How do you feel about level 5 vs 6? I have a ten year old that’s a solid reader and I didn’t know if I should do 5 or 6. I looked at the placement test but both levels look similar…

Hi :) I have a 10 year old boy this year and he is doing Level 4. We did Level 3 last year. We can sometimes do two lessons in one day but because he struggles with writing, I decided to use level 4 instead of 5. When I asked this question in the MBs group last year, everyone recommended I place him according to his writing level. We also do extra writing practice on the side and use IEW's Fix It Grammar and All About Spelling for extra practice . I hope this helps with placement.
MasterBooks also has sample pages on their website for all their levels. I think it's better to go fast and review than place him in a too advanced level that leads to frustration - I made that mistake last year by choosing a very classical writing intensive program that totally backfired on me :(

Thanks I ended up buying both! My daughter definitely enjoys reading the my fav Bible stories than the 10 min devotional right now so we are doing 5 to make sure we hit all the basics. I will also purchase iew and fix it grammar. We also use all about spelling. Hoping that rounds everything out for a complete language arts program. How do you like using masterbooks language lessons, spelling, iew all together and how much time do you use to teach all those? Do you do anything additional for literature? Sorry for all the questions!

@@michelleagyemang868 no worries ! I do Fix It maybe once or twice a week - we do 2 days per day . He hates writing so I don’t make him rewrite the sentences just fix them. For spelling in LLFLE I make him to the exercise and think of the sentences and he spells them orally . We use all about spelling because he likes to know why words are spelled the way they are and can’t just memorize spelling words . LA has traditionally been a fight so I try not to spend more than 10 min for spelling and grammar each in a day.
And we’re not consistent with those . LLFLE4 is our core and for fix it we’re just on Week 7 and AAS on Week 6 🥴I’ve stopped IEW for now because of his hate for writing it was causing a whole lot of tears . Last year we just did LLFLE 3 and AAS3
This year I added in Fix It Lvl 1
Next year I hope to try adding in writing again 🫣
LLFLE 4 takes us anywhere from 20-30 min per day on average .
We do a lot of read alouds and use Reading Detective for reading comprehension and he answers orally .
This year I’m really only focussing on having him enjoy school because the last two years have been tears and fights . I feel like this year we’re finally turning the corner and I try to keep lessons short for him. That was his main draw to MasterBooks :)

@@michelleagyemang868 we are a Christian family and he lately really got hooked on Ted Dekker’s youth books (he’s got 19 now )
We read one series - he loved it and wanted me to keep reading ..this coming from a kid who hated reading / read alouds etc.
so this year I got his entire collection during the sale and we’ve been working our way though them.
He also has assigned reading he does and he enjoys the 101 Favourite Stories as well :) he’s finally starting to draw the pictures too which is great 😊
