Truthfully, there is no difference between the two. Things that are for believers are for everyone who will believe, in the world, or otherwise. Whatever we do, if we comfort, exhort, rebuke, or whatever we do, we should do it for anyone to hear. Either focus goes to the extreme, you lose the calling of God.
It’s interesting how wrapped up we get in whether something is “Christian” or not. I think a more appropriate way to look at music and things in general is “Honoring to God” and “not honoring to God”. It changes the way you see everything. Even with how we respond to things that we disagree with. Glad to see this conversation taking place 🙏🔥
Fr. My boundary is: does this oppose God's character? Are there half naked women in your music videos? Are you bragging about killing people and glorifying violence? Other than that, God made the terms and conditions clear. We should not be gatekeeping God's gate FOR HIM. He's got it.
There is a difference between christian artists making art that is obviously influenced by the gospel, and worship music. C.S. Lewis and Tolkien made amazing works that aren't explicitly teaching the gospel word for word, but they have an amazing gospel inspired message. Now worship music in my opinion is in much worse shape. The standard for that has dropped immensely. Hymns that have lasted hundreds of years are drenched in the word of God as they should be. Now, we'll just sing whatever's popular and catchy in church without scrutinizing the lyrics. In my opinion musicians shouldn't even be on the Altar, but off to the side. I wonder how many people would be interested in being on a worship team if they weren't the center of attention on a stage.
It was very hard being in the church choir just because of the politicking that goes on in church. It seems some people just want the limelight instead of just worshipping God. I’m happiest off the stage sitting with the other churchgoers, without the extra attention on me.
I also say this as a long time worship musician. There were a lot of politics on some groups and I’ve heard some pastors say that there are a lot of problems that often times arise from worship teams. One or two have said it’s so bad to the point where they dissolved the worship team altogether. Crazy stuff
I would love to elaborate on your comment. I honestly wouldn’t mind at all being off to the side leading worship or backing up the lead. I feel for me it’ll take more of the tension and nerves to be perfect. I could truly ugly cry and maybe even type into his presence faster if I didn’t have to be on a “ pedestal“.

I think this is a great convo. Yo, my son and I had this exact convo earlier today. I think CHH is a form of ministry and different artists have different callings on how they are supposed to use their gifts. Like take Datin', he uses his battle rap background to call out darkness all around us, that other artists won't touch on. Then you got Hulvey and KB that straight up get into deep worship in some of their songs. But you also, have some artists that try too hard to be like the world and be accepted by the world instead of being a Light to the world. That's just my thoughts.

When I first got saved a year ago, all I knew was a bit of the Christian music I grew up on, but Caleb got me into Christian rap, I found out about Lecrae through Caleb, but the point is Caleb got me into Christian rap and followed KB and Hulvey. Christianity and Rap were something, I couldn't even Phantom despite growing up in the Era of Kirk Franklin, but something about Caleb's music that was different, for that I thank Jesus, I was introduced to someone so down-to-earth yet wholesome and intentional in everything he does.
When my kids were little they used to ask me why Christian music makes them feel sad and depressed. They would find a song every now and than that did not make them feel that way like "it's a beautiful day" by Jamie Grace. We love that song. Anyway, I started praying while I listened to a lot of Christian music. I got a strange feeling g about a lot of it, and it was depressing for the most part. Praising the lord should be a joyful experience. Even if your going through a hard time, and the song is helping you at that moment, God is a God of love and you should feel that while listening to music that is speaking God's true message. I always tell my kids, don't put God in a box. He is much to big for that! He is everywhere, he is in everything, and he is in as much as you want him to be in, just believe that with your while hearts! So, we started taking songs off the radio, that were not ment to be praise and worship songs.... at all, and singing them as if they were songs about Jesus. We had so much fun doing this. Sharing new songs with eachother that we could turn into praise and worship songs. Calming them in Jesus's name! Brought the joy back into music for our family. It was and is fun to do. Also, another thing it did for my kids especially was, ya know in this day in age, children are going to hear lots of music. Much of it, has nothing to do with God, acually much of it is anti God's message. What this did to that music was helped my kids to hear it in a different way. They started hearing a message from Jesus, instead of what it was ment for. Anyway, just thought I would share that. God bless u all!!

Been watching and listening to Ruslan for a minute, and can truly appreciate the longevity of endurance and the maturity that he has been established in. Utilizing this platform to help steward long term or new listeners of Christian hip hop and proving an understanding that could be agreed with! 👏🏼
Plus alot of Christians use their testimony in their music to inspire people and inform them on how God work in people lives. And testimony is powerful cus I got saved from hearing someone's testimony

He paved the way for so many artist today…it annoys me fr cause I’m like did Caleb expect to have a real convo in twitter like that? 😂 I get it but Lecrae like 40 something, got kids, a wife, and a record label lol I use to be on the same tip as Caleb when I was younger, until life hit and now I 100% get Lecrae’s journey as it mirrors my own. Caleb has a lot of growing to do…Lecrae started the same way as us all and as we walk out this life it makes us question, deconstruct, etc.

Don’t judge the messenger and how God uses them to deliver God’s message. God can use anybody and anything. What wins me over to Christ may not win the next guy over to Christ. We all have different backgrounds and different genres of music that we enjoy. So the way one artist ministers to me may not work for someone else and God knows that.That’s why he uses different artist from very different experiences and backgrounds to minister to music. God uses people that we can relate to.
Ruslan is on point. I wrote my dissertation on Christian Hip Hop a year ago and cited tunnel rats, lamp mode, etc in my paper. I would say we are in the 3rd or 4th generation of Christian Hip Hop.
I'm gonna say the same thing I said to someone earlier who was talking about doja cat being a devil worshipper I've literally stopped listening to any main stream hip hop Rap or rock music I have only been listening to Christian hip hop it sounds just as good if not better with the same hardships and struggles that make that music "glamorous" like jail childhood struggles gang relation but with a defining message that God is the one to save you and get you out of those hardships. Keep up the amazing work and I hope to see yall come across my my pandora christian hip hop station.

I was reading today in my Bible we can have unity with fellow believers but that doesn’t mean we have to compromise with what they do. When we call each other out it should always come out of a heart of love. It should always be too get that person closer to Jesus
the issue is legalistic draw the line at "compromise" there's a line of sin. and then there's a line of preferences. it's IMPORTANT to know the difference and not assume everything you disagree with (not saying Jesus enough in a song, using a specific kinda beat, or tattoos) is compromise.

I believe for a lot of artists "Christian Music" has become music made by 'Christians' Instead of Music about Christ. And there is a big difference to me. I don't want music about everything in the world but made by a Christian. I want music about Christ, music centered around GOD. I don't think you can call something Christian Music just because it's created by a Christian. It has to be based on the content. If a Country artist makes a song that sounds more Hip Hop they put that song on the Hip Hop charts and in that genre. The Artist doesn't decide that the industry decides that based on the content and the song construction.
This is dope stuff. Most of the CCM (Elevation, Bethel, Hillsong, etc) have always turned me off. Ive been trying to find more "indie" spotify playlists and ive been trying to do the same with CHH also. Some of the big ones aint even it anymore. I just want Jesus. Alot of the times the CCM or CHH stuff will include non Christian stuff on the "Radio based on *insert song*"
This was a great conversation! I'm just going to say this. I live here in Orlando, Fl and you'll be surprised that many young Christian artists dont even have a church home and not being discipled or mentored by anyone in the church...partly because they dont have a consistent church they go to. They are just going off their own way and if they are in a church they dont have respect for elders or pastors and are hesitate to communicate anything thats going on in their life because they think they got it all figured out because of some "success" they attribute to God's blessings. They want their pastors as buddies instead of mentors to just support everything they want to do and they believe just because they are poppin in their career means that their walk with God is solid. This causes them not to seek Godly wisdom about their steps and the success adds to their ego. This is just what I've seen with some artists in Orlando despite their music being awesome and them preaching about Jesus in their music..some of these brothers and sisters' life..doesnt line up with their doctrine. I'm not sure how a Christian can grow in Christ without being shepparded consistently within a local body.
I would say less shepherded and more held accountable. Certain things in a Christians life may escape their notice and they go on in them without much thought, but God is sufficient for these things. Yet, you can't fix what you don't know is a problem and if you forget about the problem because your busy, you go on in the same madness. The problem isn't so much then being guideless as it is being ignorant, no offense. So they need other Christians, not because they need someone to guide them, but because in not the greatest in the kingdom and neither are they, unless we do all the things we are taught to do.
@@xavierthomas5835 Exactly. Although your choice of words are different..we are saying the same thing. If it's ignorance then ignorance needs guidance from someone who has wisdom. It's not saying perfect guidance but as Christians, I believe counsel from elders or pastors is always wise than self-counseling. It doesn't mean every counseling word would be correct. But it does help the person being counseled consider their blind spots they aren't probably thinking about. We all have blind spots.

ATWT was definitely a Christian album going through Crae’s life during that season, and arguably his best work. I agree about the Ty $ign part, but that’s what happens when you put a bigger name into a song. You can’t expect these type of guys to spit a verse on a Christian song all of the sudden. For example, Donda, need I say more. And we could also argue that Jon and Ruslan don’t make “Christian” music sometimes. Respect to Caleb, but this is ridiculous. He’s the goat for a rzn, and the game is changing where artists don’t have to shout out Bible verses all the time like Crae’s rebel days. CHH is not Christian rap. CHH is artists talking about their faith walks. Whereas Caleb I believe is more of a Christian rapper than a lot of people. I would put Hulvey in that circle too. What is Christian rap and what is faith walk rap? They aren't even two sides to the same coin, they're the same thing. You ain't Christian if you ain't walking by faith and you ain't ealing by faith unless you're Christian. It'd just another division the devil wants to place in the way of sound doctrine, which we are to uphold above all things. If we talk about our experience in this life, it is to draw the lost and exhort the found. If we talk about scripture and Sola scriptura, we talk about that to save the lost and exhort the found. There is no difference.
Secondly, we are to have no fellowship with farkness in the first place. We don't Hop on a song with a person whose life ain't about it and then expect the brother and sisters yo want to eat that. Even God would call that blind lambs and maimed goats, sacrifices that are strangled and dead. Such things are an abomination to God. Every praise and every song and every worship is to God. Trying to separate worship from our life should be like trying to take the white off rice. Don't make no sense.
Social media has been an extreme detriment in giving people a platform when they are in the phase of high zeal with minimum knowledge. The Bible even tells us that when Paul got converted he spent YEARS away from a bunch of other believers so he could pray and study and then took time to preach and connect to the Apostles

As a Christian who comes from a Congo ( a French speaking country) i find this subject so interesting because this is only concerning American Gospel music. One things I’ve notice is Afrobeat Gospel music and French Gospel music have different boundaries is still Holy and glorifying God but just culturally different.

I haven't finished watching the video, but regarding Cross Movement, Phanatic did a fairly extensive interview on the Myth Vision channel (the host himself is an ex-Christian) about why he de-converted. It seems that the process for him really gained traction after the Cross Movement ran its course and he went into education.

I think a lot of people fail to understand the heart and mind of any creative/artistic person. A lot of creative people like to use metaphors and analogies to describe one thing. So a person could be rapping we’re singing about a lion for example and be talking about Jesus. Like somethings are not so black-and-white. There is creative ways to talk about Jesus without overtly saying the name Jesus. I honestly think the creative process in the hard work that goes into itIt’s a form of worship. It takes a lot of work sometimes to be creative. I think God honors our commitment to find creative ways to honor him
I'm willing to cover secular music if it means connecting with non-believers. I've learned it's completely possible without compromising my Christian character or beliefs. This will most likely happen in the beginning of a set, for engagement. I've found that two things often happen: Non-believers stick around to hear what I have to say later, whether a personal struggle they can relate to or a gospel presentation, and Christians leave right away and DM me their disappointment while I'm literally up there doing what they think I should've done..I like what Lecrae said in an interview about him not being called to reach people in the garden if he grew up in the jungle. Perhaps the song is an engagement attempt in the radio space, to draw them in so he can drop his deeper content..the whole bait and switch ya naw mean? Whenever someone accues me of looking like the world, I always share about how God did the same thing. How much more like the world can you look than to wrap yourself in human flesh..something we would recognize.
I love what KB said at concert in CHH you have Spurgeon’s & CS Lewis’s broad spectrum of preachers in between but honoring God. CHH is the same Flame to KB both hitting the kingdom but at different approaches.

I've heard this convo for years now. I know the way most want to view it as Christians who are making music, not "Christian music." I get all that. I get that you don't have to say Jesus in every song. But, I can say this in regards to all that...PLEASE keep in mind though, EVERY DAY people are dying and going to hell by the masses. So, if you've been given this gift in bringing the precious, powerful, soul saving Gospel, then you don't have time to talk about the weather. The time is NOW. If you've been given this opportunity then the time is NOW to take it. If Satan don't take a day off in bringing his A game 24/7 full on converting souls to him, then how can we not be for real the flip side? That's one thing I see too often, is the concern to not be preachy. The thing is, you don't have to be preachy, but you can hit it hard with much more of all the life topics that are destroying people's lives. We're running out of time. The time is NOW more than EVER. I know you dudes know this. Praying for you bros.
It’s hard to build that community maybe it’s a mixture of me not going hard enough. But have been trying to build for a long time and that desire to want to break into the evangelical industrial complex is a real real thing. I felt that part of the convo.
If God is truly in this Christian rap space He is going to require a higher standard of content out of this space. The fact that you all are having this conversation is an indication of shift that God is requiring. Even to the point where reacting to offense has to go. Because if we are truly His disciples then we should already know that offense will come. And Ruslan I 100% agree with you regarding salvation vs discipleship. True Hip-Hop was created with the intention to change lives in the community of its listeners. Lecrae’s music did just that. His music changed and saved my life. Christianity is also meant to change lives but yet has damaged so many. If changing lives for the better is the Goal then talking about what does the opposite is necessary.

Tolkien is an inspiration to me on how I write. I wanna have stories with gospel centric messaging that all people can enjoy.

Mazing episode. What I really need is a CHH history podcast with some GOATS!
When my kids were little they used to ask me why Christian music makes them feel sad and depressed. They would find a song every now and than that did not make them feel that way like "it's a beautiful day" by Jamie Grace. We love that song. Anyway, I started praying while I listened to a lot of Christian music. I got a strange feeling g about a lot of it, and it was depressing for the most part. Praising the lord should be a joyful experience. Even if your going through a hard time, and the song is helping you at that moment, God is a God of love and you should feel that while listening to music that is speaking God's true message. I always tell my kids, don't put God in a box. He is much to big for that! He is everywhere, he is in everything, and he is in as much as you want him to be in, just believe that with your while hearts! So, we started taking songs off the radio, that were not ment to be praise and worship songs.... at all, and singing them as if they were songs about Jesus. We had so much fun doing this. Sharing new songs with eachother that we could turn into praise and worship songs. Calming them in Jesus's name! Brought the joy back into music for our family. It was and is fun to do. Also, another thing it did for my kids especially was, ya know in this day in age, children are going to hear lots of music. Much of it, has nothing to do with God, acually much of it is anti God's message. What this did to that music was helped my kids to hear it in a different way. They started hearing a message from Jesus, instead of what it was ment for. Anyway, just thought I would share that. God bless u all!!

I use to be on the same tip as Caleb when I was younger, until life hit and now I 100% get Lecrae’s journey as it mirrors my own. Caleb has a lot of growing to do…Lecrae started the same way as us all and as we walk out this life it makes us question, deconstruct, etc.

Don’t judge the messenger and how God uses them to deliver God’s message. God can use anybody and anything. What wins me over to Christ may not win the next guy over to Christ. We all have different backgrounds and different genres of music that we enjoy. So the way one artist ministers to me may not work for someone else and God knows that.That’s why he uses different artist from very different experiences and backgrounds to minister to music. God uses people that we can relate to.

Ruslan is on point. I wrote my dissertation on Christian Hip Hop a year ago and cited tunnel rats, lamp mode, etc in my paper. I would say we are in the 3rd or 4th generation of Christian Hip Hop.

I'm gonna say the same thing I said to someone earlier who was talking about doja cat being a devil worshipper I've literally stopped listening to any main stream hip hop Rap or rock music I have only been listening to Christian hip hop it sounds just as good if not better with the same hardships and struggles that make that music "glamorous" like jail childhood struggles gang relation but with a defining message that God is the one to save you and get you out of those hardships. Keep up the amazing work and I hope to see yall come across my my pandora christian hip hop station.

I was reading today in my Bible we can have unity with fellow believers but that doesn’t mean we have to compromise with what they do. When we call each other out it should always come out of a heart of love. It should always be too get that person closer to Jesus
the issue is legalistic draw the line at "compromise"
there's a line of sin. and then there's a line of preferences. it's IMPORTANT to know the difference and not assume everything you disagree with (not saying Jesus enough in a song, using a specific kinda beat, or tattoos) is compromise.

Yo he nails it! I grew up in the church, yet I've had to do more to walk and figure our my beliefs when my little kids started asking questions.
I believe for a lot of artists "Christian Music" has become music made by 'Christians'
Instead of
Music about Christ.
And there is a big difference to me. I don't want music about everything in the world but made by a Christian. I want music about Christ, music centered around GOD.
I don't think you can call something Christian Music just because it's created by a Christian.
It has to be based on the content. If a Country artist makes a song that sounds more Hip Hop they put that song on the Hip Hop charts and in that genre. The Artist doesn't decide that the industry decides that based on the content and the song construction.

This is dope stuff. Most of the CCM (Elevation, Bethel, Hillsong, etc) have always turned me off. Ive been trying to find more "indie" spotify playlists and ive been trying to do the same with CHH also. Some of the big ones aint even it anymore. I just want Jesus. Alot of the times the CCM or CHH stuff will include non Christian stuff on the "Radio based on *insert song*"

This was a great conversation! I'm just going to say this. I live here in Orlando, Fl and you'll be surprised that many young Christian artists dont even have a church home and not being discipled or mentored by anyone in the church...partly because they dont have a consistent church they go to. They are just going off their own way and if they are in a church they dont have respect for elders or pastors and are hesitate to communicate anything thats going on in their life because they think they got it all figured out because of some "success" they attribute to God's blessings. They want their pastors as buddies instead of mentors to just support everything they want to do and they believe just because they are poppin in their career means that their walk with God is solid. This causes them not to seek Godly wisdom about their steps and the success adds to their ego. This is just what I've seen with some artists in Orlando despite their music being awesome and them preaching about Jesus in their music..some of these brothers and sisters' life..doesnt line up with their doctrine. I'm not sure how a Christian can grow in Christ without being shepparded consistently within a local body.
I would say less shepherded and more held accountable. Certain things in a Christians life may escape their notice and they go on in them without much thought, but God is sufficient for these things. Yet, you can't fix what you don't know is a problem and if you forget about the problem because your busy, you go on in the same madness. The problem isn't so much then being guideless as it is being ignorant, no offense. So they need other Christians, not because they need someone to guide them, but because in not the greatest in the kingdom and neither are they, unless we do all the things we are taught to do.
@@xavierthomas5835 Exactly. Although your choice of words are different..we are saying the same thing. If it's ignorance then ignorance needs guidance from someone who has wisdom. It's not saying perfect guidance but as Christians, I believe counsel from elders or pastors is always wise than self-counseling. It doesn't mean every counseling word would be correct. But it does help the person being counseled consider their blind spots they aren't probably thinking about. We all have blind spots.

ATWT was definitely a Christian album going through Crae’s life during that season, and arguably his best work. I agree about the Ty $ign part, but that’s what happens when you put a bigger name into a song. You can’t expect these type of guys to spit a verse on a Christian song all of the sudden. For example, Donda, need I say more. And we could also argue that Jon and Ruslan don’t make “Christian” music sometimes. Respect to Caleb, but this is ridiculous. He’s the goat for a rzn, and the game is changing where artists don’t have to shout out Bible verses all the time like Crae’s rebel days. CHH is not Christian rap. CHH is artists talking about their faith walks. Whereas Caleb I believe is more of a Christian rapper than a lot of people. I would put Hulvey in that circle too. No downgrade for Caleb, but this is just where the game is heading. Overall I don’t feel this comment is needed. If you wanted to reach out to the goat, this was not the way to do it. (In my opinion)
What is Christian rap and what is faith walk rap? They aren't even two sides to the same coin, they're the same thing. You ain't Christian if you ain't walking by faith and you ain't ealing by faith unless you're Christian. It'd just another division the devil wants to place in the way of sound doctrine, which we are to uphold above all things. If we talk about our experience in this life, it is to draw the lost and exhort the found. If we talk about scripture and Sola scriptura, we talk about that to save the lost and exhort the found. There is no difference.
Secondly, we are to have no fellowship with farkness in the first place. We don't Hop on a song with a person whose life ain't about it and then expect the brother and sisters yo want to eat that. Even God would call that blind lambs and maimed goats, sacrifices that are strangled and dead. Such things are an abomination to God. Every praise and every song and every worship is to God. Trying to separate worship from our life should be like trying to take the white off rice. Don't make no sense.

Social media has been an extreme detriment in giving people a platform when they are in the phase of high zeal with minimum knowledge. The Bible even tells us that when Paul got converted he spent YEARS away from a bunch of other believers so he could pray and study and then took time to preach and connect to the Apostles

As a Christian who comes from a Congo ( a French speaking country) i find this subject so interesting because this is only concerning American Gospel music. One things I’ve notice is Afrobeat Gospel music and French Gospel music have different boundaries is still Holy and glorifying God but just culturally different.

I haven't finished watching the video, but regarding Cross Movement, Phanatic did a fairly extensive interview on the Myth Vision channel (the host himself is an ex-Christian) about why he de-converted. It seems that the process for him really gained traction after the Cross Movement ran its course and he went into education.

I think a lot of people fail to understand the heart and mind of any creative/artistic person. A lot of creative people like to use metaphors and analogies to describe one thing. So a person could be rapping we’re singing about a lion for example and be talking about Jesus. Like somethings are not so black-and-white. There is creative ways to talk about Jesus without overtly saying the name Jesus. I honestly think the creative process in the hard work that goes into itIt’s a form of worship. It takes a lot of work sometimes to be creative. I think God honors our commitment to find creative ways to honor him

I'm willing to cover secular music if it means connecting with non-believers. I've learned it's completely possible without compromising my Christian character or beliefs. This will most likely happen in the beginning of a set, for engagement. I've found that two things often happen: Non-believers stick around to hear what I have to say later, whether a personal struggle they can relate to or a gospel presentation, and Christians leave right away and DM me their disappointment while I'm literally up there doing what they think I should've done..I like what Lecrae said in an interview about him not being called to reach people in the garden if he grew up in the jungle. Perhaps the song is an engagement attempt in the radio space, to draw them in so he can drop his deeper content..the whole bait and switch ya naw mean? Whenever someone accues me of looking like the world, I always share about how God did the same thing. How much more like the world can you look than to wrap yourself in human flesh..something we would recognize.

I've heard this convo for years now. I know the way most want to view it as Christians who are making music, not "Christian music." I get all that. I get that you don't have to say Jesus in every song. But, I can say this in regards to all that...PLEASE keep in mind though, EVERY DAY people are dying and going to hell by the masses. So, if you've been given this gift in bringing the precious, powerful, soul saving Gospel, then you don't have time to talk about the weather. The time is NOW. If you've been given this opportunity then the time is NOW to take it. If Satan don't take a day off in bringing his A game 24/7 full on converting souls to him, then how can we not be for real the flip side? That's one thing I see too often, is the concern to not be preachy. The thing is, you don't have to be preachy, but you can hit it hard with much more of all the life topics that are destroying people's lives. We're running out of time. The time is NOW more than EVER. I know you dudes know this. Praying for you bros.

If God is truly in this Christian rap space He is going to require a higher standard of content out of this space. The fact that you all are having this conversation is an indication of shift that God is requiring. Even to the point where reacting to offense has to go. Because if we are truly His disciples then we should already know that offense will come.
And Ruslan I 100% agree with you regarding salvation vs discipleship. There has to be an elevation from just being okay with being saved. We have to have a Kingdom mindset that governs our entire lives. Thank you for the challenge.

True Hip-Hop was created with the intention to change lives in the community of its listeners. Lecrae’s music did just that. His music changed and saved my life. Christianity is also meant to change lives but yet has damaged so many. If changing lives for the better is the Goal then talking about what does the opposite is necessary.
