the reconstruction and subsequent torture making it go insane, thus being comitted to the asylum. Bear in mind that i was 7 when i thought it up so it may not hold up 100 percent canonically lol.
I was more concerned with why the Daleks owned a model TARDIS for target practice.
@@farmbrough exactly and why it had wires Into it lol
Far more genuinely logical and cool than a fan theory from a seven year old has a right to be
That’s a cool theory, very fucked up but it is Daleks we’re talking about so that make it even more feasible 😂👌
@@cyberleaderandy1so the daleks could use their manipulator arm to switch the LED on inside of it. Duh
an explanation for the other dalek sec could be there were multiple "Cults of Skaro". Their purpose was to come up with new strategies to win the time war so it would make sense to have multiple teams coming up with new strategies in case one failed, we can argue the ones seen in army of ghosts was the most effective team and the less effective teams ended up in the asylum.
Coud be a Sec from another "time" thrown there by the time wars "timey wimeyness"
@@cyberleaderandy1 A Dalek Sec thrown from an Abandoned Timeline, who was imprisoned in the Asylum for his "Delusions" that he was Dalek Sec, and that he had escaped the Time War. Clearly an insane solider. Nothing to be done.
Interesting concept, that works well, I literally just posted my own theory on this before seeing your comment 😂👌
There were more members in the Cult, and those four we saw were just the ones in the void ship.
@@nicholastosoni707 Really? That’s interesting I’ve never heard that before, where did you get this from?
The continuity "errors" can be explained as the Daleks traveling through time and taking the individuals from points in time to preserve them in a way. A museum of the worst daleks basically.
Well till they had to blow it up.
I assume something could be similar in the Rebuilt Skaro.
This was roughly my idea, the Daleks collected their worst through history to help preserve the timeline and also to help study them
I think the ironside are my favourite dalek the fact they have utility pouches but no hands entertains me
You know, although it's a shame that the first generation black Dalek was cut up, the fact it now has such a legacy, destroying Daleks in Asylum, appearing in the 50th and exploding on Stage for celebrations and it looks awesome everytime it explodes or has flames go through, it almost makes it worth it. Through literally being part steel and through it's usage, it's the most metal Dalek in my opinion.
My theory on the Ironside is that there was a third one before the Doctor arrived who got a little too into his disguise and the other two declared him insane and shifted him to the asylum
Absolutely adore this channel and the incredible videos it produces. Thanks to everyone involved!
Our pleasure!
That was such a beautiful Dalek, it was a shame that an original mould version was destroyed, but it did feature in the VFX shots that I did enjoy in DOTD.
BBC: mind if borrow these? we only need them for a day or two!
NSD Owners: ye sure
BBC: *doesn’t return them after a day or two*
*yeah we just set your NSDs on fire and blew some of them up, here are the remains of them*
Yep. Sounds like the BBC. A friend of mines house was hired for BBC filming once. Never again. The damage they caused cost far more than what they paid. They trashed an area near me once for filming and never bothered cleaning up. They even “accidentally” burnt down part of a friend of mines property. Absolute menaces!
How Scott let his Dalek prop go for use in the pyrotechnic scene reminds how they kinda did the same to Red Dalek in the Daleks' Invasion Earth re-painted him to portray the Black Dalek in the fight scene at the end of the movie.
My headcanon with Sec in the Asylum was that it was just his shell. Some clean-up squad went and got it between scenes. Maybe another mutant got it.
New case available, perfect for xenocidial genius. 2 up 2 down in prime location. Ensuite included. Non smoker preferred
NO THALS
I just take it as a representative of a “Spec Ops Leader” Dalek, maybe the rank Sec was from
Even the Nazi Robots believe in "reduce reuse recycle".
Makes sense, considering the doctor never mentions getting rid of it himself. Would be a bad idea to leave a fully intact Dalek shell in 1930s America
One thing you didn't mention was the Ironside Dalek's shortened middle slat. Normally it wouldn't be noticeable because of the Army Equipment, but since it had been removed for Asylum, you could see it had a short middle slat.
Maybe it was just cold inside the Asylum.
Thankfully I am already subscribed! I hope I get a new Dalek Model for my collection!
“Maybe it was just cold inside the asylum” 😂👌
Brilliant stuff, love this channel. The amount of work that must have gone into researching, scripting and editing this... very impressive indeed. Looking forward to the next episode!
Mr Rymill is "Mr Dalek"! And kudos for using the word 'criterion' correctly :)
Such a shame about that clone/replica. It even had the extra ridge around the eye lens that was never seen again after Dalek.
While I love the thought of a time traveling Dalek Caan collecting Daleks from different eras or even timelines, I think it's likely a lot simpler. Whether you were exterminated or failed, the dead are useless. So why not recycle the old IDs for new casings? It just feels like a pretty Dalek solution to me.
I initially felt pretty bad for the "Jigsaw Dalek" but then it went full circle to become awesome as no explosion could stop it.
The sheer numbers of Daleks produced and destroyed over countless generations and centuries must mean they have to reuse id tags eventually
The fender/ground clearance on the charity builds might be because some have blue lighting underneath to suggest levitation, or at least gliding.
Your work on the Daleks and Doctor Who is of the most impeccable quality. I never miss a single video from this channel.
the fact that in many ways it was *the* original dalek that got blown up is sad... IDK I think its honestly pretty charming at the same time that its managed to get such a screen and stage carreer, and its inherent reusability (although doubtless on the way out now,) is honestly pretty cool.
0:05 "Something doesn't add up"
Statler and Waldorf: Yeah! The plot! Phnar, phnar, phnar.
So glad for nerds like you. You have my absolute respect. And that research you did was thoroughly worth it
I love this channel, thanks to all the team for their hard work.
There's an easy way to explain "sec" being in the asylum. Apparently the cult of skaro was formed from exceptional dalek commanders of 4 different squadrons active in the time war, so it's feasible to assume that the black dalek in the asylum isn't actualy sec but another dalek commander of a specific squadron.
My theory for the Dalek Sec thing is that the events of the fan animation "dalek tales" is cannon. So, during a conflict with the Cybermen, the history of the Dalek's was altered by a Cyber experiment, resurrecting Skaro and pulling Daleks from various timelines together in the same place. So following the Sewers coming alive and nearly destroying the city, Sec was driven mad by the liquid daleks (or something) and later dumped in the asylum when the Dalek Emperor we see in the official animated series reclaimed Skaro.
I watch these videos when customizing my own Daleks, so this is very good stuff to listen to and watch carefully so I can take in all the tidbits of info and not miss anything. Keep up the great stuff.
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure I've actually seen this Dalek before, at the Newcastle Exhibition in 2010. They were bloody terrifying at the time!
TIL Daleks have ID badges.
As for the cult, in some ways it would make sense to have an ‘insane’ Dalek in a ‘maverick’ group and in a series involving time travel, you can just lampshade it with ‘timey wimey’.
in universe, I'd say the "Ironside" its an old copper Dalek covered in green oxide.
Great video. But oh boy, destroying that pristine fist gen Dalek for FX shots certainly shows commitment. Not sure id be that devoted to a company to surrender such a valuable item. 🤔
As much as I love to dislike the Steven Moffat Dalek trilogy ("The Asylum Of The Daleks", "Into The Dalek" and "The Magician's Apprentice"/"The Witch's Familiar"), it's nice to finally see you talking about modern day Daleks.
I think we will do some more of that too. Although maybe not as often as the classic ones
I'd love it if the Cult of Skaro somehow came back through a crack in time from an alternate dimension and tried to find yet another insane strategy for survival, those daleks were the most relevant daleks in the entire new series
Not only was this really interesting but hilarious too, I blurted out an unexpected laugh a number of times! And yay Southport exhibition 2006, I was there when I was a Liv Uni Student
Thank you!
13:45 in "dinosaurs on a spaceship" its shown rory has an edc nursing supply kit, it would make sense he carries a torch with that for pupil dilation tests
Very good point, it is the very next episode
So glad Spaceport got a mention! I'm also from the Wirral and went to the exhibition both times it was there. The first half of the video I was thinking, I wonder if any of these daleks are the ones I will have seen as a kid. Thank you for these videos!
God! I don't know why I find your channel so addictive! This shouldn't be this interesting! It's mad! One question... Do they say in Victory Of The Daleks that there are only two Ironsides?
I think two are only ever shown
Watched this show as a kid and the Daleks were always my favourite, it's interesting to know all the details that went into this episode and the stories of all the props! Sad to see what happened to the last Dalek, but it does make me smile to know there are Daleks out there called 'Goldie' and 'Churchil'
Absolutely was looking forward to seeing this part! thank you to everyone involved with this channel!
❤
One thing, the casing for Sec.. I wonder where it went in Evolution of The Daleks as after Dalek Sec Hybrid climbed out of it, it was sat at the back of the room in the lab, up until the 24:12 mark in the episode, but by the 25:12 mark (roughly) it was gone? so a minute precisely later in the episode.. his casing is just gone? so.. guessing that's failed continuity? or something? 🤷♂..
but could that be made into a thing where once a Dalek casing is empty.. it's sent to the Asylum by the Daleks by teleport, hence why Sec's casing is there? (just a throw it together idea haha!)
Our pleasure!
Brilliant video.
I wonder what happened to Dalek Sec's casing in universe? Is it still in the sewers of New York?
Probably might've been recovered by the daleks of skaro and that's why we see a dalek use it in the Magician's Apprentice
Probably might've been recovered by the daleks of skaro and that's why we see a dalek use it in the Magician's Apprentice
So the sixth one was a 'stunt Dalek'. I hope it was suitably compensated...
Absolutely brilliant forensic detective work as usual chaps! Incredible!!!
I went to the Earls Court Exhibition in 2008? (I think) The Dalek display comprised of four black Dalek props on tracks which move backwards and forwards!
To this day, I would love to know where they are now!?!?
Love this channel, would be great to see one on the day of the Daleks special edition
Love the new videos. Always look forward to them
Brilliant stuff! Funny, informative, and absurd levels of intimately researched Dalek-nerdism. Thank you!!
Thank you!
Fantastic and fascinating stuff as always guys, thank you! Keep it up.
My theory of the cult of skaro being there is that since we all know that daleks are genetically altered mutants - it's possible that these ones were clones,
basically the cloned genetics of those daleks went wrong after the experiment was completed and just went defective and insane so there was no choice but to send them into the Asylum
If a Dalek prop is used in a production, is it still an "impostor"?
A great video. Though I can see an 'unemployed Dalek' causing mayhem down the dole office.
Such wit and wry humour... Another cracking episode!
That N.E.R.D Computer looks amazing, What is its processing power?
...and yes I was making notes, made mistakes and nearly had to use my pristine Dr Who eraser bought at Longleat at the 83' Celebration... Admission time, I as a 13 year old at the time, fondled the internal tubes of the exploded Dalek in the special effect tent! "it was wubbery!"
Excellent video and detailed research as per.
There were several Daleks at TVC back in the day, along with a TARDIS prop.
The TARDIS prop was one used on EastEnders and yet was updated to the Matt Smith prop when he was The Doctor.
The Daleks if memory serves were 3-4 in total when I first saw them. I’m sure at one stage there were as many as six. Initially they were in reception, then the public waiting area where the BBC shop and tea bar was and they quickly diminished in number. They disappeared overnight and I was told they used them for filming. In the end there was just one gold battered Dalek in the tea room area left alone and remained for some time. It had damage and looked like it had different body and skirt which didn’t quite match.
Thank you for that info!
Pleasure. I might have some photos of them if I can find them? But they are likely online generally. I can see similar (or the same daleks) at Salford and Brum too.
Gosh I love these videos. The amount of detail is fantastic! This channel is amazing and I have learnt so much from it. Keep up the amazing work! Well...I know you all will keep up the amazing work without me telling you. I guess I'm trying to sound more human. haha
Thank you!
I always love seeing a new upload from you lads! I just got in a lot of the B&M Dalek sets. I nitpick all the mistakes they make with those myself.
I know lots of people have bought multiple sets and customised based on our videos
@@Dalek6388 I am one of those. Although mine are mostly part swapping, and not painting. Would be fun for you to do an April 1st video one year about the figures!
What? [snickering] Are we supposed to believe these are magical Daleks that can move around, change parts and exist even though they were erradicated? Boy, I sure hope someone was fired for that blunder!
Timetravel is a gateway to many abilities, some consider to be unnatural.
@@Melina_Evarblume_Seelie is there a way to learn this power?
Excellent video! Great work.
Amazing research and detail in the video as always, looking forward to the Paradigm props being covered 👀
Thank you!
Ah, the New Paradigm... *SIGH*...
It's a dirty job, @Dalek6388, but someone's gotta do it. [PATS YOUR SHOULDER, THEN RETREATS TO A SAFE DISTANCE.]
=;o]
I love how you can identify the individual Daleks. Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Another excellent and informative episode. I take my hat off to your detective work! By the way, there's more to that continuity error with the dalek with a dome light missing - as the light keeps appearing and disappearing depending on which angle of shot was being used. The shots from behind the dalek towards Rory have the light missing and those from the other direction show the light intact (around 17:40 in the episode). It's not the only continuity error I spotted the first time I watched that episode as, around 5:15, the image is mirrored as you can spot that the dalek arms and guns are reversed. I've always wondered if that was a mistake or a deliberate mirroring.
Good spotting! I would guess the reverse image would be a deliberate directorial choice
Perhaps Daleks went insane and _thought_ they were members of the famous cult of Skaro and that was what got them placed in the asylum.
One thing that's always wound me up, was the inconsistent 60s props in the witch's familiar. There were 3 different colored mid sections and they just don't work. Some have slats, others don't, WHY?! I know casual Who fans don't care though 😂😂
Thank god for the existence of the Neural Extrapolation for Recognising Daleks.
😂
Already subscribed. Always great lore and research.
I actually went to the Earls Court exhibition and I think I have some pictures of the Daleks
Great video.
I still can't work out who the neckless wonder in the background of the first Asylum shot you use.
Oddly I'm from Liverpool, but as it happens I grew up on the Wirral and I was born in Scotland.
As I was adopted I often wonder if I was the son of a piper (and no not Billie Piper...)
Happy Times and Places
Another great video, thanks for all your work.
Thank you!
Wow!! My head is exploding... such fascinating details...love it.👏👏👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
i loved this video, i didnt think i would watch the full 30mins but i found it interesting. I have subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Gonna just go with it not being sec but a black commander who is given the same ID tag to redeem Sec’s code in the eyes of the empire. Redeeming the name. Then he went insane so the Daleks gave another black commander the same code
Then he blew up on skaro
So onto four!
Imagine giving away your unique original mold Dalek and it's for Asylum of all episodes 💔
Love this Series, can't wait for the next video in the series.
Honestly any kind of continuity error with daleks can always be explained with the time war as the time war did happen throughout time with timelines changing like for example when the master tried to end the war and instead he changed the timeline so that the daleks won battles the time lords won before and that put the daleks on an advantage, that’s also the point where he ran away and tuned himself human as he fucked up that badly he thought he just made the daleks win the war.
I love the detail in these videos
I’m loving the humour in these videos lately
Gav is very good at combining his humour with all the details!
Mary Whitehouse used to watch BBC Television with a clipboard and pen in hand ticking off examples of tits, bums, bloodies and violence. So busy was she in finding things she didn't like that she watched television entirely out of context to the story being shown. Is there a danger while spotting and comparing dalek components that you'll begin to miss the actual stories being portrayed and become the 21st Century Mary Whitehouse of dalek identities?
I'm sure Mary Whitehouse would be furious if she'd ever read this and would be writing to the BBC.
We make sure we enjoy the stories before we start to pick them apart! 😆
On the Extermination of the Ironsides, we do often see Daleks using extermination as cover for teleportation, as with Rose in the S1 finale. It'd be a bit of a stretch, but conceivably the Ironsides were teleported to a holding cell, or direct to the asylum, rather than destroyed.
Mind-boggling attention to detail. Funny too. Well done you guys.
Thanks Kevin! ❤️
Another superb Dalek analysis fest thank you!!!
The fact that these aren't symmetrical with themselves let alone each other bothers me immensely.
2:20 I'd love a video essay on the Rory dalek 😂
I love how the BBC put these props in with just the intention of having background Daleks with no lore significance whatsoever. Little did they know how far nerds will go to pick small details. Now we need at least five novels/audio dramas to solve how an ironside and Dalek Sec ended up here.
My theory: It's a canon event.
That’s what Big Finish are for! 😂
@@Dalek6388 Agreed. Although "Tales From the Asylum" doesn't sound like a bad series though.
@@crimsong8068like a series of short stories about how some key Daleks ended up in the Asylum, i.e. which battles or the torture that they faced by their fellow Daleks or even other species (looking at you Time Lords).
“The face was different, but the arrogance in his voice was the same. I was staring at the man who put me in this forsaken place…I was looking at the Doctor!”
@@abrindley123 Precisely what I had in mind! Even on paper, the idea sounds awesome.
Impressive knowledge and explanation. 👏👍
You have enriched "Victory of the Daleks" immeasurably for me with Bracewell's nipple pasties.
Wonderful stuff again! Thanks guys :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Im confused….
But at-least I saw the funny pictures of daleks
so cool how u can tell where the daleks are from from the possitioning
I didn't know only two Ironsides were made, in universe, I assumed there were more we didn't see.
5:44
Was I a Dalek this whole time!?!
😂
Can't wait for the Bernardos episode - the mystery of what happened to those two will forever haunt me. I highly doubt any bits of them remain today sadly.
I’ve heard rumours that one of them is at the bottom of a lake
Bloody love this channel, its amazing
Thank you!
Hell yeah, dalek figures? Nice. I have a collection on my desk at work. Including the Asylum set.
About 18 years ago, I joined the Dalek builders guild online...idk if they still exist, but, they had the blueprints download able to create all the different Daleks, from the beginning to the present. I began building 2 of the earliest 1963 models, but, due to divorce, never got to finish them. I'm sort of glad now I didnt...I think you'd have had a field day if I got one detail wrong...
First things first, click the like button, cos I know I will. Nice one, Gav. 👏👏 Btw, do you have rooms in London as a consulting Dalek detective? Who's your Dr Watson?
my head cannon to avoid confusing continuity is in recognition for the cult of skaros role sec kann jast and thay became titles given to dalek commanders who outperformed in missions.
I hope you know how much I utterly adore these videos. I could watch these forever ❤❤❤❤
Thank you. That’s really appreciated!
Caan could have been to the asylum to lay low, timey wimey.
Between the Time War and Journeys End dalek time.
I got nothing for Sec, would have thought they would at least make new name plates.
Just wondering, if EC 2/1 was comprised of the skirt and dome of number 1 and the midsection of number two, and the second one (EC1/SP?) was the top section of number 1 and the skirt of the space port dalek, was the dome from the second earl's court dalek, as the dome of the first was in use on EC2/1, and therefore shouldn't be with the rest of that dalek's top section. Sorry if that doesn't make sense :)
I will need to go back to our computer to see what happened there and get back to you! 😂
Another fantastic video. I can't understand destroying the original mould! Wouldn't it have been cheaper to destroy a couple of 18inch Daleks like they did in a future episode? (Into the Dalek or Day of the Doctor I think)
Cheaper, but not as convincing, maybe? N.B. you don't just have to have the reduced-scale Daleks to blow up, but also an appropriate background to shoot them against. (Trying to do green-screen backgrounds with things that are exploding and shooting out flames and smoke in the foreground is a non-starter!). So it really depends on the shot you're trying to achieve which technique is going to work out best.
Having a reinforced, pre-fragmented dalek that can be blown up again and again seems like a really clever way of having your cake and eating it, to me. And if you have to shoot the same explosion more than once, for some reason, there's no worry about the fragmentation lines not matching up between the different takes. =:o}
... Maybe they should build a second one now, though, so that us clued-in observers aren't always seeing daleks break up in the same pattern?
@@therealpbristow Good point. Also the 18 inch Daleks didn't move very fast, surely to achieve the out of control Dalek, they'd have to have sped the film up to.
Thank you for this fantastic insight
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a dedication!
Thank you!
I’ve got a couple of low resolution photos of Daleks that were on display in Newcastle in mid-2010. I’m sure they’re probably not needed, but I’m happy to share them to help any tracking of Daleks in the future?
Yes please! You may have a shot of one of the Daleks I’ve not been able to identify yet as it’s so dark!
