Thank you, Jeff, for your work! We installed our first nailed-down hardwood floor based on your video, and now I am watching your videos to build a closet. The best instruction on youtube. Our house is by Berks in Central Pennsylvania, built in 2011. All walls have studs 24" on center, inside and outside. Builders made a lot of mistakes, or maybe just cut corners. The worst was that the grounding wire wasn't connected to the ground, so we'd lived in the house for 5-6 years before we discovered this.

Hey Jeff, awesome build, thanks for the tips.
One I have for you is that masking tape on the top side of the melamine and a new or very sharp blade both help reduce tear out substantially (doesn't completely stop it, but it makes a huge difference)

  • @user-kl1vs9mq8j
    @user-kl1vs9mq8j 5 месяцев назад +1

I usually use masking tape on my cut lines on coated boards to prevent chipping.
French cleats are great. But I usually don't recess them. I put another board at the bottom of the cabinet to space it properly off the wall. I will have to practice the recess system...

Thank you again for your videos.

I would adjust that top height bar so my shirts don't sit on the lower shelf when hanging there (as seen in the final few seconds of video) they tend to get a little dirty/linty on the bottom even if you keep the doors shut. I installed a rubbermaid variant of what you've done many years ago and installed it to have the largest typical gaps between the bottom of the top row of shirts & shelf, and the shirts on the lower bar & floor, so I could use the under-shirt space for storage of folded sweaters under the upper shirts and boots+shoes on the floor. That meant a very narrow space between the topmost wire-shelf and the ceiling, but I used that space to stuff a couple strands of white xmas lights plugged into the old pullchain lamp-socket. That was enough light to really illuminate the filled closet way better than a single bulb would do, and looked pretty great. That lighting choice was because, my own place, not a rental property, where issues might occur.

Our "modular" house is about 21yrs old. Skyline homes built it. Not sure what state they're out of but we live in IL. Exterior walls are 2x6 16" centers. Interior walls are 2x3 24in centers, except some load bearing walls that are 2x4 16in centers. Of course the walls where the half's join are 2x3 so they make up a 2x6.

You're not wrong about the screws here having a bad initial bite. Between that, and the screw's shallow bit depth I ended up driving the drill bit into my finger, and getting a spectacular blood blister, lol. I thought I was just an idiot whom didn't know how to use a screwgun, but apparently it's not just me!
Today is a DIY day for me because my wife is out of town, and I'm taking the opportunity to fix a hallway gang box situation where there was a 2-gang for 2 light switches, and a 1-gang with a single light switch about 2 inches to the right. I've managed to get the new gang box in, which is a hybrid called a "smart box" made by Southwire. It bridges the gap between a new work box, and an old work one by having angled screws in it that allows you to drive them right into a stud. All I had to do is cut the nails for the original box, pull them, and the box out, and install the new box.
Now I have all 3 switches in one box, on one plate. Today I get to patch out the hole from the old work box, do some minor dent repair to the drywall, sand, prime, and paint. Hopefully I can get it done right so it looks decent. Thank you, Jeff. Had it not been for watching you, and a few others I would not have known how to get it done!

I’m trying to install my own floating closet in the corner of a bedroom, but didn’t realize that it’s recommended to put wood behind the brackets/sockets. Actually loving this video, redoing the saggy clothing rods & super basic tacked on shelving in our master has been on my wish list for a while but lower on my to-do list until I came up with a plan. Banging out some melamine essential cabinet carcasses and hanging the rods within them is super easy (I’ve built some cabinets for my kitchen already) so maybe this gets moved up to be done over a weekend soon.

My 1983 doublewide has all 16" on center 2x4 studs, interior & exterior... Trusses are 16" on center. The disappointing part is the joists are 24". Just bought it a few years ago, in Northern Georgia. So sorry you got one with pressboard sub-flooring, our's has plywood. We have been renovating since we moved in, about 2/3's done. Taking every room down to studs, all new (upgraded) insulation in walls and ceiling and standard drywall going back in.

I’m curious how you found that shelving that wasn’t all damaged at the store! I went and looked at it, and all the pieces where damaged in a few places. I ended up buying plywood and I’m just gonna sand it and paint it

Hey Jeff I know you prob don't like talking about News but I think this might be good for the channel because it has to deal with the fire in Maui. There's so many questions I have about if they followed code and how important it is to have a fire barrier which I think those people did not have. Those house's seem to just burn down so fast people was saying in 20 mins. How can a full house burn down in 20 mins if you followed code ? Is there fire resistant dry wall ? It wasn't just one house it was like 1,000 house's so. It had to be a code issue right? Many questions please answer them in a video.

I am about to install a mirror sliding door from HD myself, which comes with a long metal bottom track, like the old one you replaced. Which new bottom track did you buy--the small one that is attached to the floor only in the middle? - Thank you for the idea. Did you have to remove the pin assembly pieces at the bottom of the doors? Thank you!

I have a 16'x80' 1998 mobile home with 16 in spacing, but the interior walls are mostly 2x3's. I was very surprised that the exterior walls are 2x6 cause I really expected 2x4.

might be because of newer constuction, or location/wind load. mine is a 1985 and the exteriors are 2x4 and interiors are 2x3

JEFF! I have a cracked basement wall slightly bowed in my small four plex. Emailed a local civil engineering firm and based off my description they quoted me 3500$ Canadian to do an inspection and provide a repair solution including permit and construction drawings. That is more than I collect in rent in two months. This is why I've been paying for this badge for 2+ years. Is there any reasonable way out of this that doesn't start with giving the enginerds 3.5k right off the bat??????? Please help me

You didn't show how to put those lights inside the closet. Are they hardwired or are they battery operated? That's the best part of the project, getting those cool lights in there. Do you have a source? This was a great job Nice work! That was very informative, you always do a great job of explaining what you're doing.

    Because you asked!
    Somerville, AL, USA
Double-wide mobile home manufactured 1999 by Palm Harbor Homes
Exterior walls: 2x4, 16" on center, fiberglass batt insulation
Interior walls: 2x4, 16" and 24" on center, random. Interior walls free-floating (top plate not anchored to ceiling), with a mix of 3/8" drywall and 1/4" vinyl panelling depending on the room.
Roof/Ceiling: 2x6, 24" on center, vaulted throughout house, blown-in cellulose insulation. Wall height at perimeter is 7'6", at center is 9'10" (2 in 12 pitch)
Electrical: Copper 14-2 throughout each half, with five aluminum crossover runs (properly terminated for copper/aluminum junction)
Plumbing: Upinor Pex A with incorrect crimping method used, leaks abound.
And quite possibly the weirdest feature, a light switch mounted 1' above the breaker panel that causes all 240V appliances to run at 120V. I do not understand what purpose this could possibly serve, and I'm scared to touch it because I don't understand it. LOL

Oregon, 1980 mobile. 2x6 floorboards, 16 on center, 2by 4 exterior walls, 2x4 load baring center walls, 2x2 non load walls. pathetic. I found the non load thing by mounting a tv with a 2.5 in screw for a tv.
