Hey Joel, after seeing your Alfa’s Stelvio quadrifoglio review I did immediately subscribe to your channel 😁 brilliant content as well as all the other videos, well done! If you’ve got a chance, would love to enjoy a proper review about the GIULIA quadrifoglio too!
Great purchase. Can’t beat a Boxster. I drove an 02 2.7 manual recently and enjoyed it. Forgot how tight the seats were though glad it wasn’t just me 😂
You are literally one step ahead of me all the time Joel, I have been looking at these as they feel slightly overlooked at the moment. The one and only thing to consider is the IMS, once that's swapped out you're golden.
Looking forward to seeing your long term thoughts on this compared to the Z4. How reliable it has been, running costs etc. Congrats on the new purchase mate
@@itsjoel buying a 2.5L as my second car, can you document like practicality as im gonna commute with it for about 30 mins a day as i work close to home, my dream second car and almost bought a 1997 with 66k miles just yesterday
Great find! I picked one up in March and haven’t stopped smiling since. Speak to your local OPC and get it on the Classic Register (it’s free and they give you some stuff too like a nice metal badge and a pair of number plate surrounds). Enjoy!
Bought my 986 last year in lapis blue and absolutely love it. All the sports car you need and a genuine analogue, old school driving experience that makes you smile from ear to ear. A manual gearbox, naturally aspirated, mid engine weight distribution and it’s a Porsche! What’s not to love! I was just waiting for IMS to be mentioned in the comments…think it was 5 comments in! 😂 Great buy, Joel 👏
Great to see you enjoying another 2 seater sports car. Loved your Z4 videos. Hope to see lots of boxter footage in the coming months. Keep up the good work💪
Loved the drive-by at 8.50 Joel ! Had my eye on one of these for 15 years but have yet to do it……. Like most of us - quick flick to Auto Trader as soon as this video finishes!
Amazing Joel, love it!! I’m thinking of purchasing one myself… miss that roadster feel as you say. I started with a MX5, then z3, then Alfa GTV. Need the 2 seats back in my life! Would be great to see more content!
Joel - I managed to get a 2000 Boxster S about a month ago. Had been off the road for 3 years, owner had lost the service book, so I expected the worst - I decided to take a punt and managed to get it for £1600. After spending just £600 servicing it and fixing a few bits, it is now MOT’d, serviced and running brilliantly. The best punt I have ever taken.
Great purchase! A well presented and spec’d example, litronic lights, hard back sport seats with embossed leather and nice alloys👍. I’ve been waiting for you to get boxster since your collaboration video with Ben and his black 987.
At 2:24 you can see there as been some kind of respray to the bonnet or the front bumper as the colous is completely different, just in case you want to take a look on that. The gap between pannels is algo out of place. Such a bargain anyway.
Definitely document the process on taking it to a garage and getting the IMS / RMS checked out and what their thoughts are, and even maybe a bore score check. I have an 987 S and would be super interested in this.
The Boxster 986 (1997-1999) has a 96.20 (2480 cc) engine which has the original double row bearing and has no problems. From 2000 to 2002 were M 96.22; from 2003 to 2004 of M 96.23; the S from 2000 to 2002 for M 96.21 and from 2003 to 2004 for M96.24. who have the IMS problem.
Joel, considering buying one of these. Change the tyres and get the belts checked. Check the correct spark plugs are fitted. If you have the skills change the fluids and you will have a great car. I will follow with interest.
The channel just keeps getting better and better. Top work on getting what looks like a fairly sorted Boxster. I would be interested to see what an inspection would find. keep up the good work Joel, looking forward to some more content on this motor :)
Happy 2.5 owner here. Some nuggets of advice, do not spank these engines from cold. Keep revs below 2k until you have some heat in the engine. Don't track day it unless you have the sump extension fitted, as these engines hold the bear minimum quantity of oil required for road driving. IMS bearing, your decision on that topic just do your research. The 3.2 from this era will absolutely have a single row bearing though. Boxster is all about the subline handling as they are nigh on 50/50 weight distribution, straight line performance is good but not by modern turbo hot hatch territory.
Last month I purchased a 2003 2.7 facelift boxster for the same price as you Joel, it even has the same Carrera wheels! I've had it inspected and does need a few things as preventive measures but it's great fun for the money!
Hi Joel, love it. Please don't paint the wheels black mate . My friend has a 987 s 3.2. He has just damaged the engine after changing the clutch, and the timing chain jumped a tooth and it's bent the valves, ouch. Big bills. I love the colour. German sports cars look great in silver, they just look so right. What stopped me buying a Boxster was being 6ft 4in, in my pumps and my head being higher than the top of windscreen. They are very tight in the cabin. Watch that back end mate. They can snap around sometimes.
Blue roof and silver paint, awesome combo! Also, the fact that it's an S is another plus point. Really interested to see where you take this car. Cheers!
Great choice! My dad is 77 and has only recently sold his S as he couldn’t really get in and out without a struggle anymore. I found him an E36 330ci instead. Great car and just as much fun if not more than my 996 C4.
Nice one Joel. There are some real bargains out there if you search with patience. Enjoy these cars whilst you can. In your lifetime young fella, enjoying motoring will become unlawful. The Green Meanies always lurk. Enjoyed those of your outputs so far seen. One thing would enhance them further in my view, and some others judging by come feedback and comments I've read. That would be more actual under the bonnet, spanner and tools content. Old cars like this one ALWAYS have issues both large and small.
From first impressions this is very much a sports car in comparison to the Z4, however I think the Z4 remains the better long distance mile muncher. Time will tell…
What a car Joel, makes me even more excited.....I'm collecting mine on Saturday! I've been told you get smiles per gallon and you proved this by just seeing you drive the car.
I know they're not local to you but I'd 100% recommend Cotswold Porsche as an indie. We did the same as you and bought a super cheap Boxster in April this year - ours is a pre-facelift 2.5, and Cotswold have been awesome.
The only downside (for me) I found with the boxter is the possibility of water damage to the control module if you leave it parked in the rain dor too long. Other than that, mine was pure delight (it just went where I pointed it - never experienced anything like that elsewhere).
I love the Porsche, I always wanted one as a kid. This is like fulfilling a childhood dream. And it's looking really good with the red brake caliphers, cool big rims, no dents, discolorations or other visible abuses. I think it's an excellent purchase. I'm curious how it will be to drive this for a while. Looking forward for more videos, like how it is for daily driving it, the pro's and con's.
Well this is a great surprise Joel but can’t wait to see how things go. Keep up the good work and can’t wait to see where your going with the 7 series 😀
Hi Joel, love the new car looking forward to lots more content on it. The first thing that stuck me was just how clean it looks on camera, it looks practically new, I hope your still enjoying it
I have had my 03 Boxster S since 2019 March. It is a fantastic driver. I just need to do some front end suspension work on mine in the near future to synch up some wiggles. It has been a delightful little 2 seater.
I remember well the earlier Z4 vids - they actually inspired me to buy a Z4M which I still have. At that point I already had a Boxster S, great cars despite all the hairdresser comments from people who have never driven one. I had IMS done last year just to be sure but to be honest it was a waste of money, the one in it was apparently in perfect condition but I fell for the internet scaremongering - my bad. One of my funniest memories with this car was pulling into a petrol station and someone said the classic line "Couldn't afford a 911 then?" to which I replied "Yes, I have a 911 Turbo, I just bought this to piss you off" which ended that conversation!! Enjoy!
Great to stay on the German Sports car theme. Really pleased that you bought a manual Gearbox too as the Tiptronic ones can be a nightmare on these. Looking forward to see how you Get on with the Porsche compared to your old Z4. Enjoy it 👍
Looks like fun Joel, I am getting a Z4 soon, mainly because I think I can fix almost anything on it myself. I remember how much fun front engine and rear-wheel drive can be and cannot wait to have that driving experience again after owning front-wheel drives for far too long. Hope the mid-engined experience gives you even more fun :) Happy motoring ;)
Great purchase, would love to see some mods content on this: Backbox delete / new dampers / lowering springs / wheel spacers / intake upgrade / Michelin tyres. Would be a weapon!
Looking forward to seeing the series of vlogs Joel. With a number of youtubers doing then ‘buying a cheap sports car’ I wonder if it’s worth covering the reality of ‘running costs’ for what is ultimately an expensive car when new cost. I release insurance is a wild card but you could mention the grouping, the cost of road tax, as you say the cost of replacing tyres for appropriate ones, servicing etc. It would be good to see the balance between the ‘cheap buy’ and the reality of the cost of running it? Might be pleasantly surprising if it’s also a good news story? Cheers, Kevin.
I was thinking about doing this and I'm kinda glad you did so I don't have to 😂 I think its a great spec and a really nice thing to document, looking forward to more.
Thats a great price in today's market! Thats the car and model (2002 Boxster S 3.2) That got me started. Artic Silver with a black top. After that moved to a 987.2 S, 981S and now in an Alfa 4c Spider.
Sold my Z4 35i last year and really miss having a 2 seater so have been looking for a Boxster S. Looking forward to more videos. Wish I had spotted the one you got 😂😂
I've been thinking about getting a Boxster recently, not too fussed about speed as much as having something that's fun to drive. Would love to see vids on costs for repair, any pitfalls to avoid etc.
Would like to see your thoughts after you drive it awhile. I'm one of those seemingly rare people that owned a z4 si, later bought an 09 987.2 Boxster S based on all the great reviews it gets, then sold it and bought another z4 si as I enjoyed driving it more. Boxster drives great and is a wonderful car no doubt, but it was less involving to me, and so not as fun. It all comes down to individual preference.
Great timing, I've had my Boxster S for just over a month (also an ex Z4 Coupe owner), and the Porsche is something special for sure, although I paid a lot more for mine, but it does have full PSH and a warranty, but still even for what I paid it's a lot of car for the money. I also just bought mine to enjoy, having come from a string of modified cars, the 986 doesn't need much fettling I don't think. Look forward to seeing what you do with the car! 👍
Its nice to see a comment from High Peak Autos. You will get one from Jayemm too I would imagine. Nice review of the Boxted (bloody autocorrect). I look forward to the next one Joel.
I was looking for a roadster a few months ago. Took a look at some Miatas, Boxsters, Z4s, and a few others. Ended up going with the Z4, excited to see how the Boxster S treats you
I had one of these, great car. Porsche horsepower definitely worth more than other makes! I love the way it sort of does three noises: at idle and low speeds it sounds like a washing machine, at mid-range it’s got real growl, and then at the top end it’s pure shriek! I actually committed around the M25 for two years in it, before I finally gave up and got something less tiring to drive that way. I personally didn’t have any issues, but servicing can be expensive.
@@itsjoel yes it does! I picked mine up new (those were the days) and when I started it I think it had 7 miles on it, and it sounded like a bag of spanners! As it loosened up it did sound a BIT better at idle. I went to the garden centre once to buy my Mum a birthday present. I found this lovely wooden mushroom thing, but to my dismay it wouldn’t fit in the froot: so I took the spare out, and then it fitted. The ex-wife had to travel back home with the spare on her lap, she was NOT impressed, I still laugh about it today! One of the few cars I was genuinely excited about…
Mate I’ve just watched your M240i quicksilver exhaust video and now I’ve discovered this one, wow we really do have a lot in common, new subscriber and looking forward to catching up to all your videos 👍
You’ve aced it at this money, sports seats, gear knob, door handles, centre console, glass rear screen etc etc .... ps check the tyre pressures it says stupid high pressures like 44psi... makes them ride choppy 👍I run mine at 32psi makes a huge difference as you won’t be driving round at 150mph all of the time ...
Very interested to follow your journey with this car as I almost bought this exact example myself! It was at a higher price point when I test drove and chickened out because of the incomplete history. Good luck with it, hope it's one that I regret not buying!
Hi Joel, I've just subbed from your other Porche Boxster video where you have it serviced - awesome video BTW, really informative. I'm also looking at a Boxster S and jheeeze, how you got that car for that money is incredible, I'm struggling to find an equally as good one for £6-7k! Awesome purchase 😎 Looking forward to learning more through your videos and helping me make my purchase!
Can we see a video on your Porsche Boxster S service getting done for the problems it has. It would be interesting to know the issues and cost involved.
I never thought i would see this car on YT. I am looking for a boxster s facelift and saw this one. Thought the car was listed incorrectly so didn’t call. Definitely regret that now, great purchase I am jealous
Hi Joel, could I ask how much your insurance is. I'm 24 and my last the cars have been defender 90's and I'm looking to move to something sporty for a while
I bought an early 986 2.7l in that same spec and loved it. Sadly crashed it in the ice! I maintain you can’t get a sweeter ride, they are the only premium sports bargain left!
That’s a great spec car, and alot for the money! Lots of nice options and a facelift. I do miss my old one. The more you drive it the better they drive (they appreciate being used). Some fresh Michelin tyres and you’ll be away (forget N ratings)
Early days but would be interested in knowing about maintenance costs. I heard they are exorbonate but can it be done reasonably by specialists. Let us know, please
Hey brother! I'm in the market now for a 2-seater roadster, and I've been really iffy on the Boxster. Your vid may sway me! I love the Porsche, but when it coms to reliability and repair costs I've been hesitant, to say the least.

I was looking for a roadster a few months ago. Took a look at some Miatas, Boxsters, Z4s, and a few others. Ended up going with the Z4, excited to see how the Boxster S treats you
Nice surprise Joel, best of luck with the new car, looking forward to the detailing video👌
It literally sounds like a tractor at Idle doesn’t it!
One of the few cars I was genuinely excited about…
Great purchase!! Can’t wait for more content on this
Looks a great buy to me. I’d like you to take it to your garage for them to give it a once over like you did with the 7 series.
Hope you have deep pockets, mate!
Can’t wait to see more videos on this car. Building a good car collection Joel!
Very interested to follow your journey with this car as I almost bought this exact example myself! It was at a higher price point when I test drove and chickened out because of the incomplete history. Good luck with it, hope it's one that I regret not buying!
Had one of these up on my wall as a teenager! Love it! Video on a full snow foam deep clean an detail ASMR pls :)
Great find and totally get why you felt the need to buy :) looking forward to the follow up videos on this
Can’t wait to make some more!
Hi Joel,
I've just subbed from your other Porche Boxster video where you have it serviced - awesome video BTW, really informative. I'm also looking at a Boxster S and jheeeze, how you got that car for that money is incredible, I'm struggling to find an equally as good one for £6-7k!
Awesome purchase 😎
Looking forward to learning more through your videos and helping me make my purchase!
Good call Joel, I have been after one of these for years...maybe one day- all the best with it mate !
Can we see a video on your Porsche Boxster S service getting done for the problems it has. It would be interesting to know the issues and cost involved.
Love to see an episode fixing any issues then making improvements.
dam... very sweet deal. Love the sound of the flat 6. Keen to hear how the performance compares to the old 3.0 Z4
I never thought i would see this car on YT. I am looking for a boxster s facelift and saw this one. Thought the car was listed incorrectly so didn’t call. Definitely regret that now, great purchase I am jealous
As a Fairly new subscriber to the channel, I am thoroughly enjoying the videos. The condition of the car seems incredible for the price!
Hi Joel, could I ask how much your insurance is. I'm 24 and my last the cars have been defender 90's and I'm looking to move to something sporty for a while
Congrats on the new car! Love the blue interior
Thank you, me too!
What a great buy. I have the same car,. I’ve had it for three years and haven’t lost that smile yet.
they are so underrated. I have been so tempted to buy one over here in the Netherlands. They are currently very undervalued as well.
The exact kind of car buying I do too. Buy the convertible at the end of summer 😂 I hope you get some lovely roof down autumn days 👌🏽
What a great choice really looking forward to following your journey with this one
Lets see some suspension upgrades and detailing! (perhaps de-badge, upgrade wheels...lights...sound system) Nice Video! (Tom - in Beijing)
I bought an early 986 2.7l in that same spec and loved it. Sadly crashed it in the ice! I maintain you can’t get a sweeter ride, they are the only premium sports bargain left!
Great 3 car garage, no wink links. Can I ask you please what is your Bluetooth solution for the Boxster? I’ve a 997, same no connectivity. Cheers
Superb buy, what a peach of a car for the money! Sounds wonderful too 👍🏼😊
That’s a great spec car, and alot for the money! Lots of nice options and a facelift. I do miss my old one. The more you drive it the better they drive (they appreciate being used). Some fresh Michelin tyres and you’ll be away (forget N ratings)
Interested how this will play out. Currently saving up for a toy. Been running a boring car for 8 years now. Need to motoring excitement in my life.
