We would say, "she is with child." I am 71 years old now, and I remember this term; saying that a woman was pregnant was not polite when I was a child. We also referred to adults as Mr., Mrs. and Miss, at the beginning of their surnames. Children did not call adults by their first names. Those times were more respectful times. Finally, I watch your podcasts on my TV screen, usually while knitting with a cup of coffee. God bless you, Tommy, and your precious little baby.❤

I like "guter Hoffnung", also "in Erwartung"... :) In English there are various polite and less polite ways that people used to use more than now. My granny (b. 1916) used to say someone had "started a baby", which I always thought was sweet. You could say "expecting" or even "in an interesting condition" (!). With a smile, you might say someone has a "bun in the oven", too, though that wouldn't be in polite society!!

I'm so late watching your video. My son got married this month so life was crazy!!! I can't wait to hear how your ultrasound went and possibly you are able to tell us the gender. I usually watch your videos while crafting myself. In English we don't have different words for death or pregnancy for animals and humans but we do have different names when it comes to the animals having babies. For example cats and dogs have litters, and rabbits have kindlings, and chickens have a clutch of chicks. I love your ending to this video when you talk about being in Good Hope versus how do doctors treat pregnancy now especially in america. There is a movie I would recommend called The Business of Being Born it was fantastic and talks about the topic of how the medical doctors as well as the movies instill fear. So this makes me love the German saying you talked about " she is in good hope"
Always watch you on my pc while knitting. I like you being so organised and determined, with strong opinion and so feminine at the same time :) When talking about being pregnant we (in Latvian) in old days used to say "being in hopes" (in plural) but not anymore. Now we say " being in condition or situation state" or being pregnant (and this word in Latvian comes with root "heavy", "being heavy".) But for you I wish all the good hopes blessed by St. Mary, Mother of Our Lord!

On the Fridays during Lent I eat macaroni and cheese because I dislike fish. One of the language differences I use for food is that I feed the dog but I serve dinner to my family.

I had all the faith in the world you would receive such a gift. I heard you about your colours for your new baby. As recently as 80 or so years ago, blue was a colour for girls and pink for boys. Why? Blue is the colour of Mary the Madonna and pink is a lighter shade of red, the usual colour of military uniforms (if you’re British or from a Commonwealth Country). So, perhaps knowing this, you can knit what you love and without concern. I love to watch your episodes in the late afternoon while knitting and drinking tea. 💖

I am nearly seventy and found your talk about the word pregnant very interesting and I think it reflects cultural change mirrored here in England. I think society does emphasise purely biological aspect of humanity or the “human animal.” When I was young and would say to my mother that a neighbour had told me she was pregnant, my mother expressed strong dislike of the term saying that dogs get pregnant but ladies are “expecting.” This is similar to “in good hope” I think. We also would say that a lady is “in the family way” which is also pleasant. I’m afraid I was disrespectful and joked, Lo, our neighbour hath conceived and is with child! Lol.

You mentioned that the slippers your knitting for your guests are made from 100% wool and that you’ve made many pairs of them in the past. I’m curious to know how the 100% wool wears…..do you knit it with a tight gauge to add strength? Also, have you used yarn that has a mix of wool and nylon to add strength? I’d love to hear your experience in making these slippers and about how hard wearing they are. Thankyou for the inspiration, I’ve been wanting to find a slipper pattern to make as gifts for my grandchildren. If possible could you let us see them on someone’s foot……I also understand that, that might be asking too much. Thankyou again❤️

You could say "expecting" or even "in an interesting condition" (!). With a smile, you might say someone has a "bun in the oven", too, though that wouldn't be in polite society!!

His new book is called The War on Children which I look forward to reading. This whole subject is sad, but I know God will be there for those who seek Him with a whole heart. We say expecting in the USA for the expected blessing of a child. My husband sweetly says with child, which sounds so old fashioned and lovely. Prayers for you and yours.

Hello Anna! I adore the baby Battenberg blanket you are making for your precious baby! The colours are perfect for boy or girl. I do also love the house shoes and will look those up and make some for our home. How do I watch you? Well, I make a cup of coffee, get out my current knitting (often it's socks and I'm a huge fan of Opal yarn) and I will sit and knit and watch and drink my cuppa! My absolute favorite knitting is vanilla socks, and then garter stitch dishcloths. Just basic things, but they bring me such joy and satisfaction. My motivation is not sitting idle! In English we don't have different words for death or pregnancy for animals and humans but we do have different names when it comes to the animals having babies. For example cats and dogs have litters, and rabbits have kindlings, and chickens have a clutch of chicks.
I love your ending to this video when you talk about being in Good Hope versus how do doctors treat pregnancy now especially in america. There is a movie I would recommend called The Business of Being Born it was fantastic and talks about the topic of how the medical doctors as well as the movies instill fear. So this makes me love the German saying you talked about " she is in good hope"

When talking about being pregnant we (in Latvian) in old days used to say "being in hopes" (in plural) but not anymore. Now we say " being in condition or situation state" or being pregnant (and this word in Latvian comes with root "heavy", "being heavy".)
But for you I wish all the good hopes blessed by St. Mary, Mother of Our Lord!

Congratulations on 8,000. I usually work on my knitting project while watching your podcast. I do stop knitting if I want to look closely at the item you are showing. On the Fridays during Lent I eat macaroni and cheese because I dislike fish. One of the language differences I use for food is that I feed the dog but I serve dinner to my family.

Anna, you have many comments and I didn’t have time to read them first before posting this. Firstly, congratulations! I am not surprised you are pregnant. I had all the faith in the world you would receive such a gift. I heard you about your colours for your new baby. As recently as 80 or so years ago, blue was a colour for girls and pink for boys. Why? Blue is the colour of Mary the Madonna and pink is a lighter shade of red, the usual colour of military uniforms (if you’re British or from a Commonwealth Country). So, perhaps knowing this, you can knit what you love and without concern.

I live with MS and spend a large portion of my time in bed, so I either watch your videos while lying in bed or if I'm having a good day, I sit in my recliner and knit while watching RUclips on the TV. I'm grateful to have access to the technology we have available these days to not only relieve the boredom and gain inspiration, but to witness the joy in so many people's lives....... when i struggle to find joy in my own life, it's so important for me to look outside myself and find it in others! 💜💜💜 I'm looking forward to seeing what you make for your little one!

I am nearly seventy and found your talk about the word pregnant very interesting and I think it reflects cultural change mirrored here in England.
I think society does emphasise purely biological aspect of humanity or the “human animal.”
When I was young and would say to my mother that a neighbour had told me she was pregnant, my mother expressed strong dislike of the term saying that dogs get pregnant but ladies are “expecting.”
This is similar to “in good hope” I think.
We also would say that a lady is “in the family way” which is also pleasant.
I’m afraid I was disrespectful and joked, Lo, our neighbour hath conceived and is with child! Lol.
So happy for you and your husband. Babies are such a blessing ❤. I love to knit and watch your podcast.

Just now I'm knitting socks for my granddaughters, one is two and a half year and the other is one and a half year . Then the third grandchild is a little girl from nearly 6 months. You mentioned that the slippers your knitting for your guests are made from 100% wool and that you’ve made many pairs of them in the past. I’m curious to know how the 100% wool wears…..do you knit it with a tight gauge to add strength? Also, have you used yarn that has a mix of wool and nylon to add strength? I’d love to hear your experience in making these slippers and about how hard wearing they are. Thankyou for the inspiration, I’ve been wanting to find a slipper pattern to make as gifts for my grandchildren. If possible could you let us see them on someone’s foot……I also understand that, that might be asking too much. Thankyou again❤️
I usually Knit while I watch your episodes. Most of the time I will have tea or coffee and a sweet of some sort. Typically there's a dog in my lap. This is my time to relax! People and animals are both said to be pregnant though both have other terms exclusively for them if that makes sense. Same with eating. I always watch your podcast on my phone while I knit,outside on our deck if possible! That’s where I am right now. I get outside whenever possible.
The colors you used in your blanket are really really gorgeous and they mix wonderfully. I think you chose well. I'm definitely always working on a project whilst watching your podcast. Either knitting or cross stitch. I feel like I have to accomplish something while on You Tube. Today I'm right near the end of the foot of the second sock for one of my sons-in-law. Speaking of trends, what do you think of the Emotional support chicken. I'd been seeing it everywhere and loved the thought of being able to use up some of my older worsted weight yarn so I cast one on. So far it's really fun.
